NEWS

At the end of last season when we reviewed, one of the key elements we identified was our pre-season training and match play, and we determined that a robust schedule of games against our opponents was really important.

Kimberlee Green Rejuvenated and raring to go At the conclusion of the World Cup, Kimberlee announced her retirement from international netball. It wasn’t a decision that was easily made. “When I was thinking about retiring, I went back and forth,” Kimberlee says. “But it was a perfect time to go at that level – it was such a big year. The NWC2015 ticked off a box for me and I was fortunate to be to retire on my terms. And knowing I was retiring, I made sure I enjoyed every aspect of the World Cup.”

auntie or sister who is away all the time. It was really important to me to get that time in.” The years of elite, international netball are tough – on the mind and on the body and, for Kimberlee, taking some time to let her body recover from the rigours of training and playing was her first priority. “After the holiday, I really pulled back and gave myself time to let my body completely recover. My body was in quite a bad state at the end of the season and I needed to give my head some time to breathe also. You spend so long in that fast lane – with your head in that space and you can forget what you’ve achieved – that you are Vice Captain of the Aussie Diamonds. I took time to sit back and reflect and think about

“I feel rejuvenated. It’s super important to have that balance. Retiring from international competition doesn’t change what I do with the Swifts.” Retiring from international competition has given Kimberlee some time to relax and spend time with friends and family – something that has been difficult to do with the commitment required to play elite netball on the international stage. One of the first things she did was take a tropical holiday. “I went to Bali with my family – I never had that opportunity when I was playing internationals. For the first time in years I could go on a family holiday. I’m so happy they were willing to come with me. I wanted to spend some quality time with them and thank my family for being so supportive. It’s not easy having a daughter,

what I can do moving forward. I’m going to have all this time off now and I need to be busy.” Kimberlee has started a new venture called The Centred Life. It draws on her knowledge of counselling and her years of experience as an elite athlete to teach people how to find that important – and often elusive – balance between life and their other commitments. “A lot of people don’t know we all have these strong emotions. I have had those moments where I feel I’m not good enough, and the good thing about it is you learn how to pull yourself out of that. I am fortunate to be able to sit back

and reflect on how I do that. I feel I am a pretty strong person on the outside – I have a tough exterior but on the inside I feel like a lot of people and it’s been really cool to tap into that sort of thing as well.” While teaching others about work–life balance is a passion for Kimberlee, it’s been just as important for her in 2016 to practice what she preaches. “I feel rejuvenated. It’s super important to have that balance. Retiring from international competition doesn’t change what I do with the Swifts. But when I come home I have a sense of peace. Previously, there were also Aussie commitments and you don’t take being a leader in the Aussie team lightly. I would always be making sure that everything is all in check. Now I can go home, relax and that’s going to be the big difference for me.” Looking at the NSW Swifts for 2016, Kimberlee has great hopes for the team. “This year, we honestly have 12 ridiculously amazing athletes in this them. The fans are going to see a few fresh faces and love everything they see out there on the court.”

5 | NSW SWIFTS INSIDER

NSW Swifts Captain Kimberlee Green had an amazing 2015 – she lead the Swifts to a grand final place in the ANZ Championship and was a the Vice Captain of the Australian Diamonds as they charged into history as World Champions in the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.

NEWS DID YOU KNOW?

Have you ever wondered why and when the NSW Swifts will wear their official “Clash dress” – their alternative strip when playing in matches? A clash dress is worn when two ANZ Championship team’s dresses resemble each other too closely to provide umpires, spectators and broadcast audiences enough colour difference to enjoy the match. The NSW Swift will wear their clash dresses for these 2016 matches: • AWAY Game – Mainland Tactix v NSW Swifts, Christchurch New Zealand, Sunday 22 May • AWAY Game – Adelaide Thunderbirds v NSW Swifts, Adelaide South Australia, Saturday 18 June Interestingly both the NSW Swifts and Mainland Tactic need to wear their Clash dresses when playing each other home or away. This year the one match between the two sides will take place in New Zealand, Christchurch on Sunday 22 May. With that fun fact, you can wear your grey Swifts hoodie when watching the match – although we really don’t mind if you are cheering from your couch (or in the stands at the AWAY games) in your Swifts red gear!

CAPTAINS CALLED

The NSW Swifts will be led this year by long-time and one-Club stalwart Captain Kimberlee Green and new Club recruit and highly respected Silver Ferns midcourter Laura Langman as Vice-Captain. Both aged 29, Green will captain the NSW Swifts for a fifth* consecutive season, while Langman becomes the first import player in NSW Swifts’ history be hold such a leadership position. As vice-captains for the respective countries at the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015, Green and Langman’s partnership will draw upon the experience gained from a combined^ 229 ANZ Championship appearances plus 205 International Caps when leading the NSW Swifts in 2016. The NSW Swifts playing group selected the pair in February this year and will be well supported by an experienced and passionate team of athletes and team officials.

WEAR YOUR RAINBOW LACES LIKE THE SWIFTS

Did you arrive when the doors opened today and snap up a pair of Rainbow Laces thanks to our friends at SKINS? They are the driving force behind the Homophobia. Knot Me? campaign and the NSW Swifts are on board too! If you were one of the 500 guests through the door and picked up your laces…well done.

NEW RULES COME INTO PLAY

6 | NSW SWIFTS INSIDER

New netball rules came into effect on 1 January 2016 and will be implemented across the sport and throughout the ANZ Championship Games this year. The new rules were released by the International Netball Federation to meet the changing needs of the game. This includes making interpretation of the rules consistent across regions and making the game more attractive for spectators. The areas of change include: • How umpires officiate play – they will no longer blow their whistle when goals are scored or if it is clear that a ball is out of court. • When play is stopped for injury or illness, this will be for 30 seconds and the player will be required to leave the court. • The Centre is only required to have one foot wholly in the circle when taking the centre pass. • Goal keepers and goal defence can no longer deflect a shot when the ball is on the way down to the ring – this includes touching the ball through the net. • When a player is taking a penalty pass, they have the choice to wait or not for the infringer to stand out of play. The player who is sanctioned must still stand out of play. • Penalties are now called sanctions. Sanctions include Free Pass or Penalty Pass. Thrown in and Toss Up are actions rather than sanctions. Netball Australia has released a series of instructional videos to explain the new rules and interpretations. These are available on the Netball Australia website.

NEWS CONGRATULATIONS!

There’s been a baby boom lately with some of our favourite former Swifts welcoming little bundles of ‘netball family’ joy into the world. A note of congratulations to NSW Swifts 2008 captain Catherine Cox and partner Luke on the birth of their daughter Harper Anne on 22 February 2016. Cath was always an early bird, early to training, appearances, team events and matches and, like mother, like daughter, Harper Anne was three weeks early herself! It’s a future NSW Swifts team in the making (just kidding…no pressure!) as former NSW Swifts defender Rebecca Bulley and her husband Randall welcomed baby Indie Hazel in March. Former NSW Swift Vice-Caption Selina Hornibrook (nee Gilsenan) had her fourth baby boy Harrison earlier in the year, as did former NSW Swifts Apprentice Coach and former Sydney Swift Briony Akle, who also welcomed her fourth baby boy in November 2015. We are thrilled for you all.

AUSSIES’ CLEAN SWEEP IN ENGLAND

While we were away, the Australian Diamonds travelled to Liverpool and London in January to take on England in a three-test tour. Current and former NSW Swifts were well represented with Sharni Layton, Caitlin Thwaites and Paige Hadley. Stephanie Wood was selected as a training partner. The Diamonds finished with a 3-0 clean sweep against the home team with all 12 players getting court time. The team was the most inexperienced for many years but they kept the pressure on to bring home the win. Match 1 Australian Diamonds (58) defeated England (52) Match 2 Australian Diamonds (60) defeated England (44) Match 3 Australian Diamonds (55) defeated England (41)

FAMILY FUN DAY AND SEASON LAUNCH The NSW Swifts welcomed over 1,200 Members and fans to Netball Central on Saturday, 20 February to officially launch the Club’s season and Family Fun Day! One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Official Dress Presentation, when the 2016 NSW Swifts roster were presented with their official playing dresses for the 2016 ANZ Championship, from some lucky NSW Swifts Members. It was non-stop action for the Swifts supporters; from selfies with the Swifts players, Sporty Swift, Oscar Bear from The Kids’ Cancer Project and creatures from the Taronga Zoomobile – made possible thanks to the Club’s Principal Partner QBE, to clowning around on a giant inflatable slide, enjoying Behind The Scenes tours, getting their faces painted in Swifts colours, testing their pace at the QBE Speed Zone, getting dolled up at the Styling Station, trying out the latest training equipment with SKLZ, snapping a pic at the QBE Photo Booth, getting a portrait drawn up by our cartoonist, checking out the latest netball shoes with The Athlete’s Foot, grabbing the 2016 Swifts merchandise range from Coast2Coast, picking up tips on the best snacks for kids playing sport with Finish With The Right Stuff, and playing giant jenga with the 2DayFM Hit Squad… it was a packed afternoon for all!

BEHIND THE SCENES

The Sargeant-McKinnis Cup Border rivalry is alive and well Tonight’s match between the NSW Swifts and the Melbourne Vixens kicks off the 2016 ANZ Championship for the Swifts but it is also the first of two matches between traditional rivals NSW and Victoria in the competition for a different trophy – the Sargeant–McKinnis Cup. The cup is named after netball legends Anne Sargeant and Simone McKinnis OAM. Anne Sargeant is a stalwart of NSW and Australian netball – she represented Australia between 1978 and 1988. For six of these, she was Captain. During her time with the Australian team Anne played in three World Championships in 1979, 1983 and 1987. Simone McKinnis garnered 63 caps for Australia, including one Netball World Championship and two Commonwealth Games. She has also been Head Coach of the Melbourne Vixens since 2012.

home the silverware from 2004 to 2006 and Victoria winning in 2007. Decided by the aggregate winner of the two NSW Swifts–Melbourne Vixens regular matches during the ANZ Championship, the trophy has been a feature of the ANZ Championship since its inception in 2008. The Swifts have dominated the rivalry for the Cup, taking home the cup in six out of the previous eight years. The players will be stepping onto the court tonight in a bid not just to win their first game of the regular ANZ season but to get ahead for the Sargeant– McKinnis Cup.

At just 18 years old, the youngest 2016 recruit is looking forward to running onto the court with some of her netball idols this year. “It’s just surreal,” Lauren says, “I look to my left and there’s Kim Green and to my right is my hero, Sharni Layton. I’m still in shock sometimes about how lucky I am to be here.” A Wyong native, Lauren began her netball career with the Bateau Bay Dolphins at just five years old. She started to play representative netball with the Wyong Association when she was 12, where she played until she was 14. From there, Lauren’s netball career was on the fast-track. She

training and the gym, with support of her parents, who have been there every step of the way. Her dad often picks her up in the evening after a hard day of training because she’s too tired to drive herself home. “My parents gave me the best possible start to my netball career”, Lauren remembers. “They have always had my back through the tough times and I can’t see myself being here without them. Dad is a massive netball fan and Mum is fantastic.” Lauren’s mum started her in netball – it was a sport she loved and wanted her daughter to experience playing for herself. “Mum loved netball and wanted me to play a team sport. It was a good choice – I love it!”

“I told my family at the age of fifteen that I wanted to join the NSW Swifts when I was nineteen or twenty. For it to happen straight after school is just amazing.”

For Lauren, the highlight of last year came when she was picked for the playing roster of the NSW Swifts and she was given the opportunity to travel with the Swifts for two of their away games. “I travelled with the team to Melbourne and Perth as a replacement player in 2015 and from there I was offered a place with the Swifts at the end of last year,” Lauren says. “That was a dream come true. I told my family at the age of fifteen that I wanted to join the NSW Swifts when I was nineteen or twenty. For it to happen straight after school is just amazing.” Achieving her dream means a lot of hard work – and a lot of time on the road. She travels one-anda-half to two hours from her home in Wyong for

Lauren’s father is her ultimate fan – he even changes goal ends when the teams change to ensure he has the best view of her game. Now, as Lauren enters Round One as a fully fledged member of the NSW Swifts, she is keen to revel in the experience and atmosphere. “I’m most looking forward to just being amongst it, being part of the atmosphere, both on the bench and on the court. I’m also looking forward to the challenge of playing such high-calibre, highintensity netball. I’m super excited.”

joined the Central Coast Academy of Sport at 15 and was later picked for the NSW 17/U team and she played with the team for two consecutive years. In 2014 she represented NSW in the Australian Netball League for the NSW Blues and in 2015 for the NSW Waratahs.
