Just a quick shout out to the world’s best fans too – thanks for the noise, the back-up, the passion at the first home game last Sunday…

Laura Langman Making history as a Silver Fern & a Swift Her achievements and talent continued to be recognised – in 2015 she was awarded the Dame Lois Muir Supreme Award (a Netball New Zealand award that recognises the best netballer across the ANZ Championship and the Silver Ferns campaigns), the New Zealand ANZ Championship Player of the Year and the Silver Ferns Player of the Year!

For Laura, the opportunity to join the NSW Swifts was just what she was looking for. “I’m loving it [playing with the Swifts]; it’s a massive challenge. I made the move for personal growth and to play with the best here at the Swifts.” It’s a new experience for Laura playing for an Australian team and she is learning and adapting to her new club and teammates. “There’s lots of similarities between the Australian and New Zealand playing styles,” Laura explains. “But the difference for me is the skill set that you are required to have in order to be able to execute the Swifts style of play. For me it has really highlighted my need

“When Laura signed with the NSW Swifts as their import in 2016, Laura becomes the first active Silver Fern to play for an Australian franchise in the ANZ Championship.” When Laura signed with the NSW Swifts as their import in 2016, Laura became the first active Silver Fern to play for an Australian Club in the ANZ Championship. So what prompted her move from her home country to come and play in the red and blue? “I’m not a big netball watcher but I watched the finals [between the NSW Swifts and the Queensland Firebirds] and it was one of the best games of netball I have ever seen,” Laura says. “The speed and intensity was next level and I wanted to be part of that environment for that and the opportunities that come from that.”

to be able to develop my one-on-one defence and having the ability to execute this style for 60 minutes. That’s a work in progress for me.” Playing alongside some of Australia’s most talented players – including Captain Kimberlee Green and defender Sharni Layton is a great experience for Laura. “[The NSW Swifts] have legends Sharni and Kim who operate on another level and I try and absorb that and try to improve my game.” It’s been quite a change for Laura but she’s enjoying every moment.

“I moved here on the fifth of February and I’m loving all the activities on offer, the weather and hanging out with the ‘Wolf Pack’ (at home in the Inner West)– it’s a laugh a minute.” The ‘Wolf Pack’ is the name she and her flatmates Stephanie Wood and Maddy Turner have given themselves. Looking to the rest of the season, Laura has great hopes for the performance of the Swifts. “I think we have a well balanced team,” Laura explains. “There is lots of youth coming through and the energy they have is really contagious. Even though you have may have been around for many ANZ games, the energy the younger players bring to the mix is really refreshing.” “For Round Two, I think we need to acknowledge that we are playing our first kiwi side. We’ve learnt from the pre-season and we need to take the time to adjust to the New Zealand style of play, including playing off the body and adjusting the lines and angels we need to play.” So what has been Laura’s highlight so far this season? “I think the way we came out at preseason and how we performed. For me personally it was a special moment to get a starting position for the Swifts in the first match. That game was an Aussie team playing an Aussie team and the game was a very high standard. So it was definitely a highlight to survive preseason and be given the nod to give it a crack first game up.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you catch that nail-biting game last Friday between Southern Steel and Northern Mystics 58 – 57 (respectively), in Auckland for Round 1. In case you were wondering, there can be drawn matches in the 2016 ANZ Championship, as per season 2015. The NSW Swifts had three drawn games in 2015 and when this occurs, both teams receive one point each. Fun fact – the NSW Swifts three draws in the one season is the most of any team in one competition year. (Round 3 Swifts v Firebirds 47-47, Round 4, Swifts v Fever 59 – 59, Round 9 Pulse v Swifts 47-47)

CHALLENGE TROPHY

The Challenge Trophy was introduced in Round One of the 2015 season by the ANZ Championship. The Challenge Trophy is contested every time the current Trophy holding team plays a home game. By way of a ballot the West Coast Fever had the opportunity to start the Challenge Trophy journey hosting the first of the official matches when they played at home in Round 2, on 8 March against Northern Mystics 67-51. West Coast Fever successfully defended the trophy five times (in five home games of 2015) Mystics 67 – 51, Steel 67 – 60, Thunderbirds 55 – 50, Vixens 53 – 47, Magic 54 – 49 before it was won by the Queensland Firebirds 56 - 48, in Round 10. Since this time it has rested in Queensland with the Firebirds through until the end of the regular season. (The Challenge Trophy is not contested during the Finals Series).

To date, only two teams have held, won or retained the Trophy…West Coast Fever and Queensland Firebirds.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Swifts trio bring home the silverware NSW Swifts trio Kaitlyn Bryce, Lauren Moore and Maddy Turner kicked off their 2016 netball season strongly with an outstanding showing at the 21/U National Championships held in Tasmania in March, winning the Championship title. Usually donning the Swift red dress and training gear, the trio wore their NSW blues with pride as they stormed home with the silverware, bringing the title back to NSW after a four year hiatus. The NSW 21/U teammates flew to Launceston and faced tough competition from rival states. However the NSW team emerged victorious, winning seven of their eight campaign games across six days of competition.

Bryce led on the court as Captain - playing midcourt for the 21/U State Team, whilst NSW Swifts team mates Moore and Turner combined as part of the defensive unit for NSW. For Maddy Turner, the week was something to remember. “I don’t think you can top winning. It was definitely the highlight of the week – and it was perfect. It was my fourth time [winning the Championship] in a row and that was pretty special, but to do it alongside my Swifts teammates was even better,” she said. The young defender, who now has five National Championship Titles, to her name was also awarded with the overall Most Valuable Player

(MVP) of the Championship for the second time (2016 and 2015). But she insists the whole experience it was a team effort. “I did not expect to win MVP at all, as any one of our players could have won it. It really was … a great week. But everyone deserved it and I think that winning the competition overall with the NSW girls just topped it off,” Maddy said.

Did you know?

Here’s to the start of something special. More than proud to sponsor Netball in Australia.

Amy Sommerville Hard work pays off This year, Amy Sommerville joins her NSW Swifts teammates for the first time as a part regular 12 following her time as a replacement player last year. For Amy, it’s been a year of dedication and commitment to fulfil her dream of playing with the Swifts and on Suday 3 April her dream came true whe she took the court as GS against the Melbourne Vixens. Her training started early to ensure she was in the best shape possible. “Last year I probably started around September with five days a week training with one of my friends who is a personal trainer. I worked on my fitness and strength and it was really good to have one-on-one session,” Amy explained.

As a shooter, Amy also did a lot of shooting training in between her fitness, strength and speed work. “I was training shooting six days a week and I varied that. I would practice shooting when I was fatigued sessions and I would try to mimic a game situation . “For my shooting sessions, I would warm up with some shots, the I would sprint down the court shoot 10 shoots. If I missed two in a row, I would do a suicide run on the court. I start at the baseline, run to the first transverse line, back to the baseline, then to the second and the third and then I would shoot again.” All that hard work paid off and Amy with her debut

“It’s crazy to think that I am part of the team. I have had this amazing journey to get my dream to play with the Swifts.” last Sunday, received her official NSW Player Number: 44. “It’s crazy to think that I am part of the team. I have had this amazing journey to get my dream to play with the Swifts. This is my dream and it’s so surreal. “I take every opportunity I get to keep learning and take everything in like a sponge.”

“Then in October and November, I started to go to six days a week. I added more training to work myself up to get myself to where a Swifts training load would look like. I did lots of conditioning sessions – running, swimming and bike sessions. I also did some speed sessions and worked on my running technique. I also did a bit of weights three weights a week, working on my general strength. In total I probably did one to two hours each day.”
