Caitlin tells us all about her passions off the court – helping kids reach their potential.
Welcome NSW Swifts members and guests to Round 3 of the 2016 Championship. What a ride it has been so far! It’s been really great that in the first two rounds, each of the 12 NSW Swifts players have had the opportunity to take the court. Last week’s match against the WBOP Magic broke a number of Swifts records and while it’s nice to enjoy the results of a game well-played, it’s important to keep our eye on the upcoming games and the opponents ahead that we will face. This week we will be looking to consolidate our performances so far and building on our successes as the season progresses. As we take the court for our third home game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds we know that they have a strong away record against us – which is something we will be sure to not underestimate.
Round up of all the latest ANZ Championship and NSW Swifts news.
The rivalry between the Swifts and Thunderbirds go back many years, and beyond my time, and even this league – so we look forward to putting our best forward in what should be another tough 60 minutes.

Caitlin Thwaites A helping hand “I’ve been working in the NNSW Community Engagement department for a couple of years now, so that’s been really good. When I left school I went on to do a psychology degree at university. I’ve still got a few units of that left but I plan to finish and with that degree I want to get into helping young kids develop coping skills for the things that life throws at them.”
“I’m trying to help them with their life skills. When I started, I wasn’t aware of the kind of issues they were dealing with but as I got to know them a little bit better, we were able to tailor the program. At first, the program dealt with the general Aussie kid issues, bullying and body image, but for these kids, identity is a big issue. They are trying to figure out where they fit into the community, where their values align with a different culture.” It’s a challenging job to take on, but Caitlin knows that these are issues that affect children the world over – no matter where they were born.
“I think for me, this is a bit of wellness journey. I’ve learnt coping skills and various thing like that, which I’ve had to discover on my own journey what works for me.” Caitlin herself has dealt with anxiety and depression over the years and she really wants to help young people who are faced with mental health or general wellbeing issues.
“We are still looking at body image and bullying but we looking at it from a different perspective. They have similar issues but from a different viewpoint.”
Off the court, Caitlin spends a lot of time in classrooms talking to children from all backgrounds.
At the end of the day, Caitlin wants to ensure that the children she works with are given the tools to deal with whatever life throws at them and the work is important to her.
“I’m running classroom sessions with kids in a couple of high schools in Sydney. The kids have generally just arrived in Australia in the last couple of months, and there are a lot migrants from Iraq and Syria.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding for me to know how grateful these kids are to be here to have a fresh start. I’ve had a couple of teary moments – as an exercise I asked them to tell me their
favourite place. One just said Australia. I asked where in Australia. She said ‘just Australia because the air is clean and I can drink the water’. It’s really powerful to hear.” Looking forward to life after the Swifts, Caitlin has ambitions to work in a field that inspires here. “I want to have a job that can help inspire, where that may be in terms of a mental health or organising youth workshops. That’s the space I really enjoy. I feel I’m getting really great experience [with Netball NSW].” For Caitlin, it’s a holistic approach to life that gives her the balance she’s looking for. “I think for me, this is a bit of wellness journey. I’ve learnt coping skills and various thing like that, which I’ve had to discover on my own journey what works for me. I’ve had some real moments of clarity, and I wish I had of known this five years ago but I think because I have struggled a bit, kids can potentially relate to me as opposed to seeing a netballer who just plays with the Swifts and the Diamonds.” “One of the barriers around the depression is that for a long time people didn’t talk about it. I want to be part of removing stigma around it. Maybe I can be that little gem of hope for someone else going through this.”

NEWS SWIFT GOALS IN SIXTY – MAKING HISTORY
The NSW Swifts broke two of their own records in last week’s game against the WBOP Magic. The team posted their highest goal tally in 60 minutes with 78 goals. They smashed their previous 70-goal record which they achieved against the West Coast Fever in Round 6, 2011. The Swifts also posted their biggest winning margin against WBOP Magic, defeating the Kiwis 78 – 50. The previous record was the 17-goal win in Round 12 in 2010, 60-43. The win against the visitors makes it three consecutive wins for the NSW Swifts. The highest recorded score by a team in the ANZ Championship is held by Southern Steel when they scored 80 goals against the Mainland Tactix last season. We were only two goals off that record too! Wowzers.

ACADEMY GAMES
The 2016 ClubsNSW Academy Games was hosted by the Central Coast Academy of Sport from 8 - 10 April on the Central Coast and participants were treated to a few player and coach appearances from the NSW Swifts team. NSW Swifts players Paige Hadley and Laura Langman attended the event, along with NSW Swifts coach Rob Wright providing coach mentoring opportunities. Hadley and Langman’s NSW Swifts teammate Lauren Moore is an 18 year old Central Coast netballer herself, who only three seasons ago was competing in the Academy Games, and only days ago made her NSW Swifts debut in Round 1 of the 2016 ANZ Championship. Lauren fondly remembers the Academy games experience and believes that the Academy pathway through to the State teams and now the NSW Swifts was critical to her success.
6 | NSW SWIFTS INSIDER
“Some of my best mates and I had the chance to play Academy Games together after coming up through the reps together. The Academy Games really steps up the level of competition from representative and has definitely led to more opportunities for me…but also given me friendships that really matter which is important.” The NSW Regional Academy coaches participating in the Games had additional support from NSW Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright, who was on hand to offer advice and mentoring to coaches. Plus, regional umpires were given the chance to work with experiences umpires Chris Hall, Stewart Ting, Lauren Hill and Kate Thornborough all weekend offering support, coaching and development. The 2016 ClubsNSW Academy Games showcases the state’s best athletes in basketball, golf, hockey, netball, triathlon and surfing. The Netball Academies are a key part of the high performance pathway for regional players, coaches and umpires and are an opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and personal attributes.

Kaitlyn Bryce
From the South Coast to Centre Court Growing up in Shoalhaven on the NSW South Coast, Kaitlyn Bryce started playing netball to be just like her big sister, well…better than her big sister! “My reason for starting was because my older sister played at the local Association and local club team at Shoalhaven and I wanted to be better than her,” says Kaitlyn. “I did a lot of other sports growing up but it was when I started to play in the NSW PSSA [Primary Schools Sports Association) competitions at the age of twelve that I really started my connection with netball. The tournament was in Nowra and it was through that tournament that I came into contact with people from Sydney – the PSSA coach was from Sydney, and I became involved in Sydney netball.” From the age of 13 years, Kaitlyn started playing netball with Fairfield Netball Association for two years. The two years of travelling from Shoalhaven was dedication by Kaitlyn and her parents, but was only the start of the commitment and focus. “Travelling back and forth from Shoalhaven, it was a six-hour round trip. We would spend thirty-
all the home games and be part of the Swifts family environment! “I was an usher and helped people with directions. I also remember walking the Swifts mascot around as well – which is all about the Club, the people and the fans,” Kaitlyn says. In 2013, Kaitlyn had the opportunity to be a training partner for the NSW Swifts – and, she says, it all took off from there. “I spent six months in 2013 with the Australian Institute of Sport. And in 2014 and 2015, I played in the State League with St George and in the Australian Netball League with the NSW Waratahs.” Kaitlyn has gone from strength to strength, and she spent last year in the Netball Centre of Excellence program in Canberra. In July last year, Kaitlyn received “the call” from NSW Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright. From there, it’s been lots and lots of Swifts training before launching into the ANZ Championship. Kaitlyn is excited to have had an extensive pre-season but

even more pleased to be into the competition proper.
By the time she was 16 years old, Kaitlyn had moved to Sydney to play more netball and be part of the NSW high performance pathway.
“We are two rounds down, and it is nice to be in the main season. It’s nice to know that at the end of every week we are working towards a common goal – the game on the weekend. There is focus motivation and determination for whoever we are playing next. It’s a new challenge every week and for me, that is really exciting.”
“When I was sixteen I moved from Fairfield Netball Association across to Sutherland Shire, as they were closest Association geographically to the South Coast and it was with them that I started playing Division 2 State League in 2012 and 2013.” Kaitlyn credits her start with the school netball system for her ability to move up and into the NSW High Performance Pathway. “It was going through the school system, starting there – learning from the All-Schools Team at 15 and moving up into the NSW 17 & Under State and Australian teams. In 2012, all the while, starting Year 11 at school, Kaitlyn started volunteering at NSW Swifts games – which gave her the opportunity to watch
Kaitlyn Bryce received her NSW Swifts official player number last Saturday 9 April when she made her ANZ Championship and Club debut in the further quarter against the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.
