MADDY PROUD
Our midcourt dynamo shares a little bit about life growing up in Adelaide.
We were disappointed with our Fever game and looking forward to the challenge of getting one back against our West Coast rivals. After falling to the Fever by five goals in Round 5 we’re keen to turn around the result on our home court; and there’s no better place to do so than in front of a loud and proud Red Army.

THANK YOU ROUND
On the eve of National Volunteer Week, the NSW Swifts are celebrating the wonderful individuals who help make this sport so great: our Volunteers.
Round up of all the latest NSW Swifts news.
8-9
But this time we have our Swifts Family in our corner, and we will need all of you to stand up and cheer loudly. You help us over the line in those crucial moments. Let’s make sure Fever know that this time…they’re on our turf!
It will no doubt be a challenge. Like us, the Fever haven’t posted as many wins as they’d like but they’ve certainly taken the contest to some of the competition’s heavyweights. With players such as Nat Medhurst, Courtney Bruce and rising star Jessica Anstiss in their ranks, it’s no surprise the kind of netball Fever are capable of producing.

Maddy Proud Proud school of hard knocks While a fresh face to the Swifts outfit, Proud is no stranger to the elite environment. Signing her first full-time contract at the same time as entering her final year at high school, Proud has been a player in the making for a number of years, and in 2017 she’s shown just what she’s capable of.
day netballer need not just be fast on their feet, but must have their wits about them too. But Proud is also tough as nails – an attribute she displays week-in, week-out every time she takes the court for the Swifts. She credits her toughness and competitive drive having grown up with two brothers, and backyard sports were a staple of the family home. “Both my parents were very active when I was growing up and Dad loved to see us outdoors enjoying the fresh air,” Proud says.
“I think there’s been this illusion that netball isn’t as physical…but the attitude is changing” A versatile midcourter with a never-say-die attitude, Proud has been a staple of the Swifts’ starting line-up – linking effortlessly with her underage Australian teammate Paige Hadley, as well as covering defence with Captain Abbey McCulloch. She’s also proof that Netball is a tough sport. At the elite level it’s fast, intense, physical and amazingly skilful, and the modern
“He had me throwing a tennis ball before I could walk. I was definitely a bit of a tom-boy growing up with brothers, so I had a love of all sports from an early age. “I remember growing up and we used to play AFL in our backyard and we’d contest marks and I would be the only girl playing. One time I thought I’d injured my finger so badly I wouldn’t be able to play Nationals (National Netball Championships). It
turned out to be fine but I definitely learned some resilience.” Cut back to present day, Proud is glad she learned that harsh lesson early with netball growing in popularity, skill and physicality with the introduction of the new Australianonly competition. “I think there’s been this illusion that netball isn’t as physical or intense as other sports that we have in Australia, but the attitude is changing I think,” Proud says. “I took my brothers to a game once and they were gobsmacked with how intense netball is; the strength involved as the game and players evolve. It’s not the gentle sport people may have grown up playing or watching. “It is wonderful that we are now in a position to be able to work on things like strength and conditioning and become better athletes, and I think the sport is now a better product as a result of that.” One thing’s for certain, if everyone plays the game like Maddy Proud, netball will continue to be a force.

The NSW Swifts have welcomed a new-look side for the introduction of Suncorp Super Netball, and one of the stand-out performers amongst the new faces has been midcourt dynamo Maddy Proud.
NEWS SWIFT #51 The NSW Swifts welcomed Player #51 to the ranks at our Round 9 BLOCKBUSTER Double Header Event, Emily Keenan. And boy, did she make an impact in her elite debut! A long-time NSW representative, Round 9 was Emily’s elite netball debut; cementing a life-long dream for the Mum-of-one to play netball at the highest level…and she made sure no one would forget her debut in a hurray! Showing her trademark commitment for the ball, Emily flew over the sidelines and into the score bench just four minutes into her debut, after being called onto Centre for the start of the second half. If you haven’t seen the footage, check out the NSW Swifts Instagram page. Welcome to the Swifts Family Emily!

LAST TIME THEY MET The NSW Swifts took on the longest road trip of the season when they headed to HBF Stadium in Perth, WA to meet West Coast Fever in Round 5. Much like today, it was a Friday night game full of hype ready to open the Round. After Fever jumped out to an early lead, the Swifts rampaged in the second quarter to take a one-goal advantage into half-time. Nothing separated the two sides at the final break, but a late surge in the final 10 minutes of the match saw the hosts pull away to a 55-50 victory; the Fever’s first win of the season.

National Volunteer Week MONDAY 8 to SUNDAY 14 MAY
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK IS AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION OF OUR NATION’S VOLUNTEERS. This year National Volunteer Week will be celebrated from Monday 8 to Sunday 14 May, with thousands of events scheduled across Australia to recognise the incredible contribution that volunteers give to our community. Tonight the NSW Swifts are getting in early, because without dedicated volunteers our wonderful sport wouldn’t be as highly celebrated as it is. From the amazing NSW Swifts Volunteers who help at each and every home game by setting up our activations, putting Swifts Insider on seats, or generally being helpful…to the Mums and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunties, Uncles, Sisters and Brother. You’re all AWESOME for helping all the ways you do. By stepping in as Coach or Umpire, bringing the halftime oranges, for helping out in the canteen or BBQ, and cheering on the sidelines at all of our games. For driving us to and from training sessions and games – many times watching and cheering in the rain! – plus so much more.
So make sure you take the time to say THANK YOU this National Volunteer Week – a small gesture to show our great appreciation.
