GIANTS PUZZLE

WELCOME The business end of the season is quickly approaching with the Club hosting our final regular season home game at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre tonight against the QLD Firebirds. Hopefully we will see this venue again in the Finals Series, but for now we’re going to get Round 13 underway with exciting Friday night netty. Make no mistake, while they might be out of Finals contention, the Firebirds are a good side and pose a big challenge as we look to secure the Minor Premiership and a home Semi Final. Through Romelda Aiken and Gretel Tippett, they can score quickly and their Captain Gabi Simpson is a proven game changer – a player I have long admired. Throughout the season it has been the same routine – one week at a time, one game at a time – and that’s been no different this week at training. We’re confident that if we execute our game plan properly, we can claim another win in front of our GIANTS Members and Fans. But to help us, we need you all in full voice – so stand up and make lots of noise! You help us in those tight moments, and it’s sure to be a tight 60 minute contest today.

Julie Fitzgerald Head Coach

THEME LITTLE GIANTS ROUND Netball NSW CEO Carolyn Campbell has publically acknowledged that one of the reasons for bidding for a second elite team was to provide our NSW players with more pathway opportunities to represent their State at the elite level. And today we’re celebrating that with Little GIANTS Round.

GIANTS Netball prides itself for being a strong role model for young netballers across NSW to look up to, and we hope that our behaviour both on and off the court inspires the next generation of players. We’re here to win hearts and help motivate those young netballers who have a dream to play Super Netball. Today we’ll be sharing some of our athletes’ netball journey to the GIANTS, to show there are many different ways and challenges to realise your dream of becoming an elite player.

JERSEY GIRL AT HOME ON AUSSIE SOIL When you have a conversation with Serena Guthrie it’s not hard to find out why the GIANTS Netball midcourter decided to pursue her dream of becoming an elite athlete. The English international, a former Northern Mystics representative before moving across the Tasman for the 2017 season, has always had a competitive edge – something she says has always been a part of her makeup. “I grew up in Jersey, which is off the south English coast before France. It is a really small place but it is absolutely sports mad,” Guthrie says. “The big sports there are cricket, rugby union, football and netball, but there is also a lot of athletics and sports like badminton. “I played as many of those sports as I could growing up and also played quite a lot of hockey and turned my hand at athletics and table tennis too.” Guthrie was born on the English mainland, but it was in Jersey that she fell in love with the sport she finally settled on which has given her the opportunity to travel the world.

before and I think it’s all coming to fruition now when you see what’s going on out on court and all the added elements of the modern game; the skill needed and the fitness you must have just to be able to stay out there for 60 minutes. “That’s why I am such a fan of players like Nat Medhurst who have reinvented their playing style and been able to stay on top of their game for so long, even when the sport changes around them.” Super Netball is the best club netball competition in the world, but away from the on-court pressures it seems Aussie life has been a good fit for Guthrie so far.

“It was a pretty cool place to grow up in… [I had] a real active lifestyle which is similar to how things are down here”

“I was pretty active as a child but I didn’t actually discover netball until I moved to Jersey, which was when I was about eight years old and that’s where my love for it grew,” she said. Playing lots of different sports has held Guthrie in good stead, especially given the demands the modern game of netball has on its best players. “I think when you look at netball now we are no longer just netballers but we are athletes – now you have to run faster, jump higher and get stronger. “The game is played a lot differently compared to what it was

“Jersey is quite like Australia actually, just a lot, lot smaller. Everyone there is really crazy about sport and we love our beaches and getting outdoors and having barbeques. “It was a pretty cool place to grow up in. I remember running up sand dunes at the weekend and having a real active lifestyle which is similar to how things are down here too.”

Music, especially the house variety, is also a passion for Guthrie. Over three years ago she made a New Year’s Resolution to get some more interests outside of sport. It turns out she’s pretty good at it too, with the GIANT invited to DJ at some of Auckland’s best clubs during her time with the Mystics. So should the Sydney music scene keep an eye out? “Not just yet,” she says, laughing. “This year at the GIANTS has been pretty full on and I’ve been flat out with netball commitments, but maybe in the off-season.” For now she’s happy to remain the heartbeat of the GIANTS’ midcourt. COACH’S LAST WORDS At an imposing 196cm, the QLD Firebirds have some firepower up front in goal shooter Romelda Aiken who regularly shoots 40-plus goals per game singlehandedly. Not only can they score lots – and score quickly – through the Jamaican international, Romelda also leads the competition for offensive rebounds; meaning when she misses, she usually gets another attempt. While I have great belief in Sam Poolman, she gives away 7cm to her opponent so the hard work must be done well before the ball gets into the Firebirds’ attacking third. Therefore the midcourt must slow down the Firebirds’ transitional play to allow Sam the opportunity to set up defensively and have a good look at the ball coming in. That will give her eyes on any intercepts she could chance taking.
