WELCOME On behalf of everyone at the Club, thank you for joining us today and showing your support for GIANTS Netball as we open the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season. We have been overwhelmed by the incredible support shown by our Foundation Members and Fans, and are thrilled to have you here today on this historic occasion for the Club; our first home game. Today is my favourite time of the week: Game Day. There’s nothing quite like the nervous excitement that builds up from the moment you wake up in the morning. All the weeks of preparation – the hours spent on court or in the gym – all comes into play today, and the team is proud to step out on court in front of you all. Not only is today our first home game, it also marks a new rivalry with the NSW Swifts the Battle of the Waratah - where the two Clubs will contest the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy. Carole is a legend of NSW netball and the GIANTS are very proud to be playing in her honour today; read more about the infamous ‘Sykesy’ on page 13. I’m expecting a passionate and entertaining game against the Swifts, so we will need all our Members and Fans in full voice to help us over the line. Cheer loud, and cheer proud.

THEME Foundation: The basis or groundwork of anything. For everything there is always a foundation and today, Saturday 18 February, is the beginning of GIANTS Netball. After Netball NSW announced its new elite Club in September 2016, Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald and her inaugural playing group of 15 athletes have spent months preparing for this day. Now, it begins again. Fourteen weeks of regular round robin competition, before a threeweek Final Series. And GIANTS Netball is aiming to be there until the final whistle, with our Foundation Members and Fans alongside. The journey is just beginning. We Are GIANTS Netball.

KIMBERLEE GREEN EMBRACING A GIANT NEW CHAPTER It’s a new club, new fan-base and whole load of expectation that will be on show at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre today, but GIANTS Netball will have a cool head leading the players out on court as a new era of Australian netball begins. Given she’s a World Cup and Premiership winner, you wouldn’t think there’s much left in the game for GIANTS Captain Kimberlee Green to achieve, but when you’re a champion it’s very hard to shake that competitive edge – and this is Suncorp Super Netball, after all. While Green will always treasure over a decade of wonderful memories with today’s opponents, sometimes a change is a good as a holiday and the chance to do something completely new on her own backdoor was just too good an opportunity to turn down. “The chance to join GIANTS Netball came along at the perfect time in my career,” she says. “I know exactly what I’m going to get from Jules [Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald]. I started out my career with her and I know how honest she can be, but in such a nurturing way, and I think that’s exactly what I need in my game right now.
“There is nothing better than playing at home in front of your own crowd: that is something that I have always held very dearly to my heart. “We have done such a good job during pre-season and the entire team has worked so hard, it’s now time to put all of that into action. “I’ve never been a part of a new club before and it’s going to be really surreal for me out there and knowing I’m going to be part of something that builds our foundations for the future of it, so it’s a very special moment for players and fans alike.” Registering a win against the NSW Swifts is obviously the main collective target of today’s Round 1 encounter, but Green knows that win, lose or draw, the manner in which the players go about their work is of vital importance too.
““There is nothing better than playing at home in front of your own crowd: that is something that I have always held very dearly to my heart”
“All of the players have been embracing how cool Jules is as a coach and I think the new club has definitely sparked me up a little bit more. Even pre-season has been a complete change to what I’m normally used to and I’ve been able to do all of it which is great.” The first competitive game of a new club, in a new league and in front of new fans could be hard for many to get their heads around, but Green is looking forward to the challenge and knows her team mates will embrace the occasion, rather than be overawed by it.
“A successful game and a win is what everyone wants but individually we will all be looking for improvement as well. I know that the GIANTS are really looking forward to executing things that we have been working on in training out on court.”
“The fact that I was part of the Swifts for a long time means they know my game inside out but I have been working really hard over pre-season to change what I’ve done before, just so teams don’t recognise what I’m trying to do. “It’s been a challenge for me, but also really great in terms of embracing this new chapter of my career. I’m really looking forward to the contest, and season, ahead.” Today the journey starts proper – let the games begin.
“We are really looking forward to getting to see all our new Members and Fans when we walk out on court,” she says. GIANTSMAGAZINE

GIANT Wow – what a fun start to the year, and I haven’t even had my first birthday yet! Since Mum joined GIANTS Netball, it’s been a sea of Orange. I’ve met my new Aunties who I get to see every week at training, and I even got to go for a ride in the sky. I got to visit the Sunshine Coast, QLD and Perth, WA on the big airplane – and I even got my own bed! – while my Mum was playing netball with my GIANTS Aunties. Me and Mum also got our photo taken for the newspaper - she was pretending I was a netball, how silly. I can’t wait for my next adventures – stay tuned throughout the season, and follow GIANTS Netball on social media for updates on where I’ll be next! Indie Bulley

GIANTS NEWS KRISTIANA PROGRESSING WELL
SAY ALOHA TO THE ‘BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE’
We know GIANTS Netball Members and Fans will be keen to hear how Kristiana Manu’a is progressing in her rehabilitation. Well, we are happy to report that she is doing GREAT!
Thanks to our Major Partners Hawaiian Airlines, lucky GIANTS Netball Members and Fans have the opportunity to win the Best Seats in the House at our home games in 2017!
After undergoing surgery in late December, Kristiana will soon be out of her moon boot and has been working diligently with our Physio Craig to ensure she’s on the right path.
Look out for the seats courtside where four lucky Foundation Members have been randomly selected to be upgraded for today’s game. And best yet – it could be you!
Along with her rehab, Kristiana has also been out and about in the community, meeting with the NSW 17/U Team and attending a recent Telstra App launch.
Upgrade opportunities will be available at all GIANTS Netball home games in NSW…who knows, maybe it will be YOU sitting in plush courtside seats at the Round 2 Double Header at Qudos Bank Arena?
We will continue to bring you updates on Kristiana’s progress throughout the season. Meanwhile, make sure you say hello when you see her at today’s game!
Thanks again to our proud partner Hawaiian Airlines for making this possible.
DIAMONDS WRAP QUAD SERIES CLEAN SWEEP AUSSIE 21S WITH EYES ON THE PRIZE Our own Toni Anderson, Jamie-Lee Price and Assistant Coach Tania Obst returned from Fiji with the Australian 21/U Team recently, where the team remained undefeated against New Zealand, Samoa and the hosts in a friendly tournament.
The Australian Diamonds returned home from the recent 2017 Netball Quad Series undefeated, claiming three wins over New Zealand, South Africa and England. Our own Susan Pettitt made a triumphant return to the Green & Gold, finishing the series with 54 goals at 87% accuracy in which she played nine quarters at both goal attack and goal shooter.
The series was used by Australia Head Coach Tania as important practice ahead of the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana later this year. Tania is tasked with selecting just 12 players to represent the Green & Gold at the international tournament, and will be using both the Suncorp Super Netball and Australian Netball League to watch athletes closely before making final decisions on her squad. While Toni has made her way through the Australian player pathway over the years – previously being selected in the Australian 17/U and 19/U squads – it was Jamie-Lee’s first foray in Australian colours after moving from her New Zealand base to be with GIANTS Netball in 2017. Stay tuned to our digital channels for any updates on the Australian 21/U NWYC Team as they happen.

CAROLE SYKES TROPHY Today, State Pride is on the line. GIANTS Netball and the NSW Swifts will not only be battling for competition points, but will be going headto-head in the Battle of the Waratah: the inaugural year of the Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy. A legend of NSW netball, Carole Sykes believed in the Waratah. She displayed great pride in the New South Wales dress, and the role she played in developing some of this State’s finest netball athletes.
by representatives of the Sykes family in honour of Carole and her incredible contribution to the sport. With over 40 years of service to the Waratah, the proud symbol of NSW representation in netball, Carole Sykes embodies the spirit of the elite player and coach in NSW and this trophy symbolises her passion and spirit for the battle on the court.
A former NSW Captain and representative, Carole turned her hand to coaching after retiring – helping steer NSW to three National Netball Championships and three ESSO Mobil League titles. She was also a former Australian player and coach, and is a member of the Netball NSW Hall of Fame. The Carole Sykes Memorial Trophy will be contested by both NSW Suncorp Super Netball teams – the GIANTS and Swifts – with the winner being determined based on the result of each match the teams contest. COACH’S LAST WORDS We’re anticipating an intense contest against the Swifts today, as both teams look to get their seasons off to a winning start. Led by one of the best netball tacticians in the game – Rob Wright – the Swifts are a young and incredibly talented playing group, and I expect them to be tenacious and to play with no fear. One sure way to control the game is by treasuring possession, and that’s what I’ll be telling our players before they take the court. Treasure possession, change up the speed of the game, and you’ll go a long way to controlling play. And finally: underestimate the Swifts at your own peril.

CANBERRA GIANTS Netball NSW, in partnership with Netball ACT, announced earlier this year the introduction of the Canberra GIANTS to contest the 2017 Australian Netball League, which begins TONIGHT following the conclusion of the Suncorp Super Netball match. The new ANL team is the first joint venture between Netball NSW and Netball ACT, and will feature young athletes from both respective player pathways as well as coaching talent. The Canberra GIANTS will be overseen by co-Head Coaches Maria Lynch (NSW) and Sharyn Hill (ACT), who will help guide the 14-strong playing group against some of the best and brightest upcoming netball talent from across the country. As one of eight teams contesting the national domestic competition, the Canberra GIANTS will help support their Suncorp Super Netball ‘big sisters’ GIANTS Netball, and will include the four GIANTS Netball training partners Kiera Austin, Maddie Hay, Teigan O’Shannassy and Amy Parmenter in the roster. Officially launching their 2017 ANL Season last week at the National Museum in Canberra, the GIANTS will contest seven rounds during the regular season – looking to finish in the Top 4 to qualify for the 2017 ANL Finals Series, which will be held in Perth the weekend of 8-9 April. Fans are encouraged to stick around after today’s GIANTS Netball game to cheer on our Canberra GIANTS against the Netball NSW Waratahs, with your ticket (including GIANTS Netball Members) allowing you access to remain in your seat.
