WELCOME We are so excited to play our first GIANTS Netball home game in Canberra today! Thank you to all our Members and Fans – both local and who have travelled to AIS Arena – for your support as we look to take on a dangerous Adelaide Thunderbirds outfit in Round 5. I’ve spent a lot of time in Canberra during my time at the Australian Institute of Sport, so I always love coming back. It feels even more special to be here on this historic occasion for GIANTS Netball and to meet our Foundation ACT Members. It’s exciting to be able to bring world-class netball to the region which I have no doubt will inspire the young generation of Canberra netballers. We hope that you enjoy the contest that will be on display today, and remain in your seats to cheer on our Canberra GIANTS in the Australian Netball League afterwards at 3:30pm. I will be! Cheer loud, cheer proud.
QUICK QUESTIONS: JAMIE-LEE PRICE Julie Fitzgerald Head Coach
THEME While we love to spread the joy about our favourite game each and every day, today in particular we are celebrating the incredible support Netball receives in Regional NSW and ACT. From the community spirit in helps create, to the epic road trips to participate in Carnivals, or even the commitment it takes to see your favourite players in action. Regional Netball is one of the best communities to be a part of, and we’re thrilled to host some of you today to AIS Arena. Our cover girl Susan Pettitt is a wonderful example of the netball talent that lies in Regional communities, so keep up the great work and maybe one day you will be a GIANT too!

COUNTRY ROADS, WHERE PRATS BELONGS To call 2017 a bumper year for netball would be an understatement. The rise of Suncorp Super Netball, freeto-air TV deals and better conditions for some of Australia’s finest female athletes is music to the ears of many, but none more so than Susan Pettitt.
“Mum would pick me up again from school on a Friday afternoon and they we’d drive to Sydney which could take between five and six hours so I could train for the weekend with the State Team before getting back on Sunday night and ready to start all over again.”
A legend of New South Wales and Australian netball, Pettitt has clocked up plenty of air-miles throughout the years; however, it was when she was first cutting her teeth in the game that Pettitt found the travel element of sport most taxing.
Prats – as she’s affectionately known by the netball world thanks to her maiden name, Pratley – knows the hard yards that rural netballers have put in across the years have been instrumental in where the sport is today.
“I grew up in a small place called Quaama just outside of Bega which is pretty rural NSW, so it took a lot of commitment from me and my family to ensure I was able to get to where I needed to be to progress,” Pettitt says.
Outside of starring on the court for GIANTS Netball, Pettitt loves taking netball clinics to the country and giving rural netballers opportunities to see how the elite game works – something she didn’t have early on.
“During Year 11 and Year 12 I was in the NSW State Team, I was at the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) and playing State Basketball so I was zig-zagging all over the country for training and games.
“It’s really rewarding to be able to get out to isolated areas because they are just as passionate about the game ”
“A typical week for me back then was going to school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then after school on Wednesday mum would pick me up and drive me to the airport.
“There, I would fly to Sydney, get one of the girls from NSWIS to pick me up and then play State League with them that night. I would then stay with a teammate and get up early the next morning for a flight back home for school on Thursday morning. “Mum would pick me up from school on a Thursday afternoon and we’d drive to Canberra for a State League Basketball game and we’d get back home about midnight and head to bed before school on Friday morning.” Phew. We’re tired just writing that. But that’s not the end of the story for Pettitt.
“Growing up we didn’t really have that many high-profile players coming down to rural areas to take netball clinics,” she adds.
“So for me, about 10 years ago, I really wanted to give back those areas and show them what they can do if they’ve got the commitment and are willing to make sacrifices. If they do they can make it to Australian level. “It’s really rewarding to be able to get out to isolated areas because they are just as passionate about the game as everyone else and there is some great talent out there too.” With Super Netball front and centre of Australian sporting landscape just now, Pettitt knows there has never been a better time to push the game as much as possible in all areas. “It’s funny that people are now starting to recognise us out of uniforms which is really great to see and I hope young girls today realise what players like Liz Ellis, Cath Cox and others have done for netball and how they turned the focus on what makes the game great to a wider audience.” GIANTSMAGAZINE

COACH’S LAST WORDS Despite their position on the ladder, the Adelaide Thunderbirds are a classy outfit and laden with international talent, so my last comments to the GIANTS will be to play smart. Dan Ryan is a very knowledgeable coach, having been an Australian netball representative himself. He has a versatile playing roster so we will have to be prepared for all possible combinations. That said, if we stick to our own game plan – make good decisions, play with patience and confidence – we will be in a good position.
