Working hard off the court.
Round up of all the latest ANZ Championship and NSW Swifts news.
For us, as long as we stick to our game plan and play the short, sharp, strong defensive strategies we’ve become renowned for then we will be in good stead to continue our winning trend in Newcastle.
One of the more iconic events on the Netball NSW calendar, netballers from near and far have travelled to the region for three days of back-to-back action; and I’d like to welcome those who join us for today’s Round 11 Swifts home fixture.
We’ll need all 3,500-plus fans here at Newcastle Entertainment Centre behind us though – so cheer loud, cheer strong, and help be our 13th player.
Yours in netty, The Club always enjoys bringing elite netball to the Newcastle area, and traditionally we’ve been quite successful – particularly over today’s opponents, West Coast Fever. The Swifts have been victorious on both previous occasions we’ve hosted the Fever in Round 4, 2010, and Round 8, 2012. Paige Hadley Turning the Paige Yet Hadley, who’s also had to deal with serious injury after rupturing her ACL in early 2014, isn’t keen to talk shop all the time. Paige Hadley the netballer can be ‘Googled’. Her career, although still in its relative infancy, is now decorated enough to even merit a Wikipedia page. But while netball is important, Hadley admits it’s just one piece of the jigsaw. Education is often the escape route of professional athletes from the blood, sweat and tears of competition, and for the speedy midcourter it’s helped her plan for the future too. “It’s great to have things away from netball,” Hadley says. “At university I try to be Paige Hadley the student, not Paige Hadley the netballer.” Having been diligently working her way towards achieving a degree in Business and Commerce at Western Sydney University over the past five years, for Hadley it’s been an important personal experience. So what is Paige Hadley the student like? “She is just a normal person who studies and does group assignments,” she says smiling. “Around exams and assessments time it can be quite challenging and a balancing act, but it’s also really nice to have something different from netball.”
However, while remaining anonymous on a university campus might seem easy at the beginning, having your face on Fox Sports eventually catches up with you. “Some of my university friends, who before knew nothing about netball, found out about my sporting career and now they come along to the game and absolutely love it. “It’s really nice to see them there but it’s cool when we talk about other things that aren’t netball.” While a welcome distraction for Hadley since her career took off, university can sometimes
next chapter and look to opportunities in the working world.” ANZ Championships, moving to Canberra for AIS commitments and injury have made the road to graduation a long one for Hadley, but the end’s in sight. “It’s been hard but I think I have been persistent and determined to manage both netball and studies and achieve high in both,” she says. A typical Aussie girl, when the down time does arrive Hadley will relax in the way she loves. “For me, I’m a massive beach person, I love being there with family and friends.
“At university I try to be Paige Hadley the student, not Paige Hadley the netballer.” still require her to burn the candle at both ends. That is soon about to change, and when she tosses her graduation hat into the air she’ll be saying goodbye to study sessions in her spare time and hello to rest and relaxation. “I can’t wait for the off-season because for the first time in ages I will actually be able to go on a holiday,” Hadley says. “Obviously with the last few seasons I haven’t been able to do that because I’ve had uni commitments. “Now that I’m finishing my degree this month I’ll be able to have some actual down time. “I’m also excited and proud that I have one university exam to go before I can start the
“I love to swim and any day if it’s nice and hot you’re likely to find me there – swimming, relaxing or going out for nice food and nice brunches.” And she is also looking forward to seeing old friends, who she hasn’t seen enough of recently. “It’s been hard with all of the travelling and obviously playing at the weekend, seeing my family and friends, but once I have down time I’ll be seeing all of them.” The Swifts’ season has some legs in it yet, but when Hadley gets some rest it will certainly be hard earned.

At the age of 23, Paige Hadley has already achieved plenty. She’s a professional sportsperson, represented her family, state and country on netball’s biggest stages, and is a reigning World Champion. Not bad.
NEWS RECORD #SWIFTSFAMILY It was a fun day out at our last home game, with a new ANZ Championship Record Crowd gathering at Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday 29 May to cheer the NSW Swifts to victory. An incredible 13,314 fans clapped and cheered the Swifts to a 58-54 win over the QLD Firebirds – their first win over the reigning Premiers since Round 4, 2014, which also ended the Queenslanders’ record 21-game winning streak. Not only was the action red-hot on court, but there was plenty of entertainment off it with pre-game activations aplenty. A big thank you to all our valued sponsors who assisted with creating an amazing atmosphere as fans filed the Arena.

SAMSUNG STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
It’s a netball bonanza in Newcastle! If you thought a double-header today at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre was all the netball on offer this weekend in the Hunter, then think again. The 2016 Samsung State Championships are being co-hosted this long weekend at Newcastle and Charlestown Netball Associations. Opening bright and early this morning (Saturday 11 June) with the Parade of Districts, 118 teams from 72 Associations will contest three days of back-toback netball before the winners are announced on Monday 13 June. Newcastle Netball Association will host four divisions; Open Championship, 21/U Championship, plus 17/U Championship and 17/U Division Two competitions. At nearby Charlestown Netball Association the Open Division Two and 17/U Division Three contests will be played to determine the 2016 Champions. The inaugural Netball NSW State Championships were held in 1969 at Moore Park, Sydney with 24 Associations participating in two age-divisions – Opens and Cadets – with Manly Warringah Netball Association taking home both titles.
Over the years the tournament has grown and evolved, and in 2015 more than 1,300 athletes from 74 Associations contested nine age-divisions. This year the competition has been split, with the 2016 Netball NSW State Championships – Masters being contested at Netball Central on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May; Manly Warringah (Over 35s) and Gosford (Over 40s) took home the 2016 trophies. Some of your favourite NSW Swifts have participated in State Championships over the years – Kaitlyn Bryce (Sutherland Shire), Paige Hadley (Penrith), Abbey McCulloch (Sutherland Shire), Lauren Moore (Wyong District), and Amy Sommerville (Eastwood Ryde). Even the coaches have had their time at State Champs – both Rob Wright and Anita Keelan coached Eastwood Ryde during the years (Anita also played for Eastwood Ryde!), while Megan Anderson played for both Woy Woy Peninsula and Sutherland Shire Netball Associations. So if you’d like to catch some potential Swifts-in-themaking this weekend, head over to Newcastle and Charlestown Netball Associations to see some of the best young NSW netball talent in action!

WITH ASIAN KALE SLAW SALAD
Prep time 30-40 mins | Cooking time 30-40mins | Australian | Serves 4
SUSA PETT N ITT
SWIF T
SAUSAGE ROLLS Ingredients • 1 cup (70g) fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs • 500g chicken breast mince • 1 egg, plus 1 extra lightly beaten egg • 1 zucchini, finely grated • 1 carrot, finely grated • 1/2 onion, grated • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves • 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves • 4 sheets frozen puff pastry, just thawed • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds • Tomato or sweet chilli or sauce, to serve
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line 2 baking sheets with baking paper. 2. Process crumbs, chicken and unbeaten egg in a food processor until well combined. Place in a bowl, mix well with vegetables and herbs, then season. 3. Place 1 pastry sheet on a floured surface and halve. Spoon an eighth of the mixture lengthways along centre of each piece. Fold 1 edge of pastry over and tuck in beside filling, then fold over other side to make a roll, pressing down lightly to seal. Repeat with remaining pastry and filling. 4. Cut rolls into 3cm pieces and cut two small incisions into each roll to prevent splitting. Place on baking sheets, cover and chill for 30 minutes. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. 5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the rolls are lightly browned and cooked through. Serve with sauce on the side.
