IN THIS ISSUE

Welcome Swifts Family to our first home game of the season, and what a way to kick off with a massive Double Header Event at Qudos Bank Arena!

Abbey McCulloch

The Swifts are going to prove our doubters wrong While the result may have gone against the Swifts on the day, they can at least take some solace in the fact they’d pushed their opponents to the maximum and managed to silence their critics who had written the young team off before the first whistle. It was also a fantastic way to start Suncorp Super Netball, with the world’s best female sporting league well and truly put on the map. For Swifts Captain Abbey McCulloch there are plenty of positives to be taken from that.

In 2008 the Swifts took out the inaugural transTasman Netball League title after defeating the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the Grand Final, and who could forget last year’s amazing round robin win over the Queensland Firebirds in front of a record 13,314 fans? “We love playing at Qudos Bank Arena…it holds so many fond memories. For us to get to play here three times this season is amazing, and I think it’s a fitting venue for where netball is at just now.” It also marks the Club’s first official home game of Suncorp Super Netball, meaning it is the first time the Swifts will play in front of their home supporters in 2017.

and hopefully that will help us against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday.” And so to today’s game. Like the Swifts, the Thunderbirds’ playing group has gone through some significant changes during the off-season but remain, as ever, one of the competition’s heavyweights – and McCulloch is relishing the battle that lies ahead. “I always love playing against the Thunderbirds and they have a new-look line-up so only by examining Round 1 will we able to get an idea of what to expect, which makes them dangerous opposition to play.

The playing roster might look a little different this year, but the Club’s heart and soul remains

“They have got internationals across the board now and it’s a really exciting line-up for them so it will be interesting to see how they put themselves together.”

“In tight games it is your large support that often gives you that little bit extra in the end to get you over the line.”

McCulloch believes Round 1 was just a taster of what the next generation Swifts are all about – and leading them is an honour she cherishes deeply.

“I think we proved a lot of people wrong out on court last week,” she said.

“Some people were saying that we wouldn’t be able to compete but I have seen how hard the team have trained in pre-season and the amazing talent we have in our group and I knew if we stuck at our task we’d be there or thereabouts in the end. “It was also fantastic to see a player like Sarah Klau win MVP for the game. She is an amazing talent and we have so many players like her in the squad it keeps me very excited.” Now it’s back to Qudos Bank Arena and a place that’s been a happy hunting ground for the Swifts in the past.

firmly intact and last week’s performance was a testament to the pride and passion that goes into the Red Dress. “We have played a lot of pre-season games and really enjoyed our hit-out with the GIANTS last week but nothing compares to getting out in front of your own fans and that’s what has been really motivating the team this week,” McCulloch said. “In tight games it is your large supporter base that often gives you that little bit extra in the end to get you over the line. Don’t get me wrong, I think we could have won last week but the Swifts Family do give you that extra boost

In the words of the Swifts Family: “Let’s Go Swifts, Let’s Go!”

5 | NSW SWIFTS INSIDER

In terms of hard hit-outs to start a season, last week’s epic Round 1 clash between the NSW Swifts and GIANTS Netball was certainly one to get the pulse racing.

NEWS GEAR UP FOR CRAZY HAIR & SOCK DAY! Pencil in Saturday 20 May and help support the initiative by signing up your school, workplace, Netball Club or Association to host your own crazy fundraising idea. Last year more than $40,000 was raised by the NSW netball community which went a long way in helping The Kids’ Cancer Project continue to do incredible work. The NSW Swifts will hold our official Crazy Hair & Sock Game in Round 8 on Sunday 9 April, so start planning those outrageous outfits to get amongst it!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! Your NSW Swifts are turning double digits this season, with the Club celebrating 10 years in 2017. It’s been a brilliant period of growth and support since 2008 in which the Swifts claimed the inaugural trans-Tasman Netball League title! Since then we’ve welcomed new faces, both on and off the court, and re-written the record books; the largest ever netball crowd of 13,314 fans at a domestic game, back-to-back Grand Final appearances (including a heart-stopping Double Extra Time thriller), as well as welcoming hundreds of thousands of Member & Fans to our home games. Thank you Swifts Family for being a part of this incredible journey – we look forward to what lies ahead! Share your favourite moments across the years by using the hashtag #SwiftsTurn10 on social media.

Here at the Swifts, we always love to take the time to present our Swifts Family with a special gift or two – and this season we have introduced a special commemorative coin for the lucky Members who have the opportunity to toss the coin prior to a Swifts home game. Members are randomly selected to officially toss the coin before the match to determine the first centre pass, and this year will take home a commemorative coin to mark the occasion.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Despite what the score suggests, the Swifts encountered a determined Thunderbirds outfit in Round 12, 2016 when the NSW side finished 67-53 victors at Adelaide’s Titanium Security Arena. While the 14-goal winning margin looked comfortable, the Swifts were pushed for the full 60 minutes by the home side, led by their Captain Erin Bell at goal attack.

NETBALL NEW SOUTH WALES

WARATAHS

The 2017 ANL competition will be contested by eight teams from every State and Territory, and will see each ANL team directly aligned with a corresponding Suncorp Super Netball franchise: for your NSW Swifts, it is the Netball NSW Waratahs. Historically, the Waratahs have been a successful ANL side having featured in the Finals Series all but once, and were the first side to claim the Premiership title undefeated (in 2011, under now Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright). It is a tradition that 2017 Head Coach Briony Akle is keen to continue. At the helm of last year’s Waratah side that finished Runners-Up to Victorian Fury, Akle said the NSW athletes selected for this year’s ANL are a mixture of experience and youth, but all played with the same pride in representing NSW on the elite stage. “I think we’ve selected a team of athletes who really complement each other and have experience on the ANL stage,” Akle said. “It’s also really important for Netball NSW we continue to provide our younger athletes the

Rd Date 1 2

Time

opportunity to step up and experience netball on the big stage, so I’m really excited to see how Lili, Tayla and Olivia will go in learning from the players around them and taking their games to the next level. “Obviously we came really close last year by getting to the Grand Final, and certainly that will provide motivation as we enter the 2017 season. But we only have a handful of players returning from 2016 so for me it’s about ensuring the team gels together well and they are given the opportunity to write their own story.” The Waratahs finished with a mixed bag of results from Round 1 against fellow Netball NSW-side, the Canberra GIANTS. In the opening contest at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre (which followed the amazing GIANTS Netball v NSW Swifts Suncorp Super Netball thriller), the Waratahs finished eight-goal victors (58-50), only to fall to the GIANTS in their re-match the following day at Genea Netball Centre, 45-46. Back on home soil, the Waratahs will host Southern Force in Round 2 ANL action this weekend at Genea Netball Centre; they play tonight, Saturday 25 February, at 7:30pm before a re-match tomorrow, Sunday 26 February, at 1:00pm at the same venue. Head on down to Genea Netball Centre and help cheer on our mighty Netball NSW Waratahs as they embark on securing their ninth ANL Finals Series campaign … and hopefully brings home their second title.

COACH’S LAST WORDS The team weren’t happy with their opening round performance – particularly our start – so we’ve been working hard to address those issues at training in preparation for Fever this week.

We had a couple pretty good hit-outs against West Coast during pre-season, and they proved to be tough opponents. While the injection of English international Stacey Francis in Fever’s back-end is a good defensive boost, I believe their real firepower lies in the shooting combination of Kate Beveridge and Nat Medhurst. Both are classy players who have been playing together for a long time, so limiting their influence will go a long way in helping us claim the win. But it isn’t just down to our circle defenders – the pressure needs to come from our attacking end down the court. Hands up, contest the first ball and watch the obstruction.

“It’s great that Super Netball is able to attract players from all over the world and it’s great to play your compatriots.

That’s exactly what GIANTS Netball’s English import Jo Harten will be looking to do today at Qudos Bank Arena when she hits the court for the Club’s Round 2 Suncorp Super Netball clash with the West Coast Fever.

“I’m going to look out for my English international teammate Stacey Francis who is likely to come up against me in defence,” she says.

It’s always nice being able to revisit the scene of former triumphs, and even better if you can add to those treasured memories.

“I have had really good experiences at Qudos Bank Arena and it’s a place I really love playing at,” Harten says. “I played the World Cup there and won a Bronze Medal playing for England against Jamaica, which is a very fond memory and the last club game I played there was for the Magic when we beat the Swifts by one goal. “So I’m stoked to be going back and playing at Qudos Bank Arena.” Last weekend was a special one for Harten and her GIANTS Netball teammates as they overcame a huge challenge from local rivals, the NSW Swifts, to announce their arrival on the sporting landscape with a win. Harten also registered the first goal in the Club’s Super Netball history, a record no-one can ever take from her. “Last week was just amazing. The vibe, the colour, the fanfare and seeing all the hard work the team, coaches and organisation put into this Club come together was a highlight for me.

“They also have Nat Medhurst in their team, who is a world-class gun, so nothing short of a full four-quarter performance will do against the Fever as they have the ability to strike fast and hurt you.” Harten was well respected by everyone involved in the trans-Tasman League, and her time with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic is one she’ll always cherish. But even she admits that the move to Suncorp Super Netball has meant a step-up in intensity for everyone.

“It is definitely a step towards Test level as you are backing up every week in Super Netball... you need to be on your toes for 60 minutes no matter what team you are playing against”

“In terms of the environment and training there is definitely a step up in intensity,” she says. “It is definitely a step towards Test level as you are backing up every week in Super Netball and you need to be on your toes for 60 minutes no matter what team you are playing against, because they have incredible talent littered all over the court. “It’s the same game but you just have to play it at that next level up and I have really enjoyed coming across to Australia, living in Sydney and training out of Gena Netball Centre and the GIANTS facilities.

“It’s been a really good experience so far and, just like everyone else at GIANTS Netball, I am really enjoying the journey we are on at the Club.”

“I am honoured to be the player to score the first Suncorp Super Netball goal for the Club but I was more pleased that we managed to grind out a win against the Swifts, who pushed us all the way. “I also can’t wait to see an even bigger Sea of Orange in Round 2. Their support was amazing in Round 1 and the way they cheered us on really gave the side a boost in that final quarter, where the game was won.”

Sydney is definitely sunnier than England at this time of year but the recent heatwaves have been hard on those of northern hemisphere origin. So how does Harten cope with the heat? “I don’t, not at all” she says, smiling.

This weekend presents a different challenge for GIANTS Netball and Harten is fully focused on what is set to be another titanic battle for the team as they look to go two-from-two.

But long as she keeps bringing the heat to GIANTS Netball’s opponents, we won’t mind.

Ahead of the game Harten is looking forward to meeting a familiar Fever face out on court.

GIANTS NEWS

WELCOME Welcome back to our amazing Members and Fans to what will be a massive day; our first Double Header Event at Qudos Bank Arena! This venue has become synonymous with big crowds who make a lot of noise, and we are hoping that continues as GIANTS Netball takes the court against West Coast Fever today. We enjoyed a couple good hit-outs with Fever during a pre-season visit west, so we’re anticipating a red-hot contest from the relatively young roster. They’re attacking end in Kate Beveridge and Captain Nat Medhurst is chock-full of experience and talent, as well as an energetic backend led by English international Stacey Francis. If pre-season is any indication, the Fever will be tenacious for the full 60 minutes so we cannot afford any moments where we drop our focus; they can and will score quickly if that happens. So while we concentrate on the job at hand, we hope everyone enjoys the party-like atmosphere at Qudos Bank Arena. Enjoy the music, the dancing and – most importantly – the world-class netball on display. Cheer loud, cheer proud.
