NNSW WARATAHS

How wonderful we’re finally here to play our first NSW Swifts home game of Suncorp Super Netball at one of my favourite venues, Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. This stadium has been good to the Swifts in recent times, and we hope to continue that winning trend against one of the competition’s most formidable teams – Collingwood Magpies Netball Club. Our playing roster is vastly different to their internationally laden team; but we’ve shown in the first half of this season the Swifts play an exciting brand of netball and are up for the contest, so we’ll be looking to do that again today.

Your presence in the stands will really help us with that challenge, so make sure you get up out your seats Red Army and cheer loudly for your Swifts – we want to make sure the Magpies know they’re on our turf. Yours in netball,

Rob Wright Head Coach

MEMBERS’ ROUND

Round up of all the latest NSW Swifts news.

Today we would like to pay special tribute to those who have shown unwavering support of our Club, who Rob Wright describes as “the world’s best Fans” … and that, of course, is our NSW Swifts Members.

Through thick and thin, our Members have been united in their “Let’s Go Swifts, Let’s Go!” chants, have turned up in their droves on Game Day and at special Club events, and have even travelled interstate to support our mighty Swifts on the road.

Sarah Klau shares a bit about herself.

Proudly presented by our Major Partner BIOGLAN

And for all that and more, the Club wants to say THANK YOU.

Paige Hadley Believes in the Swifts’ Culture Club When Head Coach Rob Wright first shared with Paige Hadley his vision for the NSW Swifts in the new era of Suncorp Super Netball, it didn’t take much to convince the midcourter to stay with the famous Red Dress. Hard work and long-term vision are nothing new to our Vice-Captain. The World Cupwinning Australian Diamond loves to meet a challenge head on, and the next generation Swifts symbolise just that – with plenty excitement and raw talent thrown in too. Today’s game against Collingwood Magpies Netball Club represents a homecoming of sorts for the Swifts. It’s the Club’s first home game of 2017 in their spiritual home, Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, and a big new rival to meet head on.

“It’s always special when you can interact with your home fans and get them behind you as they really do give you a lift when you need it most,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for the new players we have this year to get to know our amazing fans and members who have stuck with us and I know they can’t wait to embrace the Red Family.” The Magpies bring with them one of the most experienced and renowned squads in the Super Netball competition, and for Hadley the best opportunity for the Swifts to really test themselves against the best.

“Every game is tough – this new competition has shown that already, but coming up against a team the calibre of the Magpies will be a real indicator about where we are at. We have shown real glimpses of quality netball and now it is about getting more consistent.” Hadley acknowledges there have been some tough lessons learnt, but it’s all good education and, as the Swifts motto goes, from adversity comes great people. “Every game feels like a Grand Final at the moment because there are so many great teams in the new competition and the standard is so high.

“I stayed in the Red Dress because I believe in the Swifts culture. I believe rocky times bring about good people and I don’t just want to work hard “I stayed in the Red Dress because I believe in the to be one of world’s Swifts culture... I don’t just want to work hard to be one best netballers, but to be the best of world’s best netballers, but to be the best version version of myself of myself too.” too.”

“We haven’t played a home game at the Sports Centre yet this year with our amazing Swifts Family behind us, so I cannot wait and get out there in front of the Red Army and show them what this team can do,” she says.

While players like Hadley and Captain Abbey McCulloch know well what to expect from a pumped-up Swifts support in a cauldronlike Sports Centre, the experience will be a new one for many of the Club’s new roster. This, however, is just another opportunity for them to shine and one Hadley knows the

“When I re-signed with the Swifts for 2017, Rob told me about his vision for the Club. I knew we wouldn’t be an overnight success but I really respect and believe in Rob’s vision; with the talent we have I know something special is coming. “It will be nice to catch up with friends in the Magpies side, but what I am really looking forward to is seeing how our squad matches up against some of the best players in the league.

And that’s music to the ears of Swifts Fans everywhere.

It’s on days like this that Hadley loves what she does more than ever.

next generation are ready to grab with both hands.

NEWS PICK THE TRUTH Ever wondered how well your NSW Swifts know each other? Well in 2017 we put them to the test with Pick the Truth! We pit two individuals up against each other to determine what is a lie and what is a truth. Two lies, one truth…can you pick the REAL story? Head to nswswifts.com.au to check out which Swifts have been put to the test so far…

HAPPY 50TH MAD-DOG She’s relatively new to the Swifts Family, but midcourter Maddy Proud (aka Mad Dog) is set to celebrate a personal milestone at today’s game. Should Rob Wright give her the nod to take the court, Maddy will make her 50th elite game appearance – amazing! Maddy has been playing top-level netball since 2011 when she was the youngest player in trans-Tasman Netball League history…until good friend and former teammate Cody Lange took that mantle from her later! Congratulations on an exciting career so far Maddy – we look forward to seeing more excellence in the Red Dress.

WRIGHT’S ONE TO WATCH

Looking at the line-up, there’s clearly a number of players that you could identify as game changers. But for me it’s not necessarily a player, but a key combination that will be One to Watch this week. Ash Brazill has been in red-hot form of late, and when she is she allows Sharni Layton to really get involved in the game. Therefore it’s key to disrupt that connection. When Braz is doing her job she helps create a bottleneck in the opposition attacking line by slowing up play and keeping her opponents off the circle edge. That allows Sharni to see the play coming at her earlier which – you guessed it – gives her the opportunity to go hunting for the intercept. Therefore it’s important we use our speed to get into the circle to deny Magpies’ defenders to set-up. We need to ensure that we treasure possession and be patient, allowing our shooters to open up the circle to receive the feed.
