Out to repay family faith
First up can I say how amazing our Red Army was last weekend. Your noise and support was absolutely amazing and the team and I appreciate it hugely. While the one-goal loss to the Magpies was obviously disappointing, the team performance filled me with great heart as our young team showed they can match it with the best players Suncorp Super Netball has to offer. Every week we are looking to be better than we were the week before and we definitely achieved that. Today is about doing the same again. GIANTS Netball have been the form team so far this year and we will have to be at our very best to get one over our fellow NSW rivals – and we are calling on our Red Army to get behind us again. You are the best fans in the world and it’s like
having an eighth player on the court when you cheer loud and proud. Our young squad are starting to find their feet around the brilliant leadership pairing of Captain Abbey McCulloch and Vice-Captain Paige Hadley. There will always be bumps along the way when you invest in the future but this group excites me. Today is another chance to show what we’ve got.

Helen Housby
Out to repay family faith When Helen Housby was first told the NSW Swifts were interested in recruiting her for 2017, she initially couldn’t believe it. “When my Performance Director in England emailed and told me I thought it was spam mail or a prank,” she says. “Before I even opened the email I already had my answer, I replied immediately and said of course I would be interested. “My heart was just pounding, but I kind of always knew that Sydney was where I would end up.” Growing up Housby played “all the sports under the sun” but wasn’t instantly drawn to netball like most of her teammates.
rising netball star adapted to but she admits it was quite difficult. “It’s pretty hard to be fair,” she reflects. “It was difficult because the last few years of school are where you go through all of your intense exams and I loved school so I wanted to do well, but every free period we got I would be catching up on sleep while my classmates studied.”
“My family have been there for me since day one and I know my mum has sacrificed a lot for me and I feel like I am starting to repay her by playing professionally and internationally,” the Goal Attack said. “You do everything to make your family proud and make them happy so doing something with your life that they can be proud of and say ‘that’s my daughter’, that’s what I believe is the definition of family.”
However it was this time that made her truly understand just how much commitment was required to become an elite netballer, and not just for herself.
For Housby there are more challenges to come, however, this time she has one of the best elite netball environments in the world around her.
“My mum gave up a lot of things to make sure that I was happy, when I was doing my last years of school,” she adds.
She also has a few animal-related ones too. “I absolutely miss my animals back home so I want to adopt a little kitten but Sam Wallace,
“You do everything to make your family proud and make them happy so doing something with your life that they can be proud of... that’s what I believe is the definition of family”
“It wasn’t until I was 16 that I began to get more involved with netball. I was captain of my school team, but I was actually going to give it up because I played so many other sports. “I got a place in the Manchester Thunder team so I decided to stay and a year later I was playing in the World Cup, which was quite a shock.” Juggling an elite netball career, final school exams and a social life was something the
“I was travelling down to Manchester three or four times a week and we wouldn’t get home until midnight or 1am. “Mum would pick me up as soon as school finished and she was just the best person ever. She would have lasagne and pasta ready for me so I could eat on the way down. “I would train for two hours, then she would drive me all the way home again.” Seven years on the sacrifices are paying off for the 22-year-old, and she can’t thank those who have helped her along the way enough.
who is my housemate, doesn’t want one,” she giggles. “I’m trying my hardest to persuade her so we will just have to wait and see what the outcome is.”

“When I was younger if I wanted to be good at netball or train somewhere decent I would have to travel two and a half hours to Manchester,” she said.
