WELCOME We’re excited to open today’s BLOCKBUSTER Double Header Event at Qudos Bank Arena! If Round 2 is anything to go by, those here in the crowd are in for a netball delight with two Suncorp Super Netball games played back-to-back. And this time, there’s State Rivalry at stake. GIANTS Netball will co-host our Victorian rivals – Collingwood Magpies Netball and Melbourne Vixens – with the NSW Swifts, and we all know there’s nothing better than beating the VICs. The Magpies have undoubtedly one of the best and most experienced line-ups in the competition, so we will need to be switched on from the first centre pass. T o give us the extra edge, I encourage all our GIANTS Netball Members and Fans to stand and cheer loud for us. Your support is crucial to helping us over the line, and we will need it again today in what is a hotly anticipated re-match from Round 3. Let’s bring it home GIANTS!

Netball is a family affair. It’s not just players who ride the blood, sweat and tears training everyday but those closest to them who often come along for the journey. Take any well respected sportsperson and you can be sure there’s a great support network around them. The rewards in professional sport can be wonderful but the path to success is almost always shared and rarely taken alone. Sam Poolman has never forgotten this. Every time the GIANTS defender takes the court she’s not just representing the Club, her native Newcastle and New South Wales, but her close-knit family who gave her a chance in the first place. The path to representing her home state at the elite level may have been the long way around – Poolman cut her teeth with the Adelaide Thunderbirds after starring for NSW at underage levels – but even from afar she was always keen on repaying her family’s faith. “I have been really lucky with how my family has supported me and given me every chance to succeed,” Poolman says.
one of millions of Australians affected everyday by the insidious disease. “I was in South Australia when my grandad was at his worst and it is so hard to imagine what it must be like for someone forgetting who they are, and those they love,” she says. “This was really affecting my family, who were so supportive of me, and I wanted to do something to help.” Despite being in another state, Poolman decided to be proactive. Using her profile as an elite athlete, she touched base with Alzheimer’s South Australia to see if there was anything she could do to raise awareness about the disease. Needless to say, the help was greatly appreciated.

“I had my Mum, Dad, brothers and grandparents who were just amazing and a real work ethic was instilled in us from an early age which I think has been of huge value to me in my netball career.” A particularly special relationship for Poolman was the one she had with her maternal grandfather, Gordon. A hardworking family man, Poolman has inherited the same noholds-barred attitude when it comes to her game. Australians love their sport, but often the hardest battles are at home. The fight against Alzheimer’s disease is one such battle that families can’t forget after the final whistle. For Poolman, one of the saddest days in her life came when she lost grandad Gordon to Alzheimer’s, becoming
When the call came from GIANTS Netball Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald about moving back to her home state to play for Netball NSW’s second professional franchise, Poolman jumped at the chance but was also keen to ensure her Alzheimer’s awareness work wouldn’t fall by the wayside.
“Getting to play for the GIANTS and having the chance to represent my home State is a dream come true and it also brings me closer to my family,” she adds. “When I got back here I touched base with Alzheimer’s NSW to say I would like to help like I did in SA and they have been amazing. “What really drives me to do this is my grandmother. She met my grandad when they were both just 14 years old and for her to lose him like that was so upsetting. “My family have given me so much down the years so me helping to raise Alzheimer’s awareness is the least I can do.” Poolman walks the walk on court and she’s more than prepared to do the same off it. NEWS OBST NAMES NWYC SQUAD
We are GIANTS Netball
Tania Obst has been wearing two hats this year, as our GIANTS Netball Assistant Coach and the Australian 21/U Head Coach. It’s the latter that made news recently, with Obst naming the 24-player Australian Squad to prepare for the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana later this year.

The squad will continue their preparations under the watchful eye of Obst and her coaching team, before selectors name the 12 athletes in May who will represent their country in July against the best young netball talent in the world.

GIANT #11 After being called in as temporary replacement for the Round 7 NSW Derby, Sarah Wall took the court in the Wing Attack bib during the third quarter to become our 11th GIANTS Netball player. Sarah was called in to the team to cover for her good friend, and our injured Captain, Kimberlee Green, and coincidentally took the court in place of her other good friend, Taylah Davies. Further proof netball is one big happy family! Congratulations Sarah and welcome to the GIANTS Netball Family!

BRONZE FINISH FOR GIANTS The Canberra GIANTS have capped off a stunning debut Australian Netball League season, finishing with a Bronze Medal at the Finals Series held in Perth, WA on 8-9 April. After falling to eventual Champions - and hosts - Western Sting 66-72 in the Semi Final, which went into Extra Time, the GIANTS met QLD Fusion in the Preliminary Final to play-off for third place. It was another thrilling contest, fitting for Finals netball, with the third place play-off also going into Extra Time. However on this occasion the GIANTS were able to finish strong, eventually running away to a 71-64 victory to claim the Bronze Medal. Congratulations to Western Sting, who defeated reigning Premiers VIC Fury 63-47 to claim their maiden ANL title.

COACH’S LAST WORDS After a tough first half of the season, Clubs eagerly embraced the Bye Round to allow sore and tired bodies a chance to rest. But a week off can also disrupt momentum, and a coach knows only too well the dangers of the Bye week. The Magpies are no doubt a talented unit and on their day can produce stunning netball. Our Round 3 contest at Hisense Arena is one of my highlights of the season to date – it was a strong contest from start to finish, and I think one of our best games so far. I believe what got us the win was our refusal to move away from the game plan, working efficiently and patiently in attack, and never giving up our pressure over the ball. We will need more of the same when we step out on court today.

Give for a Goal WHAT IS THE CONFIDENT GIRLS FOUNDATION? The Confident Girls Foundation aims to provide opportunities for vulnerable girls to thrive through netball. Using netball as a delivery tool, we are assisting vulnerable girls and their communities to overcome gender, social and cultural barriers. We want them to recognise that they have the skills and capabilities to achieve their dreams. We raise funds, and distribute them to our netball Member Organisations across Australia who run inclusive programs, building resilience. Through netball, the Confident Girls Foundation is creating opportunities for girls to come together and build confidence, empowerment, leadership, acceptance, and a sense of belonging, transforming confident girls into confident women.

NEWS O’BRIEN NAMED IN NWYC SQUAD NSW Swifts rookie Claire O’Brien has been named in the Australian 21/U Squad, which was announced by Netball Australia on Tuesday 11 April. O’Brien, alongside Swifts Training Partner Rudi Ellis, were included in the 24-athlete squad which was selected by Australian World Youth Cup Head Coach Tania Obst, alongside national selector Jill McIntosh and Netball Australia’s General Manager Pathways Stacey West, following athletes’ performances in Suncorp Super Netball and the Australian Netball League. The final 12-athlete Team to contest the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone, Botswana, will be named later in the year. Congrats COB and Rudi!

Acai and Mixed Berry Chia Pudding • 3 tbsp Bioglan Organic Chia seeds
½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)

2 tsp Bioglan Organic Acai + Berry Powder
•
1 tbsp Bioglan Organic Coconut Sugar, or to taste
•
¼ cup Frozen mixed berries (thawed and pureed)
•
Overnight Oats
Acai & Mixed Berry Chia Pudding 1. Add ingredients in a bowl and whisk until well combined. 2. Cover and let sit for 2-3 minutes. 3. Stir mixture again to prevent chia seeds from clumping, and then chill in the fridge for minimum 4 hours (can be left to chill overnight). Chocolate Overnight Oats 1. Add ingredients in a bowl and whisk until well combined. 2. Seal with lid and chill in the fridge for 4 hours (can be left to chill overnight). Coconut Whipped Cream 1. Open chilled can and scoop solid white coconut cream into a bowl, leaving the remaining water at the bottom of can. 2. Add maple syrup and vanilla extract to coconut cream. Using an electric hand mixer, beat until smooth.

¾ cup rolled oats

1 tbsp maple syrup, or to taste

1 can full-fat coconut milk, chilled in fridge for 24 hours

To assemble parfait… 1. Once chia pudding and oats are ready, scoop in whipped coconut cream to the bottom of glass or jar. 2. Add chocolate overnight oats on top. 3. Follow with acai and mixed berries chia pudding. 4. Continue to repeat layers until the top of jar or glass. 5. Top parfait with Bioglan Coconut Chips or toppings of your choice. Enjoy!

LAST TIME WE MET It was a gutsy performance from the NSW Swifts when they travelled to Hisense Arena to meet the Melbourne Vixens in Round 3. A classic NSW v VIC contest, the Vixens had the upper hand for the majority of the 60 minutes. But the Swifts weren’t satisfied to go without a fight, clawing back a six-goal deficit with minutes to play to draw scores level within the last 10 seconds of the match to come home with one point; final score 59-59.

a chilled determination Sydney might be a long way from Trinidad & Tobago, but with a family like the NSW Swifts home never feels far away for Sam Wallace. One of the most exciting players to have emerged this season, Wallace has been a sensation for the young NSW outfit since making her debut in Round 1. A star of the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015, the 23-year-old already had some profile before taking up a contract with the Swifts. But her quick rise to fan favourite in a matter of weeks has taken even Wallace by surprise. “What I love most about being with the Swifts is the teammates, coaches, staff and fans,” Wallace says with a big smile on her face. “It is like a really big family which is very important to me as where I’m from is quite far from here. “Everyone has been so welcoming, and that is what I was looking for. Everyone looks out for everyone else, makes sure you are feeling good, so it is a great place to be and it is something I really cherish.” Leaving home to pursue a netball dream is nothing new for Wallace. Growing up in the small village of Toco in north-east Trinidad, Wallace spent hours on the road to get to training or games. When the chance came to play in the English Super League, Wallace jumped at the chance and
soon set the competition alight with her abilities. A star turn in both the Netball World Cup and English Super League, Wallace was soon in Rob Wright’s sights with the Head Coach offering her an opportunity to test her athletic ability and raw talent in the world’s best netball competition; Suncorp Super Netball. “I love the netball here in Australia as it is so much faster than anything I have played before,” Wallace says. “The competitiveness is also so much more intense and I have had to move with that. “I really, really like how the game is played and don’t think I’d be able to readjust to the slower pace anymore.”
“I loved the way she would get a crowd going and how she was able to stand up to players who might be bigger than her. It was then that I thought I would love to play in the same team as her. “She is so slim but she can really take a hit and keep going and that’s what I love. I want us to form an unstoppable partnership – that is what I want for the future.” Which will be music to the Swifts Family’s ears, and in particular Rob Wright who Wallace says has been great at adding more layers to her game. “His coaching style is nothing like I have ever had before,” she says.
“I love the netball here in Australia as it is so much faster than anything I have played before” A real highlight for Wallace has been her growing partnership with fellow international shooter, Helen Housby. Like Wallace, the English representative made her Australian debut in 2017 after playing in the English Super League and it was there that Wallace first noticed her now shooting partner. “I remember playing against Helen in England when I was with Mavericks and she was with the Thunder,” Wallace adds.
“My coach at the Trinidad & Tobago national team is a man and sometimes I feel like I listen more to a male coach, but Rob is so good a breaking the game down for me and helping to improve the whole team. “I just love working with him.” Given the love bestowed to Wallace already it seems the Swifts Family are loving what she does for him on the court too.

Welcome back to Qudos Bank Arena, a happy hunting ground for the NSW Swifts. It was awesome stepping out in front of 6,700-plus people in Round 2 when we took on the Adelaide Thunderbirds, and can’t wait to hear your cheers again today. We’ll need our entire Swifts Family in full voice as it’s sure to be tough out on court against the Melbourne Vixens. I’m a big fan of the way they play; they’re quick, skilful and sharp, so we will need to be on from the very first whistle or risk being left behind.
