Welcome Welcome to season 7 of the ANZ Championship. Can I just start with saying how great the NSW Swifts’ Members and fans are! More than 1600 Members, another Club record, is just remarkable and we hope you are just as eager as we for the 2014 season. This season the NSW Swifts have six new faces in the playing roster, which is certainly something exciting for both the present and future of our Club. With such change, we are under no illusions that it will take time for the hard work that the players, and the entire Club, have undertaken during the Pre-Season to really bed in. It is going to be an amazing journey and one we want to share with you. The 2014 ANZ Championship will also see a different look to our coaching team. After the past four years as the Club’s Assistant Coach, this will be my first season as the Head Coach, and I am extremely fortunate to have Megan Anderson and Anita Keelan alongside me on the bench. As a coaching team, we have been preparing for today since last July, so we too cannot wait for our season proper to get underway.

Today’s game is going to be intense. The West Coast Fever have recruited a star-studded line-up and are one of the favourites for this year’s Championship. We welcome Norma Plummer AM, her team, plus their supporters to our home here at Sydney Olympic Park, and look forward to the challenge that they will pose. The NSW Swifts are very fortunate to have the best supporters in the ANZ Championship; the noise and support you generate from your seats in the RED ZONE is really felt by the team out on court. We ask that you continue this support with vigor today as we embark on a new season together.

HADLEY NAMED AUSTRALIAN 21/U PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Late last year the NSW Swifts unveiled its Leadership Group for the 2014 ANZ Championship season, announcing midcourter and current Australian Diamond Kimberlee Green will lead the side in 2014.

“During our pre-season induction camp, the playing group developed the concept of what leadership should be and identified the need to have leaders across the entire court, so this new structure will support this ethos.

NSW Swifts’ midcourter Paige Hadley capped off a sensational 2013 being named Australian 21/U Player of the Year at the Australian Netball Awards held on the Gold Coast last October.

Green, 27, who has played for the Swifts since making her National League debut in 2004, has taken on the Captaincy role fulltime and will be supported by a leadership team of three that includes shooters Carla Dziwoki and Susan Pratley plus defender Sharni Layton.

“Kim, Susan, Carla and Sharni all have their own unique leadership skills, but together they complement each other extremely well. Not only will they drive our current roster forward but pass their knowledge onto our emerging leaders, in turn creating their own legacy,” concluded Wright.

It’s was an amazing 12 months for the 21-year-old from Penrith in Sydney’s Western Suburbs.

The decision to appoint Kim Green as Captain was a simple one for Head Coach Rob Wright.

Green has been a long-time member of the Swifts’ Leadership Group, having been CoVice-Captain in both 2010 and 2011, and in 2012 and 2013 she shared the captaincy duties with Swifts great Mo’onia Gerrard.

“Kim is such a standout leader and that has been shown with her recognition as Vice-Captain of the Australian Diamonds in their series win against the Malawi Queens in October last year,” Wright said at the time of the announcement. “Kim is also quintessentially ‘Swifts’ and embodies what it means to be a NSW Swift. Having played her entire professional career with Netball NSW, Kim understands the responsibilities that come with representing this Club and our supporters. “Not only is she a role model but is highly respected by her peers for her leadership, netball ability and professionalism – making Kim the perfect candidate to represent the Club and take our exciting roster forward,” Wright explained. Previously the NSW Swifts have had a Captain or Co-Captain and Vice-Captain structure but the adoption of a Leadership Group was done to reflect the evolving nature of the sport.

“I’m extremely proud to be leading the NSW Swifts again,” Green said at the time of the announcement. “Although leadership is a responsibility we all share, captaining the Club I represent with such pride remains a great honour and a career highlight. “With new faces and philosophies in both our coaching team and roster in 2014, it’s a very exciting time for all associated with the NSW Swifts. “I’m also looking forward to supporting and working alongside Rob [Wright] in his role as Head Coach. He is a coach I have the highest regard for and along with the newly assembled coaching team, I’m eager to see what we can collectively achieve,” concluded Green.

Having been named in the NSW Swifts 12-player roster for the 2013 season, Paige featured in all 13 ANZ Championship games for the Swifts, claiming match MVP honours in Round 10 against Northern Mystics.

Wollongong, and on Saturday 19 October, she starred in the home side’s 27-goal win and was named the game’s MVP. Paige went on to represent Australia as a member of the Fast5 Flyers, who claimed silver in the 2013 Fast5 Netball World Series in Auckland during November. The recipient of the 2013 NSW Swifts Coaches Award, Paige will continue to thrill Swifts supporters in the coming seasons having signed a new two year contract with the Club during the off-season.

Earlier that same week, Paige achieved a long-term goal by being named in the Australian 21/U team for the 2013 World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, going on to claim the silver medal. In July 2013, the dynamic midcourter was named in the Australian Diamonds squad for a selection camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), later being named in the Diamonds team to play a two-Test Series against Malawi Queens. On Wednesday 16 October, Paige become the 161st player to don the green and gold when she made her Australian Diamonds debut in the team’s win over Malawi in

Wright said that all members of the 2014 Leadership Group were chosen based upon the core values of the NSW Swifts and their ability to influence the change room.

MKOLOMA INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME

“We are very fortunate to have several players in the current roster with leadership experience, which will be invaluable during our new campaign.

NSW Swifts defender Sonia Mkoloma has been inducted into the England Netball Hall of Fame, reflecting her status as a true great of English netball.

FIRST 500 RETURNS IN 2014! Following the huge success of our First 500 initiative from last season, the NSW Swifts are bringing it back for season 2014.

The 35-year-old defender received the honour during England’s second Test match against South Africa at London’s Wembley Arena last year.

The Club are rewarding fans for coming early to our home games with the First 500 supporters to receive a special gift.

Mkoloma, who in 2014 will contest her fifth consecutive season for the NSW Swifts, has played 111 tests for England and represented her country at three Commonwealth Games and three Netball World Champs.

Today’s First 500 gift is a special Sporty Swift Face Mask – Did you get yours today?!

NSW Swifts Head Coach Rob Wright said this honour was richly deserved.

Help create a #SeaofRed by wearing your Sporty Swift Face Mask not just during today’s game but throughout the season.

“Not only has Sonia been a champion player for England for more than a decade, she is a true leader on and off the court,” Wright said.

“She remains one of the best defenders in world netball, and her will to win and thirst for continual improvement are just two reasons why she is revered by her peers,” concluded Wright.

GERRARD NAMED FINALIST FOR NSW WOMAN OF THE YEAR NSW netball icon Mo’onia Gerrard is one of four finalists for this year’s NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year. Mo’onia, 33, has been nominated not only for her sporting prowess, but for her mentorship of girls in sport. Proudly NSW, Mo’onia is a veteran of 181 elite domestic games and has represented her country on 68 occasions. Although currently taking a break from playing elite netball to pursue her Olympic Rugby Sevens dream, Mo’onia is still involved with the Swifts as the Club’s Contracted Defensive Specialist Coach. In addition to her work on the court, Mo’onia is hugely passionate about providing leadership and mentoring to girls throughout NSW, particularly those from diverse communities. With the support of Netball NSW, Mo’onia created the Oceania Netball Cup in 2012 which provides an opportunity for girls from Polynesian background to come together for two-days of fun, exercise and camaraderie.

“To even be in the same company as these three inspiring women is truly humbling.” “Growing up, there were not too many Islander girls taking up sport seriously. I wanted to teach girls from different backgrounds to be proud of who they are and where they come from – be yourself, be unique,” Gerrard said. Netball NSW Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Campbell said this nomination was acknowledgement for an inspiring woman.

CAITLIN’S 80TH ANZ CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Although today marks her first official match in the NSW Swifts’ Red, Blue and White, Caitlin Thwaites has been around elite netball from an early age and today will notch up her 80th ANZ Championship appearance. Making her debut for the Melbourne Kestrels as a 15-year-old in the former national league, Caitlin had the unenviable task for a young up-and-comer by stepping out against Australian netball legend Liz Ellis at GK in her first match.

“I’m delighted for Mo’onia, this recognition is richly deserved, not only is she one of this country’s finest athletes but her giving knows no bounds,” Campbell said.

Since that fateful day, Caitlin has taken the court 123 times for the Kestrels, Melbourne Vixens (2008-2010) and Central Pulse (20112013), and today will add to that should she take the court against the West Coast Fever.

“Mo’onia is passionate about inspiring young girls to become the best they can be, and we are proud to support her endeavours I this area, particularly in running the annual Oceania Netball Cup.”

The Australian Diamonds shooter currently sits fourth in career ANZ Championship goals scored with 2,415 goals to her name at 83 per cent accuracy – that’s an average of 31 goals per game played. The 27-year-old finished

The Premier’s Woman of the Year will be announced at a ceremony on Friday 7 March, 2014.

During the off-season, the ANZ Championship confirmed all matches will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS in Australia throughout the 17-week season including the ANZ Championship Finals Series which concludes at the end of June. Additionally in Australia one match per week will be simulcast live from 12.00pm each Sunday on free-to-air television via SBS 2, with the Swifts to be featured five times.

In addition to the Oceania Cup, Mo’onia regularly gives her time to clubs, schools and community groups throughout the State, talking to them about diversity, nutrition and how to deal with bullies. “I was shocked to hear the news that I was a Finalist but extremely honoured to have received such an acknowledgement,” said Gerrard.

Caitlin also enjoyed an impressive International series against the New Zealand Silver Ferns and Malawi Queens, shooting 86 goals at 93 per cent accuracy in just three appearances for the Green & Gold – including a massive 41 goals from 42 attempts in one half against the Queens in Wollongong! Join us in congratulating Caitlin on her personal milestone – we look forward to seeing her in the shooting circle for the NSW Swifts!

WATCH THE SWIFTS ON THE ROAD In 2014 fans will be able to watch all NSW Swifts’ ANZ Championship games LIVE on television via FOX SPORTS.

In its inaugural year 25 teams participated, and in 2013 the event grew in both size and popularity with over 30 teams taking part.

Kimberlee Green The importance of her team at home No one epitomises the family values of the NSW Swifts more than Captain Kimberlee Green. Her life is very much family orientated. Parents Michael, who played rugby league with South Sydney reserves, and Denyse are an inspiration and she speaks fondly of the career achievements of her three siblings. Kim mentions she is proud of her mum. She need not bother as the enthusiasm in her voice reveals her fondness for her parents and the role they have had in moulding her into the person she is.

“That is the way it is at home. It does not matter how many trophies or medals or awards – it is about doing your best and being a great person off court or away from the pool. That is more important than the awards you win and that is something mum and dad always taught us. “Mum treasures all my stuff but it is in a little room out the back and no one will ever see it. It is not something we want to be known for. We want to be known for being good people and people want to hang around because we are nice and not because of the trophies.’’

Michael and Denyse just wanted their kids to be respected people and they have never wavered in their support. The family are all Members of the Swifts and are in the stands when Kim takes to the court. Husband and cricketer Trent Copeland is also a face in the crowd. “They have been Members for years,’’ Kim said.

Despite being one of the most decorated netballers in the nation, Kim’s family home hides her achievements. Denyse was an Olympic swimmer and multi Commonwealth Games gold medallist, yet the home is devoid of evidence.

Kim never had the pleasure of watching her mum race in the pool. However, she speaks of the testing times her mum confronted in her career and Kim’s admiration is obvious.

In fact, Denyse is quite embarrassed when people talk about her career, according to Kim.

Denyse was raised in a Redfern housing estate in Sydney, when money was far from plentiful.

“We don’t talk about the trophies, the medals,’’ Kim said. ‘’There are zero trophies in our house and not many sporting photos around.

“Mum grew up in a really hard time,’’ Kim said.

“You will never get mum to talk about the medals she has won or anything like that. She will tell us funny stories she had along the way but never sit down and say ‘these are my medals’.

Kim’s parents never forced their children to be involved in sport. They were given opportunities to play “every sport under the sun’’ and it was up to the kids what direction they took.

“She found it hard to get to training. I would never have been able to get where I am if that was me. It is inspirational to see how much her love of sport was able to keep pushing her. It is cool to see where she has come from and how far she went.’’

“Trent goes all the time – he loves it and knows more about netball than I do. He comes from a big family and they are supportive of me. “Netball in general is a family sport and the Swifts do a great job of including everyone. The Swifts are very good at keeping fans up to date with what we are doing,’’ concluded Kim. Warren Partland

The last time the two teams met the Fever were convincing 20-point winners over the Swifts in Perth in Round 5 of the 2013 ANZ Championship. The Fever burst out of the blocks in front of their home crowd, setting up a 20-goal advantage at halftime. West Coast upped the ante again in the third quarter off the back of some tremendous defence which pulled in five intercepts. The Swifts rallied to win the final quarter but the margin was too great to make up, the Fever recording their best result against the Swifts in the ANZ Championship with their 71-goal tally.

“The West Coast Fever have world-class players across the court. For me the one to watch is Nat Medhurst. Medhurst is an extremely clever GA who does a mountain of work in both attack and defence. Nat’s feeding ability, as well as her shooting, makes her a dominant player on court and we will need to pay close attention to her throughout the match.”

Your Third GOAL SHOOTING For our first edition of ‘Your Third’ we go in-depth with Specialist Shooting Coach Megan Anderson about some of the tactics the NSW Swifts’ shooting end will take into today’s on-court stoush with the West Coast Fever… Firstly, I’m really excited that we are finally here – our first game of the 2014 ANZ Championship! During our Pre-Season preparations we have done a lot of work on our combinations and today we will see those strategies into practice.

The relationship between players on-court is imperative to coming away with a win and none more so than within the shooting circle. We’ve been working hard on our shooting combinations and linking with the midcourters, as well as adjusting to the difference styles of defence. We will need to play smart and use our skills to get the ball moving; not getting caught up trying to outrun our opposition. Our shooting accuracy is something we want to improve on this year, so we’re looking to see that lift for today’s game. However just as important is gaining any rebounds, as a few missed shots and defensive rebounds can quickly see a side fall away on the scoreboard.

defensive team with her enthusiasm and ‘never say die’ attitude; if she plays well, the whole team does. Eboni is very good at rebounding and putting on first-ball pressure, and covers a lot of space in the goal circle. NSW junior Ashleigh Brazill also is someone to watch. She’s incredibly explosive– she reads the play well and can easily take five to six intercepts in a game. The key to winning is delivering the ball safely to the shooters in the circle, so the midcourters will have to watch out for ‘Braz’s’ closing in speed so she doesn’t cut off the pass.

The West Coast Fever is a very strong outfit, but there are two key players we are wary of. Goal Keeper Eboni Beckford-Chambers is in career best form and seems to inspire the rest of Fever’s

Rob Wright Building for the future Rob Wright will today continue his history-making run as the first male Head Coach of an ANZ Championship franchise as he steps out onto court for Round 1. And although Wright describes the honour as “very cool”, it’s his extensive coaching resume and drive to deliver sustained success which saw him rewarded with his dream job.

team, our medical and psychological physicians, to our physiotherapists who are on hand for the players whenever required,” Wright said. “It’s important to recognise that 95 per cent of our week isn’t playing – it’s training and preparing for the match ahead. Therefore the behind-the-scenes staff are critical to our on-court success.”

But it isn’t just Wright who is making his debut today. Wright leads a team of expert support staff who are working together to develop the best athletes and team to represent the NSW Swifts. From specialist coaches to nutrition and career advice, the NSW Swifts have a team of respected industry professionals on hand to assist in creating the best netballers for the Club, both now and for the future. Wright said it was a conscious decision in order for Netball NSW to follow through with their promise of creating a ‘Diamond Mine’. “In my opinion, no individual has all the answers. The support network we have assembled at the NSW Swifts is the modern way of coaching – tapping into people who have real expertise in critical areas, and optimising those resources,” Wright said. After confirmation of his promotion, Wright set about mimicking and then adapting the template of successful teams from other sporting codes – such as AFL, Cricket and Rugby – to build his dream support team, which would put the Club in the best position possible to achieve the ultimate goal; taking home the ANZ Championship Trophy. “The support team we have built are well respected in their fields – from the strength and conditioning

Joining Wright on the bench this season is Megan Anderson and Anita Keelan; two highly respected and knowledgeable netball brains whose services the Head Coach is extremely excited to have acquired. “Having both Anita and Megan on the bench is fantastic; both know the game inside and out, and having the three of us on the bench is great, as I always say more heads are better than one,” Wright said. “Anita has a great tactical brain, which is a critical element in this game. She comes with plenty of experience and complements both Megan [Anderson] and I. She also has extensive knowledge across the court so can interchange and bring ideas to all thirds. “Megan is a bit similar to me; she’s very observant and doesn’t say much, but when she does, people respect that. She also comes to us with real experience, having played the contemporary game both in Australia and New Zealand, which is an invaluable resource. She received great wraps from the Northern Mystics and from our time together I can see why – she’s a great coach,” Wright said. Along with the bench coaches, two contracted specialist coaches will be brought in once a week to work with the team on specific tactics and strategies. Previous NSW Swifts’ co-captain Mo’onia Gerrard and

2014 NSW 21/U Head Coach Megan Simpson have been brought into the fold as Specialist Defensive and Midcourt coaches, respectively, to work with individuals and combinations during training. “The unique part of their [Mon & Megan] weekly session – along with Megan Anderson with her expertise in Shooting – is the players decide what they want to work on strategically, whether it is oneon-one or within a group. And despite being assigned to a third, that doesn’t limit the players working within their positions; for example, the shooters can work with Mon on their footwork, or the midcourters on centre pass tactics,” Wright said With the extra resources behind the scenes, fans would be forgiven that Wright’s load as Head Coach is somewhat lighter. But the ‘Man of the House’ couldn’t disagree more saying the responsibility of leading the team is even greater. “By growing our support team there are more people to manage, with the responsibility sitting squarely on my shoulders. The Pre-Season has definitely been an exercise in people management, however the team we have in place are fantastic,” Wright said. “We recruited our playing roster with the notion of ‘Great Person, Great Player’ and the same characteristics apply with our support staff. “At the end of the day we are building a team – both on and off the court – not just for today, but for the long term future. I’m extremely honoured to lead this team and excited about starting our season proper.” Victoria Bain

A trip down memory lane with…

Selina Hornibrook (nee Gilsenan) In each edition of Swifts Insider in 2014, we will be honouring past Swifts Club players by catching up with a former NSW representative from the NSW Swifts and/ or from the NSW teams in the former national league – Hunter Jaegars, Sydney Sandpipers and Sydney Swifts. Dynamic midcourter Selina Hornibrook (nee Gilsenan), played for the Sydney Swifts for nine years in the former national league, claiming four premierships (2001, 2004, 2006-2007) including a Grand Final MVP nod in 2007. After winning a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and claiming the crown at the 2007 World Championships she retired from international duties but played one more year of netball… helping the NSW Swifts claim the inaugural ANZ Championship title in 2008.

1. How did you get started in netball?

I first started netball because I wanted to play a team sport, I think I was 11 at that time. I did other sports like swimming and dance but I wanted to play a team

sport and all my girlfriends at school played netball so it was the obvious choice.

2. Which player did you most admire and why?

When I was younger, probably Kath Harby-Williams, she was in the Australian team at the time and was in the position I played which was goal defence. As I got older I admired Liz Ellis (she’ll love that!), just because she was such an inspirational captain, a great person to have on the team and obviously she achieved everything you can possibly achieve in netball.

3. What do you remember of your National League debut?

It took me a while to get off the bench for starters, so what I remember is being excited to get into the Swifts but I think it was at least a year before I actually got my first real experience. I think it was overwhelming at first in that first game, overwhelming to be on court but I settled in not long after that.

4. What was the highlight of your netball career?

The first highlight was being selected in my first Australian squad; that was my first highlight in netball because more than anything it was unexpected. The next highlight was probably my last year with the Swifts, my last year playing – winning the first ANZ Championship.

5. What is one thing you miss about netball and one thing you don’t?

One thing I miss is definitely the lifestyle of playing netball, being around girlfriends all the time, travelling, the whole lifestyle and everything involved with that, and what I don’t miss… the beep test! I could do preseason training but I did hate the beep test.

Have you ever come to a Crossroad in your life when you have to make a decision which could impact the rest of your life? During the 2014 ANZ Championship, Swifts Insider will be sitting down with members of the 2014 Swifts’ roster to find their Crossroad Moment and how it’s impacted their netball journey.

HORSES V NETBALL WITH SHARNI LAYTON WHAT WAS YOUR CROSSROAD?

In 2007 I was at the Australian Institute of Sport for netball and riding horses. I had to choose whether to continue my netball or focus on an equestrian career.

WHAT WAS THE CRUNCH POINT?

I didn’t have the time to succeed at both, which meant I was doing both half heartedly. I knew if I wanted to succeed I would have to make a decision – as painful as it was. Although horses were my true love at the time, I knew I could always return to riding but this was my only chance to make it in netball.

THE DECISION AND HOW IT’S HELPED YOU TODAY?

By taking responsibility and choosing netball, I learnt that hard decisions have to be made to reach my goals. By making the sacrifice of giving up riding, it drove me to succeed at netball.

PROS & CONS AROUND WHAT MADE THIS DECISION? PROS CONS HORSES • •

I loved horses I could ride them later in life

• •

Cost a lot of time and money Less opportunity to represent at Australian Level

NETBALL • • •

I could travel for netball • Had the opportunity to represent my country at 21/U level I enjoyed the sport and team environment

If I gave up netball now, I would be giving up my dream of playing World Youth Cup

I decided that I had to give netball a go whilst I could, as I could always go back to Equestrian later in life. The end goal was to represent my country. I never believed I could make it in netball, which is why I kept riding. Once I gave myself the belief and focus, I reached my goals.

THE IMPACT OF THAT DECISION.

As much as I miss riding, it reduced the amount of stress in my life. I was able to commit more to my netball; therefore I improved out of sight and started loving it more than ever. It has given me the opportunity to play in the ANZ Championship and to represent my country, which is all I ever dreamed of as a kid. Thanks to that decision, I am now playing with the NSW Swifts & Australian Diamonds!
