Welcome It’s great to be back home at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre (SOPSC) with a Bye separating back-toback away games for the NSW Swifts. Today we will need all our supporters in full voice as we take on the New Zealand Conference leaders and supertalented Northern Mystics.

our first win in front of home fans of the 2015 season this Sunday!

We’re going to need to bring our ‘A-Game’ again today; our opposition have nine former and current international representatives, showcasing the depth the Mystics have in their roster, whilst they’re also coming off an impressive win against the Central Pulse last round.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 18 athletes selected into the wider Australian Diamonds squad announced last Wednesday, who will be vying for a spot in the final 12 to compete at the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.

The last time we met our Kiwi rivals was in the final round of last year’s ANZ Championship, when the Mystics finished three-goal victors in front of their home fans at Trusts Arena. That being said, with thanks to our amazing Members and fans, the Swifts have the upper hand on our home court winning three from four past meetings with the Mystics at SOPSC – including the last time we hosted the Mystics in Round 10, 2013, with a 19-goal victory (63-44). We’ll be looking to continue that trend today and, more importantly, improve on our disappointing loss to the Adelaide Thunderbirds last weekend at Netball SA Stadium. What better way to turn our season’s fortunes around by celebrating

It’s always exciting to play the Thunderbirds at home; the parochial Adelaide crowd is always in full voice which is such a strong motivator for the home side. The Swifts players describe the feeling like coming up against an eighth player, so we’ll be calling on our own fans to create that atmosphere today for the Mystics.

And finally I’d like to say good luck to the athletes contesting the 2015 17/U and 19/U National Netball Championships Finals Series, being played next door at Netball Central. I’ve had the pleasure of catching some of the action this week and it’s exciting to see Australia’s bright young talent on display, and who knows - perhaps an early look at the next crop of Diamonds to contest the 2019 Netball World Championships in Liverpool, England. Go Swifts!

Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER The countdown is on until the NSW Swifts host arguably the Club’s biggest fixture of the season, our Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER, on Sunday 3 May when we take on the defending Champions Melbourne Vixens. Today marks just two weeks until the Swifts meet the Vixens for the first time this season; meaning it will be the first of a two-match

contest for the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup and the next chapter in the NSW v VIC rivalry. Tickets are still available for this BLOCKBUSTER game that is sure to be Beyond Expectation. For more information on this Swifts’ season highlight, turn to Page 14.

Kimberlee Green

Celebrating 100 ANZ Championship games

In her own words, when Kimberlee Green started her elite netball career as a yellow Swift she was a “young player, who was very raw”. Thirteen seasons later and now in the NSW Swifts’ Red, the 29-year-old is one of the world’s best netballers. During last Sunday’s Round 7 encounter at Adelaide’s Netball SA Stadium, Kim notched up a century of ANZ Championship appearances for the NSW Swifts, becoming only the second player in the Club’s history to do so. When you think of the Swifts, you think Kimberlee Green. For many she is the embodiment of what it means to represent this great Club; something the Sutherland Shire junior is incredibly proud of. “I guess for me I don’t know anything different than being a Swift. Just the history of the Swifts and being able to be part of the Club for so many years has been pretty incredible,” Green expressed. “When I first started out, I never thought I would get a contract past my first year, so to reach 100 ANZ Championship games is something very special.” Since the formation of the League in 2008, the tenacious midcourter has only missed three games for the Swifts, racking up an achievement list the envy of most athletes, including the 2008 ANZ Championship Premiership, twice the QBE NSW Swifts’ Most Valued Player (2013-2014), 2014 FOXTEL ANZ Championship All-Star Team and 2014 ANZ Championship joint-MVP. During this time Kim has been a constant member of the Australian Diamonds, claiming gold at both the 2011 World Championships and 2014 Commonwealth Games and was

rewarded for her efforts by being named the Diamonds’ Vice Captain earlier this year.

further reminder of the rapport Kim has with fans – a relationship which she cherishes.

Most sportspeople are able to recall their favourite moment during a period of their career, but for Kim there is a multitude of memories which define her enjoyment for the sport over the past eight seasons.

“The fans are the reason why I play netball. All the memories and all the fun that you have, that’s great, but when you’re talking about playing netball, the fans are the first thing that comes to mind.

“It’s a collection of moments and a lot of them are not about winning, they’re more the fun times you have being part of netball,” explained Kim.

“I love going to the games and seeing all the young inspiring netballers, whether it be girls or boys, that’s just super inspiring. One of my favourite parts of being with the Swifts is finishing the game and going up to all those people who have come so far to watch us and getting the chance to interact with them.”

“Whether it has been on tour or having coffee dates with the girls – they’re the sort of moments that really stick out for me. “Of course the winning does help, but when I look back over the years my favourite moments involve the friends I’ve made through netball, and that is what I love about team sport.” Kim is quick to acknowledge that her success as a netballer would not have been possible without the support of the many who have shared her Swifts’ journey. “The support I have received throughout my netball career at the Swifts has been absolutely tremendous. Not just the support, but the belief people have put in me over the years,” conveyed Kim, who has captained the Club for the past four seasons.

While Kim can’t speak highly enough of the wider Swifts Family, it’s the backing and sacrifice of her own family which has formed the foundation for her longevity in the sport. “My family have been super supportive of me. My mum and my dad, my sisters and brother, and of course my husband, are everything to me and so understanding about what I need to be the best I can be. My 100 game milestone is as much theirs, as it is mine,” concluded Kim. Join us in congratulating Kimberlee on reaching 100 ANZ Championship games! Rebecca Trbojevich

“Not everyone gets that opportunity, but I’m extremely grateful to have such a supportive group around me and that extends off the court to Netball NSW, led by [Chief Executive Officer] Carolyn Campbell, who has been a big part of my development as a player and person.” A four-time recipient of the Club’s Members’ Player of the Year award, the honour is just a INSIDER

HIGH TEA WITH A TWIST

NSW Swifts’ Jade Clarke and Sharni Layton visited the SCG recently to catch our Big Brothers, the Sydney Swans, in action on the training track… and thought they’d try their hand at taking a ‘hanger’ themselves.

Amongst sharing their favourite players, knowing the rules, and their score predictions – Sharni, Jade and Gary also gave their thoughts on which rule they thought could be swapped into the other code.

It was a NSW Swifts High Tea with a twist for Members, fans and partners on Tuesday 7 April at Netball Central. Swifts defender Sharni Layton took to the mic as Master of Ceremonies to lead guests through a ‘garden’ party of fun and games.

NSWSwiftsTV was on hand to catch all the action, plus catch up with ‘Mr Netball’ himself – Gary Rohan.

Caitlin Thwaites

100 ANZ Championship Games

Like a chameleon, Caitlin Thwaites has embraced change throughout her 10-plus year netball career. Starting as a 15-year-old in her home state of Victoria, Caitlin has moved cities and countries all with one goal in mind – Australian international honours. After what the now 28-year-old describes as a “hard and somewhat difficult road” along the way, today Caitlin will celebrate a personal achievement should she take the court against the Northern Mystics, marking 100 ANZ Championship appearances. “It’s pretty awesome to reach 100 games, but it’s definitely making me feel old,” Caitlin laughed. “It has been a real journey for me; it hasn’t just happened. I haven’t been given the easy route, I’ve had to work really hard – I’ve changed clubs a few times, I’ve had my own adversities I’ve had to overcome, and I’ve had to reassess my goals across the seasons. “I’ve had to be brave and carve out my own pathway, and I guess looking back now I’ve reached this personal milestone, I’m quite proud of myself,” Caitlin admitted. Beginning her career as a fresh-faced teenager in the former elite national netball league, Caitlin was retained by her home team as a member of the Melbourne Vixens for the inaugural ANZ Championship season in 2008; there she would spend three seasons playing alongside netball great, Sharelle McMahon, and was a member of the 2009 ANZ Championship-winning side. However, after a disappointing 2010 season for the Vixens, Caitlin found herself shopping around for a new home – looking for courttime after facing the real possibility of sitting on the bench.

10

INSIDER

“I was faced with a tough decision [at the end of the 2010 season] and I knew that to [realise my dream of playing for] Australia, I needed to be out on court. So I began to look at other teams and their shooting options,” Caitlin recalled. This lead to Caitlin becoming one of the first Australians to move “across the ditch” when she joined the Central Pulse as their import player for three seasons (2011-2013). “The other Australian sides all had pretty established shooting combinations, so I assumed that if I stayed in Australia I would be sitting on the bench. So I looked to New Zealand,” Caitlin explained. “At the time I wasn’t sure whether I would be considered for Diamonds selection if I was playing for a Kiwi side, but I thought it was better to be on court showing what I could do, than waiting for my turn on the bench. “I think it just reiterated my passion, that I just wanted to be out there playing the game that I loved.” Luckily for Diamonds fans, Australian Selectors didn’t cast Caitlin into the wilderness with the Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist having now made 10 appearances at an international level. It was Caitlin’s determination to cement a regular spot in the Diamonds’ line-up, as well as return to the familiarity of Aussie soil, that saw the 188cm shooter join the NSW Swifts last season and establish a formidable combination with fellow international Susan Pettitt (nee Pratley) over the last two seasons – a shooting partnership Caitlin declares she is very much enjoying. Now having the opportunity to look back on her 99 previous ANZ Championship games,

Caitlin admits whilst she didn’t know what her career would look like as a 15-year-old… she certainly couldn’t have guessed the way it’s panned out. “I don’t think I’d really gauged then what my career ahead would look like – I just thought it was incredible what I was doing and having the opportunity to play netball. But I didn’t really imagine what my career would be,” Caitlin said. “Netball has turned out to be such a massive part of my life. I’ve been so lucky to see the game grow around me to what the ANZ Championship is now – how big the fan base has become, the level of skill the sport has grown to, and just the game itself. “I’m really enjoying my netball. I love being a part of the Swifts; we’ve got a great team of players and coaches, amazing Members and fans, and really happy to share this personal achievement with the Club and our wonderful fan base,” Caitlin concluded. Congratulations Caitlin Thwaites on your milestone. Victoria Bain
