Welcome Before the season began, I commented in an interview that I believed the introduction of the draw for 2015 would be the difference between a team making or missing the Finals Series. Unfortunately for the Swifts, we’ve had three draws in eight games, which means our own Finals Series begins today, and against the defending champions the Melbourne Vixens. As a coach, you always want to have control of your own destiny, and for the Swifts to secure a Finals Berth on our own terms we have to win four of our remaining five regular season games. This is a challenge, but a test which the team is excited about and certainly capable of achieving. Any game featuring teams from both NSW and Victoria – the sport’s traditional domestic rivals – is a highly-anticipated affair no matter the circumstance. In the first seven seasons of the ANZ Championship, the two teams have met fourteen times, with the winning margin being less than ten goals on nine occasions; further reflecting the competition within a competition whenever sides from these two states meet. The Melbourne Vixens were dominant last season and thoroughly deserving of the Premiership. And while they have recently lost influential midcourter Madi Robinson for the season through injury, their depth shone through in claiming victory over the Steel

last Sunday. For the reasons already stated, and against such quality opposition, there is no margin for error on our part today and we will need to put in a complete four quarter performance to claim the win. There is perhaps no better stage for this rivalry to continue, than in front of what could be another record-breaking crowd at our annual Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER. Last year, the roar of support we physically felt, not just heard, from the 10,118 strong crowd still lives with every member of the team who experienced it. In NSW, we pride ourselves on being the most passionate sports’ fans in the land, and I would ask every Swifts’ supporter here today to help make Allphones Arena our cauldron once again; from the minute the team enters for the warm-up until the final whistle blows. On behalf of the NSW Swifts, I’d like to welcome Melbourne Vixens’ head coach Simone McKinnis OAM, her team, plus their supporters to the magnificent Allphones Arena for what will be a Netball BLOCKBUSTER to remember.

Julie Corletto

Netball’s ultimate professional

She has long been admired by netball enthusiasts as a world-class defender with an infectious smile, but to her teammates, Julie Corletto is also acknowledged as the ultimate professional whose determination knows no bounds. Since discovering netball as a junior, Julie’s journey to the top has been a ride of exhilarating highs and career threatening lows, but for the girl from Kerang in country Victoria, her motivation to come back from adversity is underpinned by her unwavering love of netball. Growing up in a sporty family with two older siblings, Julie parents – Gayle and John – succumb to the ever increasing “trips to the city” for their children’s sporting commitments; moving to Doncaster in suburban Melbourne when Julie was 10 years of age. However, Julie’s path to netball stardom got off to a false start. “It’s interesting, the first netball club that my sister [Karen] and I tried out for when we moved up to Melbourne, we didn’t get selected in, so we thought ‘oh no, we must be really bad’, so we went to another Association… and they chose us in one of their clubs and one of the teams,” recalled Julie. Netball wasn’t the only sport Julie enjoyed, she participated in athletes, swimming and basketball, but thankfully for Australian Netball others spotted her potential from an early age. “I had lots of fun and pretty much played Saturday netball like a lot of young girls do, and then I got selected in a rep team to play tournaments. From there I was talent identified, tried out for State Teams, and then was fortunate to get a scholarship with VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport).” Julie’s netball career to date has been lined with success, including an ANZ Championship Premiership (2009, Melbourne Vixens); two World Championship titles (2007 and 2011); and Commonwealth Games Gold in 2014. But that

may not have been possible if she hadn’t caught the eye of Joyce Brown, who gave Julie her first insight into elite netball during 2001.

that you don’t like to hear, but to me, that gives me motivation to do everything I possibly can to do it,” stated Julie.

“Joyce Brown was the coach of the [Melbourne] Phoenix at the time, and she put together a development squad of around eight younger players who were to train with the senior team once a month, as it happens, it ended up being every fortnight.”

“Back in 2010 I was told I might not be able to play netball again, particularly at this level, because of the surgery I had on my knee. I was really diligent with what the physios told me to do and did absolutely everything asked of me.

“I was only 15 at the time and still at school, and I remember just learning so much from training with the older girls and I just idealised them,” reminisced Julie, who went onto make her Commonwealth Bank Trophy debut for the Phoenix in 2002. Growing up in a sporting family, where both her sister (netball) and brother, Ian (AFL), enjoyed successful sporting careers, Julie was surrounded by mentors. Although it was her fellow Phoenix teammate and Australian Diamond, Liz Boniello, who made a lasting impression on Julie’s career. “I learnt so much from Liz, not just on the court but off the court as well. Just the way she was super organised and I think she achieved so much in her life because of that,” explained Julie. “I do write lots of lists, I think if you write things down and get things done, then you achieve things. For example with sport, you write down your goals and work your backside off to do everything you can to achieve those goals.” While Julie has a list of sporting achievements the envy of most athletes, she has also sustained a number of injuries many peers may not have returned from. A fractured foot, a serious ankle injury, and double knee surgery are just a few of the challenges this tenacious 28-year-old has overcome.

“If I did that, and couldn’t get back and play, I guess I had to accept that and know I gave it a good crack. But I think I’d be more angry at myself if I didn’t do everything right along the way and questioning why I wasn’t playing,” explained Julie, who successfully returned to claim a Gold Medal at the 2011 World Championships. For Julie, doing everything she can to be successful means a weekly routine of off-court activities to support her outstanding on-court performances. “Each week I do pilates and yoga, I get lots of soft tissue treatments, and there’s lots of icing on my knees. There are some different icing techniques that I do to ensure I get up for each game.” It’s a daily obligation which Julie has followed for almost five years, where no shortcuts are accepted, and a commitment which many close to her often ask “why do you do it?”, her response is quite simple, “I love the game”. During today’s Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER, Julie lines up against the team she once played for, the Melbourne Vixens. But there will be no time for sentimentality as far as Julie is concerned, just a steely determination to do everything she can to help the NSW Swifts claim theirs, and hers, second ANZ Championship crown. NSW Swifts’ captain and midcourter Kimberlee Green, defenders Julie Corletto and Sharni Layton, plus shooter Caitlin Thwaites are all one step closer to representing Australia at a home World Cup, when Sydney hosts the event for the first time in 24 years from 7-16 August. These four athletes were members of the Australian Diamonds team who went through 2014 undefeated,

and were also part of the Australian Netball Team who won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “I’m delighted for the girls. They have shown themselves to be outstanding players on both the domestic and international stage over the past 12-18 months and their selection in what is a high-quality Diamonds squad is reward for their performances,” said NSW Swifts’ head coach Rob Wright. The 12-player Australian Diamonds team to contest the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 will be named following the conclusion of the ANZ Championship season.

The NSW Swifts will host its official TKCP charity game during the Club’s Round 11 home game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds next Sunday, 10 May 2015. We are asking fans to come dressed with “crazy hair” and or “crazy socks” to join in the fun, plus help raise important funds through bucket collections on the day.

History of the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup

Melbourne Vixens’ head coach Simone McKinnis OAM with Anne Sargeant OAM whom the Cup is named after

Sargeant-McKinnis Cup ANZ Championship History:

When the NSW Swifts host the Melbourne Vixens in today’s Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER, the winner of this Round 10 contest will get one hand on the SargeantMcKinnis Cup for 2015.

2014 Results Round 7: Swifts 50 def by Vixens 56 Round 10: Swifts 54 def Vixens 50

The Cup is named after two of netball’s most accomplished players: NSW’s Anne Sargeant OAM and Victoria’s Simone McKinnis OAM, now Vixens’ Head Coach, and is awarded each year based on the results of the two home and away matches played between the NSW Swifts and Melbourne Vixens each ANZ Championship season. History will be on the side of the visitors today as the Vixens have won the first match between the two teams in five of seven ANZ Championship seasons to date, including last year, when they came from behind to defeat the Swifts, 56-50, at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

2013 Results Round 8: Swifts 42 def by Vixens 50 Round 12: Swifts 48 def Vixens 39 2012 Results Rd 7: Swifts 55 def Vixens 52 Rd 9: Swifts 49 def Vixens 43 2011 Results Rd 3: Swifts 45 def by Vixens 49 Rd 12: Swifts 45 def Vixens 33 2010 NSW Swifts’ Captain Catherine Cox

2009 Results Rd 8: Swifts 63 def by Vixens 65 (ET) Rd 11: Swifts 52 def by Vixens 63

Despite that statistic, the NSW Swifts have claimed the Cup five times to the Vixens’ two, with the latter the current holders by virtue of a slim 2-goal differential in their favour after the games were split one a piece in 2014.

2008 Results Rd 5: Swifts 52 def by Vixens 53 Rd 13: Swifts 62 def Vixens 49

Three times a team has made a clean-sweep of the series; the Vixens did it in their Premiership season of 2009 whilst the Swifts answered back in 2010, undefeated in the regular season, as well as 2012. While today’s two teams will be desperate for the win to keep their 2015 ANZ Championship ambitions on track, both also know just how important the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup is to their respective fans and provides the winner with bragging points until they meet again in Round 13 at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena.

2010 Results Rd 7: Swifts 56 def Vixens 42 Rd 13: Swifts 58 def Vixens 46

Prior to 2008 the NSW and Victorian teams in the former national league competed for the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup; Sydney Swifts, Hunter Jaegers, Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Kestrels, with NSW claiming the Cup from 2004-2006 and Victoria taking home the Cup in the final year of the competition, 2007.

Homemade Veggie Pizza SERVES: 1 medium-sized pizza

PREP: 10mins

COOKING TIME: 40mins

TOTAL TIME: 50mins

Rookie shooter Stephanie Wood admits she isn’t a wizard in the kitchen, but is proud of her homemade pizza. There is no right or wrong way to make this pizza, with the amount of toppings down to personal choice. However, it’s important to go easy on the cheese and heavy on the veggies!

Ingredients • Pre-made Pizza Base or Pita Bread • Tomato Paste (tin, jar, tube – whatever you prefer) • Large handful of Baby Spinach Leaves • 3 x good-sized mushrooms thinly sliced • 250g pumpkin, deseeded, peeled, cut into 1-2cm cubes • 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil or Olive Oil Spray • Pine Nuts (amount based upon your taste) • (Grated) Light and Tasty Cheese • (Crumbled) Feta Cheese (to taste) • 1 x avocado (to be sliced)

Method • Preheat Oven to 200 degrees celsius • Cut pumpkin into small cubes. • Place the pumpkin on a lined baking tray. Drizzle or Stray with Olive Oil. Season with salt and pepper if you wish. Toss to combine. Roast for 25 minutes or until tender. • Once the pumpkin is cooked, spread the tomato paste on the Pizza Base/Pita Bread and then evenly layer the spinach leaves, sliced mushrooms, cooked pumpkin and pine nuts on the base. • Sprinkle the grated light and tasty cheese over the top of the above ingredients, and then place the crumbled Feta cheese evenly over the grated cheese (remembering the amount of cheese is based upon your taste but less is more! ☺). • Cook for a further 15 minutes or until the cheese has melted. • Once cooked, add the sliced avocado over the top and enjoy!!

Celebrity Supporter Chris Bath and Jim Wilson

Qu: You’re not just a champion of the Swifts, but the ANZ Championship and the Diamonds. Where does this support of netball stem from? An: My sisters played netball at school, as did my wife Chris. I’ve always admired it as a gruelling and highly-skilled sport and I also believe they deserve the recognition as it’s a very successful sport. Qu: Swifts Insider has heard you’re rather fond of your NSW Swifts’ supporter cap and never take it off? Is this true? An: The best cap in my collection and it goes everywhere with me around the world! The NSW Swifts are blessed to have THE BEST Members and supporters in the ANZ Championship, two such super fans are husband and wife duo, Chris Bath and Jim Wilson from Channel Seven. Swifts Insider recently caught up with both Chris and Jim at Channel Seven’s Martin Place Headquarters to get an insight into their love of netball and the NSW Swifts. Chris Bath Qu: What did you enjoy about playing netball? An: I loved that anyone, even dud athletes like me, could learn how to play and I always enjoyed the teamwork involved. Qu: How frustrating or entertaining is watching sport in the Bath-Wilson household? An: It’s a household of at least three sport obsessed males, so I have very little control of the remote! I have managed to hammer into them though, that netball is a bigger participation sport in Australia than cricket or

any football code – resulting in Jim’s Swifts’ Cap wearing enthusiasm!!!! Qu: Does Jim ever fancy himself as a netballer? An: Jim sees himself as a netball all-rounder but primarily as the world’s first 6’5”, 100kg centre... just ask him!

Qu: Who is your favourite current NSW Swifts’ player and why? An: I like all the players and they’re so generous with their time and are superb athletes.

Qu: Who is your favourite current NSW Swifts’ player and why? An: Too hard and controversial to choose just one as I truly believe every team member is a specialist in their position, bringing different skills and athletic expertise to the table. I love them all! Jim Wilson Qu: You’ve said the NSW Swifts are more than just a team, what is it about the Club you admire? An: I like the culture and the fact it operates on the smell of an oily rag when compared to other codes in town. Successful and passionate for the game, and the players and coaching staff are there for the right reasons.
