Welcome Before I welcome everyone to today’s exciting contest against the Adelaide Thunderbirds, I’d like to thank all 10,370 Swifts Members and supporters who packed Allphones Arena for our BLOCKBUSTER game last weekend.
That said, after a disappointing loss to our South Australian counterparts in Round 7, we won’t be looking to farewell Jane in a positive manner today. The team were extremely unsatisfied with a seven-goal defeat the last time we met the Thunderbirds, and we will be looking to reverse that result today when we take the court in front of our home crowd.
I said it at the time, but what an amazing experience it was to play in front of that atmosphere. The noise, the colour, the electricity… it truly was a highlight of the season. So thank you to everyone who came to support the Swifts against last year’s Champions, the Melbourne Vixens, and for joining us again today when we take on another Australian rival.
Finally, I would like to wish my mum Jeanette sitting in the crowd today, all the Mums who join her in the stands, and those in our NSW netball community a very Happy Mother’s Day. You all do a wonderful job but today is your day to sit back and get spoilt.
It will be the last time we take on a Jane Woodlands-Thompson-led Thunderbirds outfit, with the foundation coach announcing she will be stepping down from her role at season’s end. On behalf of the NSW Swifts I’d like to congratulate Jane on an impressive eight-year career, and wish her all the best for her future endeavours.
Here’s hoping we can make it even more special with a Swifts win.

Layton’s holistic view on life
“True happiness is pushing myself… the rewards you reap make everything worthwhile” Young budding athletes could learn a lot from the vivacious Sharni Layton. At 27 years old the boisterous defender has ticked off many goals in her career so far; a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal (2014), a Netball World Championship Gold Medal (2011), winning not one but two ANZ Championship Premierships (2010 & 2013), plus being named the inaugural Best Young Talent for the 2010 season. But it isn’t her netball achievements or skills that athletes could learn the most from… although we can’t deny, they would certainly help! Currently in the process of finishing her Life Coaching studies, Sharni has a real passion for helping others. Which is why when Swifts Insider approached the team’s co-Vice Captain about this feature, Sharni jumped at the chance to share her story of moving to NSW. “When I first moved here I didn’t know what to expect. I remember Mo’onia [Gerrard] driving me and [my partner] Nick over the Harbour Bridge and thinking ‘How on earth can we live here?” Sharni admitted. Eighteen months down the track, Sharni says moving to Sydney has been the best decision she has made. “I really love Adelaide – it’s a beautiful place – but I felt in my life off the court that I was at a crossroads. I couldn’t really see myself branching out any more, and so started to think about how I could challenge myself,” Sharni recalled. “It was really daunting, the initial move to Sydney – I was expecting this big urban jungle, full of hustle and bustle. But I’ve been really pleasantly surprised.
“Where I live there’s lots of greenery… I remember one of the first things I did here was the infamous Bay Run [near the Iron Cove Bridge in Sydney’s Drummoyne] and I thought, ‘wow, I could be in the country right now!’ it’s just so beautiful,” Sharni declared. While the defender admits to loving netball, she’s very cautious to not let it consume her daily life. “I have a really holistic view on life – I love netball, but I don’t want it to define who I am,” Sharni said.
“The support I’ve received from day dot has just been incredible – Swifts’ fans have welcomed me with open arms, made me feel like one of the family, and have just made this move so much easier,” Sharni expressed. “Netball is well-supported in Adelaide, so I wasn’t sure what to expect once I moved. But I would have to say the support we have here is better. The community is amazing – and not just at our Allphones Arena BLOCKBUSTER – but across the whole year.
“That’s why I put a lot of effort into other activities – whether it be study, family, friends, life coaching… if netball is all I am, then I’d very quickly get sick of it.”
“Whether it be at clinics, at games, at our Club events… I love meeting our fans and get such a buzz every time they cheer us on court. I’m an attention-seeker really and love to rise to an occasion, so their support lifts me every time,” Sharni admitted.
Moving from her home base of Melbourne to Adelaide, and now to Sydney, Sharni admits the experiences have equipped her with some lessons which she’s eager to pass on… and not just how to expertly pack a suitcase!
And with the potential of stepping on court for the Australian Diamonds during the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 in front of her home fans, Sharni says the experience would be second-to-none.
“Life lessons can transpire in so many ways – whether it be how to handle pressure on court, to how to get over your public speaking fears. I really enjoy helping others achieve their potential, which is why I find Life Coaching so appealing,” Sharni said.
“Our fans are the best and there’s no doubt they deserve a World Cup. I’m so excited because I know the support the Aussies will get here at Sydney Olympic Park will be amazing if they’re anything like our Swifts fans,” Sharni predicted.
“If there’s anything I can pass on from my time in Sydney it’s that the rewards are worth the effort. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone in my decision to move here and it’s reaped rewards – not only for my [on-andoff court] careers, but also for Nick who is now in his dream job and has met some great friends.”
Whether Sharni is part of the 12-strong Diamonds side to contest NWC2015 will be decided following the 2015 ANZ Championship Grand Final. We know Swifts Members and fans – like us! – will be crossing their fingers that she will be. Victoria Bain
While Sharni is full of praise for her “concrete paradise”, it doesn’t hold a flicker to the flame she holds for Swifts’ Members and fans.

SWIFTS IN THE COMMUNITY Some of your favourite NSW Swifts made special community visits before their Round 10 home game, getting out to Clubs and Associations to catch a bit of Saturday morning netball on 18 April. From Blacktown to Bankstown City, Illawarra to the Inner Western Suburbs; and plenty of netball Associations in between! Captain Kimberlee Green was a popular special guest at St George Netball Association, and said at the time it was terrific for the players to have the opportunity to say Thank you. “The tireless work undertaken by thousands of people affiliated with Member Associations across NSW is what makes netball in this state so great,” expressed Green. “These community visits are not just about meeting the next generation of Swifts, but thanking administrators, officials, umpires and volunteers whose passion for netball and giving of knowledge knows no bounds.” The NSW Swifts enjoy the strong community ties it has with NSW netball, and always endeavours to
get out to meet and greet fans when possible. If your Club, Association or school is having a special event you’d like to invite a player to, then head to nswswifts.com.au and complete a Player Appearance Request Form (found under the Community Tab).
The Kids’ Cancer Project’s annual Crazy Hair & Sock Day will be officially celebrated on Saturday 23 May this year and the NSW Swifts are calling all netball teams, schools, Clubs and Associations throughout the State to participate in this year’s Crazy Hair & Sock Day to help raise important funds. The Kids’ Cancer Project (TKCP) is the largest Not-For-Profit funder of childhood cancer research, and thanks to community support, over $24 million has been invested in to Australia’s best childhood cancer research since 2007. The NSW Swifts are getting the party started early today by celebrating its’ Crazy Hair & Sock Day today and we’re asking all our Members and fans to help
raise vital funds for childhood cancer research. Keep your eye out for Oscar Bear and his Bucket Collector helpers, who will be wandering the venue asking for kind donations. If you’d like to do more, then register your interest in hosting your own Crazy Hair & Sock Day – or another Crazy fundraising idea of your own! – by visiting TKCP’s website; www.thekidscancerproject.org.au. In 2014 the netball community helped raise nearly $40,000 towards vital childhood cancer research, and with your help we hope this year goes Beyond Expectation!

Thank you to our Volunteers
On the eve of National Volunteer Week, Netball NSW and the NSW Swifts would like to say THANK YOU to all the amazing individuals who dedicate their own free time to help nurture and grow this wonderful sport we all love. National Volunteer Week 2015 will be celebrated from 11-17 May, however the Club is getting in a day early to highlight some of the amazing behind-the-scenes work our volunteers do. Established in 1989, National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role that these incredible people play in our community.

Whether it is the San Remo Ball Kids who patrol the court boundaries during the game, our Swifts Volunteers who greet you upon arrival – perhaps showing you to your seat, or giving out our First 500 gifts – to the thousands of ‘Susie Grassroots’ netballers who help run local competitions throughout the State every weekend. We can’t THANK YOU enough! For those wishing to give a small token of their thanks to the many dedicated individuals in your community, nominations are open for Clubs and Associations to put forward their valued volunteers for recognition by Netball NSW for their contribution the sport.
Download a ‘Volunteer Recognition Nomination Form’ from www.netballnsw.com and submit before Friday 31 July to ensure you have your ‘Thank You’ certificates to present by the end of the netball season. Join us in showing your appreciation for the volunteers the support your local netball!
How do you enjoy Swifts Insider?
We absolutely LOVED this story that came from North Turramurra Netball Club, and we thought we would share it with our Members and fans to see how you guys enjoy Swifts Insider. Club President Nick Hermann wrote to us telling of a unique ‘Swifts Trivia Challenge’ in which their players had to answer questions by utilising Swifts Insider. “The group was divided into smaller groups and they moved around various stands and activities,” nick told Swifts HQ. “One of the activities was a Swifts Trivia Challenge where they have to find the answers to 25 questions about the NSW Swifts using
the match day magazine as their source. The younger players worked in pairs and absolutely love it! “There were questions about the players, coaching staff, statistics, plus some of the feature stories and even the Club’s sponsors. The Club was keen for the girls to know more about the Swifts as we have 2015 Memberships and take turns taking players to every home game.
Thanks to North Turramurra for your EXCELLENT use of the Swifts Insider magazine! If you have your own story about how you utilise the Club’s match day magazine, email us at nswswifts@netballnsw.com – you can even include some photos, like Nick did!
“The players really enjoyed the experience, which is evident as many Mums and Dads are now asking why their children all of a sudden are asking them to make Taylah Davies’ Butter Chicken!”

What a BLOCKBUSTER! Netball NSW and the NSW Swifts would like to thank all our Members and supporters who joined us at Allphones Arena last weekend for a record-breaking day for the Club. Not only did you help us set a new League record for the largest attendance at a regular season match (all 10,370 of you!) but the Swifts also scored the most goals against (67) and won by the biggest margin (24 goals) over our traditional rivals the Melbourne Vixens since the competition began. In the wise words of Head Coach Rob Wright, “WE HAVE THE WORLD’S BEST FANS!” From the time the first doors opened, you were there enjoying the spoils of pre-game entertainment; from dancing with the NOVA 969 Casanovas, getting your ‘game face’ ready at the Face Painting and Swifts’ Styling Station, to getting your own Swifts Insider cover at the QBE Photo Booth. The energy was electric on court with your cheers giving the players the confidence to perform at their best, with the Swifts’ putting on their most complete performance of the 2015 ANZ Championship so far! Whether we dared to believe or not, THANK YOU for creating such an amazing atmosphere which surpassed our efforts in 2014. Your support is integral to our Club’s success and we share those with you as one big family. Finally, thank you once more for joining us again today for what is our penultimate home fixture of the 2015 season; we hope to see you next week for our final showdown at home for 2015!
