JODI BROWN

KAYLA CULLEN

Positions: GA, GS Height: 1.85m DOB: 6 May 1981 Test Caps: 42 Silver Ferns Squad: 2002–07, 2012–14 Test Debut: 12 July 2003 v Niue, in Jamaica

Positions: WD, GD, C Height: 1.85m DOB: 13 February 1992 Test Caps: 12 Silver Ferns Squad: 2011–2014 Test Debut: October 3, 2011 v England in Auckland

In the Silver Ferns squad for more than a decade, Jodi Brown is one of the senior members of the team, renowned for her consistently high work-rate in the shooting circle.

Kayla Cullen has endured a long recovery from a major knee injury, working hard on her fitness to earn her way back into the Silver Ferns Squad for the 2014/2015 season. Cullen has taken the traditional route on her way to the Silver Ferns, progressing through the NZ Secondary School ranks and the NZU21 Squad.

The girl from Whanganui gained 28 test caps for New Zealand before stepping out of international Netball in 2007 to start a family. Now a mother of two, Brown made a remarkable comeback to the Silver Ferns after a five-year absence. Her reselection came after a strong performance for the Southern Steel in the 2012 ANZ Championship, playing her way back into the national team in 2012 for the Constellation Cup and Quad Series. Jodi will play for the Central Pulse in the 2015 ANZ Championship.

12

SILVER FERNS SQUAD

www.mynetball.co.nz

Hints of her undoubted talent were highlighted when Kayla was named part of the New Zealand team which successfully defended the 2010 and 2011 World FastNet title without their Silver Ferns. Cullen played an outstanding season by becoming a first choice starter and scooping the 2011 ANZ Championship Best Young Player award. Cullen is a versatile player, playing in a myriad of positions for the Northern Mystics, including centre and goal defence.

LEANA DE BRUIN Positions: GD, GK Height: 1.90m DOB: 9 July 1977 Test Caps: 81 NZ; 34 South Africa Silver Ferns Squad: 2002–08, 2010–14 Test Debut: 26 February 2003 v England, in England An energetic and rangy defender, Leana de Bruin began her international Netball career in South Africa where she earned 34 test caps for her country of birth. A move to New Zealand followed in 2000, along with selection in the Silver Ferns, earning herself a regular starting spot in the defensive end next to captain Casey Kopua. With World Championship and Commonwealth Games titles to her name, de Bruin has carved her name in the annals of New Zealand’s Netballing history as one of the great defenders to take the court for the Ferns. De Bruin was in the WBOP Magic team which won the ANZ Championship title in 2012. She continues to make an impact as a respected defender and is playing arguably some of the best Netball of her career for both the Magic and the Silver Ferns.

Temalisi FAKAHOKOTAU Positions: GD, WD, GK Height: 1.82m DOB: 9 September 1994 Test Caps: 0

Exciting young defender Temalisi Fakahokotau enjoyed an impressive 2014 ANZ Championship season with the Northern Mystics, featuring in 12 matches against world class opposition while still a teenager. Of Tongan descent, Temalisi is one of nine siblings and has taken giant strides forward over the past few years since being spotted by Emerging Talent Selectors in 2012. She was named in both Trans-Tasman, and New Zealand Secondary Schools squads, followed by the Emerging Talent Accelerant Group Selection (now the National Player Development Squad), and Netball Northern Zone Under 23’s.

SHANNON FRANCOIS Positions: C, WA Height: 1.78m DOB: 12 October 1990 Test Caps: 11 Silver Ferns Squad: 2013–2014 Test Debut: 4 October 2013 v Australia in Adelaide 2013 was a break-through year for midcourter Shannon Francois, called into the Silver Ferns squad as cover and quickly made her mark with her speed to the circle edge matching the best in the world. She was named in the Silver Ferns team for the Australian leg of the 2013 Constellation Cup fixtures and earned her first cap against the Australian Diamonds in the third test match in Adelaide. Francois was selected to tour the UK as part of a 12-strong Silver Ferns team in January 2014 and her selection into the Silver Ferns team for the Commonwealth Games was reward for her hard work. In the ANZ Championship, Francois has found her niche with the Southern Steel and has had another stellar year in the midcourt in 2014, re-signing for the 2015 season.

JOLINE HENRY

Positions: GK, GD, WD Height: 1.86m DOB: 6 May 1987 Test Caps: 55 Silver Ferns Squad: 2008-2014 Test Debut: 20 September 2008 v Australia, in Auckland

Positions: GS, GA Height: 1.85m DOB: 25 July 1990 Test Caps: 4 Silver Ferns Squad 2014 Test Debut: 26 July 2014 v Scotland in Glasgow

Positions: WD, C Height: 1.83m DOB: 29 September 1982 Test Caps: 85 Silver Ferns Squad: 2003-2014 Test Debut: 5 July 2004 v Australia in Hamilton

National Netball selectors spotted Katrina Grant’s potential early in the peace. After winning the 2005 World Youth Championships with the NZU21 team, Grant progressed to NZA and was added to the Silver Ferns squad in March 2008 following good performances as a training camp invitee.

Ellen Halpenny enjoyed a stellar season for the Kia Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ Championship under coach Julie Fitzgerald. Paired with former Tactix teammate Jo Harten in the shooting circle, Halpenny impressed national selectors with her tenacious play, gritty determination and an improved work rate.

Tenacious mid-courter Joline Henry has been an integral member of the Silver Ferns for a decade, making her on-court debut in 2004 against Australia.

The athletic, rangy defender is known for her fearless contribution in the defensive circle and a competitive attitude.

A versatile attacking player who can interchange between goal attack and goal shooter, Halpenny also picks up more than her share of centre pass receives.

With the start of the ANZ Championship in 2008, Henry signed with the WBOP Magic, moving to the Auckland-based Northern Mystics for the 2009-2011 seasons.

She was the only new cap in the NZ team of 12 to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games winning silver, and was thrust into the starting line-up following injuries to Cathrine Latu and Maria Tutaia, showing a cool head under immense pressure.

Henry now plays for the Central Pulse team where she anchors the midcourt defence. She has an uncanny ability to read the game and is always looking to offload into the shooting circle from the midcourt.

Her antics as part of the FAST5 Ferns in the FAST5 Netball World Series is legendary and she is known to be the mastermind behind any creative attempts by the Ferns at pre-game entertainment. Katrina is the captain of the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship.

Henry was in the Silver Ferns side which won the inaugural World Netball Series in 2009 and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medal in Delhi.

Henry is the first choice wing defence for New Zealand Netball team and was an integral member of the Ferns team at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Defender Phoenix Karaka made her Silver Ferns debut with a cameo appearance in the final minute of the test match between New Zealand and England in January 2014. Injected into the travelling squad for the tour of the United Kingdom, the experience gave Karaka invaluable insight into the inner workings of the Silver Ferns, drawing on the coaching expertise of Waimarama Taumaunu as well as being welcomed into the fold by the Silver Ferns team members. She was given the opportunity take the court in the three exhibition matches against the Scottish Thistles and England A. Karaka’s reselection comes on the back of an impressive ANZ Championship season for the Southern Steel.

(ONZM)

The Silver Ferns have a proud history of producing outstanding defenders, none more so than Casey Kopua. The 29 year old has been leading the Silver Ferns since July 2009, her first victory as captain against the Australian Diamonds in the first match of the 2009 Holden Netball Test Series, on 6 September at Acer Arena, Sydney. Playing in either the goal keep or goal defence position on court, Kopua is well known for her aerial intercepts and dogged determination. Her dedication to Netball was recognised in 2011, named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List as an Officer for the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Netball. Kopua has spent the past seven ANZ Championship seasons playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic side and will lead the team again in 2015.

16

www.mynetball.co.nz

Dynamic mid-courter Laura Langman is one of the finest ball carriers in the game, boasting an incredible record of taking to the court for every Silver Ferns match since her selection in 2005. Langman is only the third player to have reached the 100 game milestone for New Zealand which she did in January, 2014. Langman is the vice-captain of the Silver Ferns and after six years of ANZ Championship Netball playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, played for the Northern Mystics in the 2014 season and has signed again for the Mystics in 2015. As a key team member and vice-captain of the Silver Ferns, Langman is the Ferns’ linchpin in the midcourt with her skilful play on both attack and defence. She will become the second most capped Silver Fern if she plays more than three matches in the upcoming New World Netball Series against Australia and England, surpassing Lesley Rumball (on 110 test caps), Irene van Dyk (145).

Cathrine Latu has continued to add the polish to her abundant repertoire of skills in the shooting circle. After electing to play for Samoa at the 2007 Netball World Championships in Auckland, Latu then needed to complete a four-year standdown to become eligible to play for the Silver Ferns. Inclusion in the Silver Ferns squad became a formality in September 2011, making her debut against England in October the same year. Latu is consistently in the top three in the ANZ Championship for shooting accuracy and is playing the best Netball of her career to date. She will once again play for the Northern Mystics in the 2015 ANZ Championship.

Silver Ferns mid-courter Camilla (Millie) Lees is a dynamic and athletic midcourter consistently putting in strong performances in the wing attack position.

Liana Leota made headlines this year, making a comeback to elite Netball in the ANZ Championship for the Haier Pulse just five weeks after the birth of her third child.

Lees was selected for the Silver Ferns tour to England for the inaugural 2009 World Netball Series, and tests against England and Jamaica in October 2009. A talented athlete, Lees has a wide skill-set and is particularly effective on defence.

A determined and competitive midcourter, Leota has the ability to change the pace of a game. Her sense of timing with circle edge feeds into the shooters is instinctive and her natural ability has seen her reselected into the Silver Ferns midcourt for the first time since 2011.

Her on-court debut for the Silver Ferns was in Manchester, England at the start of 2011. She continues to impress selectors with her tenacious ability to find space and feed her shooters with accuracy. Lees re-joins the Silver Ferns squad after missing the 2013 international season with injury and will play the 2015 ANZ Championship season with the Northern Mystics.

18

SILVER FERNS SQUAD

www.mynetball.co.nz

She was a key team member of the gold medal winning Commonwealth Games side in Delhi in 2010, her experience in the cauldron of high pressure Netball is invaluable to the Ferns set up.

Bailey Mes is one of the Silver Ferns’ rising stars after impressing selectors at national trials in August, 2012. Mes has the skills to play in the midcourt and the shooting circle, earning a regular starting spot at the end of the Northern Mystics season in 2013. A serious knee injury dashed her chances of selection for the Silver Ferns squad later that year but with impressive elevation combined with her 1.87m height, she promises to be a dynamic addition to the Ferns’ squad in 2014/2015. Bailey will play her ANZ Championship Netball next season for the Mainland Tactix following five years at the Northern Mystics.

Valuable utility attacker Grace Rasmussen cut her teeth in international Netball at the 2005 World Youth Netball Championships as part of the winning NZU21 side. In 2009, Rasmussen travelled to England as a training partner for the Silver Ferns, and was included in the Ferns squad soon after. Of Samoan origin, it was a special moment for Grace to make her Silver Ferns’ debut against Samoa in Porirua in 2010. She had frequent court time in pool play at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi on the path to New Zealand’s victory. Grace was an integral part of the Northern Mystics side in the ANZ Championship for six years until signing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic for the 2014 season a move which paid dividends, with the team reaching the ANZ Championship Finals Series for the seventh consecutive year.

One year later, Tairi was named in the team of 12 for the Swifts, playing either wing attack or centre positions. In 2011, Tairi cemented her place in the starting line-up for Swifts, later signing with New Zealand franchise Southern Steel in 2012 where she played for two seasons. A solid 2014 ANZ Championship season for the WBOP Magic and a strong Silver Ferns trial has seen Tairi reselected in the squad for the 2014/2015 season. On the international Netball scene, Tairi played for Australia at U21 level in 2009.

Ameliaranne Wells made herself available for the Silver Ferns this year and was rewarded with a spot in the squad after trials in September. Of NgaāPuhi heritage the talented and versatile shooter has made the move across the Tasman to bolster New Zealand’s shooting stocks and joins the Ferns with an excellent track record, including an ANZ Championship crown which she won with the Queensland Firebirds in 2011. Ameliaranne will play for the Central Pulse in the 2015 ANZ Championship.

Waimarama Taumaunu is a former Silver Ferns captain and almost needs no introduction with her Netball pedigree as one of the world’s top defenders, representing the Ferns for more than a decade from 1981-1991, including the 1987 World Championship winning team.

This former Australian Netball captain is one of the finest shooters ever to play the game. Vicki Wilson joined the Silver Ferns management team in August, 2013 as assistant coach, working closely with coach Waimarama Taumaunu.

Since retiring from playing Netball, Taumaunu has had stints as the National Performance Director for All England Netball (1998-2003), assistant coach for England (2003 World Championships), NZA team coach and a previous term as Silver Ferns assistant coach (1997-1998 and more recently 2008-2012 assisting Ruth Aitken). One career highlight was pairing with Aitken to lead the national side to Commonwealth Games glory in 2010, defeating Australia in double extra time. In the 1992 New Year Honours, Taumaunu was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to Netball and was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Vicki started her international playing career in 1985, selected into the Australian Netball team, a spot she held for fifteen years. In that time, she earned 104 Test Caps, three World Championship gold medals and one Commonwealth Games gold medal. She was awarded the Order of Australia medal in 1992. Since retiring in 1999, Vicki has forged a successful high performance coaching career, and is highly sought after all around Australasia delivering, coordinating and managing high performance programmes. Vicki’s ability to deliver professional leadership which sets vision combined with individual and team goals sets her apart.

The West Australian is now regarded as one of the world’s premier goal shooters, highlighted by her performance spearheading Australia to victory at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Bassett shot 49 goals at 92 per cent accuracy in the final and is sure to cause headaches for opposition defences for many years to come. Bassett made her Test debut in 2008 but became a household name at the 2011 World Championships in Singapore where she shot the match-winning goal with one second left on the clock in extra time. She finished that tournament with 151 goals at an incredible 97 per cent accuracy. She has consistently been one of the top scorers in the ANZ Championship.

Known for her persistent defending skills and tight marking in the circle, Bulley’s talent and determination saw her gain selection into the Diamonds team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Bulley was a replacement player during the 2011 Holden Netball Test Series, making the most of her opportunities to keep herself very much on the radar. In 2012 Bulley moved to the Adelaide Thunderbirds and won three of the club’s four awards in her debut year, including the prestigious Player of the Year. She backed up this year to play a key role in the Thunderbirds triumphant ANZ Championship title-winning side. In 2013 she played in the team against New Zealand and Malawi.

After a couple of years on the fringe of the Diamonds, Caldwell finally made her international debut at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her first test cap came against Wales and she converted her first shot at goal in the green and gold, finishing the match with 12 goals. The 26-year-old’s selection was just reward for her stunning 2014 ANZ Championship campaign for the Melbourne Vixens where she shot a career-high 347 goals and was named Player of the Match in their Grand Final triumph. Capable of playing at either goal attack or shooter, her fitness and accuracy under the ring are superb. Speed, tenacity and defensive pressure are all major features of her game. She also represented the Australian FAST5 Flyers in 2013.

It was a triumphant return to international duties for the 2009 Liz Ellis Diamond winner at this year’s Commonwealth Games after a series of knee and foot injuries sidelined her from the Australian line-up for almost two years. Her last Test prior to Glasgow was in September 2012. The 27-year-old’s performances during the Games highlighted why she’s such an important part of Australia’s defensive end at either goal defence or wing defence. Having spent the past two ANZ Championship seasons based in based in Auckland with the Northern Mystics, Corletto has moved back to Australia and will line-up with the NSW Swifts in 2015.

In her first year as sole captain of the NSW Swifts, Kimberlee Green was joint winner of the ANZ Championship Most Valuable Player Award and also named in the ANZ Championship All-Star Team for the first time.

One of the influential playmakers in the Australian Diamonds line-up, Hallinan has enjoyed outstanding success over the past 12 months. She was a key part of the Adelaide Thunderbirds 2013 ANZ Championship triumph and was rewarded for a fantastic series against New Zealand and Malawi by being named winner of the Liz Ellis Diamond.

The hard-working defender returned to the green and gold in 2013 after missing the 2012 international series because of injury thanks to a dominating ANZ Championship season with the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

Laura Geitz is widely respected by her peers as one of the most inspirational players and leaders in the ANZ Championship and is transforming those qualities into the international arena. Before this year’s Constellation Cup series, Geitz had a remarkable 93 per cent strike rate as Australian captain and led the Diamonds to 13 consecutive victories. She was also scheduled to become the 24th Australian player to reach the 50-Test milestone in the opening match of the Constellation Cup at Invercargill. Geitz made her test debut in 2008 and in 2011 led the Queensland Firebirds to the ANZ Championship title and also won the coveted Liz Ellis Diamond.

The 28-year-old was named vice-captain for last year’s Test Series against Malawi and, is a physically strong and athletic midcourter who won’t back off in any pressure situation. She is a dynamic player renowned for her explosive power, quick hands and her fierce competitive nature. Green wears her heart on her sleeve and plays the game with great intensity and passion.

Hallinan took over the Thunderbirds captaincy in 2014 following the retirement of Natalie von Bertouch and made amends for missing Australia’s 2011 World Championship triumph by helping lead the team to gold at this year’s Commonwealth Games. She reached the 50-Test milestone in Australia’s semi-final victory against Jamaica.

A former AIS scholarship holder and vicecaptain of the 2009 World Youth Netball Championship winning side, Layton entered the ANZ Championship with a bang in 2010. She cemented her spot in the Thunderbirds starting seven, winning the league’s Best Young Player award and her first premiership. Her versatility to cover all three defensive positions and her never say die attitude saw her win a place on Australia’s victorious 2011 World Championship team.

McMeniman retired after playing in the Queensland Firebirds historic 2011 ANZ Championship Grand Final, only to be lured back by good friend and captain Laura Geitz for the 2014 season.

The move to Perth to the West Coast Fever in 2014 allowed Natalie Medhurst’s goal circle combination with Caitlin Bassett grow and develop.

Her experience proved invaluable for the young Firebirds squad as they made it back-to-back Grand Final appearances. The 29-year-old played every match and was rewarded for her consistent form by being called up as a training partner and then officially added to the Diamonds squad and then team. She was also part of the Australian squad in 2011 and would love to cap off her career with a Test cap.

The 30-year-old is a clever playmaker with elusive qualities and in 2014 became the first Australian to reach the 100-game milestone in the ANZ Championship. Her career accolades include being joint winner of the ANZ Championship MVP in 2011 and was one of the stars of Australia’s triumphant World Championship campaign that same year, winning three Player of the Match awards including the unforgettable final against the Silver Ferns.

Ravaillion is an intelligent player whose game has a good mix of speed and athleticism. She has come through Netball Australia’s pathway system, winning the Most Valuable Player award at the 2012 19/U National Championships, impressed in the Australian Netball League with the AIS, earned an ANZ Championship contract with the Queensland Firebirds and was selected in the Australian FAST5 team before being named in the Diamonds team for their tour of England in January 2013, where she played in all three matches. The New South Wales native was a member of Australia’s 2013 World Youth Netball Championship team.

Robinson’s career reached a pinnacle in 2014, winning her first ANZ Championship title with the Melbourne Vixens and then claiming a Commonwealth Games gold medal. Both were satisfying achievements for Robinson having missed out on being part of Australia’s 2011 World Championship triumph. Robinson captained Australia to the 2009 World Youth Netball Championship and made her international debut in 2010 on the Diamonds’ UK tour where she earned the Player of the Match accolade in her first Test against Scotland in Glasgow. In 2012 Robinson was rewarded for her season by winning the Australian International Player of the Year award, ANZ Championship Player of the Year award and the prestigious Liz Ellis Diamond, the highest individual honour in Australian Netball.

A consistent performer for club and country, Sara is a firm favourite among the fans and continues to win rave reviews from experts across the globe. Her eye for a delicate pass and ability to read the game often makes her a nightmare for opposing players to contain.

Dominant in the defensive, Eboni has made the GD bib her own in recent tournaments. She is an imposing and authoritative figure for England and has struck up an excellent understanding alongside Geva Mentor to be a part of one of the most feared units in the world.

Effortless transition play coupled with an astonishing work-rate, Sara is one of the toughest mid-courters currently on the international stage.

Eboni has been recognised for her outstanding displays in the ANZ Championship with MVP awards while at West Coast Fever and she makes the move over to the Adelaide Thunderbirds for the forthcoming season.

Winning over 50 caps, Ama is an experienced member of the England defensive unit and her versatility on court is a fantastic benefit for the side. Another member of the England squad to have a fantastic season with Team Bath in 2014. Sam formed a wonderful partnership with Stacey Francis and impressed with her ability to make impossible tips and interceptions.

Kadeen is a real enigma in the England squad and often draws gasps from the crowd with her impressive shot making. Her movement around the circle and dominant nature allows the play to have fluidity in attack.

Rarely allowing opposing shooters room to breathe let alone move, Sam is an upcoming star for her country.

Nothing is done in half measures for the incredibly passionate Stacey Francis. Every goal conceded hurts the Team Bath defender, this steely determination making her work as hard as anyone else on court. The continuous pressure forces opposing players into mistakes as her constant presence and ability to steal the ball from any position often sees her emerge with the ball.

As the Commonwealth Games showcased, Serena is one of the toughest members of the England squad. Always willing to put her body on the line, no interception or pass is seen as impossible to reach for the ridiculously athletic and energetic midcourter. On top of this, the popular Serena also possesses wonderful movement and a fantastic cohesion to her play.

Rightly regarded as one of the finest shooters in the game, Jo is firmly on her way to establishing herself as an England legend. She is a complete attacking player, as composed shooting from the edge of the circle as she is popping one in from close range.

Rachel is an incredibly experienced member of the squad who oozes composure in everything she does on court. The area under the post is the natural habitat for Rachel who holds her space wonderfully against defenders of all varieties, making herself an excellent target to finish off swift through court moves from her England side.
