Distinctive Destinations Holidays for the discerning traveller
It gives me great pleasure to write a few words in this latest edition of our Distinctive Destinations brochure, for many reasons. First and foremost, I count it a great privilege to be in such an exciting industry, albeit a very challenging and sometimes very difficult one!
And it is with much enthusiasm that I bring you the news of 2013 so far. In April, I was extremely proud to receive a top honour at the Agent Achievement Awards at a grand event held at the Lancaster Gate Hotel in London. Travel Stop had been invited as a guest of Titan Travel to receive the Titan Agent of the Year Award.
What I hadn’t been expecting was to be awarded the TIPTO (Truly Independent Professional Travel Organisation) Independent Agent of the Year 2013 as well! I accepted the award proudly and on behalf of my very dedicated team – without whom this would not have been possible. Whilst my expectations set the very high benchmark of service standards to which we aspire, it is my team that ultimately delivers that service, which has been recognised within the industry.
considered myself a relatively small fish in a very large pond so you can only imagine my surprise (to say the very least!) when, at the gala dinner on the final night, Travel Stop was named as the Worldchoice Independent Agent of the Year 2013. As the name was called out and my company logo appeared on the TV screens around the room, I remained in my seat with feelings of disbelief and incredulity, living a very surreal moment! Being the recipient of this award, my reaction was once again, one of sheer pride and delight.
In June, I will be attending the AITO Conference in Dubai. The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) is an organisation made up of the UK's finest independent holiday companies offering an unrivalled collection of financially protected quality holidays from award-winning specialist independent tour operators and sold through high quality independent travel agents. This year, our Distinctive Destinations brochure includes a selection of travel experiences from some of our loyal and frequent travellers. They enjoyed sharing them with us and we, in turn, will enjoy sharing them with you. I hope you find the content to be both interesting and informative and will whet your appetite for future travel. Our staff have participated in many exciting trips already this year, and will be equally happy to share their experiences with you. Our doors are always open to you – not just when you wish to book, but also to hear your feedback and for you to hear ours. The journeys we take are there to share. That brings me to thank you, as always, for your support. As said by Mahatma Gandhi, “A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to serve him.” We genuinely appreciate your custom and you may rest assured that we will never take your business for granted, or indeed become complacent. At Travel Stop we are aware that you have a choice and we will always be delighted when you exercise it in our favour.
In mid-May I was a delegate at the annual TNG (Travel Network Group) Worldchoice Conference held in Lake Bled, Slovenia. The TNG is the largest independent travel network in Europe. They are very much at the forefront of the travel industry, leading the way to the benefit of all operating in the independent travel market. I have always
Kind regards

It’s hot, it’s February, is that cardamom I can smell………then it must be India? Now I know that there are many wonderful places to visit and that one lifetime is not long enough to do justice to all of the many and varied brochures lurking on the shelves of Travel Stop but there is something about India that keeps calling us back. There is something here for every taste and budget. However we have found that a good combination is to combine a private hire vehicle and driver with a selection of “home-stays” where you live and eat with the family, giving you an opportunity to become immersed in the local culture. Kerala is probably the gem of Southern India, containing as it does many fine buildings left by the Portuguese, Dutch and British traders. Cochin is a popular point of arrival and whilst the airport may not benefit from every facility it has relatively easy access (by Indian standards of chaos) and it is one of the best places to buy your rupees. We are always met by our driver who, it became very clear from our first visit, was our new best friend and has remained so over the years. Key to the enjoyment of any trip to India is a good driver, both for safety and also because he will take a delight in showing you village life, away from the well travelled tourist routes. We have travelled the “back-waters” once by rice boat, an unforgettable experience waking at dawn watching the birdlife and then the local fishermen starting their day. In total contrast we love to travel to the mountains, a tea plantation near Munnar is our choice and there are many to choose from. Here the nights are cool enough to require a pullover, we have even woken to a heavy frost but no fear the sun soon changes all of that! This is a paradise for birdwatchers, walkers and artists, a whole day can easily vanish doing nothing
but drinking in the beauty of the mountains. At the end of the trip if we fancy a few days luxury nowhere could be better than the Marari Beach Resort, excellent food, service and air conditioned chalet accommodation. However, we often extend our journey north to the area around Kannur to take in a Theyyam performance, these are definitely not for the benefit of tourists and we are often objects of curiosity as the only Europeans present. Accommodation here can be basic but a room overlooking an empty beach is quite an experience – and the food is good too. Tamil Nadu presents a very different image; it is more arid and though agricultural lacks the lush greens of Kerala. The best point of arrival is Chennai (Madras), the home of EBay and Pay Pal! Our visits there have enabled us to explore the development of temples over thousands of years, the largest of which is situated in Madurai. We drove to Pondicherry (an old French trading colony) stopping en route to visit Auroville, a unique Ecocolony. Further on is the “Chettinad” region. They were dealers in teak from Burma who built magnificent palaces on the profits; many are now in a poor state of repair but still provide a fascinating insight to an earlier era. One or two of the properties have now been restored and operate as boutique hotels, which provide a brief moment of luxury during our journey. Back into the hills we headed for Udagamandalam which was one of the famous hill stations that provided our forebears with relief from the premonsoon heat. The best way to arrive is via the narrow gauge steam railway, which starts from Mettupalayam and provides photogenic views at every turn. Our favourite place to stay is in Coonor, where there is an extensive botanical garden. On to Karnataka where we visited Mysore where the Maharajah’s palace is a wonder of Victorian cast iron, before taking a restful few hours on the banks of the Carvery river where as well as fantastic birdlife we found crocodiles. Finally we took in the ancient fortifications where Tippu Sultan met his end at the hands of British forces. If ancient archaeology attracts you then the temples at Hassan are a must. A couple are very much on the tourist route but we found a gem off the beaten track that remains unspoiled and the pride of the local village. Through Travel Stop we have continued to use the same agent, TransIndus and driver since our first visit, what better recommendation could there be?

Last summer we attended the Travel Club lunch as we normally do, and were very interested in a talk on Bermuda by Prestige Holidays. During the lunch I bombarded the speaker who was sitting next to me, with numerous questions and was much taken with the idea of visiting Bermuda. She recommended various hotels which she thought would be suitable for our interests. When we arrived home, I immediately looked up on the internet the hotels concerned and Bermuda in general, and the upshot was that within a week we had booked a 14 day holiday with Prestige through Travel Stop of course. We decided to split the trip in two, with 4 days in the capital, Hamilton, at a small hotel called the Rosedon, and 10 days at a hotel called Cambridge Beaches where we upgraded to a suite as we would be spending some time there, situated on a peninsula surrounded by beaches. Bermuda consists of a chain of some 150 coral islands and islets and 10 of the islands are linked by bridges and causeways to form the principal mainland. The coastline is characterised by a succession of small bays with beaches of fine pale sand with some looking pink next to the vivid blue-green water. It is a British Overseas Territory and English is the official language. Our direct daylight flight was excellent and we were driven straight to our first hotel, the Rosedon. This was perfect for us as it was within easy walking
distance of the harbour and town centre. Breakfasts were served on our terrace overlooking beautiful gardens and pool and all we had to do was lift the telephone and say what we wanted and it was there shortly after. As Hamilton is in the middle of Bermuda, we were able to visit by bus and ferry, various places to the north including St George’s. Both towns are very ‘old’ English with interesting architecture. The people are very friendly and happy to chat. After our days of exploration we were taken on to our second hotel, Cambridge Beaches. This was a fantastic hotel and our suite was wonderful with views over one of the beaches and surrounded by colourful bushes and flowers. Here we were able again to make use of the excellent bus service to visit the villages and areas around us including the Royal Naval Dockyard which began as a massive fortress and dockyard in 1809 and now has a cruise terminal, tourist village, marina, Bermuda Arts Centre and the Maritime Museum in the old Commissioners House. The old railway which used to run the length of the mainland has been removed and is now a superb walk with wonderful views. As it is many miles long, it can be walked in pieces with the aid of the bus service. Bus transport is relatively cheap but you have to pay in coins (exact amount) or pre-bought tokens. Buses are very frequent and bus stops are everywhere. Although many people think Bermuda is part of the Caribbean it is in fact 1000 miles north of it and only 600 miles from the nearest coast of the USA which is why the majority of visitors are American. At our last hotel we found that some Americans come several times a year and over a period of many years. There is a wall in the hotel dedicated to the names of their guests and the number of times they have visited. Our overnight journey home was again uneventful and we were grateful to Prestige Holidays (and Travel Stop) that all the arrangements and hotels
that they had organised were exactly what we had wanted.

nowhere we encountered a zebra crossing and a rolling elephant roadblock – an enchanting 20 minute hold-up! Now Having enjoyed our visit to Kenya so much in 2011, we returned in 2012 with the excellent help of Madeleine at Travel Stop. After arriving at Nairobi in the morning, we transferred to the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi for an overnight stay. We were met the following morning by our guide/driver and headed for Amboseli Game Park (4hr 30mins drive). On arrival we had lunch then set off on a game drive. Very soon we met this amazing elephant, approximately 50 years old and weighing some seven tons.
This was quite a green area and we soon arrived at the swamp – the one seen in David Attenborough’s AFRICA.
Along the way we saw zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, hippo and giraffes on their way to drink and wallow. We had wonderful views of Kilimanjaro at quite close range. In spite of being in the middle of
We had a lovely lodge to stay in with beautiful flowers surrounding the reception and restaurant area. So then we were off on a panoramic drive through the Rift Valley having called at the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi. You need to be very hungry! We then passed through the rose growing area before arriving at Lake Naivasha. Again we had superb accommodation and excellent food with a lodge set in parkland with
giraffes passing by quite closely and at night hippos strolled by even closer. We went on a boat trip on Lake Naivasha to see, close up, the hippos which stand all day in the lake and leave to graze at night by the lakeside.
The following day we drove to Lake Nakuru and had a tour of the Nakuru Game Park. Here we saw lions, giraffes, black and white rhinos,
buffalo, zebra, impala and flamingoes in the lake. A beautiful area with surprises round every bend. Next day off for a 4 hour drive to the Masai Mara – a completely different landscape. After lunch we were off again on a game drive. We came upon a pride of lionesses and cubs which had just eaten - well satisfied. Also there were elephants gazelles and a topi.
Today was leopard day! She had killed and eat en whe n we ar r i ve d. It was the turn of the vultures – as well as golden eagle, pied crows, jackal and hyena. We had some very close up views of the leopard. Also there was a leopard resting up in the cool of a tree which we watched for some 20 minutes. We then found two boy cheetahs lazing under a very isolated tree, who were quite content to pose.
Then we came upon a herd of some 20 giraffes – quite majestic. A highlight was the lioness with 3 very young cubs
returning to the pride for the first time; an unusual sight apparently and even impressed our guide of 25 years. By now we had seen the big 5 again. It is im possible to convey the full excitement we felt on this trip. All the staff had been very helpful and knowledgeable and catered for our ever y n eed. Bac k to Nair obi and an emotional farewell. Can’t wait to go again!

Together with my wife Jean and friends, Valerie and Gordon, we have completed eight trips with Great Rail Journeys. The first was in 2006 when bookings had to be direct with the Company and now with the help of Travel Stop we have places reserved for June on a river boat cruising the Danube.
Next to the hotel is a church containing memorabilia of Sherlock Holmes.
Getting to the top and back involves no less than eight separate trains with the final change to “rack and pinion” to cope with the 25% steep gradient.
The highlight of this tour has to be the train journey up the Jungfrau to the highest station in Europe known as Jungfraujoch.
The sights from the top of Jungfrau are stunning.
Travel is by Eurostar to Brussels, overnight in Cologne and then on by ICE train to Passau on the borders of Germany and Austria. During the journey we pass some breathtaking scenery.
Of all the train journeys we have completed, the Great Rail tour to the “Top of Europe” stands out as my favourite. Centred on Meiringen in Switzerland and served by the narrow gauge railway from Interlaken, the town is noted for its connection with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He spent much of his time their and went as far in his writings to allow his famous detective Sherlock Holmes to fall to his death in company with his arch-enemy Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls close to Meiringen.
Incidentally, in German, Jungfrau stands for maiden/virgin and is one of the main summits in the Bernese Alps. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are a must as snow will be present and warnings are given to delay alighting from the train to acclimatise to the altitude conditions. In our case the problem soon disappeared. The 1000mm track was completed between 1896 and 1898 but the station was not opened until 1912 and is in fact built inside the mountain. Hard to believe that the summit now includes a small hotel, restaurant, observatory, research station and “Ice Palace” incorporating ice sculptures. This was the middle section of a very memorable 10 night trip that Travel Stop and Great Rail Journeys organised. We love the relaxed atmosphere on the train where everyone has a good view and can enjoy the surrounding countryside.

CHILE - By Sheila Miller There are many trips incorporating Chile, but I particularly wanted to visit the Atacama Dessert and south to the Magellan Straits. After researching, I chose Cox and Kings' excellent itinerary.
Santiago first, is a wonderful cosmopolitan city, sitting closely to the mighty Andes Range. We were introduced to many important features, 18th Century Cathedral, Museums, Presidential Palace, previously the Mint, a number of Plazas and to a high point viewing the enormous city as well as a botanical garden. Santiago's Bellavista, the artists quarter, is filled with galleries, theatres, café’s, and a lively night-life. We looked forward to the afternoon winery visit enjoying the sun's glorious warmth. Undurraga estate was centred in magnificent parkland and we were shown the modern processing plant as well as a wine tasting of some beautiful wines. A very jolly outing!! Early flight north, and drive to our base,San Pedro, a little dusty, relaxed town, We embarked to the Valley of the Moon.
We walked through a valley with a most unusual landscape, eroded by wind and water; quite extraordinary.
Moved on then to wait with hundreds for the Sunset! The result was sensational. The mountain ranges gradually changing colours, bright yellows, reds, orange. The atmosphere absolutely stunning, sensuous, almost unbelievable, magical. Next day, Sala de Atacama, one of the largest salt lakes in the world, an opportunity to view flamingoes.
A very beautiful area, these unusual birds appearing so elegant, dipping their heads down for food, within the salt waters, the horizon in the distance. At 4am next day a few of us journeyed upwards 4500m through the mountains to view the sunrise at El Tatio Geyers.
Yet again an extraordinary experience, from barely seeing where to step, I gradually moved on the wet sloshy surface carefully between the enormous geysers spitting out scalding water and great clouds of steam from the bowels of the planet. Having seen these natural phenomena before, the large area and number of them dotted where ever one looked made it very impressive. Flying south via Santiago we reached Puerto Varas, the Chilean Lake District, and here experienced shimmering lakes, postcard villages, smouldering volcanoes, good fishing, walking, but we had a boat-trip and visit to Osorno Volcano 2660m., with the Andes towering in the beautiful background. We visited the Otway Sound for the Magellan penguin colony, very cold and windy here, nearer the Antarctic.and Last Hope Sound. A two and a half hour drive to the renowned Torres Del Paine National Park was
ver y s pec tac ular . Dis tinc tive mountains throughout, many animals, puma, fox, llama, rhea co-exist in Patagonia – a rich landscape of grasses, heather, calafate berries and amazing flora. We enjoyed a delightful lakeside picnic, then emerald waters roaring down the grand waterfall with wind where I barely kept my feet on the ground! Dressed in the “gear” and life jacket, via a pontoon bobbing up and down, we hazardously boarded the boat for the not to be forgotten Glacier trip.
Next day before returning to Santiago we visited a Sheep Ranch for a sheep-dog trial, sheep shearing and a lovely lunch of lamb roasted on the spit. The best lunch of all the trip and such a beautiful, Colonial house furnished in the early 20th century style. Our guide Lavantina was local to Santiago, very knowledgeable, sorted any matter out for our holiday to work smoothly. Nothing was too much for her. Cox & Kings must be commended for the planning of the itinerary and their choice of Lavantina for the tour guide who was magnificent.
For me Chile was a dream for several years and special and now extraspecial. I cannot recommend this tour enough.
