Still: Secrets of War
Introduction
Children’s, youth and family films boast both successful domestic and international track records. Almost one quarter (23%) of all Dutch films released over the last ten years in The Netherlands were children’s,and family films. Together they drew almost half (45%) of the total number of visitors to Dutch films in Dutch cinemas. In 2013 the top 10 best performing Dutch films in the domestic box office included four films aiming at children, youth and families. Internationally the Dutch children’s, youth and family films are widely appreciated and acclaimed, underlined by many festival selections and awards.
Children’s films offer the youngest audience the opportunity to experience stories and themes related to their own world. They offer numerous opportunities to create related educational materials on contemporary, historical and universal themes. The Netherlands Film Fund considers children’s, youth and family films as one of it’s priorities. The following projects present an overview of the productions of Dutch children’s, youth and family films 2012-2014, supported by the Netherlands Film Fund. 3
