YEAR 2016 IN REVIEW After reaching a cinema visitor share of 18.8% the previous year, the Dutch share dropped to 12.3% in 2016. Mainly format driven commercial films suffered from audience decrease. Dutch arthouse and cross over films however managed to double their audience numbers and documentaries tripled theirs. Total revenues increased to € 579 million, fueled by a strong box office and VOD growth. Although no market data are registered, the significant VOD results are reached mainly through SVOD services. In this issue the Fund provides its own VOD turnover estimates that are provided in consultation with the sector, due to the lack of available transparent data. In 2016 the Netherlands Film Fund supported 666 out of 1370 applications with grants, investing a total of € 51.2 million. The share of total Fund support in released Dutch feature films increased from 34.8% to 41%. The Netherlands Production Incentive has boosted significant increases both in Dutch production spend and international production activity coming to the Netherlands. A recently published survey commissioned by the Fund measuring the period between July 2014 (when the Incentive became operational) and December 2016 revealed the Film Fund has supported 181 film projects with incentive grants, totalling almost € 42 million, which has led to Dutch production spend of € 198.8 million. The number of Dutch features released, reached 37 (2015: 46) with an average audience of 122,795, roughly the same level as the previous year. In 2016 Dutch films entered the competitions of renowned international film festivals such as Venice, Locarno, Toronto, Sundance and San Sebastian. 47 feature-length films were selected to one of the major international film festivals. These films were awarded with 7 film prizes and there were 3 prizes for persons. The number of selections of documentaries, animation films, cinematic experiment & shorts internationally even reached 160. These films were awarded with 16 prizes and there was one prize for a film maker. Also, for the third consecutive year, the admissions per capita in the Netherlands increased. Dutch people visited a cinema twice per person. Should you need any additional information about the Netherlands Film Fund or the Dutch film industry, please do not hesitate to contact us. 1.3 FINANCING OF DUTCH FEATURE FILMS RELEASED IN 2016 Production value of Dutch feature releases - € 97.3 million The 57 Dutch feature releases (including minority Dutch coproductions), of which 6 non-released films in 2016 cost € 97.3 million to make. The share of total Fund support increased from 34.8% to 41%. Remarkable is the drop in use of foreign tax incentives/economic funds from € 10,647 in 2015 to € 3,651 million in 2016. Next to the Film Fund, private investors, European funding and broadcasters (CoBO, Media Fund) contributed to the making of these films. 5.5 ADMISSIONS PER CAPITA The Dutch visit a cinema twice per year Compared to 2015 the admissions per capita in the Netherlands continued to increase in 2016. Dutch people visited a cinema twice per person in 2016. Most countries also increased or stabilized their per capita admissions. In the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium a slight decrease was noticed. According to Belgium the slight decrease can be linked to the terrorist attack in Brussels in march 2016, resulting in closing cinemas for a short period.

Mostly young audience in Dutch cinemas, but 40+ is rising Of all tickets sold in 2016, 24% was to 16 - 23 year olds while they only represent 10% of the Dutch population. Despite the dominance of youngsters in Dutch cinema, the 40+ age group is on the rise. This age group had a market share of 27% in 2000, in 2016 40+ accounted for 37% of all sold tickets compared to 41% by 12 – 29 year olds. Aging of the cinema audience is mainly due to an aging Dutch population. In total 9,5 million Dutch people visited the cinema in 2016. 20% of the population and 3,2 million people, also visited a Dutch film in the cinema. Dutch films are more popular among children and older age groups than among 16 to 54 year olds. Source: Bioscoopmonitor 2016, Dutch Film Research Foundation.
