Carter County History and Culture By: Serina Marshall Established in 1799, Carter County is rich in history and plenty of stories to tell. Named for Landon Carter, Carter County offers spectacular scenery, community and culture. Landon Carter was married to Elizabeth Carter, and they had a wonderful love story to tell in itself. Landon thought she was so incredibly special, he once told her that she should have a town named after her; and that he did. The city of Elizabethton was named after Elizabeth Carter so she could remain a part of Landon and his legacy forever. One key part of the history surrounding Carter County is Watauga Fort. Known as the Wataugans, seventy families resided on the Watauga River in a Fort that was nearly one thousand feet from the valley edge. This fort was built to provide protection from the Indians and potential war. The Watauga lease was formed with the Cherokee in 1772 for the half acre of land in the Tennessee foothills. However, in 1776 Dragging Canoe, and the British formed an alliance and the Cherokee were provided weapons by the British to invade Fort Watauga. The Cherokee then gave the settlers twenty days to give up their lands or enter attack. In July of 1776, after the settlers not heeding the warning given by the Cherokee, the Cherokee invaded parts of East Tennessee and ended up at the fort. The attack took nearly three hours and the Cherokee attempted to set the fort on fire, to no avail. Eventually, after approximately two weeks, the Cherokee finally lifted the siege and retreated. You can see the emotional retelling of the attack on the Wataugans at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in their annual summer production of “Liberty!” In addition to the intense history surrounding the Wataugans, there is also much history spread throughout the county. One such piece of history is at Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery where there is a headstone honoring the memory of those pioneer settlers that lost their lives defending their home and land. The headstone reads, “Buried here in unmarked graves are many pioneer settlers of this community.” And also, at the aforementioned Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park is an authentic replica of For Watauga that was opened by Governor Ray Blanton Page 4

These stories are needed to be told to tell of the brave, courageous and honorable persons that served our country. This city landmark stands with pride. Another display is The Monument, which can be found in the middle of Main Street. This monument stands for those that were killed in war, who sacrificed their lives for the better of the people. The Milestone Boulder is another part of history that is found at the Carter County Courthouse. This marks where the Watauga Association formed in 1772. Along Elk Avenue in downtown Elizabethton, sits a quaint and renewed coffee shop. The Coffee Company has been in business for twenty-two years and was formally owned by John and Lisa Bunn. Recently, Frankie and Travis Bailey took over the space and made it theirs. The Baileys rebranded the already popular Coffee Company and began moving it forward. The experience and feelings once you step in the doors onto the beautiful wood floors is one you cannot find at any brick and mortar stand alone building. This company is organic and authentic. One word to describe this company is “character”. Throughout the building, you will find remnants of its past life as a clothing store many years ago. From the glass counters in the dining room that were once used as display cases, to the aged wood floors and the refurbished shelving; history percolates through the building as much as the coffee does being made. “The space has become a home away from home for the community” says Frankie “We pride ourselves on excellence. It is handcrafted coffee with love.” One special feature provided is latte work done right on top of the latte you order. This adds character to your beverage, as
much as the modernized history adds character to the company. Previous owner John Bunn still provides the coffee for The Coffee Company. Doe River Roasters is right down the road and actually started within The Coffee Company itself. “John actually roasted the coffee right here in this space” explains Frankie “And he still provides it for the company.” If you are looking for coffee in other ways besides in a mug, you can also buy their coffee by the pound in decaffeinated, regular or flavored varieties. Not only does the coffee company serve coffee, but they also provide desserts, pastries and lunch; including their popular Reuben sandwich alongside a soup or salad. “All our food is fresh and we also offer organic and gluten free varieties” Frankie adds, “We have quality service and quality food. Our staff is also cross trained from barista to server to provide any need.” Lunch is served from 11am-3pm and also has a seasonal menu for every account. They also provide space for parties and events. If you are looking for a delicious lunch and a coffee made with love, The Coffee Company is the place for you.

Isaiah 117 House By: Serina Marshall
Behind a red door, you will find one of the most welcoming and loving places you could ever hope to experience. The Isaiah 117 House in Elizabethton offers a safe haven for children that have just been removed from their homes by DCS for various reasons. The purpose of this incredible house is to be a place where a child can come on transition day to play, make slime, order pizza and just be a kid on one of the most life changing days they will encounter.
homes, birthday and Christmas gifts, Girl Scouts, youth groups, and baseball teams throughout the community. One little girl raised $200 on her own for a Barbie camper. Through the love and selflessness of the town of Elizabethton, in just one year, Ronda Paulson was able to pay cash for the home. Everything was fully paid for; $90,000 in renovations, $13,000 for the backyard, Cannons gave $16,000 in free furniture, all closets and cabinets filled with clothing and food and the local fire department made a themed firefighter boys room. It was all fully funded and they had $75,000 in the bank; debt free.
The idea for the Isaiah 117 House came to the mind of Ronda Paulson as her and her husband were attending classes for foster parents in 2014. “For the child, they leave everything they have known on On June 19th 2018, the Isaiah 117 House officially the day of removal and are brought to a sterile office opened its doors. Thanks to the vision of Paulson within DCS” says Paulson, “But the DCS caseworkers and the acts of love and kindness by the community, do a wonderful job making the transition as easy as children would now be able to come straight to the possible for the child and let them know that they house for a few hours after being removed to bathe, are not in trouble.” The goal is to move the children snack, rest, play and most importantly, process what in transition into a more was happening. In January of 2017, Paulson began asking herself how to start a non-profit. She researched for the cause, and that same year, the dream took shape in the form of an actual house. Paulson found that she needed $75,000 for her dream and began talking to anyone that would listen about the non-profit idea. She asked the community, “What if we had a home for these children to come to?” and the community rallied around her and sprang into action to help raise the money needed. $7000 was raised in lemonade stands alone. More funds were raised by car shows, nursing
National Adoption Day is November 17th, and on that day in 2018, the Paulson’s adopted Isaiah’s full brother Eli as well at the age of three weeks. Altogether, the Paulson’s have four wonderful children; Sophie (16), Mac (13), Isaiah (4) and Eli (2). Because of Paulson and her incredible heart and spirit, more children like Isaiah and Eli will be given a second chance at family, love, childhood and a future. “Every Isaiah 117 House that opens will have a red door,” says Paulson. And we know that every child that walks through that door will be the luckiest kid there is.

TLC Community Center By: Serina Marshall
For twenty years, the TLC Community Center in Elizabethton has provided programs for those in need. In the last seventeen years, these amazing volunteers have been serving three meals per day to four hundred and twenty-five children in Carter County/Elizabethton and two meals per day for two hundred and sixty children in Bristol Tennessee and Bristol Virginia through their summer food program. Emergency food is also kept at the center for DCS or people in need that may call and request help.
years. You earn “mommy money” or “daddy dollars” to “buy” market items by going to work or other various opportunities. The mart has clothing, bottles, toys, diapers, wipes, pacifiers; anything a parent would need to take care of their child. There is also a beauty shop inside the center where volunteer hairstylists do hair for free. There are so many ways to take care of yourself and your child. The Center can also help parents with special needs children, including those with autism. The Center is sensory friendly and is adorned with wall paintings of various landmarks in Elizabethton, as well as actually standing replicas of the Covered Bridge and Monument. “Through these different sites, the children can get used to the town without the noises and people that can send them into sensory overload” points out Odom. There is also a TLC Town that children can venture into that includes miniature versions of a house, school, diner, church, vet office and grocery store. Sensory logo stickers are places on restaurants throughout Elizabethton to help with those sensory friendly needs of families and children.
The food process started by volunteers giving out sandwiches on the corner and it was a huge success. “The summer food program began by kids inside the schools talking about needing food” says Angie Odom of TLC, “After that, the program just happened.” Elizabethton isn’t the only city doing the summer food program. Bristol was added four years ago and is currently serving anywhere from two hundred and fifty to three hundred children with two meals per day. Another food program is “Food for the Multitude” where five churches in the area rotate Saturdays beginning at 9am and cook hot meals for anyone that may need The Center has a full-size it. “The food is carry-out, kitchen that is stocked full of so anyone can come and food and preparation items. get something to eat” says For twenty years, the TLC Community Center in The Center itself can also Elizabethton has provided programs for those in need. Odom, “There are no fees be used for birthday parties, at Food for the Multitude. fundraisers and meetings; as it has thirteen banquet Food programs are not the only services offered by the TLC Community Center. “We are the grand central of finding places for people to get help” explains Odom, “We offer direction and guidance on a case by case basis.” The TLC Center started in an old hospital as a crisis/pregnancy center for those who needed it. “We help through all stages, abortion to birth, with feeding and clothing” Odom states. The Center also assists with those parents who may be on drugs with HUGS, which is a health partner. There is also mentoring for private adoption. Inside the TLC Community Center, you will find anything one may need to get through tough times as a parent. There is a mommy mart, which is much like a little consignment shop, that has been running for twenty
tables and you pay by donation. The TLC Community Center has no federal or state funding and is always accepting donations by way of monetary, food, baby items, clothing, toys or time. Next door, there is a free daycare as well called Telemon, that can be utilized by those who may need it. The age range is six weeks to three years and they provide free diapers and food. The TLC Center also has a program called Bundles of Love, that occurs in the Fall. During this time, they provide hygiene products, hats, gloves, school supplies and non-perishable food items. The TLC Center is a wonderful place for anyone that may need a little extra help, support and love. Every day, they bring hope to many different lives and situations; and they don’t plan to stop anytime soon. CARTER COUNTY READERS’ CHOICE 2020
