My husband and I just spent the better part of a beautiful summer Sunday roaming the aisles of the local home-improvement store. Why? We were agonizing over door knobs. Which got me thinking, why is it that we spend so much time and effort and money shaping our material world? In his book “The Architecture of Happiness,” author Alain de Botton offers an explanation that makes sense to me. “In essence,” he writes, “what works of design and architecture talk to us about is the kind of life that would most appropriately unfold within and around them.” To de Botton, to describe a building as beautiful is about more than aesthetics; “it implies an attraction to the particular way of life this structure is promoting through its roof, door handles, window frames, staircase and furnishings,” he says. This issue is a celebration of beautiful architecture and design. So as we chose the Home of the Year (featured on page 124) and the professionals for this year’s list of Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers “ What works of design and (page 101), we kept de Botton’s words in mind. We’re drawn to the high country because of architecture talk to us about is the life we imagine we’ll lead here: We’ll step the kind of life that would unfold outside in the morning to watch the sun filter within and around them.” through the aspens, we’ll feel cozy when the rain from an afternoon storm raps on the roof, and in the evening we’ll stand at a wide window and watch as the sun disappears behind the mountains. A great mountain home will facilitate these experiences that we look forward to. Lacking the words to describe it, we may call its architecture and interiors “beautiful.” But what that feeling of beauty really is, as de Botton writes, is a sign that we’ve come upon a material articulation of our ideas of a good life.

LETTERS FROM THE SCBA FROM THE PRESIDENT

Clark Johnson PRESIDENT, SUMMIT COUNTY BUILDER’S ASSOCIATION

The Summit County Builders Association (SCBA) is bringing you 24 remarkable homes to tour in our 15th Annual Parade of Homes. Your admission to these homes directly supports The Summit Foundation. This well-respected grant-making organization funds more than 255 nonprofit organizations in the area. Through admission fees and corporate matching funds from SCBA members Apex Mountain Homes and Trilogy Partners, $72,929 has been contributed to The Summit Foundation over the past three years. SCBA is comprised of 200 member businesses whose employees live and work in the community. They take pride in bringing you many innovative products and energy-saving systems. Some of these innovative technologies may not be visible, so be sure to ask the builder’s representative about these features. Today, new homes are safer, more efficient, and more packed with popular features than ever. Safety—Technological advances mean that today’s homes are safer, because new homes take advantage of breakthroughs in building science. Most homes in the parade have advanced electrical systems, hardwired smoke detectors and fire-resistant construction details. Some have included sprinkler systems. Windows in patio doors and near stairways have tempered glass, which makes them less likely to cause injury if they break. Efficency—Watch for a larger array of products and materials to make a home more energyefficient. Many home-builders participate in programs like ENERGY STAR,® which promotes energy-efficient appliances. One of the latest movements in the building industry is the incorporation of sustainable building practices. Our local builders are siting homes to take maximum advantage of sunlight and shade, and using innovative products like active and/or passive solar systems, light-conserving windows, insulation, decking made from recycled materials, and reclaimed materials like dead standing timber and beetle-kill pine.

THE COMMITTEE

FROM THE CO-CHAIRS Welcome to the 15th annual Summit County Builders Association’s Parade of Homes. The builders of Summit County continue to perfect their craft as demonstrated in this year’s sampling of luxury homes. The “Wow” factor is ever-present and many of the homes feature sustainable technologies and products, fitting for a mountain home in a quaint county. From the ski hills of Keystone to a quiet suburban neighborhood in Frisco, this year’s homes showcase all that Summit County has to offer. We are excited to again be teaming up with The Summit Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the community through its grants, contributions and support of local organizations and programs. Each ticket sale enables the organization to continue its support of vital community endeavors. Front row: Melinda Fleming, Martha For your increased convenience, tickets this year will be available at three of the Netherton, Lynn Myers, Barbora Hulikova homes, online at mountainliving.com and also at the City Markets in Dillon, Erlebach. When it comes to building “green”, Apex Mountain Homes does more than accept the responsibility. The firm embraces the challenge. The Hart residence in Frisco is a beautiful example of this commitment to sustainability and demonstrates that homeowners needn’t sacrifice luxury when building to eco-friendly standards. The exterior of this home is crafted in classic Apex style to engage the surrounding views. Massive hand-hewn timbers of local beetle-kill wood are angled to echo the craggy slopes of nearby Royal Mountain, while natural dry-stacked moss rock reflects the grandeur of its exposed rock faces. Inside, natural stone, reclaimed hickory flooring and locally crafted alder cabinetry are not only beautiful, but also represent sustainable materials and practices. Eco-friendly wool carpet adds another natural, environmentally friendly element to the interior. While the home is luxurious in appearance, it is miserly in energy consumption and is a stellar example of sustainable building. The home earned so many points under the newly adopted Summit Sustainable Building Code that the plan-review fee was refunded by the town of Frisco. What’s more, the home tested 55 on the internationally recognized Home Energy Rating System (HERS), meaning the home is 45% more efficient than one built to typical code standards.

3,729 sq. ft. 5 bedrooms, 4 baths ENERGY STAR home 94% efficient heating system High-performance triple-pane windows Closed-cell spray-foam insulation ENERGY STAR appliances 50-year shingles Reclaimed hickory flooring Natural wool carpet Natural moss rock stone veneer HERS rating of 55 Heat Recovery Ventilation

Superb efficiency results not only from craftsmanship and design, but from the use of features like triple-pane windows, ENERGY STAR appliances, airtight sprayfoam insulation, and a heat-recovery ventilator. The practical scale of the home itself—which makes efficient use of space— makes all the difference. Nature has left us a spectacular inheritance in Summit County. This home is an example of how Apex Mountain Homes will complement, preserve and protect that green legacy. DIRECTIONS Just south of the Frisco Wal-Mart, turn west on Hawn Drive from Summit Boulevard (Highway 9). Continue two blocks, then turn right on Windflower Lane. At the stop sign,

DESCRIPTION The owners of this home wanted a warm and inviting mountain home in the woods where their family and friends could gather. Breckenridge Realty’s Kim Stevenson found the ideal lot to meet the owner/architect’s requirements: one with dense trees and a sloping terrain. The lot’s dense forest and privacy begged for outdoor spaces that would allow the family to enjoy that tranquility even if the weather would not cooperate, and so the design team created a covered deck that extends the indoor space to the outdoors; a stone fireplace removes the chill from the air. The owners wanted their home to feel as if it had already stood the test of time. Their vision was realized with reclaimed wood floors, a reclaimed wood ceiling in the master bedroom, the use of exterior stone material inside the home, distressed Douglas fir timbers, knotty alder cabinets, trim and doors, stones and granite, warm earth-tone colors, and attention to small details at every turn. The exterior design allows the home to exist in harmony with its natural setting.

During the conceptual design phase, input was given by family, friends, Marc Hogan and Tom Eble. Hogan provided constructive comments that enabled the owner to transition his schematic designs to BHH Partners. Tom Eble, President of Cabernet Construction, was chosen early in the design process served as a valuable resource for planning, design and construction. Cabernet Construction made the building process a wonderful experience, and the family appreciates the efforts of all the craftsmen who worked on the home. DESCRIPTION “Stone columns supporting wooden beams, the warmth and scent of a wood-burning fireplace and carefully framed views of green valleys and snow-topped peaks. A rustic mountain homage to F. L. Wright, a residence inspired by 1920s craftsman architecture. A home filled with light, music, art, laughter, and calm.” These inspired words from clients were interpreted and transformed through the design/build process by Trilogy Partners. And the result: the home that the owners of 581 Preston Way in Breckenridge had been dreaming of for a lifetime. The owners, who had been inspired by other Trilogy projects, charged the design and build team at Trilogy Partners with all aspects of planning, design and construction. With the assistance of their design partners, Trilogy helped the owners achieve a home perfectly sited to capture stunning valley and mountain views. A rustic stone fireplace anchors the living room. Two master suites were a must, as was a romantic owners’ bathing suite and a gourmet kitchen designed for multiple chefs because the owners enjoy cooking together. Because this home above all was a place to gather, there is plenty of room for family

and friends to unite during the holidays to ski, watch a movie, cook a meal, and enjoy one another’s company. A place from which to appreciate the high country, to watch the sun set, the snow fall, the seasons change. A home like this is not built in a day but in many. Much thought and energy are required, just the right balance of creativity and practicality, and, above all, patience. And in the end, as with all Trilogy Projects, the result is something uniquely reflective of the owners, and lasting. On display now and for many years at 581 Preston Way in The Highlands at Breckenridge.

A flagstone entry walk and winding flagstone and moss-rock stairway leads to the front door, displaying some of the many high-quality details and finishes featured throughout the home. Just inside, a large open entry reveals a handcrafted log stairway that leads to the home’s five levels. Up just a half-flight from the entry is a small library and study. Beyond a pair of French doors is the master suite, which features a moss-rock fireplace, master bath with large double vanity, towel-warming drawer, whirlpool tub and steam shower. Through another pair of French doors is a study. The master suite also features a spacious closet complete with custom built-in cabinetry and access to a private, flagstone deck with great mountain views. A half-flight above the master bedroom is a loft that overlooks the entry and spacious great room, and offers a 3/4 bath and is ideal for accommodating extra guests. Just two steps down from the entry is the great room, which has spectacular views of the forest and mountains. The structural logwork is massive but the space has the very comfortable feel of a true mountain home, thanks to its 22-foot-high moss-rock fireplace, 6' x 6' structural ridge skylight, knotty pine ceilings, wide-plank hickory flooring and radius windows with motorized roll-down blinds. The kitchen has been finished with custom knotty alder cabinetry and heavy log support columns at each end of the island.

The dining room, which has an atrium door that leads out to a covered deck with a cozy fireplace, is adjacent to the kitchen and overlooks the great room. Behind the kitchen there is a powder bath which features a copper pedestal sink and slate floors, and a utility room, complete with pantry cupboards, an additional refrigerator and front-loading washer and dryer on pedestals. Just off of the entry way is a mud room, which features custom-built knotty alder cubbies and a bench, along with another laundry room and the entry to the heated garage. DESCRIPTION What is it that truly defines a dream home? Is it lavish and luxurious finishes, abundant amenities or sprawling mountain views? This unique home has it all and takes it a step further, focusing not only on quality finishes but also on what lies below the surface. Energy efficiency and sustainability are important, and this home proves that you can be a good steward of our planet while enjoying the benefits of the high-end, quality custom finishes of a mountain home. This graceful home combines a beautiful, environmentally responsible design with technology that makes it even more sustainable. Working together with the owner and designers, RJB Development was able to construct a home that utilizes a “house as a system” approach. By looking at the home as a whole and realizing that no one system was enough, the various unique “micro systems” were brought together to function as a high efficiency, beautifully constructed home. The home utilizes water-saving features such as low-flow plumbing fixtures and smart irrigation systems that water the lawn and plants using an underground drip/micro irrigation system. The home is constructed from engineered, environmentally friendly materials, with radiant-heated floors and an efficient lifetime composition and metal roof. Walls contain closed-cell spray-foam insula-

tion, which seals the envelope of the home and limits unwanted air infiltration. European tilt-and-turn low-E2 windows reflect heat and harmful ultraviolet light while providing ample natural ventilation. With the touch of a switch, motorized Rolladen security shutters can automatically shade the windows to keep rooms cool. The HEPA whole-house air-circulation system helps maintain a healthy environment and a high level of indoor air quality. All the appliances are ENERGY STAR rated for better efficiency, from the Viking refrigerator to the low-water-consumption dishwasher. What’s more, this 4,000-plus-square-foot custom home is powered by 45 solar panels. The Sanyo solar-photovoltaic (PV) panels comprise a 9.0-kilowatt system that feeds electricity to the grid and effectively spins the home’s meter backwards during Colorado’s abundant sunny days. Tying together these unique systems is the home-automation system. The automation infrastructure is set up with the capability to efficiently monitor and control lighting, blinds, shutters, irrigation controls, thermostats, the security system, audio and video, weather monitoring, elevator and other components. It is the hope of all who have helped put this masterpiece together that you’ll have the opportunity to visit this unique home that is an example of what meticulous planning and quality construction can accomplish.

The products at Myers & Company do not come off the shelf but are uniquely designed and made to fit the client’s individual needs and ideals. The process is simple. “Contractors, homeowners, architects and designers come in and talk with our design and marketing team,” explains CFO, Michael Glen. “Together, they’ll look at our portfolio and samples. Depending on the scope of the project, conceptual design drawings are created, followed by detailed drawings and/or 3-D modeling. Once the customer is satisfied with the vision, the project is fabricated and installed.” Myers & Company is a full-service steel operation, fabricating and erecting the structural steel frames and components of the building as For more information, please visit myersandco.com

“Our craftspeople are artists,” says Katie Mortensen, president of Naytura Designs, which specializes in the design and creation of custom hand-forged iron, bronze and sculptured glass chandeliers. “Whatever medium they’re working in, from glass to iron to bronze, they’re makers of architectural art.” Naytura Designs prides itself on attention to detail. “Our pieces are not mass-produced or made overseas; they’re crafted in Colorado,” Mortensen explains. “Our bronzes are threedimensional and have exquisite detail, and nothing is laser cut.” When working with clients, personal attention is of paramount importance to this Alamo, California-based company. Design sessions are always encouraged so that the customer’s vision may be brought to light.

“We’re a small company, so we’re able to work together from start to finish,” Mortensen says. “The better we get to know each other, the more trust there is. It makes it easy to move forward.” In addition to chandeliers, the Naytura line extends to sconces, etched glasswork, handhammered fireplace screens and antler light fixtures. Design details for high-end projects, from mountain-contemporary homes in the Rockies to tropical hideaways in Hawaii, are inspired by nature. The Ocean Series, for instance, features details like sea turtles and tropical fish, while the Mountain Series often incorporates pinecones, elk and deer. A SENSE OF REDISCOVERY OUR 2009 HOME OF THE YEAR TAKES A FRESH APPROACH TO TRADITIONAL EXPECTATIONS FOR A ROCKY MOUNTAIN LODGE IN BIG SKY COUNTRY

STORY BY NORMAN KOLPAS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUDREY HALL

THIS PAGE: “The more dramatic the view in a living room is, the more you need something solid to hold you in the room,” says architect Larry Pearson. “This fireplace is so organized and solid that it literally anchors you with such an incredible view at the end of the room.” Interior designer Charles de Lisle loves the playful nature of the room’s two big lamps, which he had made from tree-shaped cast-iron hitching posts from the 1880s. 125

Montana’s Big Sky country while also reinterpreting the local vernacular. OPPOSITE: In the home’s formal dining area, interior designer Charles de Lisle paired a simple solid-oak pedestal table with a show-stopping Venetian glass “antler” chandelier.

ARCHITECTURE PEARSON DESIGN GROUP INTERIOR DESIGN THE CHARLES DE LISLE WORKSHOP CONSTRUCTION LOHSS CONSTRUCTION

Rising from a massive tawny-hued foundation of local Harlow stone to a veritable forest of majestic roof timbers, the six-bedroom, three-story lodge in The Yellowstone Club seems at first glance to have grown organically from its natural surroundings in Big Sky, Montana. This, undoubtedly, is a residence worthy of consideration as Mountain Living’s Home of the Year. What elevates the home above the rest, however, is the many ways in which its architectural details, finishes and furnishings subtly reinterpret and sometimes even challenge the local mountain dwelling vernacular while staying true to its heritage and spectacular location. Indeed, the original source of the home’s inspiration was the setting itself: approximately five hillside acres with 270-degree panoramas of pine-clad peaks and snow-covered resort slopes. Principal architect Larry Pearson, AIA, of Pearson Design Group in Bozeman, along with several investing partners, began the project as a spec home. They were drawn, he explains, by the lot’s “great southerly exposure, its breathtaking views, and the privacy it offered within an incredible mountain resort community.” >> 127

NEAR RIGHT: “The colors in the master bedroom almost don’t match: terracotta floral bedding, dried-orange-peel drapes, caramel cowhide headboard,” says de Lisle. “Yet they work together, and add up to a great vignette.” BELOW: The master suite’s sitting room is a quiet, comfortable place to begin and end the day. OPPOSITE: A table, chair and vintage rug lend an air of elegance to the master bath.

That combination proved irresistible. Before the house was even fully framed, a Bay Area family with two young children bought the property as a second home. They, in turn, enlisted San Francisco-based interior designer Charles de Lisle of The Charles de Lisle Workshop, who had already proven himself simpatico with their style on another home. “I had never done a house in the mountains before,” says de Lisle, “so I took it as a chance to come up with a fresh approach to that language.” A harmonious dialogue soon developed. Pearson’s faithful yet fresh interpretations of mountain lodge architectural traditions dovetailed perfectly with de Lisle’s eclectic approach to creating comfortable rooms that feel as if they have evolved over time and, he says, offer family and guests alike “a sense of adventure and discovery” that make the interiors as intriguing as the views are thrilling. Take, for example, the interior space where so much of the home’s socializing and relaxing take place: the living room, crowned by a 25-foot-tall log post-and-beam ceiling. Here, wide-plank white oak floors and an 18-foot-tall fireplace of the same Harlow stone featured on the exterior capture all of the majesty of a grand retreat, “giving a sense of place to the whole building,” says Pearson. The surfaces and their assembly are also quietly simplified and streamlined, without the fussiness or grandiosity that might have been added in a bygone era. To this environment, de Lisle added “appropriately big-scaled furniture, but not overstuffed seating like you might expect. I wanted it to feel right for casual family life.” Above the table in the formal dining area, he playfully complemented the living room’s simple hand-forged iron chandeliers, which look like they’re made from antique barrel hoops, with an “antler” chandelier of clear Venetian glass. “I think it’s fantastic,” adds Pearson, who salutes the “sense of discovery” such design choices brought to the space. >>

In the daughter’s cheerful room (below, right), the “rusted iron” bed frame is made of wood that’s been carefully stained to trick the eye.

DESIGNING TO SCALE

When a house’s architecture is as grandly scaled as this Home of the Year’s, special attention must be paid to making sure that the furnishings harmonize with the dimensions of their surroundings. “The bold scale excited me, so I just started playing with that,” says interior designer Charles de Lisle. Herewith, some tips for keeping things in proportion:

Customize when necessary. It can be difficult to find ready-to-use furniture big enough to match the setting. De Lisle commissioned key custom-designed pieces, such as a 14-foot-long sofa that faces the living room’s massive stone fireplace. Simplify for focus. Though the scale is large, detailing doesn’t have to be. The formal dining area’s solid-

oak pedestal table, which expands from a circle seating six to an oval for 14 people, was kept absolutely clean-lined and simple. “I wanted the Spanish tall-back chairs and the Venetian glass chandelier to be the story in this area,” says de Lisle. Don’t ignore the small stuff. Regardless of the interior dimensions, de Lisle never forgot that small details help bring a home to life. “I spent lots of time going to flea markets, junk stores, and antique malls,” he says, “to find the kinds of fun, random stuff that feels like heritage pieces.”

131

home of the year

THIS PAGE: “Most of the building materials you see come from our region, including the beautiful stonework in Harlow stone; the large-diameter standing-dead lodgepole pine logs; aged boards salvaged from buildings in the area, and handsplit cedar shakes from the northwest that weather and gray, giving a sense of place to the whole building,” says Pearson.

Still more adventurous discoveries await in the home’s private quarters. De Lisle bestowed upon the daughter’s and son’s bedrooms a feeling that they were furnished with beloved family hand-medowns. The rooms feature antique-style linens and dressers, colorful throw rugs, and a wooden bed frame stained to look like rusted iron in her room, another constructed from rough-hewn logs in his. The master suite features grander but no less rustic-feeling touches like a caramel-colored cowhide headboard, tangerine-striped draperies, his-and-hers vanity walls with herringbone-patterned wood paneling, and dual sinks fashioned from two-century-old Italian terracotta planters. Combined with such architectural touches as log doorway frames that seem fashioned from still-living trees, the result, says Larry Pearson, feels at once “rustic, sophisticated and luxurious.” Of course, neither architect nor designer let the attention stray very long from the Home of the Year’s paramount luxury: its surroundings. From the main house, a pathway meanders downhill to a pond and a separate guest cabin—what Pearson describes as “a discovery yet to happen.” And the main home’s stairway offers its own special destination, ascending from its lowermost massive stone walls, through ever-moreairy timberwork, to an uppermost tower room offering breathtaking views in every direction. Furnished by de Lisle to resemble a pioneer’s cabin, the little room is complete with a wall-mounted deer head. Evident here, as throughout the dwelling, is an ever-lighthearted yet practical counterpoint between past and present. “It is definitely a historic lodge in form,” observes Pearson, “but with a much more playful style that responds to the needs and lifestyle of a modern family.”

BELOW, RIGHT: In the living room, wide windows look out onto a separate guest cabin, private pond and beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery.

A SENSE OF DISCOVERY The Home of the Year’s vast surroundings, extensive grounds, and expansive floor plan gave architect Larry Pearson, AIA, the chance to provide owners and guests alike with ample opportunities to “discover new views, new places, and new character as they move through the house.” Some highlights: A breathtaking entry. “The house’s entry room is intimate in scale,” says Pearson. “Then, you turn right, walk around a huge log column into the living room, and suddenly realize you’ve arrived at something much grander as you take in the panoramic views of gorgeous mountains, forests and ski slopes.” Rising to new heights. On the home’s lowest daylighted level, the staircase begins completely embraced by stone walls, “like the foundation of an old castle,” says Pearson. One level up, it becomes a construction of “hewn planks and heavy timbers recycled from regional barns.” At last, it reaches the home’s tower room, which offers 360-degree panoramas of the Rockies. A fresh destination. Windows in the living room and the master suite alike offer tantalizing glimpses

downhill of two small buildings comprising a 1,200-square-foot guest cabin beside a pond. “From the main house,” says Pearson, “you walk through terraces down to the cabin, making it a great destination for a cookout, a sleepover, a summer afternoon swim, or winter ice-skating.” ●

Blurred Boundaries A COLORADO RANCH HOUSE CELEBRATES ITS MOUNTAIN VIEWS WITH LIVING SPACES THAT EXTEND TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS

STORY BY HEATHER J. PAPER

136

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF SCROGGINS

THIS PAGE: The unassuming nature of this Colorado home belies its inspiring plan, both indoors and out. Architect Rich Carr, of CCY Architects, wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the greatest challenges in creating this residence, he says, was balancing the humbleness appropriate for this mountain setting with a design that was artfully inspiring, too. 137

138

OPPOSITE: The red front door is an immediate clue to this home’s accent hue. It’s one of several architectural elements that echo the reds found in the owners’ collection of Native American art and on nearby shed barns. THIS PAGE: Many of the building materials used inside this residence would feel equally at home outside. Even the barn-style door that can close off one wing makes you think twice about whether you’re indoors or out.

ARCHITECTURE CCY ARCHITECTS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN WORKSHOP, INC. CONSTRUCTION NEW AGE HOMES

In the high country, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to want to bring their surroundings into their homes. Nor is it unusual for them to extend their living spaces to the outdoors, where they can take in the views and the fresh mountain air. But for this Colorado mountain home near Aspen, architect Rich Carr and landscape architect Richard Shaw took those two concepts to an entirely new level, creating interior/exterior relationships so seamless that it’s hard to tell where one stops and the other begins. It didn’t hurt that these two professionals have collaborated on projects for 20-some years. Or that the homeowners were so enthusiastic about the natural beauty of the site; the home’s agrarian setting was a prime motivator for the overall design, says Shaw. In fact, the first thing you notice about this residence is that it’s not, well, noticeable. Slung low on the land, it’s quiet and simple, befitting the owners’ low-key lifestyle. “The property itself is unique,” Carr says of the 35-acre ranch situated within a larger development. “It’s the furthest one toward the mountains and the view—very pastoral, with no development to the south or west.” Taking full advantage of the spectacular site, Carr designed a contemporary ranch home that stretches out on and engages the land, creating living spaces both indoors and out while staying true to his firm’s basic values. “We don’t really have a signature style, just a philosophy of creating structures that fit with the tradition of place, that are both inspiring and unexpected,” he explains. That “inspiring and unexpected” point of view plays out in myriad ways. The home’s exterior cedar siding, for instance, carries through to the interior walls. But inside and out, the material is used in a variety of ways—horizontally, vertically, even gapped to allow soft dappled light to filter inside. The latter treatment, says Carr, is reminiscent of barns and outbuildings that were built in the West for hundreds of years. 140

OPPOSITE: By keeping furnishings simple, the focus stays squarely on the architectural details—and the equally impressive views. THIS PAGE: For Rich Carr, thinking from a sustainable point of view is a given, evidenced by the log columns and beams used throughout this home. At the same time, he says, “materials need to feel like they are a good fit in the West, and will withstand the test of time.” 141

THIS PAGE: An Arizona sandstone floor begins in the living room, then moves through slidingglass doors and out to the terrace, where the oversized stones are interspersed with soft ground cover. OPPOSITE: Throughout much of the house, windows reach all the way up to the roof, bringing in more natural light and further engaging the magnificent landscape. 142

Striking red pop-out window bays also enter the indoor/outdoor conversation, the architectural elements relating to the reds found in the owners’ collection of Native American art, as well as those of nearby shed barns. But perhaps most apparent in terms of bringing the outdoors in—and vice versa—is the creative use of Arizona sandstone. Not only was the flooring used throughout most of the interior but, says Carr, “it slides right out the doors, creating terraces.” “There’s a direct connection to the topography, even though there is quite a bit of a grade,” says Shaw. “We always try to find a way to make a level transition to match the natural grade.” Each outdoor living area has its own sense of place and purpose. The north courtyard, with a majestic fireplace, is formed by a U-shaped section of the house and underscored by oversized pieces of stone, some measuring 6 feet long. But, points out Shaw, the floor of this terrace is as much about the stones as the soft groundcover between them. Magnificent sliding-glass doors allow access from this space to the main living space; opposite them, another set leads back out to the south terrace. Take a left, and you’re in the more-shaded oasis court; take a right, and you’re on your way to the pool. “The challenge was in finding a way to bring all of the pieces together, to form the terraces in a way that was not presumptuous or overwhelming,” says Shaw. “There’s a subtlety in the [surrounding] grasslands, so even in the more formal areas we used soft colors and a mix of plant materials. The challenge was to make the house feel like it belonged on this piece of land.” Carr couldn’t agree more. In designing any project, he says, “you have to go beyond stylistic influences. It’s just as important to listen to the land.” ●

NATURAL BEAUTY Although stunning mountain vistas were a given for this contemporary ranch home, landscape architect Richard Shaw of Design Workshop found a way to enhance them. It was crucial, he felt, to connect each of the interior rooms to the longdistance view. “People are often intent on seeing everything in the distance,” he says, “but we thought it was important to create interest in the foreground, to modify the view just a little from every room.”

Vertical To provide a sense of balance for the horizontal mountain range in the distance, vertical elements were introduced by adding strategically placed trees, including tall narrow-leaf cottonwood, quaking aspen, Colorado blue spruce and ponderosa pine. Natural It’s no coincidence that the newly planted trees look like they’ve always been there. From wide swaths of native grasses that move in the wind and “Gro-Low” sumac interspersed here and there, to Rocky Mountain columbine, larkspur, hosta and Woods’ rose, each plant was carefully selected and placed to look as if it sprung up quite naturally.

143

THIS PAGE & OPPOSITE: This Telluride house follows the contours of the land, resulting in subtle changes in elevation. Varying roof lines and ceiling treatments create separation between rooms in the open floor plan. In the two-story entry (above), the eye is drawn up to the strong lines of steel railings and dark wood ceiling beams.

145

J

on Dahl may have 30 years of experience framing complicated custom houses, but you won’t find many right angles or squared spaces in the home he recently built for his family in Telluride. “With Jack [architect Jack Snow of RKD Architects], everything is skewed and twisted, walls flared and angled,” says Jon. “That’s what makes the house interesting and fun.” The 5,200-square-foot house is a subtle sculpture of two wedge-shaped forms connected by a two-story bridge that floats above ground. “This structure is all about dynamic spaces and a place for social gathering,” says Snow, who designed the house around the big, open kitchen that Jon’s wife, Terryl, specified. “I like open spaces, but nothing too massive,” she says. “We wanted something streamlined and simple.” A continuous flow of space begins at the two-story entry and moves through the main living area. “There is a lot of variation in the ceiling and rooflines that defines the spaces,” Snow says. “Something changes all the time.” Because he worked with the natural shape of the land, the house has many levels separated by just a few steps. Built along the contours of an aspen-covered hillside, the house is perfectly aligned with spectacular views of Telluride’s iconic Mt. Wilson. Snow designed a geometric series of windows, rather than great expanses of glass, to frame the scenery with picture-perfect precision. Whether oriented to far mountain peaks or close-up aspen groves, every room has a view. Jon built the house to be low maintenance and energy efficient—“very clean and green,” he says. Terryl selected the finishes, colors and furnishings with her discerning eye for contemporary design. The sleek materials are compatible with the linear architecture—bamboo and concrete flooring, a tile-and-steel fireplace, smooth wood beams, clean metal railings. The furniture has similar contemporary lines, and the colors are neutral and serene, with limited pops of color for emphasis. “We tried to pull in a European/Asian feel rather than a rustic mountain look,” says Jon. “This is a very soothing house.” Although more refined than rugged, the architecture still speaks the ranching vernacular of the region, with a modern twist. “The exterior materials—stone walls, barnwood-type siding and metal roofing—are consistent with the ranch look, but the subtly distorted geometry gives the house a contemporary feeling,” says Snow. “My goal was to show that nothing else could have been built here. That’s what makes a custom home.”

Clerestory windows allow plenty of southern light to filter inside the family room, brightening the space. A vivid orange leather sofa complements the golden aspen leaves seen outside, connecting the indoors and outdoors, while a glass exterior door offers a more literal connection. A striped rug pulls all the colors of the room together and softens the sleek concrete floors. 147

148

Master Bath The large master bath (below) is big and bright, with nature-inspired hues. A random pattern of 4-inch Ann Sacks glass tiles in the shower imbues the room with fresh green color, while bamboo cabinetry keeps things light and airy. The pewter-hued concrete floors have comfortable radiant heating, ideal for chilly winter mornings, while chocolate-colored concrete countertops add visual warmth. A perfectly positioned window bathes the vanities in natural light and is aligned with the glass shower door. Plumbing fixtures by Kohler, Hansgrohe and Jason.

COLOR CONCEPTS With a home as stylized as this one, color can make or break the clean, contemporary look. “I was tempted to do more color on the walls but held back,” says homeowner Terryl Dahl. “With a house this big and open, space needs to flow from room to room and so do the colors.” Contrast Terryl livened up neutral materials and soaring spaces with high contrast: ebony-stained kitchen cabinets and wood ceiling beams play off light bamboo floors and natural spruce ceilings (opposite); a dark gray steel shaft and concrete tiles contrast with pale tile on the fireplace. Terryl bridged this light/dark energized backdrop with fresh green walls that flow from the kitchen through the dining and living rooms. In other areas of the house, light tan walls blend seamlessly with the natural bamboo flooring.

Discipline A carefully edited selection of bright colors adds just enough pop—an orange leather sofa in the family room, multi-colored striped rugs, and green tiles in the master bath. Pattern is kept to a minimum, and textures are smooth and sleek. ●
