SLHL HELLO
IT’S A
Wonderful LIFE YOU KNOW THAT PERSON
COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
who starts listening to Bing Crosby crooning “White Christmas” just as soon as the last trick-or-treater has grabbed the final Hershey’s bar? That’s me. I can’t wait to throw myself into the season. I love everything about that magical time between Halloween and New Year’s Day. The trees, aglow with their warm, fiery hues, are slowly starting to surrender their glory, leaving perfect winter silhouettes in their place. My favorite fuzzy pink sweater (which my kids think makes me look like Ralphie from A Christmas Story in his bunny costume) is again front-andcenter in my closet. And I’m already rummaging foodnetwork.com for tasty new dishes for my family’s annual Christmas Eve extravaganza. There’s just something about all the chaos, the shopping the cooking and the decorating that makes me feel all warm inside – crazy, but happy. We hope that this issue of SLHL helps put you in this same festive, warm and happy mood and gives you a reason to take a moment, slow down and savor each and every page. Our urban Christmas house (page 32) is truly a holiday masterpiece. Just wait till you see what these University City homeowners do each year to make the magic of the season come alive for their family and friends. Double Take (page 24) showcases two delightful tablescapes that will inspire you to make the kids’ table in your home a whimsical wonderland. You won’t want to miss our Toss a Party either (page 28). A chic, urban loft is the spectacular setting for a holiday soiree catered by our downtown culinary gem, Mosaic – Modern Fusion Cuisine. And the glorious wreaths designed by several of your favorite local florists (page 48) are sure to give you plenty of ideas to make your entryway one to be noticed. On behalf of everyone at SLHL, we wish you the happiest of holiday seasons and a New Year filled with the joys of home and family. And, as always, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to add a peaceful pause to your busy day. With every good wish,

The
Kids’ Table
WHIMSICAL AND FUN, THESE THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS INSPIRED TABLESCAPES WILL HAVE THE LITTLE ONES CLAMORING FOR A SEAT!
BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE MATHEIS
Oh,
to be banished to the kids’ table! What was once an afterthought when decorating for the holidays is fast becoming a place to make your inner kid shine. Kay Wallace, owner of F.O.B Saint Louis, and her talented staff of floral designers, Pam Zimmer and Patty Kent, together with store manager Pat Ivey, have created two enchanting holiday tables that are sure to delight any child. “You don’t have to spend a bundle to bring a smile to a child’s face,” says Kay. “It’s easy to get a great-looking table that’s affordable and fun.”
For Thanksgiving, the designers played with an American Indian theme, covering the table in chocolate brown burlap tied on the corners with raffia and feathers. Three large terra-cotta pots covered with brown kraft paper fringed like a tribal dress and filled with colorful feathers, wheat sheaves and a spray of autumn branches are a unique focal point with lots of mini pumpkins dotting the table. Paper candy corn placemats are the perfect spot for doodling with the colorful crayons scattered about. And simple headbands made from kraft paper and feathers are an extra-special touch and make great place cards. For a fun take-home gift, the designers have added darling ceramic pumpkin treasure boxes with a special surprise inside at each spot.

Feathers in an explosion of autumn hues are eye-catching and a unique focal point. Left: American Indian headbands mark each place setting, with a ceramic pumpkin treasure box as a special take-home surprise. The headbands could also be a fun project for kids to make themselves. Simple, classic white china from the Mary Carol Home collection lets the fall colors shine.

Above: Santa himself would be hard-pressed to have a more delightful Christmas table! Colorful candies fill five towering apothecary jars to the brim, while traditional reds and greens, accented with black and white, create a tablescape that pops. It’s the little extras, like gifts at each spot, tiny topiaries, holiday treasure boxes, steaming mugs of hot chocolate and Santa hats draped on the chairs, that make this kids’ table such a success.

This Christmas table is truly a child’s dream come true! Towering apothecary jars, adorned with plaid bows and winter greenery and filled to the brim with candies of all kinds, give little ones a reason to finish their dinners – quickly! Traditional holiday reds and greens, with a smattering of black and white checks, pop off the table and make it larger-than-life to a child’s eyes. “It’s all about making it fun for the kids,” says Kay. “I love Pam and Patty’s idea of using square mirrors, trimmed with a ribbon ruffle, as placemats,” she adds. “Kids like to look at themselves and make funny faces. It gives them something else to do while they wait for the turkey.” Small gifts topped with huge green bows and candy canes await the guests at each place setting. Tiny topiaries, Christmas treasure boxes, steaming mugs of hot chocolate and Santa hats on every chair complete this fanciful wonderland. Magical, whimsical and an unbelievable place to eat your veggies – that’s what the holiday kids’ table is all about these days. Kinda makes you wish you were 6 again!

And when that Friday happens to be in the middle of the holiday season, well, you just hope you get an invitation! “I love my friends,” says Tom, “and having a party is just an excuse to get everyone together.” Tom and his wife, Ellyn, moved from their suburban West County home five years ago to the ultra-chic, high-rise Printers Lofts downtown. “We have truly embraced our urban lifestyle,” they say, “and have met some of our dearest friends here at the Lofts.” So, with the holidays upon them, Tom and Ellyn were eager to gather their best buds together once again, this time for an amazing fete catered by their downtown neighbor, Mosaic – Modern Fusion Cuisine. “My number one piece of advice when throwing a party,” offers Ellyn, “is to have good food and drinks. That’s why we chose Mosaic. We knew they could bring the same excellence that we experience at the restaurant to our home.” And with the spectacular St. Louis skyline twinkling in the background, Tom and Ellyn sipped wine and mingled with their guests as Mosaic’s Chef/Owner Claus Schmitz and Executive Chef Ben Lester created magic in their kitchen. “We have several preset catering menus,” explains Chef Claus, “but we are always happy to customize a menu for a homeowner.” When preparing for a party, Tom and Ellyn prefer a simple approach. “Neither food nor décor need to be over-the-top,” they advise. “It’s really all about making your guests feel comfortable.” And their guests couldn’t be happier. “Tom and Ellyn’s parties have a ‘mi casa es su casa’ feel,” explains their friend Bob. “You always feel at home here.” That being said, the host and hostess were glad to be able to rely on Mosaic to make this holiday get-together something special. “We knew that Chef Claus would produce a ‘wow’ presentation of the delicious hors d’oeuvres we chose to serve,” say Tom and Ellyn. The award-winning chef also included a delectable assortment of hearty red wines to enhance the flavors of his outstanding appetizers. “We really love red wines,” say Tom and Ellyn, “and so do our friends. Mosaic provided us with several wonderful vintages to enjoy.” And so, with a glass of robust red in hand, this warm and vivacious couple greeted their guests this holiday season and raised a toast to fun times, continuing friendships — and of course, great food and wine!

Q +A
Is it common for projects to involve a collaboration of craftsmen? Collaboration is key. Some of our finest productions have been created by a team of craftsmen, such as Todd Kinnikin of Eureka Forge, Ben Moll of Stone Fabricators and Bill Stack of Koch Brothers Decorating. What is the process from start to finish in regard to the custom work you do? The process usually starts with a meeting with the builder, homeowner and designer to get a “feel” for the home. We then begin making material selections and plans, which we will then review for code and structural issues, engineer accordingly, and then transpose into a 3D drawing. When approved, we rough in the staircase as a “foundation” during the framing stage of the home and prepare to begin fabricating the staircase from a wide selection of raw lumbers. During the home’s finishing stages, all curved and complicated staircase features are manufactured on state-of-the-art machinery and assembled at the home. What have been some of your favorite projects? A builder in Florida came to us with a blank slate and wanted us to design the home’s entire interior stair and millwork package. Together with the designer, we created a fabulous interior that helped to sell this rather

Designer Sketch large, expensive spec home quickly. Another favorite project was a creative and challenging double-stacked elliptical floating staircase. What options do homeowners have in regard to custom woodwork in their homes? We have one of the most diverse offerings of stair and millwork options in St. Louis. We make our own moldings, custom interior and exterior doors, stair parts, bookcases, mantels and library paneling. We even grind our own knives so custom patterns and/or matching existing molding profiles during remodels are easy. In addition, we have an impressive lineup of partner vendors that can be found on our websites (www.kirkwoodhomegallery .com and www.kstair.com). What should homeowners ask when seeking a team of woodworking experts? The team they choose should have a clear vision of their project, provide a detailed presentation and be able to design, engineer, build and/or resource the woodworking projects necessary to make their home unique. See page 70 for design resources.

was the night before Christmas, and the house overflowed with dozens of guests coming in from the cold. The champagne was bubbling, the candles afire, the excitement was building higher and higher. The halls were all decked with ribbons and bows, garlands and ornaments – the amount of work showed. Gingerbread houses, holiday fare, presents galore, each wrapped with care. A towering tree with 6,000 lights. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. For Jim and Maralin Fredericks, Christmas Eve is something they dream about all year long. Having hosted this special night for 20 years, ever since their daughter, Jaimeson, now a college student at Tulane Univeristy, was small, Jim and Maralin have taken great pride and joy in making the night before Christmas magical and memory-filled. “It’s not unusual for us to have 50 or 60 people here on Christmas Eve,” says Maralin. “We always say, ‘The more the merrier,’ and

welcome friends, as well as family, into our home.” Aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins make the sentimental journey “home” to Jim and Maralin’s each year to be a part of the celebration. “When Jaime was little,” Maralin remembers, “my parents used to spend the night, and Jaime would crawl into bed with them when everyone had left.” Excited, but sleepy, Jaime would finally nod off and loved having her grandparents there in the morning to Above: Jaimeson relaxes with Airedales, Scout and Boo, in the “Penguin Room,” aptly named for its array of Christmas decorations with a penguin theme. “I started collecting penguins a long time ago and now have enough to adorn our mantel’s massive garland and each little tree in this room,” says Maralin. Large sugar pinecones from Lake Tahoe interspersed in the garland are a dramatic, yet natural, touch. A sophisticated palette of taupes and brick reds are the perfect neutral backdrop for adding traditional Christmas hues. Gorgeous arched doorways lead to a game room. see what presents Santa had brought. “It’s all about making memories,” says Maralin. “That’s what Jim and I have always tried to do on Christmas.” Starting the first of November, the Fredericks begin transforming their classic urban home into a Christmas fairyland, so it’s ready when Jaimeson comes home from college for Thanksgiving. “We still love to experience the excitement in her eyes when Jaimeson sees the house all decked out for the holidays,” Marilin adds. Creating Christmas at the Fredericks’, however, is no simple feat. “Our 12-foot tree takes two solid days to decorate,” says Maralin. With each individual branch wrapped in sparkling white lights and adorned with meaningful ornaments, the tree is a wonder to behold. “Jim and I enjoy collecting ornaments,” Maralin explains. “We travel quite a bit and are always on the lookout for new additions. Many of our ornaments are not really ‘ornaments’ at all. If we see something we like, we can usually find a way to hang it on our tree.” Smaller Christmas trees, as well as a myriad of treasured decorations

collected over the years, give each room in the Fredericks’ home a festive touch. From the moment you enter the vestibule of the 90year-old traditional, yet eclectic, home, lush garlands, resplendent with crimson bows and glittering lights, and an abundance of wreaths hung from above say “Merry Christmas” in a big way. Even the kitchen is dressed in seasonal splendor. A whimsical gingerbread village, compliments of Jaimeson, tops the stunning concrete and steel island, handcrafted by Jim and Maralin. “Jaimeson has been making our gingerbread houses for years,” say the Fredericks, “and they always get lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’.” A scrumptious buffet of holiday fare prepared by Jim and Maralin, accompanied by delectable pasta from Candicci’s, never fails to impress. “We just love everything about Christmas,” the Fredericks agree, “from decorating the house and planning the menu to picking out just the right presents (Jim is an expert gift finder!), then watching the chaos of flying wrapping paper and ribbons. It’s all about being caught up in the holiday spirit and making dreams come true,” Maralin adds. Indeed, for this family, the night before Christmas really is an evening of enchantment that wraps everyone lucky enough to be there in warmth, love and the spirit of friendship, leaving them with – yes, you guessed it – visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads. esting peacefully on two parklike acres in Ladue is the architectural masterpiece that busy professionals Chrissy and Mike Nardini share with 8-year-old Harry. Originally designed and built in 1968 by architect Ralph A. Fournier for himself and his family, this mid-20th-century Americanstyle contemporary home was the focus of an extensive renovation that honed a remarkable, yet tired, ranch into a well-rested, refreshed and sparkling jewel. Fournier, a contemporary architect, graduated from the School of Architecture at Washington University during the golden age of St. Louis modernism. Indeed, Chrissy and Mike’s home was born during the time that saw St. Louis as the epicenter of Americanstyle contemporary and modernist homes. Kris Keller, president and founder of The Design Source Ltd., took this icon of architectural history and catapulted it into the 21st century. By honoring its mid-century contemporary roots, yet adding a punch of sophisticated style that
gives the home a softly modern edge, Kris was able to give the Nardinis the nesting place of their dreams. “We offered Kris the creative license to do her magic here,” says Chrissy. “Having worked with her on a previous home, we knew she could give us exactly what we wanted.” And so began the transformation that would take seven months from conception to completion and lead to a home that, according to Kris, is “a lean ribbon of linear spaces beautifully and newly defined by the renovation, leaving only the original footprint as a memory of what was.” Following a total gutting of the home, Kris and the talented interior design team members, Douglas Ong and Cyndi Schmitz, went to work making their vision a reality. “Our design overview for this project,” explains Kris, “was to create the simplicity of artistic tranquility by contrasting vanilla and java or chocolate finishes – a more Zen-like approach to the typical and starker black and white.” She adds, “The modern sensibility of the home provided STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2010

us with clean, sleek architecture, eliminating the need to focus on the abundant use of millwork and allowing the home, in its simplicity, to become the showcase.” Embracing this mid-century work of art and re-envisioning it for today, Kris was able to give Chrissy, Mike and Harry a home that seems to transcend time, paying homage to the past and looking to the future. “Our home wraps you in comfort,” say the homeowners. “The warm colors and soft, sophisticated design are very comfortable and relaxing. It’s timeless.” Every inch of space was taken into account when reconfiguring the interior. By removing the wall that enclosed the entry and staircase, an updated and open space was created. A living room wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows invites the outside in, allowing the exquisite landscape to become an ever-changing canvas of color. And whatever the season, light dances through this space, giving it energy and life. Kris’ deft blending of circular shapes with more graphic lines softens the home’s modern mentality, making it undeniably chic, yet completely comfortable. The large master bedroom suite was a previous addition. However, creative design changes allowed for his-and-her offices, closets and bathrooms. “A thick chunk of floating wall accommodates the bed, with a comfy chenille headboard, two bedside tables and wall lamps,” says Kris. “For a bit of fun and whimsy,” she adds, “the new wall is peaked,

A gorgeous see-through fireplace, completely redressed with bold new surrounds, connects the dining room with the living room. “This home is perfect for entertaining,” says Chrissy. “It has wonderful flow and intimate spaces, such as the new pass-through butler’s pantry. The home also works well for catered parties. But more than anything, this is a family home, a place where we can unwind with each other and with Harry. And while we didn’t know that children were in our future when we purchased this home, the biggest blessing has been having Harry here with us and a part of our lives.” Surely, everything about this home works well. It has truly become a place where the Nardinis can rest their heads and their hearts.

Beyond the
ChristmasTree
Now’s the time to start thinking about the trees that will grace your landscape next year BY LUCYANN BOSTON

t the same time you’re talking turkey, you should also be talking trees. They can be planted anytime before the ground freezes and will provide years of enjoyment. If you’re a smart shopper, you can make your selection from among native Missouri species that thrive in our complicated climate, with extremes of heat and cold in the summer and winter and wild swings of temperatures in both spring and fall. Natives are also far less vulnerable to insects and disease. Once established, they require less attention and fertilizer. Just think of the beauty and easy care offered by the dogwood, redbud, American holly, sassafras and the new landscape darling, the river birch, with its multiple trunk growth habit, lacy leaves and peeling bark. All are natives of Missouri and Southern Illinois.

But there are other native trees, less well-known, that can work equally well in the home landscape. They are highlighted as Plants of Merit (www.plantsofmerit.org) and part of a list compiled by the Missouri Botanical Garden, Powell Gardens in Kansas City and the Mizzou Botanic Garden in Columbia. Begun in 1998, the list highlights trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals that thrive in the tricky climate of the lower Midwest. New plants are added each year, and after two years on the list, selections are retired to the emeritus list. Above: Dark green oval leaves of the American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana). “The best time time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.” —Chinese proverb
HERE ARE SOME NATIVES WORTH INVESTIGATING: t American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) A small to medium (20 to 35 feet) understory tree for moist, shady locations; catkin-like blossoms in spring are followed by heavy clusters of interesting winged seeds; leaves are dark green ovals with a jagged edge. t American smoke tree (Cotinus obovatus) Airy, smoke-like pink plumes follow yellow-green flowers and give this 20- to 30-foot tree its name; plumes last most of the summer and are followed by brilliant fall leaf color; will tolerate poor soil as long as it’s well drained. t Black gum (Nyssa sylvatica) A beautiful landscape shade tree that grows 30 to 50 feet tall and has gorgeous fall color; prefers moist soil; female trees produce dark blue fruits for birds and wildlife. t Chinkapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) An easyto-grow oak that can get as tall as 60 feet; long, narrow leaves turn yellow to brown in fall; can handle semi-dry conditions; works both as a landscape and street tree. t Fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) Excellent small (12 to 20 feet) specimen tree with creamy, fringe-like blossom clusters in spring; grape-like fruit for birds in late summer; yellow foliage in autumn. t Red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) Showy, tubular, red spring flowers attract hummingbirds; grows only 12 to 20 feet tall; in fall produces capsules containing 1 to 3 buckeyes; can be a specimen or grown as part of a screen or hedge; needs afternoon shade. t Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) A small (15 to 25 feet) tree for all seasons; dainty white blossoms in spring; edible blueberry-like fruit in summer; glowing color in fall; multi-trunk habit for winter interest; good for shrub borders and naturalized landscapes. t Swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) Long-lived and easy to grow; thrives in acidic soil, from swampy to well-drained; leaves are dark green on top, silvery white underneath and turn yellow to reddish purple in fall; grows 50 to 70 feet tall. t Yellow wood (Cladrastis kentukea) Beautiful shade tree for sunny spots in the home landscape; fragrant, drooping wisteria-like flowers in spring; flat brown seedpods and bright yellow leaves in autumn; grows 30 to 50 feet tall.

After Christmas trees, wreaths are probably the most identifiable of holiday decorations. Dating back hundreds of years, the use of evergreen wreaths at Christmastime originally symbolized “life” during the cold winter months. Today, wreaths are more decorative in nature, and many homeowners are choosing to adorn their doors with them throughout the year. We asked seven of your favorite floral designers to give their takes on the holiday wreath and offer some unique options that could work throughout the fall and winter months. The greatest thing is that these wonderful displays of floral finery need not be limited to the door only. Natural wreaths that can survive the elements are ideal for a fence or mailbox. And, of course, nothing would dress up a fireplace or a window more than one of these glorious garlands. one: Fall harvest-inspired wreath by A Floral Gallery. two: Festive winter wreath by Bob Hauck of Walter Knoll Florist. three: Winter white frosted evergreen wreath by Mary Tuttle’s. four: Classic Christmas wreath by Three French Hens. five: Colorful Christmas door decoration by MKS Designs, Inc. six: Winter swag by Summer House. seven: Natural fall wreath by Wildflowers. style as organic and rustic rather than uptown and polished,” says Carole. “Bernie and Jim wanted a contemporary space that didn’t necessarily look ‘green,’ but was all about sustainability.” Starting with a blank canvas, Carole deftly used her expert space planning skills and architectural and interior design prowess to transform her clients’ dreams of a chic, club-like, yet family-friendly, spot into an eco-conscious reality. “It was raw space,” says Carole, “but I did have certain parameters that I had to work with, such as load-bearing walls, heating and cooling vents and existing plumbing.” A geothermal energy system was added, which pulls heat from the earth to provide superior warmth in the winter, while transferring the home’s heat underground in the summer. With the design of the space intact, it was time to address the décor. Taking a departure from the muted, earthy tones upstairs, Carole suggested a bold color scheme of gray, black, red and white. “There are four shades of gray on the walls,” says Carole. “Having subtle color differences gives the room interest,” she adds. Of course, all the paint is low-VOC (volatile organic compound), which releases significantly fewer polluting toxins into the air. “You could say that gray is the new green in this room,” quips Carole. “We’ve chosen only 100% cotton or cotton blend fabrics for our upholstery,” explains Carole. Natural bamboo shades from Hunter Douglas serve as minimal, but stylish, window treatments. “My clients love to bring the outside in,” she adds. “That’s why we chose simple coverings that enhance rather than detract from nature’s beauty.” “Carole has done a fantastic job creating an atypical ‘green’ room for us,” says Bernie. “We’ve had pajama parties down here and have even done some salsa dancing! Beautiful Blend A DRAMATIC HEARTH ROOM ADDITION IS A STUNNING COUNTERPOINT TO A TRADITIONAL CAPE COD DESIGN BY KATIE UNDERHILL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DWELLSTUDIO ARCHITECTS
Soaring to new heights, the hearth room addition that Kevin Chapman, Principal of Dwellstudio Architects, created for his clients seamlessly blends the old with the new. “Our task was to expand the traditional, circa-1940 Cape Cod-style house to provide for a more modern lifestyle while staying true to its original form and style,” Kevin explains. The missing element of this Frontenac home was a comfortable gathering spot, a place where family and friends could relax, unwind and spend time together. Part of a 1,700-square-foot addition, the architecturally dramatic hearth room is as eye-catching as it is enjoyable. Painted pine cathedral ceilings rise to a lofty two-and-a-half stories, providing an unexpected contrast with the rest of the home’s more traditional 9-foot ceilings. According to Kevin, “The idea was for visitors to move from the entry through the lesser volumes, then step into a soaring interior space that surprises and provides a profoundly different visual experience.” Large, south-facing dormers stream plenty of natural light, while a wall

of French doors with transoms easily connects the indoors with the outdoors, leading to a spacious walled “room” on the terrace that is perfect for entertaining alfresco. Substantial Douglas fir beams and collar ties – repeated in the fireplace mantel – offer a distinctive design element and help to make the towering space feel cozy. Kevin custom-fabricated the weathering Corten steel hangers and connectors, which add even more beauty overhead. An asymmetrical, two-story masonry fireplace serves as an anchor to tie the room together, successfully blending traditional and contemporary design. Above: Contextually, this new family space is the centerpiece of a total renovation of the existing house, which was reorganized and modernized. The completed space also features a gourmet kitchen, nestled inside the existing house, yet seamlessly connected to the new addition. New random-width oak flooring is used as a continuation of existing hardwood floors, which were sanded, stripped and re-stained. A close-up view of the distinctive Douglas fir beams and collar ties reveals in detail the beauty that lies above, making the stylish space warm and cozy.
