The power of
color
The ability of color to transform our surroundings, our mood and our outlook cannot be overestimated. And as time passes, I’ve become more aware of the impact of color in creating happy, serene and energypositive spaces. As for me, lemony, sun-kissed fabrics and ocean- and sky-inspired blues that shower rooms with ethereal beauty announce April’s much-anticipated arrival. This spring, let color drape your spaces with happiness. Our color-drenched Obsession department (pages 12 & 14) and suburban home and garden (pages 32-41) will sweep you away with an expanse of color that is sure to inspire a fresh new look. We found fabulous colors on countertops, wallcoverings, fabrics, draperies and flooring. In terms of color brightening your world, the options are countless! And in the garden – color always takes center stage. (Be sure to visit “Outdoor Living” at www.stlouishomesmag.com to see colorful, chic garden seats for your garden space.) Our unique urban home on pages 26-31 is another lively setting, and it reminds us of the power that color has to fill our lives with contentment and joy. Barb Slavkin, Allied ASID, member of the Color Marketing Group and owner of Barbara Slavkin Interiors, LLC, says that she is personally fond of the 2010 color palettes by SherwinWilliams, which reflect the comfort of getting back to basics with colors that exude a timeless quality and draw us to the idea of repurposing treasures that will become “future heirlooms.” She adds, “Color palettes that reflect a playful, feel-good temperament will be those with exuberant combinations that allow for mixing and matching to create joyful interiors.” Barb suggests Sherwin-Williams’ wonderful array of paint colors. And I love their feel-good names: Verve Violet (a bright purple); Summer Day (a bright, sunny yellow); Pickle (a bright, fun green... don’t you just love that name?); Sapphire (a clear, clean blue), and Animated Coral (a bright, pure coral). At my house, a bedroom redesign is on its way and taking its cue from these lively, cheerful colors! COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

Distinctive Digs
Jason Todd, landscape designer and project coordinator at Landscape St. Louis, creates unique, colorful outdoor environments. EDITED BY VICKI PICKLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON
DESIGNER SKETCH: Hometown: Jacksonville, Illinois Years of experience: 7 years of experience, 4 with LSL Education/affiliations: University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign, Major: Horticulture, Minor: Residential Landscape Design. Member of Illinois Landscape Contractors Association, Planet, Missouri Landscape and Nursery Association. With three words, describe your design philosophy or style: Traditional; appealing; and inviting. Design inspiration comes from: Everywhere! No matter where you are, elements and design details can be imitated to fit the architecture or outdoor room you are trying to create – paying close attention to colors, special compositions, textures, etc. www.landscapestlouis.com
DESIGNER Q+A How does the landscaping design process evolve at a design/build company? Creating a new outdoor environment is a thrilling process that should always be exciting and fresh. Using a systematic approach, we create a comprehensive plan for the outdoor space our clients envision that complements the home’s interior and exterior architecture, captures the personality and lifestyle of the owners, and achieves an environment that will be more than just a view. Once we have a final design in place, we proceed with the implementation and installation part of the project, many times in phases, and help with long-term landscape maintenance. The time we spend with our clients ensures project success as well as the relationship and friendship we look to embrace. Can you describe the scope of the outdoor environments? The basic concept of an outdoor environment is to create a usable space or what most people refer to as an “outdoor room.” Ideally, you try to create a series of outdoor rooms that include different elements, textures, shapes and colors that define the space and draw you in while cohabitating with what exists. Our team is passionate about what we do! We specialize in creating designs for your outdoor spaces that have beauty, functionality and visual interest, no matter the size of the project.

See page 52 for resources.
How big a role do plants play in an outdoor environment? Huge! Installing a patio on the back of the house is only one step in achieving an outdoor space. Plants bring balance and harmony to the spaces that we create. They enhance the experience of outdoor spaces by bringing color, form and texture to settings, as well as help to define a space and provide a passageway from one space to another. Plants also help to establish a sense of style and accentuate the architecture of the structural elements within the outdoor room. Whether you are talking about plants in a garden bed or in a container on the patio, plant life adds visual complexity to complete every unique space we create. What are the most exciting aspects of your job? I get great satisfaction in helping clients create an outdoor living space that fits their lifestyle. Being able to see the hard work you put forth as a designer come to life – through the work of our unbelievable crew members – is extremely gratifying. But nothing compares to the feeling when you visit a year or two down the road and see just how much beauty and meaning the outdoor space you designed has brought to the owners. I always enjoy incorporating a fire pit into an entertaining space, for example, and hearing about the evenings spent there with family and friends.

Local, fresh fare adds seasonal flavor to your next party menu. BY VICKI PICKLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL JACOB
For a dinner party with an authentic Country French flavor, choosing Franco in historic Soulard is a classic idea. With its superbly fresh fare, having Franco’s talented chef cater your next party ensures that your guests will dine in style. Owner Tom Schmidt blends the historic French setting and its complementary menu with rustic, yet classic flavor. “Our cuisine and atmosphere combine seamlessly to showcase the area’s historic character and the vibrancy of nearby Soulard Market within the unique urban, neighborhood locale.” A cool spring evening was the backdrop for the memorable get-together. Angie Kirkland of Express Home provided her design expertise to showcase the freshness of the season with cleverly arranged fruits, vegetables, flowers and greenery that transformed the party table with spring-injected ingenuity. “With the latest trends in farm-chic décor and farm-to-table cuisine just feeling so right these days, why not surround yourself and your guests with sweet reminders of farm-fresh beauty from your local farmer’s market,” says Angie. “Adding spring fruits and vegetables to your table decorations will not only remind your guests of the simpler things in life, but will add that certain je ne sais quoi that the French are so famous for!” As the evening progressed, the menu’s flavorful selections kept coming. The evening began with Paris-inspired cocktails topped with champagne and ended with a light dessert that featured fresh strawberries, meringue, and lemon custard with a mixed berry drizzle. Prepared by Executive Chef Matthew Abeshouse, the colorful, fresh party menu was spectacular. “A Country French-style menu with a contemporary twist fuses perfectly with fresh, seasonal fare from the local farmer’s markets,” says Matthew. And daily trips to the markets ensure that the freshest foods will enliven a scrumptious, classic French menu from Franco, treating your guests to the season’s best.

Canvas of Color
Originality punctuates a Clayton home with style and a sense of humor. BY JUDY UELK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LON BRAUER
According to an ancient Chinese proverb, “The journey is the reward.” This couldn’t be more true for one lucky gentleman who found that creating the home of his dreams was fun every step of the way. This Clayton homeowner’s condo was a blank canvas ready to be transformed. With the expert help of interior designer Renée Céleste Flanders, ASID, his new home became a retro, contemporary space that refers back to the ’60s and is alive with color and artistic presence.
“I see interior design as a form of visual poetry.” – Renée Flanders, designer
“Whenever I begin a design project,” says Renée, “I study the architecture of the building itself. This was a circa 1960s mid-century modern construction, and I took that into consideration with respect to the interior.” With that design tenet in mind, the homeowner’s desire to acquire an Eames® lounge chair and ottoman, a quintessential example of mid-century design, figured perfectly into the direction Renée wanted to go. Following a trip to Ivey-Selkirk’s Modernist auction, the homeowner had three new pieces of art and a rug, all of which influenced the condo’s color palette. “My client loves bright, primary colors,” says Renée. “So, we chose bold fabrics that would pop off the white walls in the main living areas.” In a distinct departure from the neutral background, saturated green countertops were the inspiration for matching walls in the kitchen and dining area. The stark white Saarinen round dining table and tulip chairs are wonderfully juxtaposed against this rich shade. In contrast, a soft gray in the master bedroom provides a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. In addition to happy hues and classic mid-century furniture styles, artwork played a huge part in setting the tone for this condo. “It was great fun finding wonderful pieces to display,” says the homeowner. I love having a home filled with so many interesting things to look at and enjoy. Owning the ‘real thing’ is also very

The rug was produced as part of the RugMark Program of GoodWeave™, which works to end illegal child labor in the carpet industry and to offer educational opportunities to children in South Asia. The kitchen and dining area is a lively place. Artwork includes “Landscape” by Michael Hoffman; a floor sculpture, “The Poet” by John Hipple; and a wall sculpture “Bouquet of Knives” by the interior designer. A classic white Saarinen table and tulip chairs add to the mid-century modern ambience. A cork floor gives an ecofriendly touch. important to me,” he adds. “If I’m going to have it forever, I want to know it’s authentic.” That being said, Renée and her client were continually searching for significant pieces that would punctuate the home with originality, playfulness and a sense of humor. Of special note is the Walter Bauer “Toothpicks” sculpture that graces a corner of the living room. This original artwork consists of 144 wood pieces resembling toothpicks, all held together by gravity alone. Another of the homeowner’s most favorite newly acquired possessions is the Miss Rio ottoman in the living room. Made by local Brazilian craftspeople, this sure conversation starter is constructed entirely of recycled flip-flops. The journey – to find just the right pieces – was a grand adventure for the homeowner.
“No part of this project was work,” he says. “It was all fun. I loved the process. It actually became a great hobby for me. I think it’s so interesting that there’s a story behind every piece of art, every chair, lamp and rug.” The repetition of horizontal lines, vertical lines and circular shapes was key to Renée’s plan. “I see interior design as a form of visual poetry,” she says, “so I am constantly on the lookout for twoand three-dimensional objects that ‘rhyme.’” That design imperative, along with her commanding use of bright colors, classic mid-century modern furnishings and unique and whimsical art, give the space a strong voice that makes you want to sit up and listen. The homeowner couldn’t agree more. “I feel very comfortable here,” he says. “Renée really took the time to get to know me, and it shows. This is a place that makes me happy.” s

picture perfect An enchanting restoration recreates the charm of a bygone era. BY JUDY UELK AND GARDEN WRITER, LUCYANN BOSTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL JACOB
Curb appeal is certainly an understatement. This is the kind of house that makes you do a double-take as you drive past. The charming white clapboard with its large wraparound porch, complete with a romantic gliding swing, is indeed enchanting. It’s the kind of house that looks as if it were plucked from another time and is begging folks to remember when life was simpler and a tall cool glass of lemonade, a
porch swing and a home filled with family love were really all that mattered. For homeowners Casey and Brent and their four children, this 1892 Queen Anne-style Webster Park gem is all that and more. The magical ambience that exudes from the home’s every pore captivated Casey way before she ever knew that her family would someday be its lucky caretakers. “We actually attended a party here,” she says, “and I just couldn’t get this place out of my head.” But Casey and Brent had just finished a renovation and were settled in when their dream home came on the market. Fortunately, some dreams really do come true, and four years later Casey learned that the house might indeed be up for sale again. “At that point,” she says, “I contacted the homeowner, we worked out a deal, and we bought it. The rest is history!” Although the home was exactly what she and Brent wanted, as with many older homes, the interior spaces didn’t quite work for a modern family of six. The exterior needed a makeover, as well, to recapture the distinctive character and

Contractor Bob Robben of Robben Contracting, Inc. says, “The couple was a pleasure to work with and gave our team the creative license to create something very special for them. Their project was challenging, fun and so rewarding.” Eight months later, after a sweeping restoration that touched nearly all of the home’s spaces inside and out, the charming white clapboard became a sparkling window to the past, while allowing its owners to live with the conveniences of today. “It was very important to us,” say the homeowners, “to maintain the historical and architectural integrity of the home. After all, that’s what made us

The outdoor projects include design, installation and maintenance work (in phases) by Fiddle Creek Construction, Horstmann Brothers Landscaping and Annette Smith of Blooming Decorator. A gracious extension of the home, a wraparound porch is the ideal spot to relax and enjoy the gardens. “The homeowners were pivotal in the successful outcome of this delightful project,” says architect Ken Burns. fall in love with it in the first place.” The original ten rooms grew to 13 with five bedrooms, four and a half baths, a cook’s dream kitchen, mudroom, expanded family room, convenient second-floor laundry and a large playroom on the third floor. Eight-foot ceilings were raised back to their original 10 feet. Gleaming hardwood floors were installed to match existing flooring in the foyer. And a carriage house garage became a charming haven for guests. All plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) were completely redone throughout, and a home automation system was installed by Integration Controls™, LLC which monitors and maintains the home’s lighting, security, home entertainment and HVAC. “Having this system was key to making our home as energyefficient and livable as it is,” say Casey and Brent. “We also replaced almost all of the original windows with new energy-efficient ones.” With the guts of the house in perfect order, Casey was now able to put her design eye to work, creating an interior that truly reflects the sunny personalities of the family that lives there. In concert with local design professionals, she created a

Soft hues of yellow, sage, rose, blue and cream give the home a relaxed and happy persona and are the ideal backdrop for the homeowners’ treasured European antiques. In contrast, the dining room pops with rich raisin-colored walls, enveloping its guests in warmth. Truly, each room in this wonderful home is a place where family and friends can relax and enjoy the surroundings and each other. Perhaps one of Casey and Brent’s most favorite spaces, however, is outside. The rebuilt and expanded porch, with its lacy spindles, complex columns and intricate latticework, has often been the gathering spot of choice for family and friends. Wrapping around to the side of the house the new “old” porch now features speakers and recessed and rope lighting. Classic white wicker furniture, colorful pillows and planters abundant with greenery await guests, offering a cozy respite and perfect perch to admire the lush garden’s symphony of color. that works in perfect harmony with their historic home. Believing that the bluestone walkway leading to the home’s front steps was “too pretty to hide,” Annette selected dwarf varieties of boxwood and holly that would enhance, but not obscure, the walkway. Interspersed among the shrubs, nepeta – with its blue blossoms and gray-green leaves – picks up the color of the stone. In front of the home, bright pink Knock Out roses, ‘Lady in Red’ hydrangeas, ‘Pink Velour’ crape myrtle, ‘Stargazer’ lilies and a succession of annuals in “warm and welcoming” pink and rose tones draw the eye through the front landscaping and

into the side yard. There, splashes of pink and yellow flowers, grasses, and chartreuse and gray-green groundcover reflect the colors used in the décor of the lovely, wraparound porch. A restored brick wall centered with a wrought-iron gate opens to the totally redesigned backyard. It was a project that involved, among other things, moving 130 hosta plants. Allimportant in the re-landscaping project was to keep the eye moving through the garden by repeating the colors from the patio furniture throughout the landscape. “The first thing to do is to select the color palette, then look for interesting plants within that palette,” explains Annette.
Below: The family room opens to a fabulous, inviting veranda – a favorite outdoor space of the home. The veranda lives as one with adjacent outdoor gathering spaces and the lush garden. A shade tree acts as a natural canopy, leaving no room to doubt that relaxation – enjoying the cool springtime breezes – is the order of the day. Brightly colored begonias repeat the theme of the vibrant outdoor fabrics and draw the eye into the garden.
Above and top right: A yummy yellow palette that wraps the family room in warmth is accented to perfection with a combination of fabrics and accessories in shades of red, creamy brown and green. The space is “the icing on the cake” on the home’s main level. A comfy curved sofa invites curling up to watch TV, while organic woven wicker Palecek™ chairs in a natural hue add texture to the sun-filled living space. A French antique game table and intricate buffet are treasured heirlooms in the room. The buffet’s four top finials are each a different shape, most likely a “signature” of the artisan who carved the piece.
To create visual movement, colors were repeated while varying the shape and texture of the plants. And with Casey, Brent and their active family in mind, plants were chosen that, while beautiful, can also stand up to the vagaries of the St. Louis climate. Not far from a group of ‘Sun Power’ hosta, for instance, a shrubby, jagged-leafed, golden ‘Tiger Eyes’ sumac was selected. To literally highlight a dark corner of the garden, the
decision was made to combine a white-blossomed ‘Annabelle’ hydrangea, green and white ‘Night Before Christmas’ hosta and silver-leaved ‘Jack Frost’ brunnera. Casey admits that the landscaping could not be more perfect. And this hands-on homeowner was thrilled to have such a magnificent bird’s-eye view of the garden transformation from her master bedroom window. Annette notes, “Casey was very involved in the garden redesign – she really has an eye for it.” s
Below: The garden‘s design is superbly planned and awash with eye-catching beauty. “I don’t believe in fussy plants,” says Annette of Blooming Decorator. She collaborated with Casey to ensure a fabulous, worry-free garden. A mix of foliage with varying textures and heights provides interest and enhances an area where a stony channel catches water runoff. Right top: A period lamppost, surrounded by Knock Out roses, harmonizes with the home’s Queen Anne architecture; In the background, feathery grasses soften a brick wall. Right bottom: Colordrenched decorative pillows, flower-filled containers and bedding plants repeat the garden’s color theme. See page 52 for design resources.

Incredible edibles Edible gardens provide beauty and bounty. BY JUDY UELK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CALEB MELCHIOR
A bunch of fragrant chives teems with cool lavender blossoms by the mailbox. Deep purple spears of fresh asparagus frame a patch of colorful blooms. Clusters of plump, juicy berries beg to be plucked and enjoyed. Edible landscaping is quickly becoming more attractive amid soaring food prices, rising fuel costs, alarming pesticide scares, and increased environmental awareness. And, while a meticulously manicured ornamental lawn may indeed be beautiful to behold, it is most often chemically treated and nutritionally barren. Edible gardens are not what they used to be either. Rescued from the small plot enclosed in chicken wire at the back of the yard, the new gardens are aesthetically pleasing landscape utopias that burst with color, fragrance and texture. Bushes dripping with bright red strawberries, the bold fuchsia-colored flowers of a big healthy artichoke, and the happy hues on the blossoms of dozens of herbs can help to make your landscape artistic as well as appetizing. Beautiful and functional, edible gardens “give back” daily to homeowners, allowing them to enjoy the “fruits” of their labor over and over again. Maury Frein, Retail Sales Manager for Ahner’s Garden and Gifts, has noticed a definite trend toward edible gardening. “There’s a new generation of homeowners who are embracing the idea of ‘growing their own,’” he says. “It’s a good feeling to know exactly where your food came from. Plus, there’s nothing fresher than grabbing a tomato right off the vine.” Anyone can add edibles to their landscape, and you don’t have to start all over to reap the benefits. If you’re new to edible gardening, why not experiment by adding a few herbs among some groundcover. Or plant them near doors, walkways or porches where their savory aromas can be easily enjoyed. Ahner’s Maury Frein adds that herbs can be a great choice to plant among vegetables. “Herbs are wonderful to have on hand when cooking. Nothing beats fresh basil on a ruby red tomato, the delectable bite of cilantro in a homemade salsa, or the tantalizing aroma of oregano in an Italian pasta sauce. Caleb Melchior, a gardener with Sugar Creek Gardens in Kirkwood and a test
Lettuce and dill leaf
gardener for Organic Gardening magazine, says that taste and availability are the top reasons most people choose to grow their own food. “Freshly picked fruits, vegetables and herbs just taste better, and having them right outside your door couldn’t make it easier to enhance your favorite dishes.” “Tomatoes and peppers continue to top the list,” says Carolyn Boardman, store manager of SummerWinds® Nursery in Ellisville, “but cucumbers, beans and zucchini are also popular choices.” Although veggies can be integrated with flowers, Boardman says to make sure they share similar growing needs. “We have many customers using containers to grow vegetables. Almost any large container will work, but one especially made for growing veggies is the EarthBox®, a self-contained unit that is virtually effort-free.” And when you’re thinking edible, don’t forget the flowers! Nasturtiums add an unexpected zest when tossed with a salad or placed alongside a platter of pasta. Their round peppery leaves are also good to eat. Lavender is also an especially tasty option. Melchior suggests a decadent truffle recipe that infuses the cream used to make the ganache with lavender. According to Sarah Vickers, director of operations at The Market at Busch’s Grove, the lobster and lavender soup they prepare at the upscale grocery is scrumptious. This spring may be the perfect time to summon your inner farmer and get growing. You never know what farm-fresh delicacies just might end up on your table.

WireLESS IS MORE Affordable and accessible, a connected home can be yours... no strings attached. BY JUDY UELK
Good communication is the key to any successful relationship. And with the explosion of affordable home networking opportunities, each of your home’s electronic systems can communicate with one another and with you. “The future in total home control is having integrated systems that speak to each other,” says David Young, President of the Sound Room, a registered dealer for Home Automation, Inc. (HAI®). With cost down and reliability up, home automation is not just for the luxury market anymore. Basic systems can be upgraded as budgets allow and needs change. And with new wireless systems, older homes can also become “connected” without the expense of new wiring. A complete home automation system acts as a command center, integrating all of your home’s many subsystems, including security, lighting, climate and entertainment. Even the iPhone and iPod Touch can be used as remote controls to monitor your home’s automation. X-panels on your computer screen that mimic your home’s touch screens allow you to remain “in touch” even when you’re away. In addition to HAI®, Sony® offers HomeShare™, available at ABF Security Systems, Inc. This whole-house, multi-zone, multi-source audio and video system also has intercom and closed circuit camera capabilities. “Not only can you view up to four cameras on the keypad, it also provides homeowners with feedback, including their iPod song and artist lists and radio station frequencies,” says Mike Vargo of ABF. “Universal Remote Control has a new iPod docking station and handheld remote control that talk to each other,” says Phil McHenry, home system specialist at The Screening Room. “In other words,” he explains, “you can surf your iPod from the remote control by artist, song or playlist, and all of the information is displayed brightly on the screen.” According to Jamie Briesemeister of Integration Controls™, Sonos®, another multi-room music system, also offers a free application to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a controller for Sonos® ZonePlayers. “Like the commercials say,” Jamie notes, “there’s an app for everything.” “We’re enabling people to take control of their own hightech choices, as well as home management and energy use remotely,” says Young. Wireless systems alert homeowners via e-mail or text to power failures, overloaded circuits, and so on, which help to prevent unwanted surprises. Additionally, Sub-Zero offers the option of integrating your wine storage unit into your home’s security system, according to Justin Breckle, regional manager of Roth Distributing. “You can rest assured that your perfect bottle of pinot remains just that – perfect.” Keep the communication flowing, and you’ll enjoy a relationship with your home that only keeps getting better. Old World Charm
EDITED BY VICKI PICKLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE MARXER
A Town & Country courtyard is an architectural beauty. With the design expertise of architect Dick Busch of Dick Busch Architects, a simple open space on the front of a beautiful Town & Country home was transformed into the magnificent European-style front courtyard that it is today, and it was a creation that evolved naturally. According to Dick, the front courtyard space “created itself” with its uniquely ideal location for a one-of-a-kind addition to the home for entertaining and enjoying evenings outdoors. Distinguished by a free-form, W-shaped row of stone caps, the courtyard entrance is set adjacent to the home’s main entry. Featured within the 14- by 20-foot enclosure, a brick wall with an iron gated stone arch gives an instant element of interest and appeal to the Old World-inspired architectural design. A stone fireplace provides a warm highlight and was added without a raised hearth, allowing more floor space to be utilized for a dining table and fountains – including a pre-cast

lion head fountain – giving the “room” just the right ambience for leisure or dining al fresco. Highly durable masonry – oversized tumbled Tulsa brick and a tumbled Harvest Mix stone combination – contributes to the feeling of an Old World setting. The courtyard’s most prominent and artistically unique feature is the curvilinear top of the brick entryway wall. A charming wood burning fireplace, Eden flagstone pavement and lush plantings add to the coziness and allure of the architecturally rich space. Frequently enjoyed by the homeowners, the open-air courtyard is described as an architecturally and aesthetically pleasing space and further enhanced by the peaceful sound of cascading water and wonderful nighttime views. The timeless architecture wraps the space in character and warmth, offering limitless opportunities for gathering and relaxation. See page 52 for resources.

Whether you are new to the city or relocating to another area within the Greater St. Louis area, there are many communities with distinct environments to check out before you make that final decision where to live. If an urban lifestyle is where you will find happiness, the downtown area enjoys a range of residential opportunities from the hip urban loft scene – with a sophisticated and artsy atmosphere – to city bungalows and mansions within walking distance to shops, restaurants, neighborhood parks or the newly opened Citygarden. If you are looking for a place to call home with wide-open spaces for the kids or to walk the dogs, suburbia might be the answer. The introductory cover page to this special section, Relocating in Saint Louis, showcases the photographic beauty of St. Albans in West St. Louis County. Not only does St. Albans boast two championship golf courses, a gorgeous clubhouse, swim club, and recreational lake; it has its own post office, private elementary school, a quaint French gourmet restaurant and a charming market on the property. St. Albans is located on the Missouri River bluffs with many of the homes having breathtaking views of the river. Educational opportunities for children are always an important priority for every family. Pages 70-77 highlight the key qualities of the top private and public schools in the St. Louis area. As always, be sure to enlist the help of a real estate professional to ensure the success of your new home search! Page 62 offers a general guide to the Greater St. Louis area to help you get started. Best regards,
Suzie Osterloh, Publishing Director, Relocating in Saint Louis magazine

Healthy Choices Exploring healthy living in St. Louis.
St. Louis is a city of medicine and boasts two first-rate medical schools, Saint Louis University and Washington University. These schools and programs can be credited for the excellent and extensive health care options that St. Louis has to offer. Every year, area hospitals are ranked among the nation’s best in publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, for their excellence in highly specialized fields. Residents of the Greater St. Louis area have a variety of options when it comes to heath care.
Washington University Physicians Washington University Physicians are the specialist doctors of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. They work with your primary physician in diagnosing
and treating the full range of conditions that affect both children and adults. Many people prefer to choose their own specialists, such as a dermatologist, gynecologist, sleep specialist, allergist or ear, nose and throat specialist. Others rely on their pediatricians or primary physicians’ referrals for cardiology, neurology or childhood disorders, for example. It is reassuring that Washington University Physicians are listed by doctor-rated surveys, such as America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America, more frequently than any other group in the Midwest. Most patients are seen at the Center for Advanced Medicine, the main location at Kingshighway and I-64/40. Another convenient location is at I-270 and Olive Blvd. in West County. A Dream Come True BY KATIE UNDERHILL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHEILA LOCUS
Inspired design and thoughtful details define this sophisticated space. CHALLENGE: To transform a small, outdated kitchen with insufficient storage into an expansive, elegant space of the homeowner’s dreams. SOLUTION: Throughout her career as a real estate agent, homeowner Leslie Owens has admired countless well-designed spaces – all of which inspired her to transform her own home. Desiring a spacious upgrade, she embarked on a renovation that would simplify her life and improve the flow of her home. To overcome structural limitations, the basement staircase was relocated, allowing for the installation of a large island, which helped Leslie attain the 6 feet of countertop space she desired. She chose all of the kitchen’s stunning materials, including the European cherry island top with an ogee edge, Giallo Beach granite countertops from Custom Stone Interiors, and topaz crystal painted wood cabinetry with a gold patina finish and antique brass lion head pulls and
BEFORE
knobs. “Selling homes has allowed me to appreciate special details,” she says. The kitchen was expanded by approximately 300 square feet to include a cozy breakfast room that opens into the living room area, which was also added during the renovation. An ideal gathering space, the breakfast room includes a functional service area, providing the perfect place to assemble drinks and dessert while entertaining. The large picture window floods the kitchen with warm, natural light. Designer J.R. Zachary of Three French Hens, whom Leslie calls “a magician,” selected all of the finishing touches and accessories. To Leslie’s amazement, he understood her sense of style immediately, even amid the chaos of construction. “Listening to the client is crucial,” explains J.R., whose vision for the project was “livable elegance.” By incorporating unexpected elements, such as a dramatic leopard oil painting, he infused the space with originality and visual interest.
“This is my dream kitchen, and I couldn’t be happier.” – Leslie Owens, homeowner 80
