At sea or at home, get onboard with Bang & Olufsen of Bexleyheath has built a reputation for the expert installation of the award-winning Danish products. And the expertise is not limited to just ‘landlubbers’ homes but extends to luxury boats too. For Sealine’s flagship T50 and T60 models Bang & Olufsen and Sealine have developed complete packages. Full details and prices for three versions – Gold, Silver and Bronze – are available from all Sealine dealers. They vary in scale, but each package offers an integrated system for televisions, DVDs and music which can be accessed on deck and in cabins, and all operated by a single hand-held control. Pre-wiring is included at the construction stage of T50 and T60 boats which gives the ultimate ‘in-built’ design and ensures there are no trailing cables or wires to clutter the boat. Alongside that, Bang & Olufsen of Bexleyheath can retrospectively install a range of systems with the option of additional loudspeakers, again to the exact requirements of each customer, with products suitable for every Sealine boat in the range. Should you have a smaller, second boat then the arrival of the portable BeoSound 8 iPod®/iPhone®/iPad® speaker dock will enable you to transfer the famed Bang & Olufsen sound quality between your vessels. The design and robust construction of all Bang & Olufsen audiovisual equipment means that each product is ideal for onboard entertainment. For owners of larger craft, particularly Sealine’s T50 and T60 range,
Bang & Olufsen of Bexleyheath has an impressive intelligent system for storing all your favourite movies and music digitally. It’s a Kaleidescape Entertainment Server and it does away with the need to have racks full of CDs and DVDs – a real bonus for boat owners. Kaleidescape offers the facility to store all your favourite films and albums digitally. At the touch of a button on a Beo6 remote control, you can instantly call up a colourful menu of cover art onto your television screen. Finding the movie or music you want is simplicity itself. Selecting a title is easy – and Kaleidescape will even suggest some other ideas by automatically bringing a choice of alternatives onto the screen alongside your original selection. You have the option of searching for your favourite artist, actor, director or genre, and personalised collections can be set up for each member on board. Kaleidescape opens up a whole new world in terms of how you collect, store, manage and browse your film and music collection. What’s more, it has been specially-tailored to work in complete harmony with Bang & Olufsen and can be quickly installed and set up to our usual high standards for your ultimate enjoyment. One of the most impressive products from the Danish masters is the remarkable BeoSound 5 digital sound system which opens up an entire catalogue of sound. You simply sow the seeds and BeoSound 5 allows them to blossom into a display of fantastic crystal clear sound.

FRENCH CONNECTION SEALINE OWNERS MARTYN POTTER AND GRAHAM GILES DISCUSS THEIR RECENT EXPEDITION THROUGH THE FRENCH WATERWAYS.
“I think that a lot of people get told horror stories about the French canals,” explains Martyn Potter, “but it was such a great experience for us – it is definitely something that we would recommend for people to try.” For Martyn and his wife Chris, a trip is only as good as the people you go on it with, “it was our Sealine 42/5 flybridge ‘French Connection III’ with our friends Graham and Dawn and their Sealine S42 ‘Well Chilled’ – it was great because it’s always better when you explore places with friends,” he continues. “Two other couples, Pete and Maureen and Dean and Jo, also came with us – with four on each boat we were quite a big party!” The two Sealines set sail early in the year with ‘Well Chilled’ departing from the Isle of Wight and meeting the group on ‘French Connection III’ at Portsmouth, so how did they go about planning this trip? “Someone mentioned it to us a while ago, so we had some discussions to really try to plan it – well, Martyn did!” Graham says.
Although it is advisable to do some planning before you set sail Martyn admits not much research was done, “we had a few minor mishaps,” he notes, “everyone does on trips like this, that’s what makes the trip.”

“IT WAS SO EASY TO GET INTO PARIS, WE WENT TO THE EIFFEL TOWER, THE MOULIN ROUGE – WE BOUGHT METRO CARDS SO GETTING AROUND WAS EASY EVEN WHEN WE WEREN’T ON THE BOAT.” MARTYN
remarks Martyn, “in fact when you’re further down the river you’re pretty much on your own, but in the marinas there are always plenty of people ready to help.” The group continued along the Seine, occasionally stopping to visit points of interest, “it was really picturesque,” explains Martyn, “we were travelling for just over two weeks but to be honest we should have taken three or four weeks because there are so many places that we missed because of time.” Graham agrees, “We had such a fantastic experience and we’ve done so many things we haven’t done before – I think all of us got a great deal out of it in that sense.”
SEALINE MAGAZINE PAGE 13
After entering the Seine the group made their first stop at Honfleur, a picturesque fishing village before moving on to Rouen, the tidal part of the Seine where they berthed for two nights. The group knew that in order to get to Paris they would have to navigate through the French lock system or Ecluses as they are known in France. “We went into the first lock and that was a little bit tricky, you have a lot of things to think about, the depth, the ropes, the barges! We would definitely make sure that you know the barge compass – let the barges through first, they have right of way,” Graham explains. “but we didn’t see any more than around 20 barges the whole time,” Martyn adds, “having another person to help with locks is a plus and a lot of people have apprehensions about them but you do get more confident.” When travelling through France an important thing to think about is the licence for travelling French inland waterways or vignette. “We got ours from an office by the bridge in Rouen – and asked for it in our best French accents,” Graham notes. “I think that was the first place you could get them from,” adds Martyn, “the Capitainaire of marina informed us where to go – but everyone we met was really helpful.” A main passage to Paris, the river must have been busy, “not really,”
SEALINE MAGAZINE PAGE 14
“WE HAD SUCH A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE AND WE’VE DONE SO MANY THINGS WE HAVEN’T DONE BEFORE – I THINK ALL OF US GOT A GREAT DEAL OUT OF IT IN THAT SENSE.” GRAHAM
For Graham the Paris Arsenal was an exciting part of the trip, “it was brilliant, every berth in the marina we stayed in had a pump close to it, so you moor your boat and attach the pump on, and no marinas over here have that facility,” he enthuses. “It certainly was very organised,” Martyn agrees. “and it was so easy to get into Paris, we went to the Eiffel Tower, the Moulin Rouge – we bought Metro cards so getting around was easy even when we weren’t on the boat,” he continues. Would they recommend the trip to others? “Definitely! We’d even recommend it to quite new boaters, of a year or so, especially if they go with others,” Martyn explains, “it’s a lot more accessible than people make it out to be.” Having successfully cruised down the French canal system, the group are confident boat handlers but even they have some words of wisdom for those wishing to embark on a trip to Paris. “You can fuel up at Le Havre and then again at Rouen but don’t take it for granted that there will be some straight away, we waited at Le Havre for two days for fuel,” Martyn advises, “eventually the Capitainaire arranged for a fuel lorry to fill us up.” “One thing I would suggest is you must get a Navicarte – we found it really helpful as it shows you bridges, where you have to cross over,” Graham notes. With such a successful trip behind them what other excursions does the group have planned? “Nothing as of yet,” replies Martyn, “but for me it will take a lot to beat that trip, it was really special, a completely brand new experience and definitely a rewarding one!”

Finally, a navigation system without that annoying voice. “I’m not saying a word.”
Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph. Ref. 3902: “Please make a U-turn if possible.” The instruments used by sailors in the tradition of Vasco da Gama and Fernando Magellan tend to be less intrusive. As the greatest adventurers on the world’s oceans, the discoverer of the sea route to India (1497) and the first man to circumnavigate the globe (1519) were bound together by courage, navigational skills and outstanding nautical expertise. Their ability to determine time, course and position reliably enabled them to conquer a global empire. Almost 500 years later, two Portuguese businessmen took a trip to Schaffhausen: Messrs Rodrigues and Teixeira (the latter a direct descendant of the well-known mariner) were in search of a wristwatch with all the qualities of a marine chronograph. Their quest led to the birth of an icon: using the ultra-precise 74-calibre pocket watch movement, our engineers created a wristwatch of unprecedented accuracy: the Portuguese. The history of IWC began in 1868 when Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American watchmaker and entrepreneur from Boston, founded the International Watch Company in northeastManufactory in ern Switzerland. Since then, the firm’s Schaffhausen. engineers have developed legendary timepieces such as the Grande Complication, the Ingenieur line, the Portuguese models, the Pilot’s Watch family, and the Da Vinci and Aquatimer series. ‘Probus Scafusia’ (good solid craftsmanship from Schaffhausen) is a reassuringly clear expression of IWC’s philosophy. And for
over 140 years, the many technical achievements and innovations originating from Schaffhausen have set standards for the world of watchmaking. The Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is a legend of navigation in its own right. It was first unveiled as the historic Yacht Club in a gold case in 1967. Equipped with a rugged automatic movement, it was produced until the mid-1980s. Now its descendant offers an alternative to the more classical members of the Portuguese family with a contemporary, sporting flair. The precision integral to a genuine nautical instrument is expressed to perfection on the clearly laid-out dial with chapter IWC-manufactured ring. Water-resistant 6 bar with a diam- movement. eter of 45.4 mm, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is guaranteed to find a berth in the harbour of your choice, even at the height of the season. Its IWC-manufactured 89360-calibre movement with flyback function and automatic double-pawl winding guarantees precise landings by day and night. And even if you do happen to head off in the wrong direction, no one’s going to start nagging you. IWC. Engineered for men.

fter more than 120 years of innovation and design, Smythson continues to develop beautiful, colourful, luxurious and functional leather goods drawing inspiration from archive pieces and new fashion trends. It is the proud holder of three Royal Warrants and the flagship store is still based on New Bond Street, London. Smythson products are made with extreme attention to detail with the interior design as important as the exterior. All books and diaries are produced at the Smythson book binding factory in North London and stationery at the Wiltshire printers. Bags and leather accessories are crafted in small, artisan factories in Italy and Spain with leathers carefully sourced from European tanneries. It was on 29th September 1887 when Frank Smythson opened a shop at 133 New Bond Street: a ‘Stationers, Engravers, Die Sinkers, Printers & Publishers’. Customers were assured of personal attention and the best workmanship, which remain a fundamental part of the business ethic today. Frank Smythson soon found favour with an elite circle of customers and within a short time was producing stationery for Queen Victoria’s residence in the Isle of Wight. He wanted to offer his customers something better than his competitors and introduced a range of exclusive writing papers, each with their own watermark. An innovator, in 1892 he invented the pale blue Featherweight paper that has become the Smythson trademark. He put this to use by introducing the first-ever pocket diary. Early in the 20th century Smythson introduced many of the designs that have become company classics today, such as the Royal Court and Panama diaries which remain virtually unchanged since their inception, a testament to the design. From the early days, Frank Smythson was also committed to producing practical goods and travel accessories. Despite the thirties depression, Smythson continued in business. At this time it was proud to produce stationery for European Royalty and the Indian Maharajas as well as His
Majesty’s Governors in India, Canada and Australia. Book sales also grew during this period and split notebooks were introduced. One belonging to the Duke of Windsor was recently auctioned at Sotheby’s. Even with staff shortages caused by the Second World War, Smythson continued to trade while many shops closed. After, as air travel became easier, celebrities and movie stars began to flock to the shop. Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco were frequent visitors. American customers included Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby and Katherine Hepburn. The company was asked to produce black bound visitors’ books and special letterheads for President Kennedy’s funeral. Other noted clientele have included Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, Tom Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. The late years of the 20th and the early 21st centuries saw Smythson open new stores and concessions in the UK and internationally. Samantha Cameron joined the team in 1996 and soon became Creative Director. Now a consultant for the firm, she introduced iconic products such as the Fashion Diary and the sought-after seasonal fashion collections. In Autumn 2007 Smythson launched the Nancy handbag to great critical acclaim. It has been spotted on the shoulders of Dame Helen Mirren, Halle Berry and Cat Deeley to name a few and its signature hand-pleated design evolves each season. Smythson has a fascinating history. If you would like to learn more there is a museum at the flagship New Bond Street boutique in London and at the New York boutiques.

FROM REVOLUTION TO EVOLUTION SEALINE NAVAL ARCHITECTS LEAD THE WAY – RICHARD CROCKER AND HIS EXPERT TEAM REVEAL SOME OF THE LATEST ENGINEERING PLANS TO GEORGIE CORLETT.
“We want to push boundaries; you have to if you want to keep moving forwards.” – Richard Crocker

o say that Sealine’s Senior Naval Architect, Richard Crocker, and his team of experts have been busy recently is something of an understatement. Three exciting new Sealine designs are in the pipeline, due to make a splash over the next three years. And, if Sealine’s award-winning F42 launched in January is anything to go by, the team has set its standards high. Very high. A peek at the drawing board reveals the lines for the new SC42. For some three years now, the original designs from Carsten Astheimer for this boat have been looked at in great detail, it shares the same proven hull lines as its popular older sister, the striking and successful SC35 – the boat which defined a new era in forward-thinking design for Sealine. It is only now that Sealine has felt ready to unveil the SC42
design to the market, cautious because this is another uniquely defining design that promises to turn heads. This is a boat that was designed to fit a purpose, and that decisiveness defines the design. Function, as always, was the starting point for Richard and his team who take inspiration from the designs given to them. Form follows, and the result is a boat that has all the hallmarks of Sealine’s industrial practicality and sleekly modern identity. Fellow naval architect Gemma Knill is confident about this new developement, “not only will this boat deliver more social space than any other cruiser in its class, it will achieve this in a way that seamlessly blends the outdoors with the interior living space,” she explains. The entire cockpit can be opened to the elements with the flick of a switch, as the soft-

shower and TV and audio centre make this boat the perfect place to relax if the weather takes a toll on your adventure. Touches of design intelligence betray the SC42’s considered creation and underline the team’s starting point: the ultimate satisfaction of the end user. To achieve this, every detail counts; some 2100 individual concept drawings go into any one Sealine design, and each component must be carefully developed and analysed, tested, tweaked and tested again, through tanktesting, prototype development and final production. Setting this ultimate standard, Richard and his team take pride in delivering innovation in its most perfect form. With over 15 years’ experience as a naval architect, Richard’s guidance helps inspire the framework within which the team works, first identifying function and then creating form. With the latest software now at its disposal and a wealth of specialist skills between them, the team is confident that the designs will continue to push the boundaries of innovation into the future. When Richard first joined Sealine in 2006 he set out to revolutionise the hull technology, specifically the ground-breaking SC47. Now, drawing on the added expertise of his growing team, Richard is working hard to evolve the rest of the new range. Watch this space.

top convertible roof system slides all the way back to expose the four wide forward-facing helm station seats to the sun. An extendable hi-lo bathing platform drops temptingly down into the water, while the secure side deck access with its integrated cockpit closure system gives the assurance of safety for little ones onboard. The deck seating slides cleverly together so that a group of ten can share an al fresco meal; then, as the sun sets, the capacious interior stylishly accommodates seven. “The great thing about the saloon space is that it can be transformed into an additional double berth,” Gemma adds, “which complements the luxurious master cabin and five flexible berth arrangements in the mid-cabin.” With dual Volvo Penta engines, this boat begs to stretch her legs on the sun-splashed waters of the Mediterranean, where she will truly offer a home from home. Composite engineer Aymerik Cussonneau explains more, “customers can choose from standard engine options or a engine option upgrade which gives a fantastic 740 brake horsepower total and reassurance wherever they go that their boat is created to the higest standards.” Aboard SC42, the carefully designed layout and space-saving storage options work in unison with the latest technology. A full height-fridge freezer, luxurious

earning to kart from the young age of four, Jean-Eric Vergne showed a passion for the sport and a great deal of potential. To encourage him Jean-Eric’s father regularly took him karting, which is where the dream began. With accolades that include French Rotax Max runner-up, second in the European ICA championship and seventh in the world championship his success has brought him to the attention of the Federation Francaise du Sport Automobile (FFSA). With their backing, Jean-Eric moved into single seaters, winning the French Formula Campus championship in 2007 where his talent was quickly noticed and he subsequently became a member of the Red Bull Junior team. Proudly part of the Red Bull team, JeanEric has won rookie honors in both the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the West European Cup (WEC) in 2008, finishing on the podium four times. He was back for more in both Formulas in 2009, finishing on the top step in Eurocup four times and winning five in the WEC, to finish runner-up overall. After 16 years of driving Jean-Eric is ideally placed to make the breakthrough from Formula 3 to Formula 1, having been the first french man to win the F3 British championship (2010). His best season to
date – the 2010 F3 British Championship was where he dominated the prestigious British Formula 3 series. The highlight of the year came at Spa-Francorchamps, where Jean-Eric has won all three races. Over the years British Formula 3 has proved to be a springboard into Formula 1 for several stars including Mikka Hakkinen, Ayrton Senna, Martin Brundle and David Coulthard, to name a few. Although there are three potential new French F1 pilots Jean-Eric is the favourite and the team are optimistic that he will have a big start in Formula 1 with his own car in 2012. Jean-Eric accepts that drivers backed by Red Bull need to accept the high pressure to perform and his clear determination has shone through. He may be a long way from emulating the achievements of French winner Alain Prost, who claimed the Formula 1 World Championship title on four separate occasions, but Jean-Eric is young and passionate and one of the most promising racing drivers produced by France in recent times. It seems that he will go to any length to make his dream come true: to live for races, and it seems that his Formula 1 race debut may not be too far away. Sealine are proud to be your sponsors for the upcoming season what are your plans for the season ahead? To win the Renault F3.5 World Series Championship racing – there are nine races including locations such as Italy, France, Belgium and Silverstone in the UK. I am looking forward to the first race on the 17th April in Spain and also the final in October. You started training on your fathers track – how has he influenced your career? My father helped me get into karting so he’s always been a big influence. He encouraged me when I started single-seater karting at four and then when I moved into car racing at 16. You’ve been tipped as the next Lewis Hamilton for France, how do you feel about this? I’m not really thinking about F1 at the moment as I am focusing on winning the championship this year and then we will see what comes from that. I will do my best to do a good job and get to the top to win the championship – it’s a really big opportunity.
When you’re not racing what else do you like to do? I don’t have much free time but I do try to do lots of cardio training. I really like sports and do a variety including; tennis, squash, cycling, and in winter even intensive cross country skiing! I really enjoy trying lots of different things to help with my fitness and I also learn from the Redbull F1 simulator. Jean-Eric your father has just bought a Sealine F42* – what are you looking forward to most about going out on it? and more importantly will your father let you drive it? I hope so! It’s a really lovely boat and I visited the Sealine factory to see it under construction. I would love to have T60 one day – it’s such a luxurious boat, but I will have to win more races before then! When I get some free time I would like to visit my father and spend some time together onboard the F42 . *F42 supplied by Sealine dealer Vendee Plaisance on the Atlantique coast of France.

months later we took delivery, berthing at Windsor, which led us to appreciate the focus Sealine puts on design, practicality and finish.” However, after three very enjoyable years – and 300 hours – on the Thames, both Bryan and Judi developed problems with their hands. “It was restricting our ability to grip,” Bryan continued, “which was starting to make rope work difficult when mooring up in side winds.” However, after meeting Chris from Penton Hook Marine at the Southampton Boat Show they found the perfect solution – an SC35 with Volvo Joystick control. “We had already considered the SC35 to be our ideal boat,” began Judi, “but thought that due to our problems with our hands it would be too heavy to handle mooring in difficult conditions; the joystick has solved all our issues.” For Judi and Bryan the highlights of the SC35 have been numerous, “the SC35 has exceeded our expectations in every

t’s fair to say that the Wormersley’s make good use of their SC35, with the couple regularly enjoying outings on the Thames. “You can often find us at St Kats’ or enjoying trips towards Oxford or out to sea at Harwich,” adds Judi. “You definitely get a sense of excitement when you can see the open waters!” It all started with a casual visit to the Southampton Boat Show in 2004, which resulted in an impulse buy for Bryan and Judi Womersley and introduced them to the joy of boating, but their purchase wasn’t entirely practical or comfortable. It was not long after that they were on the hunt for another boat. After visiting the London Boat Show a few years later, the couple were running out of ideas until they visited the Sealine stand. “Our last call of the day was to the Sealine stand and Judi, who is a definite sun-lover, fell in love with the SC29 and its convertible roof system,” Bryan noted. “That was it,” Judi agreed “two

way. Clearly Sealine have put a major effort into quality control and design as well as our local dealer executing a very thorough pre-delivery check and handover,” Bryan enthuses. And what are their thoughts on the joystick? “I never want another boat without one!” says Bryan. “We can dock the boat alongside confidently as long as the berth is a foot longer than the SC35 as you can gently nudge the boat in sideways. You control the boat intuitively whether it be sideways, diagonally or spinning on its own axis, and it reacts immediately to any slight adjustment – especially useful on a windy day when entering or leaving locks!” He continues, “An excellent side benefit is the joystick comes with very smooth and effortless electronic steering and the sterndrives are self-centering so as soon as you move the throttle lever from neutral – which automatically disengages the joystick control – you know the steering will have reset itself to straight ahead – important in locks and other confined areas!”
But for the Womersleys one of the best aspects of their new boat is having friends over to enjoy it with them. “Entertaining is easy, it’s got a great galley – the draining channel behind the sink is a brilliant idea. Plus storage for food and wine and when we had 10 people on board for ‘And what are their lunch and dinner all that was lacking was a dishwasher!” thoughts on the the couple profess. “All joystick? “I never our boats have been called want another boat ‘Come Away With Me’ and with the SC35 we frequently without one!” get requests of “yes please!” says Bryan from bystanders as we sail past! We believe Sealine’s new design direction really leads the way – our SC35 continues to exceed expectations in every way – and the Volvo joystick control gives us stressfree boating. Ownership is really a joy!”

ate consists of a family of four galleries: Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. A public institution owned by, and existing for, the public, the Tate galleries set out to increase the public’s awareness, knowledge and understanding of British, modern and contemporary art in order to initiate interest, appreciation and enjoyment. This is achieved through the collection and an inspiring programme in and well beyond the galleries. Each gallery presents something unique, with the individual galleries focusing on a different aspect of art. The Tate Britain is the epitome of British Art and works actively to promote interest in British art internationally. The displays show an unrivalled picture of the development of art in Britain, from the time of the Tudor monarchs in the sixteenth century, to the present day. Some of the highlights include the work of William Hogarth, the animal painter George Stubbs as well as reference to the three outstanding British artists from the Romantic age; Blake, Turner and Constable. Tate Modern, national gallery of international modern art, is located in London, and represents all the major movements which started with Fauvism, characterised by paintings that used intensely vivid, non-naturalistic and exuberant colours. It also features work by the Picasso and Matisse and plays host to one of the world’s finest museum collections of Surrealism. Tate Modern also holds significant collections of Pop art including major works by Lichtenstein and Warhol, as well as Minimal art and Conceptual art.
Opening in 1988, Tate Liverpool displays work from the Tate collection as well as hosting special exhibitions, found on the gallery’s fourth floor of modern and contemporary art. The exhibitions are the coming together of national and international collections, both public and private. Some major exhibitions presented over the past five years include: ‘Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era’ (2005), ‘Peter Blake: A retrospective’ (2007) and ‘Turner Prize’ (2007). Tate St. Ives presents modern and contemporary art, often created in or associated with Cornwall, and with the dramatic views it also provides the public with the unique opportunity of viewing work in the surroundings it was actually created in. The pinnacle point for which the town of St Ives is internationally known is for its modernist art produced by artists associated with the town and its surrounding area from the 1920s onwards. With four separate locations and free admission the Tate galleries are easily accessible and allow for the visitor to delve into the world of British, modern and contemporary art. There is also a complimentary website, Tate online, where you have the option to take part in online courses from artists’ techniques and methods, to introduction to drawing techniques. LIFTS THE LID GEORGIE CORLETT JOINS THE SEALINE FACTORY TOUR IN KIDDERMINSTER TO DISCOVER THE INSIDER SECRETS BEHIND SEALINE LUXURY MOTOR BOATS.
Seeing the F42 polished, poly-wrapped and poised for departure caused some of the biggest oohs and aahs of the day. It is this familiar image that is the popular notion which most people have of a ‘new boat’, but by the end of the tour, the visitors had gained a much greater appreciation of what actually goes into crafting a new Sealine.
Ever since the first production boat rolled off the Sealine factory line in 1983, these luxury motor cruisers have been manufactured at this base in the heart of Britain. From Sealine’s very first custom-built 20ft sports cruisers of the early 1970s through to their latest awardwinning flybridge cruiser, the F42, the company has set quality and innovation at the heart of its design principles for nearly 40 years.
BUILDING BLOCK OF INNOVATION
It was the building blocks of these definitive qualities that this inquisitive group of owners were eager to come face to face with. With key members of the Sealine team assuming the roles of tour guides, the visitors were about to glimpse each meticulous element of craftsmanship that culminates in Sealine’s start to finish production process.
SEALINE MAGAZINE PAGE 39
A
n air of excited expectation emanated from the gathered Sealine owners as they greeted each other and helped themselves to mugs of steaming coffee. For a weekday morning in February, seeing some 60 Sealine enthusiasts meeting together in one place was unusual enough; what made this situation even more extraordinary was that this meeting was taking place some 77 miles from the sea… And so the first Sealine factory group tour of the year began. As the lights dimmed, a hush fell and attention turned to the warm welcome extended by Nick Powell, Sealine’s Marketing Director. This group, all members of Sealine South Coast Owner’s Club, was about to embark on a special behind the scenes adventure, as Sealine opened the doors to their 35,500sqft manufacturing and design premises in Kidderminster.
SEALINE MAGAZINE PAGE 40
Stepping through each manufacturing unit in turn, the groups began by touring the upholstery, wood-work and GRP units, taking in the stockpiles of ear-marked materials and noting the skill and dedication that the staff applied as they assembled selected components by hand. Seeing simple scatter cushions made from Sealine’s own special marine fabric through to specially crafted, hand-varnished wooden worktops for the galley was a real treat for the groups, seeing the care taken over every aspect of the build process. In the purpose-built validation laboratory, Sealine’s Engineering Test Compliance Manager, John Sayers, demonstrated just how much attention to detail Sealine pay to every inch of their boats in order to meet the highest possible standards of seaworthiness and practicality. This is where Sealine take things to the extremes. John’s audience watched wideeyed as he activated machine after machine designed to test a wide array of onboard components. Smiles of surprise spread among the audience as the seat test machine sprang to life, two jean-clad artificial lower torsos lowering and raising themselves repeatedly, mimicking the wear and tear that a typical helm station seat will experience in its lifespan. In this lab, years vanish into weeks; as the visitors peeked into the Corrosion Test Chamber, from John they learnt that 21 days in the chamber equates to an incredible 10 years at sea. All sorts of internal
and external metal fittings are subjected to this test, everything from hinges to handles to port light frames. Then, from behind a Perspex safety screen, the tension rose among the audience as 120kg of strain was mechanically applied to a metal hand rail and they anticipated a sudden ‘snap!’ Though reluctant to disappoint, John felt duty bound to explain that, for this demonstration, he was intentionally only applying a very modest amount of strain; but as with everything, Sealine have designed this part to withstand much more than they will ever really face! And while Sealine are putting their own components to the test, they are also subjecting any externally sourced parts to the same rigorous testing. John explained that the item in the Climate Test Chamber was one of several brands of ice makers undergoing a test to determine which produced the very best ice irrespective of the extremes of temperature and humidity it may face onboard, which were being accurately replicated here. Continuing the tour into the lofty assembly units, the importance of each of these individually tried and tested elements was instantly put into perspective. As the visitors walked down the semi-automatic assembly lines they took in the breathtaking reality of Sealine models taking shape. The hull of an F42 lying side on was one of the most remarkable sights of the day, with three of the Sealine staff standing inside the great shell, building up the hull by applying layer after layer of fibreglass with evident skill and care.
FINISHING TOUCHES
At the far end of the cavernous unit, a completed boat was tethered in a large pool of water, while being doused with pressure hoses from all angles. Each boat is subjected to this final immersion testing, before being polished and made ready for its departure by truck from the factory. Seeing the new F42 polished, poly-wrapped and poised for departure caused some of the biggest oohs and aahs of the day. It is this familiar image that is the popular notion which most people have of a ‘new boat’, but by the end of the tour, the visitors had gained a much greater appreciation of what actually goes into crafting a new Sealine. And that’s not forgetting one key element: the skill and passion of the 350-strong Sealine workforce that had, at every stage, been tangible throughout the tour. Our ‘tour guides’ had chatted easily and knowledgeably throughout, answering questions from the owners and offering all sorts of advice to help them make the most of their Sealine. Even as the visitors returned to reception to hand back their standard-issue safety boots and glasses, Richard was still dishing out his top tips – use only the best anti-fouling, the cheap stuff will knock two knots off your average speed by the end of the season…!
Over a late leisurely lunch everyone had time to digest the morning’s exposé and compare personal highlights… Chichester-based S34 owners Alan and Lucy McCorkindale and their four children were thoroughly enjoying this half-term treat made extra special by the fact that Alan was celebrating his 50th birthday that day. And what a way to spend it! As the children, Scott (15), Robert (13) and twins Amy and Zara (13), debated who was the better skipper – Amy’s mastery in traffic is unrivalled but Scott’s docking skills simply cannot be outdone – Mum and Dad commented: “What an exciting trip! We have been thoroughly impressed by everything we have seen, and especially by the testing lab; it gives you real confidence in the boat’s warranty to know that everything has literally been tested to destruction. Quality and safety are very important to us as customers and as a family, and it’s attention to detail in areas like this that really matter and that set Sealine apart in our experience. For the children, the opportunity to see the boats in production at different stages has been simply awesome.” For Philip and Victoria Childs, this wasn’t the first time they had visited the Sealine factory, having been invited to a private tour when they ordered their SC35, which is berthed in Southampton: “When we visited previously we were mainly discussing our order and looking at our own boat, and so we didn’t see nearly as much detail of the manufacturing or the technical development side. Today has been a really fascinating insight for us. It’s also interesting to see how the factory has been altered since we were last here to accommodate the production line for the new models.” For Mike and Anne Pickering, owners of SC29, ‘Callisto’, it was the attention to detail that left a real lasting impression: “Even the tiniest little scratch was noted and remedied. It’s all about perfection and we’ve found that carries all the way through, even after the boats have left the production line here. With Sealine, you never get the impression that they’ve sold you a boat and they’re going to leave you to it. Today’s tour has been very revealing, as this is where it all starts.”
SEALINE MAGAZINE PAGE 41
In the dedicated SC35 assembly unit, no less than seven boats had been assembled and were undergoing a final fit out. Alongside, a number of hull and cockpit moulds were lying with ‘specc’d’ electrics and decks already fitted, waiting for their turn to be sandwiched together to form yet another Sealine.

think we are known for being very social,” says Danni. “In fact I don’t think we’ve missed a Sealine Owners Club event since we joined,” she continues, “we really love going on trips with other people and the size of this boat makes it perfect for entertaining.” The Sealine T50 known as ‘Clueless’ graces the Hythe Marina on the doorstep to the Solent, although it can quite often be seen out and about. The couple together with Jon’s son Ben, try to use their boat as much as possible, “even if it’s just a quick visit to the next village,” Jon confesses, “we really love spending any free time we have on the water.” A memorable outing for the T50 and the crew of ‘Clueless’ was a trip to Dartmouth and Torquay, but it
wasn’t exactly plain sailing. “The way down was fine but once we reached Dartmouth the weather really turned. Luckily the size of this boat means you don’t get thrown about as much as you can be on a lot smaller boat, plus it installs confidence in your boating ability knowing that you’re secure,” Jon explains, “and even though it wasn’t great weather we did get to see dolphins on the Dart, which was an amazing experience!” Danni, Jon and Ben are often surfing the Solent or arranging their next outing with other Sealine owners. “Our next trip is St Vaast with the Sealine Owners Club,” says Danni, “We’re really looking forward to it.” Jon is also enthusiastic; “our friends Nick and Karen (interviewed in issue 4) and their kids are going and
Ben is coming with us so there will be loads of people we know, and loads of things for the kids to do,” he notes. ”As well as the company, enjoyment often comes down to the comfort of your boat, Danni explains,“because you walk up into the saloon, you don’t feel enclosed, and you can socialise and not miss out on the view!” Jon agrees, “you really can feel the difference,” he adds, “the patio doors on the back open right out which really brings a sense of the ocean in, plus it’s just a massive area due to the extended back.” A stunning 50 feet, the T50 may be spacious but it is a big upgrade in size from the couples previous S37 – how did they adjust to the move? “It was strange getting used to the size, it’s easy to feel quite lost at first.” Danni says. “In fact you can actually lose people on a boat this size!” Jon laughs, “we did wonder if we could handle a boat of this size but we have no problems.”
And any other plans for trips? “I would love to go back to the Channel Islands. It’s such a beautiful area – little coves, beautiful countryside – really picturesque.” Jon says. “I’d like to do the Scilly Isles,” Danni adds, “there’s always somewhere else on the list to visit. Plus any other trips with the Owners Club – we may even see you all at the ‘Big Splash’!” Although they love the size it’s the social aspect in which ‘Clueless’ really shines. Jon explains, “we’ve had quite a few people on this boat at once. At last years fireworks we had another two boats rafted onto us – it was great!” The space on the T50 must make it great for entertaining, “we are a little reknowned for parties,” he admits, “We’ve made a lot of friends through Sealine so we really enjoy seeing them all at once.” “Last year’s fireworks in Cowes was a definite highlight,” Danni agrees, “barbecues, all the kids laughing and playing, great company – there’s nothing better than sharing your boat with others.”

or the intrepid cruiser, this beguiling country harbours delights at every landfall; from the sweeping sandy bays of the south sheltered by scatterings of islands to the dark dramatic cliffs of the north and the majestic peaks beyond. Strewn along the 750 miles of Wales’ scenic coastline, you will find reminders of a historic culture that has been nurtured by Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Viking influences; shaped by the grandeur and industry of the Victorian era; and touched at every turn by its deep-rooted myths and legends. Wales is the land of King Arthur and Merlin, of dragons and castles, of unique scenery and fascinating wildlife, and – if you find the right south-westerly facing bay – some of the best weather Britain has to offer! With top class marinas and plenty of quality restaurants, the lure of Wales as a boating destination is impossible to resist for long. CARDIFF
Start in the buzzing metropolitan capital of Wales where you’ll find all the indulgences of modern city life within easy reach of the quayside; from the historic Cardiff Castle through to the Millennium Stadium, home of Welsh rugby, there’s something for all the family. Set course for Penarth Marina, which offers 24hour access thanks to the £220 million Cardiff Bay Barrage; the Cardiff Bay Visitors Centre tells the story of its creation. The shores surrounding the resulting 55-acre freshwater lake have seen huge regeneration investment and a lively leisure development. In contrast to this modern marvel, the neighbouring town of Penarth retains its distinctly Victorian roots, with the fine period architecture and panoramic promenade.
Head west to Swansea, gateway to the stunning Gower peninsula and the open waters of Carmarthen Bay. The award-winning Maritime Quarter is home to Swansea Marina, a number of shops and restaurants, and the interesting National Waterfront Museum which charts 300 years of Wales’ history in an interactive environment. For literary fans, Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Centre offers a year-round programme of arts events. The seas are particularly clean along this coastline and there are sandy bays aplenty to take advantage of nearby, including the expanse of Oystermouth beach which shelters under Mumbles Head. Gathered from the many sandy beaches of the Gower, cockles have been a famous local fare of these parts since Roman times and they are still popular at the area’s local produce markets today.
MILFORD HAVEN
Milford Marina provides superb shelter as you round the most south-westerly extremes of the Welsh coast. This town draws eclectic influence from its origins as an 18th century port that has at various times been a base for fishermen, the Royal Navy and commercial shipping. Along Nelson Quay more contemporary maritime influences are evident, with an array of waterside cafés, restaurants and shops to tempt the modern mariner. Visitors here will reap rewards whether they wish to explore the local area by boat or by foot: cruise inland on the 22 miles of Milford Haven’s navigable sheltered waters or discover the delights of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, which takes a route right past the marina.

NEYLAND
Nestled inland from the entrance to Milford Haven, the Yacht Haven at Neyland offers an alternative base from which to explore this estuary. At the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, this marina offers a quiet spot in pretty surroundings, with a great choice of waterside pubs in the area. The national park is home to all sorts of wildlife; otters and kingfishers can even be spotted among the tree-lined creeks.
ABERYSTWYTH
This picturesque pit stop in the middle of the Welsh coastline has plenty to make a stay here worthwhile, with a 100+ berth marina set against an attractive harbour backdrop. The town itself nestles between three hills; a promenade spanning the waterfront with brightly coloured Victorian houses and a somewhat stubby pier all add character. There’s a real depth of history in this town, from the 6000BC Iron Age hill fort on Pendines Hill to the 1902 narrow gauge railway that leads 12 miles inland. Visitors can take this train to the end of the line to visit the impressive Devils Bridge Waterfalls, which can also be reached via the area’s excellent mountain biking trails that follow the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. Back at the seafront, ascend the 420ft zigzag path to the top of Constitution Hill for great views across Cardigan Bay.

PWLLHELI
held in nearby Abersoch, Europe’s largest wakeboard and music festival, while surfers will delight at the 4 miles of breaks found year-round at Hell’s Mouth. Pwllheli itself regularly plays host to international dinghy sailing events, and as a small market town has sufficient bustle and amenities to fulfil the visiting cruiser’s requirements.
HOLYHEAD
Approaching Wales’ largest island, Anglesey, presents plenty of options for the adventurous cruiser. A circumnavigation of the island’s seaward sides will uncover plenty of hidden gems. Red Wharf Bay is a highlight for kite- and wind-surfers, while the colony of birds after which the island is named makes Puffin Island a real must for wildlifewatchers. If you’re visiting in October, don’t miss Trearddur Bay’s annual Oyster Festival, which celebrates a variety of food produce from across the island. Holyhead Marina makes a great berth for a visit to Anglesey; it’s also an ideal jumping off point for Dun Laoghaire, Liverpool or Douglas. The marina boasts 24-hour access and a range of on-site facilities.
CAERNARFON
Tucked inside the entrance to the notorious Menai Straits which cleave Anglesey from mainland Wales, Caernarfon is dominated by its castle and historic walled town. Dating back to 1283 and a symbol of Edward I’s conquest of Wales, the castle is a World Heritage Site and is perhaps the most famous of all castles in Wales. Berth at Victoria Dock and step ashore to explore. Fittingly perhaps, the approach to Caernarfon is a difficult one, as if offering the town’s battlements additional fortification. Constantly shifting, the sand banks off Caernarfon can trap the unwary yachtsman, so plan ahead!
Run north towards the shadows of Snowdonia National Park where the rugged coastline of North Wales appears, and dock at the award-winning 400-berth Pwllheli Marina. By sea, this area has exciting tidal patterns to master, while by land it offers wild terrain with huge potential for keen walkers and cyclists. From its vantage point on the sheltered southern side of the Lleyn Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Pwllheli is a superb base for family breaks. Watersports enthusiasts Known as Y Felinheli in Welsh and sometimes called Menai Marina, this will love the annual Wakestock festival
PORT DINORWIC
quaint little fishing port in the middle of the Menai Straits is the only port in the UK to have been granted Grade II listed status. It gives easy access to the city of Bangor, just 5 miles away. Just north of the marina, the Britannia Bridge spans the Straits, connecting Anglesey with the mainland. A passage through the 15-mile-long Menai Straits requires some careful pre-planning. Although the waters may look calm at times, tides can run at up to 8 knots through The Swellies and a daylight approach during slack water is essential unless you are already familiar with these waters. Passing Beaumaris and progressing into open seas, ease off the throttle and put out the mackerel lines; this is a great spot for a catch!
CONWY
The walled town of Conwy is a true Welsh outpost, guarded by an imposing medieval castle which presides over the river. Boaters seeking a berth here are spoilt for choice: Conwy Marina has 500 sheltered pontoon berths, while the exclusive Deganwy Marina offers 180 berths in a luxury development. The narrow streets of the old town make for exciting wandering while absorbing the history of this 800-year old town. In a tradition that dates back to 1290, Conwy’s historic Honey Festival takes place each September. Don’t forget to stop by Britain’s smallest house, a 19th century fisherman’s cottage just 10ft in height and 6ft wide! Backed by the Snowdonian mountain range this is certainly a picturesque spot with some of the most panoramic offerings in North Wales. On a clear day, a trip to the top of the nearby Great Orme reveals some breath-taking vistas in all directions, while a foray up-river to the beautiful Bodnant Gardens gives way to yet more delightful views. Whether Conwy is your final or your first stop on your Welsh adventure, rest assured it has plenty to offer.

A
t 600mph, 2,000ft in the air and only feet apart from neighbouring aircraft, life in the Red Arrows’ aerobatic display team is a death-defying experience – quite literally in some cases. When they perform what is known as a ‘vixen break’, the pilots subjects themselves to forces of 7g. At 8g, their aircraft start to fall apart. And if the idea of holding formation at such a speed is not evidence enough, earlier this year two of the famed RAF flyers collided in mid-air over Crete while conducting some of their six months of annual training. Fortunately, both pilots made it safely to the ground, one ejecting and suffering minor injuries, the other making a normal landing.
It is, quite frankly, amazing that this does not happen more often. That it has hardly ever happened in the Red Arrows’ 45-year history and over its 4,000 or more displays is a testament to the skills of the pilots selected to fly with them, widely recognised as the best air display team in the world. Ever practical, the team even takes a spare jet when it travels the world to perform, so the show can go on – and since they fly in transit in the UK at around only 1,000ft to avoid air-traffic control restrictions, even seeing them in formation en route to a display can be spectacular. There are, however, no back-up pilots – although each pilot serves only a three-year

move in the shape of the legendary World War Two Spitfire fighter plane. It was, Murphy has said, partly a tribute to his grandfathers, both of whom were serving pilots. But whether spectators would appreciate the significance of such a manoeuvre is perhaps in doubt, given that all nine Hawks will, as one, have just performed a roll, and will then do another before breaking formation. Those on the ground may be similarly only passingly distracted by the fact that the Red Arrows has this year seen its first female pilot take to the skies. Yes, the competition for Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Moore may have been tough – completing the necessary 1,500 flying hours, and

tour of duty with the team, there just aren’t any good enough to be held in reserve. Their performances, after all, are chiefly expressions of flying skill – those BaE Hawks they fly are so basic, relative to modern fighter-jets, that they lack onboard computer and even radar, while the underside cannon housing is filled with highly flammable dyed diesel, released into the exhaust to make the aircrafts’ characteristic red, white and blue smoke trails. Indeed, the Lincolnshire-based Red Arrows’ routines may keep evolving in other ways – in honour, for example, of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Squadron Leader Ben Murphy (aka Red 1) recently introduced a

at least one front line fast-jet operational tour and then having beaten 28 other candidates also trying to join up. But when you are watching a low-level pass, really, it is more your heart than your head that is in control. And you may well be attempting to do that from inside your mouth – especially since the Red Arrows have perfected their entrance, always making their first appearance from behind the waiting crowds below. Small wonder that the Diamond Nine, as the flyers are sometimes known, carry ‘eclat’ as their motto, French for ‘brilliance’. Nor is it any wonder that the Red Arrows have such a long and esteemed pedigree. Before the Red Arrows came the Black Arrows: in 1956, No.111 Squadron’s official RAF display team performed in France and, due to their all-black aircraft, were dubbed ‘les fleches noires’. They were bold arrows too, performing a loop and barrel roll of some 22 jets at the Farnborough Air Show in 1958, a world-record for aircraft in formation that still stands. Nor did the team go red from there. In 1961 the Black
Arrows were replaced by 92 Squadron’s Blue Diamonds, comprising 16 blue Hunter jets. Nor were they the RAF’s only display team – there were the Firebirds, the Red Pelicans, the Yellowjacks... Three years later, however, all teams were amalgamated in order to free up more pilots for operational duties, and it was ‘red smoke on’, as Red 1 commands his team to start one of their distinctive smoke trails. The Red Arrows’ name was an amalgamation too, taken from the Black Arrows and the Yellowjacks – whose aircraft, despite their name, were actually painted red for better visibility in the sky. ‘Les Fleches Rouges’ were airborne, counting the split seconds and half-inches in their necessarily extremely precise world. It is probably the red flying suit that the Red Arrows pilots most aspire to. That is understandable. A flying suit in red is the badge of having completed your Red Arrows’ training. Until graduation you must wear a standard one in green. It sorts the men (and the women) from the boys.

PRODUCT AND COMPONENT TESTING OF SEALINE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING:
HOW ARE SEALINE’S NEW DESIGNS TESTED SO THAT THEY ARE SAFE AND PRACTICAL, AS WELL AS EXCITING AND INNOVATIVE? SEALINE’S SENIOR NAVAL ARCHITECT, RICHARD CROCKER, explains how Sealine have a dedicated testing team that works closely with the PD&E department to create exciting, safe and robust new products which can challenge the market with innovative ideas, and provide many years of confident and rewarding cruising for customers.

Finite Element Analysis of a fuel tank
DESIGN TESTING Design testing covers the analytical assessment of the engineering design and associated components. Before the detailed design team can start work in earnest, a number of calculations have to be performed to ensure that not only is the boat safe and legal, but that the final vessel assembly is durable enough to withstand all the loadings expected from a seagoing craft. Previous magazine articles have covered
Load testing of fuel tank structure within hull
topics such as scale models testing of the hulls, Finite Element Analysis of structures, Computation Fluid Dynamics on aerodynamic surfaces, but these are just the large global engineering foundations of the boat assembly. At Sealine we take nothing for granted and ensure that as many parts of the product are fully design validated before the design phase is complete. Fuel tanks are one area where design validation is carefully applied.
Large moulded tanks which can hold up to 1500 litres and withstand 1200kg of fluid mass are of obvious concern for any builder. Couple this tank load to vertical hull accelerations of 2g and the forces on the tank and restraint assembly become problematic. For these reasons, Sealine incorporate a design phase which uses numerical calculations to validate loading scenarios on the tanks and foundations. Fuel tanks are just one example where

carefully considered before the mockup schedule is prepared.
MOCK-UPS The generation of a mock-up is to ensure that the key ergonomics for components are satisfactory. Although modern CAD systems are excellent at creating detailed visual and anthropometric data interpretation, there is still no substitute for full-size geometry and surface to check for potential interferences. Mock-ups are also very useful for spatial awareness and visualisations, something which a
COMPONENT TESTING The testing of individual parts, fabrics, raw materials and assemblies is of critical importance for any new product. A professional approach to component testing requires a great deal of time and investment to succeed, but this is a small price to pay compared to expensive field fixes for failed components. Therefore the selection of components and materials is a very critical consideration for the development teams. Marine

flat computer screen is just not capable of achieving. When developing a multi-million pound new product, it is essential that mock-ups are utilised for new concepts and new technologies. Mock-ups are created in various ways; some are simple plywood assemblies which are then trampled on by numerous people who provide qualitative feedback. Entire cabins if not entire deck areas are sometimes created in a mixture of plywood and CNC-machined foams to create full-size walk-through of accommodation and deck areas. Mock-ups are generally created early in the design phase so that any changes are concluded before the start of detailed design. Tooling of FRP components is an expensive business, and any areas of perceived risk which may result in re-tooling are
components come at a premium, the harsh environment and punishing lifestyle of any offshore yacht require only the finest raw materials and high quality assemblies that are capable of enduring the application. TESTING LAB Sealine has taken the bold step of investing in a state-of-the-art component testing laboratory at their manufacturing facility in Kidderminster. This laboratory houses numerous testing appliances and facilities to verify suitability regarding materials, finishes, construction methods, design loadings, durability and application of design standards. Long-term test cycles which run for 24 hours a day can help simulate 30 years of lifespan in just a few weeks. These results enable Sealine to fully test
components before they are even fitted to a prototype vessel, let alone utilised for serial production. Testing of individual components is important, but the right components can be installed in the wrong manner, which means that manufacturing processes and sub-assemblies require testing before production. Large furniture assemblies such as wardrobe or galley modules are tested on shock rigs at Sealine, not just to ensure that the heavy slamming loads, imparted on the furniture by a strong sea, will not cause damage, but to make sure that no nuisance squeaks or rattles will occur. Incorrect application of adhesives or poor surface preparation can result in early fatigue failure of assemblies, and thus simulated manufacturing grades are tested to formulate a picture of potential failures. All Sealine upholstery is manufactured in house, the materials and stitched assemblies are important to create a comfortable, practical and stylish interior and exterior solution to seating and berthing. Cushions and backrests for seats and dinettes are well used, constantly being chafed, loaded, unloaded, squashed and enduring spillages, sunlight, etc. To ensure that our upholstery can cope with this, a great deal of testing is performed in the laboratory before any fabric or stitch detail can be considered for a prototype, yet alone a production craft. PRODUCT TESTING Vessel testing at Sealine takes place at our Saxon Wharf facility in Southampton, UK. Initial systems’ testing is undertaken at the factory to ensure that all electrical, mechanical and engineering systems aboard the vessels are fully tested before each craft is despatched beyond the factory doors. Many systems and parts of the vessel are tested at the factory, however the most important aspect is the sea trial programme, which for a new class

of vessel is a rigorous schedule which lasts for approximately one year and generates in excess of 350 engine hours while testing. The CE certified design and manufacturing standards require a high degree of boat testing in conjunction with surveys, submitted calculations and verification. All new products are tested and inspected by an affiliated certification authority, in the case of Sealine the Royal Yachting Association. The RYA is the notified body which verifies that the standards of design and manufacture are equivalent to the requirements of the EU Recreational Craft Directive, and are legally compliant to be sold in EU countries or beyond. Yet Sealine do not just stop at basic required certification – we are proud to design our craft to standards in excess of the legal requirements in some areas for reasons of durability and experience gained through 40 years of manufacturing. Survey and inspections of prototype craft are performed in numerous areas such as stability tests and drainage which are examined as part of the certification. Certification of proprietary components such as deck hatches, engines, navigation equipment are all required to be submitted. Evidence of structural design, glue joint testing, lamination samples, ash tests of laminates are all supplied before the first of class boat is actually built. All Sealine products are designed in accordance with ISO design category B with respect to stability and buoyancy, and category B (offshore) for primary hull and deck structures. Proving the design criteria is met on paper is easy, but actually proving the finished vessel meets the standards in reality can only be attained one way – testing, and testing to design category B means taking the boat out in 4m seas, Beaufort scale force 8. You might think that volunteers for such tests are scarce, but not at Sealine – we have willing volunteers all year round to ensure that our product is fit for purpose and will not only look sublime at a boat show, but will be capable of withstanding the brutal elements of force 8 gales and associated sea states. UNIQUE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING Sealine have always been proud of our product innovations. Over many years
The new F42 with class leading saloon and flybridge
Sealine have created unique design such as: Extending cockpit system, SC roof system, Canopy clamshell feature and flexible cockpit seating, just a few of our best innovations that have made it into production. Many concepts never make it beyond the drawing board, sometimes after testing phases, sometimes because of cost implications, but always after careful consideration with the end user in mind. Novel concepts for features within the vessel are important, but Sealine have recently begun to incorporate new technologies within the product range which are not only integral to the product architecture, but also drive forward the desire to develop products with leadingedge materials, manufacturing processes and customer-focused benefits. One example of such application of quality engineering which Sealine are particularly proud of is the saloon screen assembly of the F46 and F42 models. The screen mullion components are unique to Sealine in terms of manufacturing and performance. Traditional flybridge craft are manufactured using a single component deck mould with the flybridge incorporated, or sometimes a separate flybridge moulding added later on during the build. The internal lining of such manufacturing methods were very labour intensive, and many examples offer compromised helm and saloon visibility. Sealine investigated the possibility of changing the game when they were in the early stages of the F46 design phase. The requirements were simple; produce the largest possible glass surface area to create the best views from the saloon and helm; at the same time Sealine wished to create a visually strong architectural image of the screen assembly. Early concept designs suggested that a complete wrap-round assembly was feasible, and with careful tooling details we could create an aesthetically clean finish with simple lines and structural presence. Structural analysis of the design had precluded the need for using any carbon fibre at an early stage, thus a design using conventional polyester and glass reinforcement was developed. Traditional hand laminated moulding techniques would not have given the correct mechanical properties and would be too labour intensive, so Sealine engineering in conjunction with experienced aerospace development teams
embarked on a mould tool development programme with ambition. The final geometry created required an assembly with acutely curved glass with compound curves, difficult to manufacture and install. Although toughened glass is very strong, it is brittle, so it was important to divorce the glass from the structural loadings so as not to stress the glazing panels unnecessarily. Finite Element Analysis was used to create a laminate which could withstand all the forces from the flybridge and any design pressures due to vessel motions. To create a set of mouldings which were then glued together would again be labour intensive and required finishing repairs or cloaking with panels, which was out of the question. Our quest was to manufacture a set of components which were easy to assemble, visible and aesthetically appealing. The process Sealine chose to adopt for the manufacture is called RTM light, Resign Transfer Moulding, a process which injects the resin under vacuum conditions into the mould tool. This means resin quantities injected into the tool are accurately measured so as to produce the correct volume fraction of reinforcement material, which provides the optimum strength, weight and cost of the component. The shape of the tool required to generate the visible architecture resulted in a highly complex three-part tool, which is physically very large, and required delicate precision to laminate. The RTM light process requires all the fabric and foam cores to be loaded into the tool before resin injection, and due to the complex nature of the mould is a highly skilled job. The assembly of front and side screen mullions on the deck creates a solid foundation for the saloon glazing and flybridge mouldings. The mullion assembly is designed to withstand deck forces equivalent to eight tonnes of pressure and with minimal deflections has proven in testing to behave exactly as designed. The application of RTM light mouldings in this area of marine design is unprecedented. Many vessels utilise advanced moulding techniques and materials – all this is done with one simple purpose, to create the best cruising experience for Sealine customers.

Sealine International collected the coveted award for ‘Best Flybridge Motor Boat under 55 feet’ from the IPC Motor Boat of the Year awards held at the Savoy Hotel in London this year. The winning F42, launched in September 2010, has received plaudits from both press and customers alike. In making their decision the judges from the two leading motor boating titles Motor Boat and Yachting and Motorboats Monthly had this to say about Sealine’s award-winning model: “It was a unanimous decision, when a boat has so many class bests in a market already packed with exceptional craft, when it succeeds so completely in its goal to be the hardest working flybridge on the water then you have to bow to the inevitable – there is only one winner and it is the Sealine F42.” Offering a truly innovative design, the design of the F42 has transformed the way space and light can been used on a flybridge boat of this size. As well as this the boat offers a great amount of space which is perfect for entertaining and can sleep five in comfort in a very flexible living space. It also has the advantage of joystick controlled Volvo IPS engines for maximum manoeuvrability. Chris O Connor, Sealine’s Managing Director, said: “we are absolutely thrilled to receive this very prestigious award. It is an endorsement of the hard work and dedication of the team at Sealine who have created this award-winning boat; from the designers and naval architects to the production staff at our factory in Kidderminster, all of whom have helped make this boat such an enormous success since its launch last September.”

The SC42 is a bold and innovative new design which offers more social space than on any other cruiser of this size. Perfect for outdoor living, the SC42 can be transformed from wind-in-the-hair boating to full protection in a matter of seconds. The craft features a unique full-length, soft-top convertible roof system and large opening side windows which let in the light and the fresh air. One of the most significant design features of the SC42 is the cockpit layout which makes maximum use of the full beam width of the boat for seating and entertaining. There are four wide forward-facing seats at the helm, a fully integrated dashboard, plus a wet bar and fold-away TV behind the seats. To the rear the flexible seating and dining arrangement offers comfortable dining for 10 either as one large group or on two separate tables.
This space can easily be transformed into rear- or forward-facing sunbathing areas so that those on board can enjoy the sun and sea next to the hi-lo private bathing platform, watch films and socialise with others in the cockpit. Engine options include stern drives with joystick control or full IPS. The luxurious forward master cabin features a separate shower and toilet compartments, while the three-berth mid cabin offers five different sleeping options plus an en-suite shower area with a bi-fold door separating the toilet. The saloon has space for six to dine in comfort and the galley, with its full height fridge freezer, has over 2.5 metres of worktop and plenty of storage.
