North Durham Entrepreneurial Youth

Uxbridge youth Marie Boddington started her company ‘Marie’s Swim School’, and Madison Holder used her love of theatre to create ‘The Ultimate Character Experience’. Support needed to incubate their ideas and create self employment came through Barb Smith and Emily Morrison of Brock Youth Centre. ‘Cool Cow’ is a youth run ice cream parlour located in Beaverton providing “hands-on” to teach youth business skills.

INSPIRING AND SUPPORTING ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN NORTH DURHAM Durham Region, one of Canada’s growing economic communities, offers many development and business opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs to enhance their skills and capitalize on the economic growth, job creation, and revitalization happening across the region. There are many ways to engage—particularly during Small Business Week, taking place from Oct. 18 to 24, 2015, for those who want to get involved and participate with local business organizations. The Building Business Forum (BBF), on Oct. 29, 2015, connects business owners with business development organizations, providing a platform for networking, learning, and collaborating. The Regional Municipality of Durham, in partnership with the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, started this annual event to inspire and support entrepreneurship in north Durham. Now in its fourth year, the BBF continues to engage individuals, creating a more integrated and innovative community by encouraging engagement amongst the talented labour pool in north Durham, building a strong economy and expanding upon opportunities for entrepreneurship in Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge. For more information on rural economic development initiatives in Durham Region, visit www.investdurham.ca. Do It In Durham celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) in Durham Region and provides a platform for business innovators to come together to learn, grow, share and connect. Taking place Nov.16 to 22, 2015, GEW is the world’s largest celebration of go-getters and offers them an opportunity to engage and collaborate with like-minded entrepreneurs. With activities ranging from networking events, large-scale competitions and educational seminars, GEW helps inspire exciting opportunities and offers a chance to connect with mentors and peers. In 2014, Do It In Durham was awarded the GEW Canada Trailblazer badge for hosting more than 40 events with 800 attendees celebrating GEW. If you are interested in attending the 2015 event, visit http://doitindurham.biz for more information. Vibrant North Durham: An Economic Development Plan 2013-2018 is a comprehensive five year plan to implement economic development thinking, processes and projects in north Durham. Developed in partnership with Durham Region and the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, the plan represents a co-ordinated approach to economic development, identifying four strategies as the foundation to building a dynamic local economy: ensure north Durham townships are open for business; inspire and support entrepreneurship; create a vibrant future for young adults; and build a stronger rural and small-town identity. For more information, the Vibrant North Durham Economic Development Plan can be found online at www.investdurham.ca.

WHAT’S YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL DNA? By Roger Prince, Prince Leadership Group

As a Business Owner and Entrepreneur one of your keys to success is to ‘Know Thyself’. Why? Understanding your ‘Entrepreneurial traits’ enables you to balance your core strengths with others. How does one ‘assess’ their own traits? Are all Entrepreneurs the same? One might think so with most business programs in our education system being designed to one size fits all. Why do we think that all Entrepreneurs have the same drive, determination and DNA? To put it bluntly, they don’t. Joe Abraham, the founder of BOSI Global, an operating partner to venture-backed and owner operated companies researched over 1,000 companies and confirmed that entrepreneurs are not all ‘wired’ the same way. In his book ‘Entrepreneurial DNA, Joe suggests that entrepreneurs fall into four distinct types of ‘Entrepreneurial DNA’- Builder, Opportunist, Specialist and Innovator. Each type leverage strengths, weaknesses and decision making through a unique lens. So what does this all mean? For centuries, the approach to entrepreneurship has been – what worked for one entrepreneur will work for every entrepreneur – because after all, entrepreneurs are all the same. This research has proven that entrepreneurs come in very different profiles. Some of us are Innovator-Builders. Others are Specialist-Opportunists. Knowing your DNA and the DNA of those surrounding you is mission critical to selecting the business, strategy and team best suited for you. Just because it worked for Richard Branson (Opportunist-Builder) or Bill Gates (Specialist-Builder), doesn’t mean it will work for you. Whether you are Richard Branson, Donald Trump or Mark Zuckerberg knowing your Entrepreneurial DNA ensures that your team has skills which balance with yours. In understanding the DNA of you and your team, you are in a better position to determine what’s needed for high ‘profitable’growth. If you are curious what type of entrepreneur you are, I highly recommend that you take the free assessment. You will find the link on my home page http://www.princeleadershipgroup.com/ Interested in what Joe Abraham has to say? Watch his Ted Talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsU9N6A18sY&feature=youtu.be Like to see Joe speak here in Toronto? Interested in a team assessment? Want to know more? UXBRIDGE FAIR NETWORKING By Rick Hannah, Uxbridge Fall Fair

Director,

The 151st Uxbridge Fall Fair will focus on continuing the trend of the first 150 years, preserving and showcasing our agricultural heritage. This year’s theme is “Cultivating Future Farmers.” Where would the Fair be and in fact, all of us be without them? In 2013 we celebrated 100 Years of 4H in Canada. This organization provides a rallying

point for our “Future Farmers”. The Durham West 4H is a hive of activity of all sorts for our Future Farmers.

BARRON RIVER CANYON, ALGONQUIN PARK, THANKSGIVING WEEKEND By Kim Davis, Owner and Chef at Lemon Tree Fine Foods

I haven’t gone camping in a long time. To be honest, I prefer my creature comforts to sleeping on hard ground in a flimsy tent with nothing but a bit of nylon between me, and a bear looking for breakfast. I’ve done my share of camping, the roughing-it kind where there’s not a human to be found except the crazy person who convinced me to go. I don’t ‘do’ camping now, but I do remember how unforgettable the trips I did do, were. One such trip, the Barron River Canyon, was ambitious, uphill all the way with three portages. My mother’s idea. The goal, Opalescent Lake. We paddled up river then tackled the portages. It was getting late and we were losing the light. We made camp in the dark. Arriving somewhere new in the dark, it’s a nice surprise next morning. We woke to discover we’d landed on a swath of pink granite with a gorgeous view. Our Cork Lake day trip was picture perfect. The second night, the wind kicked up and the skies threatened rain. It was October after all. The next day was the last day the park was open. If we didn’t get out today, there would be no one looking for us, no rescue. No one had a cell phone back then. We woke to white caps and a howling head wind! Our only option was to paddle like mad and pray we didn’t tip the canoe. Soggy and running out of steam, we paddled down the Barron River, the rich pink-striped granite cliff face rising above us, glowing in the evening sun. Back at the car, our arms ached and our knees were wobbly, but we’d escaped the dust and noise of city life for a few days and found beauty, silence and a fresh perspective. This season, if someone asks you to do something crazy, say yes. You may have an unforgettable experience.

BROCK YOUTH CENTRE

By Barb Smith, Entrepreneurial Outreach Coordinator Staff at the Brock Youth Centre have been very busy this past year working with incredible talented young entrepreneurs. Staff from BYC have spoken to hundreds of students throughout North Durham about Entrepreneurship, creating opportunity and turning their ideas into viable businesses. From speaker forums to Business Idea Competitions, several talented youth were able to garner the support needed to incubate, launch their ideas and generate income for themselves.

Marie Boddington Summer Company Candidate

Three exceptional young ladies at BYC were catapulted into their business following acceptance into the ‘Summer Company’ a program initiated through the BACD (Business Advisory Centre Durham). One of the successful candidates, Marie Boddington from Uxbridge, explained how the competition benefited her, “ It was a great experience. I learned a lot, I made valuable new contacts and the experience has really helped me to get my summer business ‘Marie’s Swim School’ off the ground.” Her extensive qualifications as a Certified National Lifeguard, a Red Cross Swimming Instructor and a Life Saving Instructor and the business skills she has learned provided the foundation for a successful business with many happy customers! Madison Holder Young Entrepreneur

Madison Holder, a Grade 9 graduate at Uxbridge Secondary School used her love of theatre to create “The Ultimate Character Experience”. Her business model includes entertaining children at birthday parties in various Princess character roles. ‘Frozen’ never had a prettier ‘role model’ as Madison brings her winning personality and genuine talent to her young ‘ charges’ who all have the Princess ‘within’. (www. facebook.com/TheUltimateCharacterExperience) BYC’s most recent ‘client’ is a youth run ice cream parlour located in Beaverton. Cool Cow relocated from downtown Port Perry with the help of local entrepreneurs, Terry and Kelly Sellers, who recognized a need for a hands-on operation to teach budding young entrepreneurs about business. The Youth Centre supported this concept which currently has 7 participants aged 14-23 in the program. With BYC staff as advisers, the youth are learning the finer details of inventory control, cash management, marketing and communications as well as exceptional customer service paving the path for future entrepreneurs and the development of excellent employable skills and experience. This fall and winter will see Emily Morrison (Enterprise Coordinator) and Barb Smith (Outreach Coordinator) in North Durham high schools engaging youth and encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.
