Women in Business - Facts

Women have come a long way since joining the cult of domesticity prevailed as their only career option. The end of WWII saw more women entering the workforce than in any other time in history, and the feminist movement of the 1970’s sparked new legislation that nurtured equal opportunity employment. From the 1990’s to early 2000’s, women gained even more traction in business with the percentage of female entrepreneurs rising steadily, if not dramatically.

While there’s still a ways to go before equal opportunity is status quo, today glass ceilings are more brittle, and wage gaps are closing, thanks in no small part to the continuous efforts of women entrepreneurs and business owners.

Check out these facts and see the integral role women play in today’s world of business, despite (or perhaps because of) the challenges they have – and still – face.

FACTS:

Canada is home to 950,000 self-employed women, who make up about one-third of all self-employed people here.

Around the world, women are paid less than men, in most countries earning on average 60%-75% of men’s wages (2015). According to Industry Canada, 47% of small to medium sized businesses are entirely or partly owned by women.

51% of Aboriginal-owned small to medium sized businesses are owned partly or wholly by women.

When a woman does decide to start a business, she tends to stay in business longer (i.e. their survival rates are higher).

Majority female-owned firms were just as likely to seek to finance as majority male-owned firms in 2007 but were less likely to be approved for debt financing than majority male-owned firms.
