accomplished The Network of Executive Women marked its 10th anniversary year with a bit of fanfare and a lot of hard work. Membership increased 51 percent to more than 5,000. Regional groups grew from 16 to 19. Regional attendance increased 33 percent. And national sponsorship contributions grew 32 percent. The Network launched new initiatives, including the NEW CPG Retail Diversity Forum, Diversity Hall of Fame, a hugely successful social media drive, a YouTube channel and a 10th anniversary awareness campaign that made more than 2 million lasting impressions on our industry.

Eight individuals and two companies were honored with the Network’s William J. Grize Diversity Hall of Fame Award September 19, 2011 at the NEW Leadership Summit: Linda Dillman of QVC, honored for her work at Walmart; Jeri Dunn, retired global CIO for Bacardi, honored for her work at Tyson Foods; Tom Greco of PepsiCo; Don Knauss of The Clorox Company, also recognized for his work at Coca-Cola; Jeff Noddle, retired CEO of SUPERVALU; Kay Palmer of J.B. Hunt; Judy Spires of Kings Super Markets, formerly with Acme Markets; James White of Jamba Inc., honored for his work at Safeway; Delhaize America; and Procter & Gamble.

A decade to
celebrate
and build on The Network’s 10th anniversary campaign honored the past, looked to the future and touched tens of thousands of industry executives in 2011. We honored 10 diversity heroes at our NEW Leadership Summit in September. Distributed 100,000 copies of our commemorative CPG Retail Diversity magazine in the fall. Filled our online Time Machine with histories, predictions and more than 450 videos and photos. Our celebration was focused forward. At the NEW Leadership Summit and regional events coast to coast, we looked at the challenges and solutions of the next 10 years.

In 2011, the Network launched regional groups in Atlanta and the Pacific Northwest and laid the groundwork for two more groups in Phoenix and Houston — a record for regional development. Nearly 9,000 Network members and supporters — students, associates, managers, senior executives and CEOs — attended 34 learning events hosted by NEW regions in the U.S. and Canada, an attendance increase of 33 percent. Thousands more attended informal mixers and outings. The Network’s regional groups don’t just produce great events, they provide leadership opportunities for more than 500 regional officers and committee members plus mentoring and outreach programs that benefit the entire industry.

of the minds The industry’s best minds and boldest leaders meet at the Network’s national conferences. In 2011 we hosted three unique industrywide events: Rosalind Brewer of Walmart, Sandy Douglas of Coca-Cola and Robert Abernathy of Kimberly-Clark addressed the NEW Multicultural Workforce Conference March 1-3 in Atlanta; media mogul Arianna Huffington and SUPERVALU CEO Craig Herkert headlined the NEW Executive Leaders Forum July 19-21 in Los Angeles; and the NEW Leadership Summit September 19-20 in Orlando looked at “the next 10 years” with three keynotes, 12 breakout sessions, and half-day NEW Leadership Academy and NEW Corporate Athlete workshops.

Network education programs reach thousands of senior executives, middle managers, emerging leaders and college students every year. More than a thousand Network members participated directly in our NEW Leadership Academy training webinars in 2011, with hundreds more watching at “lunch and learn” events or online in our Study Hall. Other initiatives included our ongoing Knowledge Bank series, an expanded trio of monthly newsletters and original research like our landmark report, “The Changing Consumer and the Workforce Imperative.” The Network is a leading source of industry and diversity news. Articles, interviews and blogs increased 71 percent in 2011; Network videos nearly tripled; and social media postings increased tenfold. NEW expanded its education commitment in November by hiring industry veteran Kathy Bayert as director of learning and advisory services. 13

Five thousand members are at our heart The Network’s success is measured in the people we touch and the partners we support. In 2011, Network membership grew 51 percent to more than 5,000; regional and national sponsor support grew 32 percent to $2.1 million; website traffic increased 66 percent and our social media fans and followers increased by a factor of five. In 2011, the Network introduced a new top-tier Foundation sponsor level and five companies quickly stepped up: Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble and Walmart. These companies and nearly 70 other national Network sponsors are sold on the values of the Network.

Network service provides invaluable leadership experience, builds professional networks and raises the profile of the women and men who serve. These servant leaders build their careers and help their organizations as they shape the future of the Network.
Best of the Best region NEW Northern California The Network recognizes the collective achievements of one region each year with its “Best of the Best” region award. In 2011, NEW Northern California and its team of nearly 50 committee members were recognized for serving as a source of best practices shared throughout the Network. The group led the way in social media, piloted new succession planning tools and was the first group to mentor a start-up region — Pacific Northwest. The region was led by Co-Chairs Lori Proctor of Procter & Gamble and Erica Swanson of Slalom Consulting, Treasurer Audrey Goins Brichi of Chevron and Secretary Michelle Tonner of Daymon Worldwide.

Bobbie O’Hare Award Sue Klug Sue Klug, president of the Albertsons division of SUPERVALU and Co-Chair, Logistics for NEW Southern California, received the 2011 Bobbie O’Hare Award as the Network’s “volunteer of the year.” The award is named for former Regional Chair Bobbie O’Hare of JOH, who helped lead the development of NEW’s regional groups, and recognizes outstanding commitment and service. “We are mentored by just observing how she conducts herself, how she runs our team and how she handles challenging situations,” Klug’s fellow committee members wrote when nominating her. “She is a role model to all of us — and to virtually all who know her.”
