Model Plan View of the Pavilion

The design of Pavilion aims to create three apertures in the Christian Science Plaza for vistors to see world from an architectural perspective. At the same time, two famous sculptures are also needed to be placed in the designed pavilion. My design is placed over the water of the reflecting pool. Combining with the element of water, the design of creating a private space in the open air intends to create space for people to relax.

<--- model view of section 1 aperture: framing ---> Section 1 shows one aperture. Through framing the sky and three skycrapers, this aperture hides the lower parts of the three buildings and their surrounding environment. Therefore, this design creates a peaceful and private space for people to take a break and relax from the bustling urban environment.

This aperture focuses on the colonade of the building. The “gap creates an abstract and flattened view of the colonade.

This aperture focuses on the organic side of the plaza. By layering the trees, this apeture shows the contrast of the nature and the human made environment.

Carpenter Center Learning Space

Carpenter Center Learning Space Inspired by the grid structure of the Carpenter Center designed by Le Corbusier, my learning space is designed on a diamond shaped grid. This design aims to host large, medium, and small individual studying groups. All the available spaces together can host a large group. The three diamond-shaped space can host medium-sized groups. If an individul wants to sit anywhere in the learning space by him/ herself, that will be defined as a small group. The learning space design is simple and clean. There are spaces under the ground level in the earth, two benches on the ground level, and one ramp for vistors to walk.

Section 3 This project aims to design intentional staircases that lead guests to the two specific paintings in the museum. My museum has three floors and one open entrance. There are two sets of stairs that will lead guests to different places in the entrance hall. One is floating stairs that will lead guests to third floor and see the Virgin Mary painting. The other set of stairs will lead guests to see one of John Singer Sargent’s painting.
