PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL SPRING 2015 ALI SHERIF
The project comprises of the design of a city block in South Boston and a school that lies within it. In addition to the school, the block is to include a residential complex, offices, and retail and commercial spaces. The main design concept, that is carried throughout the project both at the site scale and at the building scale, is visual and physical connectivity. The residential and office buildings create a gateway to a public plaza which connects the busy corner of Washington St to the quieter, less busy park. The school’s outdoor theatre delineates the public plaza from the school courtyard, while maintaining a continuous flow. The school aims to continue that flow through an atrium space that connects different school sections visually, yet separates them physically. In addition, a common space conncects the more public performing arts center to the academic sector of the school with an uninterruped circulation path veining itself throughout to allow for easy and convenient access.
