The HarborWalk has a changing character as it winds through the city’s

Wormwood Park

waterfront neighborhoods and downtown district, stretching from Chelsea Creek to the Neponset River, through East Boston, Charlestown, North End, Downtown, South Boston and Dorchester. Part of the richness of the HarborWalk is its variety, reflecting the various activities and urban texture of adjacent land. The HarborWalk’s design guidelines allow for the expression of diversity and a variety of active and passive uses. The HarborWalk is designed to connect the public to a clean and restored Boston Harbor. The HarborWalk links the water’s edge to the city’s open space system.

Fort point Chanel Harborwalk

Along some areas of the waterfront, the HarborWalk extends into maritime industrial areas. In these areas the HarborWalk may be a series of observation points, rather than a linear path, where the public has the opportunity to view at close range the exciting operations of a working industrial port. At certain locations and times, there are limitations to public access in order to protect public safety and industry operations. The HarborWalk also connects to new and existing networks of inland trails, which will link the HarborWalk to established parkways and open space networks, including the Emerald Necklace system, the Charles River Esplanade, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway. In the future, the South Bay Harbor Trail will offer Boston residents a new and exciting way to access the Boston Harbor on foot or bicycle. The trail will extend from the Ruggles MBTA station and winds its way through Lower Roxbury, the South End, and Chinatown to reach the HarborWalk at the Fort Point Channel.

Thesis

!

Our design strategy is to respond to the thermo-dynamics of the site through the

buildings structure in order to enhance thermal comfort. We chose an in-situ concrete diagrid structure to free the plan and allow for maximum flexibility and adaptation. The manipulation of diagrid exo-skeleton structure will take on a passive role to provide complete shading in the summer months while allowing for full heat gain during winter months. Passive systems are also aided by hydronic cooling and heating pipes . Cross ventilation is also provided by the diagrid structure. As the enclosure is set back from the exo-skeleton, it allows for operable windows throughout the entire building, facilitating cross-ventilation.

!

The massing strategy with the structural system (concrete diagrid exo-skeleton)

allow for a flexible future use. Based on our scenarios we have identified hierarchies of program types and relationships. The massing strategically breaks up the outdoor space for diff erent uses (private/recreational/social/anchor points) while still connected at key points. Following our forecasted use of the building, we classified the program between soft (flexible/ easy to adapt), hard program (demanding/harder to adapt) and connectors, establishing patterns and relationships. Buildings systems have also been divided between hard and soft use. The building massing allows for maximum adaptability due to a variety of program relationships. The two buildings allow for some floors to be connected and some to be completely separated, maximizing future use aggregations. The concrete diagrid exo-skeleton allows for carving out double-height spaces, if the future program demands it or vice-versa. Flipping the enclosure with the structure allows for even more flexibility. The curtain wall placed inside the structure can provide a variety of different indoor-outdoor iterations on each floor.
