Modern buildings today have a highembodied energy. This is due to the conventional standards we resort to when it comes to materials. Steel and concrete have been the core structural material for constructing skyscrapers, however they are harmful to the environment. We need to begin to look towards other, more sustainable materials such as wood. Wood not only is a structurally robust material, but it is self-regenerating and actually sequesters carbon rather than emits it. 5

INTERIOR POTENTIAL The existing spaces that are created in office buildings today can be rather mundane and dark. They do not have an inviting feeling. Using steel and concrete, as the primary structural material also requires the beams and posts to be concealed. Now when wood is introduced as the primary structural material, it has the ability to be exposed, creating a warm and inviting environment to work in. The people who inhabit the space are now able to enact with the structure, creating a more dynamic and useable space.

With the implementation of wood as the primary structural material, one cannot simply mimic the conventional post and beam structure. A new composition of structural elements must be introduced in order to achieve the heights of a skyscraper with wood. Truss structural systems have stood the test of time as a viable model to reach new heights.

Utilizing the truss structure with wood, a cellular module is developed as the core building block of the skyscraper. This cell is comprised of 8 wodden trusses that span 5 storyes. With a circular stair connecting the individual floors within the cell a new model of leasing can be employed. These cells can be leased vertically as they are coupled together in a pair rather than the standard leasing of an entire floor. This allows for smaller companies to rent these spaces and creates a HIVE type of building with multiple companies.
