Quintessence of Dust A.I. Abilities Debt Removed - an effort to preserve higher ed. UBI is implemented. Government limits corporate powers. Technology moving at slower pace.

Society do not have time to pursue fulfillment. Citizenship is highly contested, widdening class gap. Liberal arts become almost exclusively for the rich. Economy based on export of everything. STEM Fields surge.

2020 - With tens of thousands jobs going away from automation and artificial intelligence, workers are being told the jobs they’ve held onto for so long will no longer matter tomorrow. Today these jobs are drivers, manufacturing, call-centers, even retail workers and photographers. Workers are being told to switch their industry to coding. Coding boot camps have popped up everywhere in the U.S. due to the demand of the industry migration. Tech giants have made it clear that they care not for the candidate’s education, disregarding degrees and prioritizing coding skills. There was once a world where any bachelor degree from a top university will provide you with security that is no longer the case. A.I. squeezing available jobs, pressure to go to college and crushing debt is a recipe of disaster. If left unchecked, this will surely lead an implosion of traditional higher education in liberal arts/humanities. To combat this we must look at several very important factors that are likely to occur but also what happens when they do not occur: Will student debts be removed? Will Universal Basic Income be implemented? Will tech giants grow unchecked? These three influences are then divided into two camps: a scenario where A.I. capabilities are boundless and expand exponentially and a scenario where A.I. capabilities actually turn out to be quite limited and grow slowly. Using these influences, a list of prediction can be made about its economic, political, and social patterns which will give us a better look into how liberal arts/humanities will be affected by the A.I. revolution. The timeline follows a 35 year model and an 85 year old model, in which the scenarios can lead into each other, recognizing that as much as we want to predict the future, it is always unexpected. Quantum computing can dramatically increase A.I. progress however, it is often compared to nuclear fusion, a technology of the future but never quite there or accepted. This suggests that all scenarios are equally likely.

Liberal Arts Education

Conservative Populism

A.I.EXANDRIA Human politics have, surprisingly, managed keep up with the technological pace. Instead of fear and following a populist desire to shelter in a conservative fantasy, we have embraced artificial intelligence. However this does not mean equal access for all countries. In a world where artificial intelligence can easily replace all cheap labor, singular access to this technology will render all other production economies obsolete, forcing them to become material export economies. In other words, the United States can operate on a mercantilist stance and control much of the world’s means of production as well as technology. With the implementation of UBI, citizenship becomes heavily contested, only those useful for protecting this technology (scientifically and militarily) and tech giants are granted the social luxuries afforded as dividend of this technology. Universities continue to thrive as the economy brings about boundless fruits, giving free time for citizens to achieve personal and educational fulfillment. In a world proliferated by technology, humanism trends again. There is a social desire to be well-read in the classics, the humanities, and the fine arts, a social desire to celebrate humans and to be more human. Education will practice Joseph Aoun’s idea of “humanics” a new academic discipline that combines the humanities and technology. Higher education must prepare facilities that can closely bring together these two fields of study.

Bezoymandias Greed is as old as time. The government is corrupt and weak. Corporations run amok. Amazon is all powerful. Extending the control of supply chain to both raw materials and products. We have not embraced artificial intelligence; we were, instead, braced. There is no universal basic income. The large chunk of the population that have taken out enormous loans for higher education in a non-STEM field are now just as angry and powerless as those who lost their jobs to A.I. in 2020. The GDP is higher than ever, so is the suicide rate. Some blame the tech giants, some blame the government, some blame their parent’s generation for placing them straight into college on their own debt. Most blame higher education’s commitment to creating administration jobs instead of adopting for student’s skills. Most independent liberal arts schools are shut down. Universities are losing students to coding camps, which in a sense have created a meritocracy, and increased economic mobility for those previously in the working class. Citizens are being retrained to work alongside A.I., with social programs paid for by tech giants to avoid major unrests. This social mobility is then limited to citizenship, deepening the gap between privileges. Universities are mistrusted; many university buildings intended for the humanities are now sold to corporations for more manufacturing. Sometimes these buildings are shared. As universities begin to find less and less liberal arts and humanities application, the manufacturing spaces begin expanding more and more.
