Mission, Vision, Values
The President’s Annual Report is prepared and published by the Neumann University Office of Institutional Advancement and University Relations in collaboration with other units of the University. The 2017 fiscal year began on July 1, 2016, and ended on June 30, 2017. Gifts received on or after July 1, 2017, will be acknowledged in next year’s annual report. While we work diligently to avoid errors and omissions, please inform the Office of Institutional Advancement and University Relations of any error by calling 610-558-5513. Thank you.
Forward in Faith & Gratitude I have been a member of the Neumann University community for only a few months, and I have already experienced the goodness and energy of our students as well as the commitment and passion of our faculty and staff. The optimism that I have for the future of our University is strengthened even more as I review the achievements that are outlined in this annual report. In the last year, our students and alumni exemplified the essence of Catholic Franciscan higher education through academic excellence, athletic accomplishment, and community service. The University itself continued to make significant progress in academics, facilities and philanthropy, adding several new programs of study and completing the planning for a new Health Sciences Center addition. This Center is the keystone of our Forward with Faith campaign, which also includes building the endowment for two pivotal University institutes: The Neumann Institute for Franciscan Studies and the Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development. You will see details of these initiatives in the pages of this report.
All of the accomplishments described in this publication occurred under the superb leadership of Dr. Rosalie Mirenda. I am truly grateful for her transformation of Neumann during a magnificent career and her willingness to provide additional counsel as President Emeritus. Together with the Neumann community, I am confident that we will continue to meet the unique opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Anchored by its Catholic Franciscan mission, Neumann University has a bright future. My wife Mary and I are looking forward to serving and participating fully in the life of our University for years to come. Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Everett Domes President
1
Since its founding in 1965, Neumann U niversity has always moved forward and has always based its progress and optimism on faith in the goodness of God. During the 2016-17 academic year, Neumann launched an initiative to ensure that the institution will thrive for decades to come.
Forward with Faith is a special campaign to honor the legacy
of Dr. Rosalie Mirenda, President Emeritus of Neumann University, and her husband, Tony, Neumann’s first ambassador, for their years of leadership, vision, and commitment to students and to the University’s Catholic Franciscan mission. The campaign has three components.
Health Sciences Center The Health Sciences Center will facilitate the education of nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and exercise and nutrition specialists. These professionals are needed to address market demands in health care, the career that brought Dr. Mirenda to Neumann University more than 40 years ago (1973). Neumann began construction of this Center in the fall of 2017. The new structure, an extension of the Rocco Abessinio Building, will add approximately 17,000 square feet of instruction and lab space to accommodate projected growth in the doctoral program in Physical Therapy as well as in undergraduate programs in Nursing and the Health Sciences. The construction schedule calls for the Center to be open in September 2018. Key components of the project are six physical therapy/athletic training labs, a state-of-the-art nursing instruction auditorium that can accommodate 316 students as well as a two-story atrium with green space and a reflection area.
2
“Neumann University has decided to undertake this project in anticipation of the growth that is predicted in the health care industry over the course of the next decade,” said Dr. Lawrence DiPaolo, vice president for academic affairs. “With one out of every four jobs that were created last year coming from the healthcare sector, Neumann University is positioning itself to be a center for healthcare careers at both the undergraduate and graduate level.” “Neumann has a stellar reputation in the health sciences,” said DiPaolo. Nearly 40 percent of Neumann’s first-year students in 2017 have enrolled in four majors: Nursing, Athletic Training, Biology, and Biology/Clinical Laboratory Science. In the last three years, the pass rate for Neumann nursing graduates on the NCLEX, the exam that determines licensure, has been 95.4 percent, 90.7 percent and 91.8 percent. These pass rates are higher than the national and Pennsylvania rates.
Endowment for Two Institutes Enhancement of the endowment for the Institute for Franciscan Studies, established in a gift from the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, will ensure Neumann University’s Catholic Franciscan character and identity through consistent, systematic education, formation, research and writing focused on the continual deepening of the integration of the Neumann mission into the University’s academic instruction. Sr. Patricia Hutchison, OSF ‘70, director of the Institute, works with faculty members in every discipline to ensure that the RISES values (Reverence, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship) are integrated into every course and that the core curriculum emphasizes Catholic Franciscan values. This Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development (ISSCD), founded in 1999, has already been established with multiple gifts from individual donors, and has been recognized nationally and internationally. Enhancing this endowment will ensure this unique and distinctive ministry -- dedicated to the practical application of the role of sport in the spiritual, faith, character and leadership development of student-athletes and coaches -continues to transform perspectives, inspire behavior, and deepen awareness of self, others and God in a manner reflective of Neumann’s Catholic Franciscan identity. Lee Mirenda DelleMonache ‘05, director of the ISSCD, works with her staff to provide student-athletes and coaches with experiences and resources to assist them in discovering the best version of themselves and the optimal chance for success in all aspects of their lives. Through team chaplains, leadership workshops and reflections, young people are awakened to the presence of God in their lives.
3
The life of any college campus is rooted in its students, who define its character and culture, and in its alumni, who exemplify the impact of its instruction and values. In 2016-17, Neumann University’s students and alumni illustrated the essence of Catholic Franciscan higher education: academic excellence, athletic achievement and community service. No accomplishments were more impressive than those of Haley Broomell ’17, who set a new standard for the term “student-athlete” at Neumann. A Biology/Clinical Laboratory Science major, Haley won the University’s John A. Phillips Scholar-Athlete Award and the Valedictory medal at the April 21 academic awards convocation. In addition to these two awards, she won the Sister Margaret Lewis, OSF Award for Excellence in Clinical Laboratory Science, the David Barton Sumner Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, and a certificate for completing the University Honors Program. Haley has already landed a job at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and has been accepted into the master’s degree program in Occupational Therapy at Temple University. DeShawn Lowman ‘16, another senior who graduated in May, was named the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for Division III. He helped lead Neumann to the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season and tournament titles, as well as a No. 11 national ranking.
4
The leading scorer in the history of men’s basketball at Neumann, DeShawn also earned first team All-CSAC honors in his first three seasons and was the 2014 CSAC Rookie of the Year. Katrina Terry ’17, who helped identify new bacteriophages as part of the SEA-PHAGE project when she was a rising sophomore, has been accepted to Drexel University’s PhD program in Biology. “I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without the faculty at Neumann,” she wrote to Dr. Rosalie Mirenda. “I have had excellent mentors in biology, math, and especially in leadership during my time here. I feel the people at Neumann have helped shape me into a confident young woman.” Helen Cooney, an English and Secondary Education major, and Dr. Ryan Savitz, professor of Mathematics, presented their research, supported by funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, at Mathfest (the annual meeting of the Mathematics Association of America). The title of their paper is “The History of the Definite Integral.”
Alejandra Fernandez, a Political Science major, was accepted into Temple University’s Capital Semester program for the fall of 2017. She is the third student over the past three semesters to be accepted and enroll. Patrick McCann ‘17, and Brittany Naimoli ‘17 are the others. Three recent graduates -- Matthew Sheneman ’15, Jonathan Low ’16, and Clarissa Hayes ’15 – have all begun their studies at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed their “white coat” ceremony. Patrick Graham ’17, an English major, will attend the Rutgers University School of Law. Other English majors who are pursuing advanced degrees are Keith Fallows ’17, who is enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program at Rosemont College; Laura Todd ’17, in the West Chester University MA in English program; and Megan Yates ’17, pursuing a double degree at Rosemont College: the MA in Publishing and MFA in Creative Writing. Lisa Jean Riley, a 2014 graduate who majored in Psychology, has been awarded a full-tuition scholarship to attend Villanova University Law School. After graduating from Neumann in three years, Lisa worked for a boutique law firm in Center City Philadelphia and then moved to the legal affairs department of Allstate Insurance Company, where she was promoted to a paralegal position last year. Chanel Robinson-Hill, a Biology major and W. W. Smith Charitable Trust Scholarship recipient, was selected to complete a summer internship in the Temple Material Institute (TMI). Students engaged in community service, including week-long service immersion trips to Louisiana and South Carolina (Habitat for Humanity), Bolivia (Unidad Academia Campesina Carmen Pampa), St. Lucia (Cardinal Kevin Felix Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre), and Wyoming (St. Joseph Church).
In athletics, 63 students were recognized as members of All-Conference teams and 164 made All-Academic teams. 5
In a year of presidential transition, the University continued its progressive approach in the areas of academics, student life, facilities, and fundraising. In the academic arena, new majors and pre-professional programs were added to the curriculum, including Health Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematics Secondary Education, Pre-Engineering, and Pre-Physical Therapy. In addition, the University joined the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), allowing nationwide markets for current, fully online programs (MS in Education and BS in Public Safety Administration) and signed its first Early Admittance Program with Drexel University. The Academic Affairs unit also initiated the first “Wintermester” and hosted the largest Career Fair on campus since 2007. Student Affairs launched a new student engagement application through OOHLALA, a mobile platform that provides a dedicated destination for students to engage with Neumann and each other. The app is a comprehensive communication center which reduces the complexity of campus life to a coherent user experience.
6
Through faculty sponsorships, students heard from two expert speakers on newsworthy topics: addiction and immigration. Dr. Bruce Alexander lectured about his research, “The View from Rat Park,” in which he argues that stressful social pressures contribute mightily to addiction. Dan-el Padilla Peralta spoke about his book, Undocumented, which explains his experience growing up as an undocumented immigrant in America. Under the aegis of the Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development (ISSCD), student-athletes also heard remarks by Ron Meyer, the honoree at the sixth annual ISSCD award. On the facilities front, the University took a giant step toward enhancing its enrollment and academic reputation by completing plans for the Health Sciences Center (details on page 2), to be completed by September 2018.
The Thomas A. Bruder, Jr. Life Center was made even more studentfriendly through the creation of photographic art installed on two walls of the Student Multipurpose Hall. The photos reflect campus life and emphasize the University’s RISES values. Fundraising for Neumann received a major boost through a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help fund the new Health Sciences Center. The University hosted several successful events: the 18th Annual Scholarship Gala, Evening in New York City, the inaugural lecture for the Rocco A. ‘79 and Mary F. Abessinio Division of Business Endowed Chair in Management and Entrepreneurship, and the University Brendan P. Kelly ‘87 Celebrity Golf Classic. A student philanthropy group launched the I HEART NU campaign, resulting in the largest class gift ever presented to the University.

Scholarships
Newly Endowed Scholarships
This year, Neumann established three very special endowed scholarships thanks to the generosity of the benefactors and friends. These scholarships benefit full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate a commitment to the Catholic Franciscan Mission and the values of Neumann University.
Sister Eleanor Augustine Beckman, OSF Scholarship
Founding chair and professor of chemistry (1965-1993) in the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics of Our Lady of Angels College, Sister Eleanor Augustine Beckman, OSF, was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 66 years. As a science teacher Sister Eleanor was noted for her enthusiasm, excellence in teaching and ability to motivate and challenge students to achieve their potential as a foundation for their life goals. Funded by an insurance policy in Sister Eleanor’s name, this scholarship benefits a student majoring in any of the fields designated under STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) at Neumann University.
Sister Margaret M. Lewis, OSF Scholarship
Founding director and professor of Clinical Laboratory Science (1971-1984), Sister Margaret Lewis, OSF, is a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Prior to her service at Neumann, Sister Margaret coordinated the medical technology program for St. Francis Hospital in Trenton, New Jersey. She earned a doctoral degree in Medical Technology from Catholic University of America and was the first individual in the country to receive such a degree. Among her publications is a textbook and manual for medical technology students. In 1997, Sister Margaret returned to Neumann as a member of the Board of Trustees (1997-2010) and of the Board’s Finance Committee (1997-present). Her years of experience in hospital administration continue to provide a valuable background for her contributions. In 1995, the Sister M. Margaret Lewis, OSF Award for Excellence in Clinical Laboratory Science was initiated in her honor and is annually given to a graduating senior. This endowed scholarship benefits a student majoring in clinical laboratory science or biology at Neumann University.
Edward Q. Lewis Scholarship
This scholarship was named in memory of Eddie Lewis, a foster child in Philadelphia who was adopted by a loving family. Today, he is the founding member of the Support Center for Child Advocates Client Advisory Group and is the namesake of a new venture project called Eddie’s House. Mr. Lewis and his peers were instrumental in getting the project off the ground and in creating awareness among social workers and child advocates about the atrocities endured by many in Philadelphia County’s foster care system. Eddie’s House is a 24-month program composed of education, work readiness, life-skills training, mentoring and counseling. This scholarship benefits a student that has been in foster care with financial need at Neumann University.

Make History... Endow a Scholarship
Endowing a scholarship at Neumann University is the best way to help academically qualified students, who would otherwise not be able to afford a private education, attain a Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition. Neumann University remains committed to help students achieve their educational dreams by raising money for endowed scholarship funds. While a several scholarships are provided through the generous support of foundations, many of the University’s endowed scholarships (minimum contribution of $25,000), have been established by individuals who wish to perpetuate the legacy of a loved one with private funds. For more information on how to establish an endowed or restricted scholarship, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement and University Relations at 610-558-5513.
