2 Corinthians 8:7
But as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness and in the love from us that is in you – make sure that you excel in this act of kindness too.
We, at Neumann University, have been entrusted with an extraordinary responsibility – to provide knowledge, professional preparation, and specialized expertise for our diverse community of learners. Taking that one step farther, we desire that every classroom experience enables our students to lead fulfilling lives by reinforcing the moral compass established by so many that have led the way for us, most especially St. John Neumann, Mother Bachmann, the Sisters of St. Francis, our alumni and countless friends. So, it was fitting that our theme and the emphasis for 2012-13 was “Excellence” because a commitment to excellence is required if we are to achieve our Mission. The following pages are filled with inspirational examples of excellence realized through scholarly and academic pursuits achieved in both a formal classroom setting and in the informal classroom of life experience. As you read about Dr. Ramona Palmerio-Roberts’ Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Chris Herren’s powerful guest lecture on drug addiction, the renovation of our Bruder Athletic Fields, the transformation of Sacred Heart Chapel, the extraordinary success of our Clinical Laboratory Science majors, our second consecutive appearance on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, and All-American ice hockey player,
Scott Farrell, keep in mind that these are examples that illuminate publicly our mission and commitment to be the best we can be. Not to be overshadowed, however, are the quiet, unpublicized expressions of excellence that occur on our campus every day: faculty members who spend hours preparing for each class, the student who researches independently to master a concept, coaches and athletes who put aside personal agendas in favor of cooperation and teamwork, campus safety officers who take extra precautions to ensure the safety of everyone, staff members who offer warm smiles of greeting and assistance, and administrators who make our students their priority. Because of these capable and committed people who embrace and embody our Mission and its Core Values, we can all be confident that Neumann University strives to attain excellence – every year, every day, every moment. A
new idea can hit you like that first breath of frigid air when you walk outside on a February morning...
It can be startling and exhilarating, demanding your immediate attention. A new idea can capture your imagination, pique your curiosity, and drive you to prove its authenticity. In a college setting, new ideas are the expected result of a confluence of concepts, an intellectually stimulating environment that stretches perspectives and makes higher education worthwhile.
The fertile ground for intellectual growth at Neumann University is the faculty, who ask the questions that urge students to think every day. Faculty awards presented in 2012-13 went to Louis DeAngelo, Ed.D., lecturer in Education (Part-Time Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching); Eileen Flanagan, Ph.D., professor of Pastoral Studies (Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching); Ramona PalmerioRoberts, Psy.D., assistant professor of Psychology (Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching); Theresa Pietsch, Ph.D., assistant professor of Nursing (Faculty Award for Growth in Scholarship); and Marisa Rauscher, Ph.D., assistant professor of Education (the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching). Outside speakers also provide opportunities for students to hear and discuss experiences with which they may not be familiar. Three such guests made powerful, sportsrelated presentations in 2012-13.
2
Former college basketball and NBA player Chris Herren mesmerized hundreds of students with heartbreaking stories of his 18-year battle with drug addiction. John Nickolas, vice president and CFO of the Philadelphia Phillies, addressed Business and Information Management majors at the 20th Annual Business Exchange. Finally, Phil Martelli, Fran Dunphy, and Jay Wright – head men’s basketball coaches at St. Joseph’s University, Temple University, and Villanova University – accepted the Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development Award on behalf of Coaches vs. Cancer of Philadelphia. In addition, Father Anthony Ciorra, Ph.D., delivered the Dorothy A.P. Leunissen Presidential Lecture and marked the 50th anniversary of Vatican II with his address on “St. Francis of Assisi and the Second Vatican Council” at Charter/Sponsorship Day. J. Mark Baiada, founder of BAYADA Home Health Care, was the keynote speaker at the Academic Awards Convocation, urging students to connect the dots that can lead to a fulfilling life. Finally, Dr.
Dan Gottlieb, host of “Voices in the Family,” a mental-health radio show on WHYY, was the featured speaker at “The Autism Puzzle: Fitting the Pieces Together,” a conference hosted by the Division of Education and Human Services. Other academic successes during 2012-13 included launching a new core curriculum, a multi-year project that was spearheaded by Sr. Patricia Hutchison, OSF ’70, director of the Neumann Institute for Franciscan Studies. In addition, Neumann developed new articulation and dual enrollment agreements with Atlantic Cape Community College, Salem County College and Gloucester County College, and updated an already existing agreement with New York Chiropractic College. Academic progress continued into the summer months with the advent of the Summer Academic Momentum Program, which allowed 31 rising sophomores to move closer to on-time graduation by taking discounted summer classes.

Highlights
College students have a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity
They can stretch their intellectual, social and spiritual wings and rise on the winds to take them where they want to go. They can change majors and career plans, develop their talents, discover true friends, and forge the principles by which they will live their lives. This growth can occur in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the chapel, or in a soup kitchen.
In May 2013, more than 700 students graduated from Neumann University. While statistics have not yet been compiled about the success of the class in finding careers related to their field of study, the achievements of Biology majors in the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) track is clear. Seven CLS majors graduated from Neumann University in May, and every one of them had a job offer before walking across the stage to receive a college degree. Dr. Sandra Weiss, director of the CLS program, believes that starting salaries in the Philadelphia area are at, or above, the $40,000 level. The graduates landed jobs at a variety of facilities, including A.I. DuPont Hospital, Einstein Medical Center, Crozer Keystone Medical Center, and Philadelphia VA Medical Center.
4
In the current undergraduate population, Biology and Psychology majors saw the most rapid growth in 2012-13 and now boast 169 and 209 majors respectively. In the area of service, coordinated by Campus Ministry, students excelled. For the second consecutive year, Neumann University was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its work in four urban areas: Philadelphia and Chester, PA; Wilmington, DE; and Camden, NJ. This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. Neumann students volunteered their time at places such as House of Joseph in Wilmington; Heart of Camden; Drexel Neumann Academy and Anna’s Place in Chester; St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia; and the Assisi House in Aston.
More than 70% of Neumann’s student population engaged in some form of community service representing more than 130,000 service hours. Neumann athletics continued its track record of accomplishment. Sixteen of 21 NCAA teams advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs with three teams earning conference championships (volleyball, men’s ice hockey, and softball) and six teams earning post-season berths. Scott Farrell ’13 of the ice hockey team earned recognition as an All-American while volleyball’s Natalie George was named CSAC Player of the Year. Two Neumann coaches (Deana Jespersen, volleyball and Bill Saar, softball) took home Coach of the Year honors. Of the 332 student-athletes, 126 were named to conference all-academic teams.

The
responsibility
is challenging, even daunting, for those who hold the reins at institutions of higher education.
Thousands of families entrust you with their daughters and sons, hoping for nothing less than personal growth, academic rigor, and career preparation for their young women and men. You constantly gauge the right balance of theory and practice, enjoyment and scholarship, social skills and individual responsibility.
In 2012-13, Neumann University took steps to strengthen the intellectual, spiritual, athletic, and leadership opportunities available to its students. The third floor of the library was completely renovated, adding more smart classrooms, modern technology, and small-group study spaces. The renovation is part of a two-year project, which will transform the entire library into a student-friendly information center by the fall of 2014. Spiritual life is always at the forefront at Neumann, and the renovation of Sacred Heart Chapel in Bachmann Main Building made the space even more inspirational and uplifting than it had been. New lighting, expanded and comfortable seating, and a visually riveting ceiling make the Chapel a truly sacred space, located in the heart of campus.
6
The Bruder Athletic Fields underwent a makeover, the likes of which Neumann had never seen. The baseball and softball fields were completely redesigned and reseeded. New dugouts, fences, and stands were added,
as were public address systems. Both fields were blessed and opened during a Homecoming Weekend ribbon-cutting ceremony in October. To cultivate student leadership, Sr. Peggy Egan, OSF ’70, dean of students, collaborated with the Neumann Institute for Franciscan Studies to create the Institute for Student Leadership Formation. The Institute organized and hosted an August conference on principles of student leadership and a January conference on ethical leadership. For the first conference, Neumann won the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Maurice Clay Leadership Development Award. ODK is the National Leadership Honor Society. To ensure that future students will be able to experience the Catholic Franciscan commitment to educate the whole person, Neumann University raised record amounts of funds for scholarships and other initiatives. The Fourteenth Annual Scholarship Gala netted more than $165,000 for student scholarships. With leadership from Dr. Mary Powell, associate professor of Nursing, Neumann also procured a $960,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services to help support the education of underrepresented groups in undergraduate nursing programs. The University also obtained a federal $1.1 million grant for student support services and a $1 million grant from Pennsylvania to assist the library renovation project. Always mindful of giving back, the University also continued the Center for Community Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship. The purpose of the program is to develop community leaders who are better prepared for their offices, better educated to avoid pitfalls and mistakes, and, more importantly, have the wherewithal to make positive, value-driven decisions. Neumann also expanded the successful Career Management Series, a group of workshops which are open to students, alumni and community members free of charge. Topics included resume writing, interview strategies, dining etiquette, networking skills, and more.

A gift to The Neumann Fund can do so much. As the cornerstone of all funds, the Neumann Fund unites the contributions through Neumann’s three main funds—Annual, Scholarship and Athletic.
The Annual Fund
is the traditional favorite for our donors. These gifts provide the flexibility to support the University’s greatest need from updating ever-changing technology and campus improvements to providing student experiences that build community and strengthen values.

Excellence begins with you
Gifts to The Scholarship Fund provide funds for academically qualified students to attend and pursue their academic goals and fulfill their dream of a college education. Providing these young men and women with a Neumann education is a tradition we are proud to advance and uphold.
The Athletic Fund supports the twenty-one Division III varsity teams. Gifts buy new equipment and uniforms, help cover the costs of travel, and maintain the fields and courts. Gifts allow Neumann to create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and concern for others and help communicate the values of community and family through teamwork and sportsmanship for all of our student athletes.
• Thank you for supporting The Neumann Fund
The Guardian Angel Society was established to recognize the University’s friends and benefactors who have made commitments to its future through bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, and other planned giving vehicles. They are helping provide vital resources to meet the educational goals of future generations. A Guardian Angel Society certificate is presented to any individual who makes a planned gift to the University. Donors whose gifts are irrevocable are listed on the University Guardian Angel Society Plaque. Donna Chamberlain Applegate ’73 Sr. Mary St. Richard Atkinson, OSF Sr. Eleanor A. Newly Established Scholarships
Establishing a scholarship at Neumann University is the best way to academically qualified students...
help
Establishing a scholarship at Neumann University is the best way to help academically qualified students, who would otherwise not be able to afford a private education, and experience Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition. Neumann remains committed to helping students achieve their educational goals by securing money for endowed and restricted scholarship funds. While a number of scholarships are provided through the generous support of foundations, many of the University’s endowed scholarships (minimum contribution of $25,000) have been created by individuals who wish to perpetuate the legacy of a loved one with private funds.
This year, two new scholarships were established by the generosity of the Maguire Foundation and the family and friends of Matthew R. Hallinan ’08. Sustaining a vibrant learning community takes creative programs that link philanthropic partners together. These scholarships provide financial assistance to students who have a record of academic achievement and the desire to learn, but lack the financial resources to pursue a college education. Neumann University’s Maguire Scholars Program began with the freshman Class of 2017. Established as a registered non-profit organization with the Pennsylvania Department of State by Mr. and Mrs. James J. Maguire, the Maguire Foundation began in October 2000 as a philanthropic enterprise that primarily focuses its resources on education. The founders’ vision remains firm to commit time, talent and treasure with an investor’s approach to supporting education and art appreciation. The Foundation’s mission is grounded in the belief (as taught by St. Ignatius Loyola), that we are men and women for others. The focus is to assist children and young adults with an opportunity to benefit from a quality education by partnering with institutions and families in need. Maguire Scholars receive $5,000 annually as last-dollar scholarships to help retire their loan debt. The Maguire Scholars Program will be available to five Neumann students for the next four years. In addition, five new students will be added to Neumann’s Maguire Scholars Program in each of the next three years.
Matthew R. Hallinan ’08 Memorial Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established in May of 2013 in loving memory of Matthew R. Hallinan ’08 by his family and friends. Loved and known by everyone as Neumann’s #1 basketball fan, Matt was a diligent student who took his academic course work very seriously. Impeccably punctual, he arrived to class one hour early to make sure he had the best seat in the room. Matt overcame great obstacles to achieve his dream of completing a college education. His love of learning lives on in perpetuity and through the recipients of this scholarship.
