In another leadership gift to the In Giving We Receive campaign, Rocco and Mary Abessinio established the Rocco A. ’79 and Mary F. Abessinio Division of Business Endowed Chair in Management and Entrepreneurship. This gift will enhance the experience and knowledge of our students in business while establishing an annual lecture in the discipline. Mr. Abessinio, himself, presented the inaugural lecture on October 4, 2016, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
The First Step toward
Only a year ago, I was writing to you about the extraordinary celebration of Neumann University’s 50th year, which we had just completed. I’m pleased to share that we were able to achieve several significant steps since then to maintain Neumann’s vibrancy for the next 50 years through the extraordinary generosity of Rocco ’79 and Mary Abessinio, Mark and Ann Baiada, John and Joan Mullen, and our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. It has taken a full year to make the addition to the Thomas A. Bruder Jr. Life Center a reality, but it was worth the wait. Students are in awe as they discover the new space, now officially known as the John J. Mullen Communication Center. In this Center there are two television studios and a radio station with three studios to replace the one small space they had. These studios were built to do for our Communications and Digital Media (CDM) majors exactly what we try to do for all our students – provide a blend of theory and practice that will prepare them for a successful career after graduation. The addition will also enhance campus life by attracting other majors to become involved in Neumann Media. Students create their own shows for WNUW 98.5, broadcast games on Neumann Sports Network, produce videos for NeuTube, and/or write for The Joust.
Mark and Ann Baiada, co-chairs of In Giving We Receive, presented the University with a leadership gift to establish the J. Mark and Ann Claffey Baiada Professorship in Nursing/Home Health Endowed Fund. The gift will support an annual scholarship for an upper division undergraduate or graduate nursing student who has exemplified excellence in home health care. It will also assist in hosting an annual forum led by a recognized professional with expertise in home health care. We are blessed to have friends like these, who believe deeply in Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition. With their love and leadership, and your continued support, Neumann is well on its way to its centennial in 2065. Pace e bene,
Rosalie M. Mirenda, Ph.D. President

In Giving,We Received In terms of philanthropy, Neumann University’s 50th year was among the best in its history. Friends and alumni led the way in providing support during 2015-2016, the University’s hallmark celebration of its first half-century. The centerpiece of the festivities was In Giving We Receive, the 50th Anniversary Campaign, an ambitious, multi-year, $10 million comprehensive effort that included endowment, restricted and unrestricted funds, and capital projects to advance Neumann’s mission and help its students succeed. Thanks to the generosity of those who are committed to the concept of Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition, Neumann received more than $5 million in 2015-16. A significant portion of this support focused on tuition assistance for students. Without endowment support, which now includes more than 100 named scholarships, a Neumann education is out of reach for many young people. More than 85 percent of undergraduate students enrolled at the University have financial need as identified by federal guidelines. Nearly half of the student body consists of first-generation college students. Also providing essential assistance is The Neumann Fund, a key source of operating support that impacts virtually everything on campus. It includes the Annual Fund, Scholarship Fund, and Athletic Fund. The John. J. Mullen Communication Center will certainly energize the new Communications and Digital Media major (CDM), a modernized version
of the Communications and Media Artsprogram. In media production, hands-on learning is essential, and the new studios will help prepare students for careers in the industry. CDM offers students the option to select one of six tracks or areas of emphasis: Production and Digital Broadcasting, Journalism, Strategic Communication, Graphic Design/Visual Communication, New and Social Media, or Sports Communication. Even before the construction of the new studios and the curriculum upgrade, graduates had launched careers with ABC7 New York, CBS Radio, Comcast Spectacor, Greater Media Philadelphia, iHeart Media, the Philadelphia Union, the Rachel Ray Show, and Saatchi & Saatchi. The Mullen Communication Center only enhances the potential for professional success. Students who are not CDM majors but join Neumann Media just for fun will also reap the benefits of the Center. Whether they want to work
on camera as part of Neumann Sports Network or behind the scenes on WNUW 98.5, the new technology will make their experience more enjoyable. This $5 million expansion project was funded, in part, by the generous donation of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Mullen, and by a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, awarded through the Delaware County Redevelopment Authority.

The John J. Mullen Communication Center, a 10,000-square-foot expansion of the Life Center, stretches from the McNichol Room toward Morgan Circle and wraps around the building, extending across the entire length of the Life Center behind Meagher Theatre. It includes:
• Two
TV studios with brand new cameras,
teleprompters, lights, intercom, and news desks. An IP-based workflow allows for communication between two studio control rooms and the one in the Mirenda Center for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development, enabling students to produce three independent, live shows that can interact with each other. Classes such as audio, advanced TV, and documentary production will be held here.
John J. Mullen
Communication Center The highlight of philanthropy in 2015-16 was one capital project that transformed the Thomas A. Bruder, Jr. Life Center.
• A
meeting room for students. This space is available for a class to plan a project or for Neumann Media students to prepare a Neumann Sports Network show or WNUW program.
• A green room for radio, TV or theater guests. This small area offers university guests a private area with rest room facilities to prepare for an interview or performance with easy transportation access to Morgan Circle.

“We are blessed to have friends like these”
In Giving, We Received Three significant leadership gifts, and the ongoing support of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelpha, propelled the campaign toward its goal.
Mark & Ann Baiada Mark and Ann Baiada, co-chairs of the In Giving We Receive campaign, presented the University with a leadership gift to establish the J. Mark and Ann Claffey Baiada Professorship in Nursing/Home Health Endowed Fund. The gift will fund an annual scholarship for an upper division undergraduate or graduate nursing student who has exemplified excellence in home health care. It will also assist in hosting an annual forum led by a recognized professional with expertise in home health care. J. Mark Baiada founded BAYADA Home Health Care in 1975 with the mission to help people have a safe home life with comfort, independence, and dignity. More than three decades later, BAYADA has grown from its humble beginnings to become a national leader in home health care serving clients in 25 states from more than 250 offices. Mr. Baiada sponsors the BAYADA Regatta—a competitive rowing event for athletes with disabilities. In addition, he sponsored various relief efforts that helped people injured in the Kosovo War, Hurricane Katrina, and the tsunami disaster of 2004, and is currently sponsoring nurses to help rebuild Haiti. Many organizations have honored him for his humanitarian work. Ann Baiada, RN, CRRN, is a director of BAYADA Home Health Care and has long been a champion of the nursing profession. Her unwavering commitment
to clinical excellence motivated her to create two training and mentoring programs at BAYADA and to found the company’s rehabilitation nursing program in 1998. Her passion for nursing and her ability to empower and inspire led to the establishment of an award in her honor, the Ann Baiada Award for Excellence in Clinical Leadership, in 2006, and the development of the Ann Baiada Center for Clinical Excellence in 2010. Of all their successes, the Baiadas consider their five children and ten grandchildren to be their greatest achievement.

John & Joan Mullen As part of the In Giving We Receive campaign, Rocco and Mary Abessinio established the Rocco A. ’79 and Mary F. Abessinio Division of Business Endowed Chair in Management and Entrepreneurship. Mr. Abessinio presented the inaugural lecture on October 4, 2016. John and Joan Mullen provided a generous gift to support the construction of the John J. Mullen Communication Center, an addition to the Thomas A. Bruder, Jr. Life Center. John J. Mullen, COO of Distribution for the Apple Liesure Group, founded the company under another name in 1969 with just three employees. In the 1970s, the new venture offered charter flights and later expanded into cruises from Philadelphia and Baltimore, breaking the monopoly held by the port of New York. In 2001, Apple Vacations established a hotel division, AMResorts, marketing it in several brand categories. Today, AMResorts provides sales, marketing and brand management services for over 23 properties with more than 8,000 total rooms in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. From 1971 through 1987, Mrs. Mullen worked in the business with her husband, first out of their home, handling all the accounts receivable, payable, and payroll. In September of 1989, she entered Villanova University and earned a degree in English with a minor in Irish Studies. Following graduation, she taught eighth grade Language Arts for four years at St. Mary Magdalen School. Mrs. Mullen has been chairperson for the annual Fete for St. Gabriel’s Home for Boys in Audubon, PA, and for six years, chaired the Blue Ribbon Gala for West Catholic High School where she is a member of the Board of Trustees. She was instrumental in the establishment of The Father Bill Atkinson Scholarship Foundation, and has worked on many functions for St. Mary Magdalen and St. Dorothy, and as a volunteer at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
Mr. Abessinio started Cross Country Bank (now Applied Bank) in 1996. Applied Bank, with its sister company, Applied Card Systems, grew to over five million accounts and was ranked tenth among the national credit card issuing banks. Today, Applied Bank is rated among the top banks in the country focusing primarily on commercial banking, providing loans to businesses throughout the Northeast. Mr. Abessino currently serves as chairman and CEO of Applied Bank and Roch Capital, Inc. After raising four children, Mrs. Abessinio joined Applied Card Systems where she held the title of Corporate Secretary and used her writing skills to perfect marketing and training materials. Mrs. Abessinio was regarded as the face of the company as it began its growth in the credit card industry. In 1997, she retired to pursue her interests in charitable works and to spend more time with her outside interests. At present, she is the CEO of the Abessinio Family Foundation, while also doing volunteer work. Mr. Abessino holds a bachelor of science degree from Neumann University. Mrs. Abessino is a graduate of Goldey Beacom Business School. Both received an honorary doctorate from Neumann University. They have been married 47 years, and have four grown children and ten grandchildren.
Married for 53 years, the Mullens have four children and 15 grandchildren.

Student Achievement
The 2015-16 academic year was stellar in terms of student achievement in and out of the classroom. Because Neumann University’s signature programs are in nursing and health sciences, it’s not surprising that many of the honors recognized students for achievement in these areas.
Here are some of the
Highlights
from the year.
Nikolria Grant, Nikolria Grant
a junior biology major, was selected to pursue undergraduate research as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine’s summer 2016 Short-Term Educational Experiences for Research (STEER) Program. “I was amazed that I was selected,” confessed Nikolria. “There are only six people in the program this year.” The West Philadelphia native is interested in research regarding the effect of the environment on children with developmental disorders and wants to become a developmental pediatrician and pursue a master’s degree in public health.
Alexandria Martinez
and Solomon Kokolie received Materials Science and Engineering Summer Research Fellowships from Temple University. Both Alexandria, a resident of Reading, and Solomon, who lives in Upper Darby, are biology majors. According to the Temple website, the fellowship “will engage students in research projects spanning materials chemistry, physics, and engineering in a nine-week residential experience” from mid-May through mid-August 2016.

Amelia Altoe, an English and secondary education major, presented a paper entitled “Parallels between Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Hawthorn’s The Scarlet Letter” at the 10th Undergraduate Conference in Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The gathering is one of the largest undergraduate conferences in the humanities held in the United States. More than 200 participants from 37 colleges and universities attended the event in December 2015.
The American Society for Microbiology has published a paper that was co-authored by Katrina Terry, a junior biology major. The article provides notice to the scientific community that the mycobacteriophage genome called Cabrinians has been sequenced. It discusses the methods and protocols used to assemble the sequence, as well as initial findings about the functions of its genes. Mycobacteriophages are viruses that can infect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB).
Reggie Coleman, Ryan Stokeling, and Rafiq Williams won Katrina Terry
the Student EMMY for Best On-Air Talent at the September 19 awards ceremony of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The sold-out event, attended by television personalities and executives from four states, was held at the Philadelphia Hilton. The talented trio host the pregame show on Showtime Sports, the Neumann Media program that is produced in conjunction with Neumann athletics. The students report news about the University’s athletic teams, discuss game strategy, and analyze the competition in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Matt Janicki,
an Education major, is one of 11 students in the country to receive the Delta Epsilon Sigma scholarship for 2016-17. Delta Epsilon Sigma is the National Catholic Honor Society.
All three of Neumann’s applicants were selected for the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis: Kelly Fox and Julia Fair of the women’s ice hockey team and Matt O’Keefe of men’s basketball. The annual event brings together 200 selected student-athletes to learn and explore potential careers in sports, with the primary focus on intercollegiate athletics.

All three are students in the master’s degree program in Pastoral Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
of 2013, was accepted into the environmental law program at Vermont Law School. According to the school’s website, “Over the past 24 years, Vermont Law has earned 17 top rankings [from U.S. News & World Report] and never ranked lower than No. 2. Vermont Law has been the top-ranked law school for environmental law for an unprecedented six consecutive years, including 2014-2015.” Just two months after graduation in May 2015,
Krista McAndress was hired as a medical technologist by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). In August 2016, she was promoted at CHOP from working in their chemistry lab to working in their metabolic lab. She is now doing mostly mass spectrometry work for metabolism disorders.
The competition involved submitting an essay in response to a mock ethical scenario presented by the ACA Ethics Committee. Submissions were judged by several criteria, including clearly identifying the ethical dilemma, proposing and justifying action, writing clearly and concisely, and citing appropriate scholarly literature.
G. Stephen Williams and Terrance Clark have been named to the annual 40 under 40 list in Delaware. A business administration major who graduated in 2009, Williams now serves as a vice president and business development officer for Wells Fargo Bank. Clark, a member of the class of 2014, is the founder and CEO of Limitless La Vie, a non-profit fashion company that uses proceeds to improve quality of life in communities throughout the state.

Scholarships

Establishing a scholarship at Neumann University is the best way to help academically qualified students who would otherwise not be able to afford a private education and experience Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition. Neumann remains committed to helping students achieve their educational goals by securing support for endowed and restricted scholarship funds. While a number of scholarships are provided through the generous support of foundations, many of the University’s endowed scholarships (minimum contributions of $25,000) have been created by individuals who wish to perpetuate the legacy of a loved one with private funds.
The following is a listing of Endowed and Restricted Scholarships.
