DESIGN BRIEF

HOPE - A PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR ORPHANS

Located in a beautiful region of Kathmandu valley, ‘HOPE’ is a primary school and home for orphans and children from marginalized communities. Home is a learning environment focusing on cognitive development of a child.

Idea: What is learning and what is the duty of architecture to enhance learning? Trying to solve this question, development of built form that could benefit, become an important center and enhance the quality of learning. This proposal works with the theory of Form, Function and Feeling. FORM to EXPLORE, FUNCTION to EMPOWER and FEELING to EXPERIENCE.

Creating a safe place for the students within a vibrant environment, educating them, letting them explore and learn new ideas. The project proposes an outdoor space that welcomes the visitors, a small square open to them and the library which is carefully located to be a knowledge platform on any days. The spaces are also designed to conform the perimeter of the plot, giving an image of unity and defining clear boundaries easy to control. The architecture itself works as protective fencing to the education sanctuary, trying everything into one experience. The functional courts between the classroom blocks and the central courtyard act as a nucleus, encouraging the students to come together, share their experiences and work as a team. Every classroom and program faces the courtyard except the services to function the architecture and activities smoothly. Classrooms are arranged such that students can communicate with the whole architecture. The dramatic stairway at north helps students to explore nature and life.

Hope is not just a school for students, it is a home that provides the opportunity throughout , to bring in the values learned within the protective sanctuary, to share and recreate experiences

DESIGN BRIEF

LIVING WOODSIDE A SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE

Located in the Kathmandu valley, LIVING WOODSIDE focuses on creating a comfortable living environment between the woods largely surrounded by norths community forest. The project succeeds adapting the building in the environment, use of natural materials, exploitation of the views and protection from weather conditions.

The architecture is a study in strong simple linear compositions and highly refined materiality with an emphasis on natural wood. The massing defines solid and void, captures natural light and connects the indoor with the landscape, seeking to ‘experience the outdoor from within’. In order to optimise the distinctive character of the natural contour condition and also combine it with the need of the clients, the dwelling is split into two separate space: residence and workspace by a small rill flowing through the site. Inspired by natural contour condition, the main residence space sits on high ground (+3000) where main entrance is situated maintaining privacy.

The strong linear volumes defining horizontality runs towards east and west from north forming a L-shape cantilevered on both edge where common spaces are allocated. The lower service level support the cantilever dimensions at west where upper floor provide private spaces. The overall O-layout combining residence and workspace, LIVING WOODSIDE features an internal open air courtyard.

The interior has a simple design with the linear space layout focused on changing scenery when ones walk from one dimension to other. A double ceiling space at entrance where a big tree and water features are dotted to ensure the peaceful built space with great interior views. The relation between spaces ensures the connection of family members yet protecting their privacy.
