A STEP BACK INTO THE OLD WEST.

From Death Valley to Rhyolite Ghost Town, and from the Amargosa Big Dunes to Bailey’s Hot Springs...Beatty is in the center of it all. We’re your gateway to adventure!

GHOST TOWNS & GUNFIGHTERS

[BEATTY /RHYOLITE ] From old west shootouts along the streets of

Beatty to the desolate silence of Rhyolite Ghost Town, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, to the days when outlaws like Billy the Kid ran a muck. The gunslingers that walk these streets today are just having fun, and while reenactments of old west shootouts are a daily occurence, you’ll find nothing but friendly folks and plenty of adventure to be had.

AN ADVENTURE

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

If you want a complete change of scene, head over to your neighbor Boulder City. We keep things pretty wholesome around here. You can ride on steam trains, shop for antiques, go fishing on Lake Mead, learn

about Hoover Dam, sit down for breakfast or lunch at our family-owned restaurants, or find a quiet park for a nice picnic. Don’t be a stranger. Just swing by when you want a quick break. VisitBoulderCity.com M AY / J U N E 2 014

Pyramid Lake, near the town of Fernley, covers 125,000 acres, making it one of the largest natural lakes in the state of Nevada. It’s also home to the famous Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that grow to world-record sizes.

Dayton

Fort Churchill State Historic Park, near Dayton, was built in 1861 to provide protection for early settlers. Visitors can enjoy historic and environmental education, hiking, camping, picnicking, and photography.

Fallon

Surrounded by the Lahontan Valley Wetlands, one of the most significant wetland systems in the American West that includes the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge, Fallon is a birdwatcher’s paradise in the spring and a mecca for waterfowl hunters in the fall.

Austin

Stokes Castle near Austin is an exact replica of a tower outside of Rome, Italy, and was built out of hand-hewn native granite. The castle was built in 1897 for Anson Phelps Stokes, an eastern financier who had mining interests in the Austin area.

Eureka

Built in 1880, the Eureka Opera House was a movie theater in the 1940s, then stood idle until Eureka County purchased and restored it in 1993. The Eureka Opera House now serves as a full service convention center and cultural arts center.

Ely

In Ely, the Nevada Northern Railway harkens back to a time when the iron horse ruled the rails! Today, this National Historic Landmark offers extraordinary train rides, tours, an overnight in a caboose and the opportunity to BE the Engineer and operate a steam locomotive.

Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is home to Wheeler Peak, the highest mountain located entirely in Nevada. Also featured within the park is Lehman Caves, a beautiful marble cave system ornately decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, flowstone, popcorn, and shield formations.

FLOUR & BARLEY

BRICK OVEN PIZZERIA HEATS UP THE LINQ. Block 16 Hospitality—the innovative team behind a long and growing list of Las Vegas’ hottest restaurants—has announced the opening of Flour & Barley Brick Oven Pizza in The LINQ, the city’s newest shopping, dining, and entertainment district. Flour & Barley Brick Oven Pizza offers guests a unique spin on a pizzeria eatery, with a creative menu that includes individual brick oven-style pizzas, Italian-inspired appetizers, pasta dishes, Panini’s, and salads. The pizzeria also features handcrafted cocktails as well as an extensive beer selection with seasonal beers and wines on draft. “We created Flour & Barley to be the perfect complement to the electric atmosphere of The LINQ,” sys Billy Richardson, founding partner of Block 16 Hospitality. “Flour & Barley is a destination spot for anyone in search of delicious wood-fired pizzas, creative menu items, a fantastic beer and wine selection, and a place to soak up the excitement of The LINQ.” Renown chef and Block 16 Director of Culinary Operations Anthony Meidenbauer, developed Flour & Barley’s inventive menu that goes beyond standard pizza offerings. The menu spotlights high-quality ingredients including pizzas made with All Trumps flour, San Marzano tomatoes, whole milk mozzarella, and house-made and unique toppings including fennel sausage, Calabrian chili, roasted cauliflower, prosciutto cotto, and more. Designed as a rustic sports bar, the 3,800-square-foot pizzeria is adorned with a natural wood and brick interior, a marble bar top, and marble tabletops, complemented by vintage posters and classic black-and-white sports photography. The restaurant also features a 1,200-square-foot patio opening to The LINQ’s central plaza, and a to-go window serving fresh-made slices, making it well situated to serve guests of The LINQ’s various venues and the High Roller observation wheel.

LANDSAILING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 14TH ANNUAL COMPETITION PICKS UP SPEED NEAR AUSTIN. On July 12-19, NALSA (North American Landsailing Association) is hosting the FISLYNALSA 14th Landsailing World Championship 2014 at Smith Creek Playa, located in a beautiful valley in the high desert near the town of Austin. The event features skilled sailors in high-tech machines that reach speeds of up to 100 mph racing for titles in several different categories. Participants are active, thrill-seeking individuals and innovators who enjoy the sport in coastal, urban, and desert dry lake settings. Smith Creek Playa racecourse is very wide compared to the typical beach racecourse, offering unique opportunities. The race committee can optimize the length and depth of the “starting box,” in which the mini yachts circulate during the timed countdown to the start. “We believe Smith Creek’s size offers us the opportunity to have the best big-fleet starts ever held for the 5.6 Mini Class,” says Dennis Bassano, president of NALSA. NALSA previously hosted the 2002 World Championships in southern Nevada. Like the 2002 event, the 2014 World Championship is expected to draw competitors from France, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and more. Participants compete in six or more classes of vehicles, ranging from simple tube-frame landsailers to exotic streamlined carbon fiber machines, some with wing sails like the current America’s Cup catamarans. As one of the event’s most exciting classes, the international 5.6 Mini land yacht class is relatively new and has deceptively simple design rules that allow a lot of innovation. Interestingly, the rules do not specify how the Mini races will start. The vehicles are small and maneuverable enough, however, that most Mini regattas now feature rolling starts, which is very unusual in land yachting. Moreover, the class is growing rapidly worldwide, resulting in large fleets. These big-fleet rolling starts will be featured during the first three days of the FISLY-NALSA 14th Landsailing World Championship. 24

BBQ, BREWS, AND BLUES 19TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE ELDORADO.

Fire up the grills, tap the kegs, and crank up the tunes for Reno’s best summer kickoff party. The Great Eldorado BBQ, Brews, and Blues Festival is equal parts barbeque block party, micro-brew tasting event and music festival with two stages featuring non-stop rock and blues. Past headliners include Coco Montoya, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, Blood Sweat & Tears, Greg Kihn Band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Canned Heat, and Tommy Castro and The Painkillers. Attendees can wash down the hot rock and blues with some cool brews. A selection of the Eldorado’s own Brew Brothers’ custom microbrews are on tap along with choices from more than 40 microbreweries from around the world. The $30 daily or $50 weekend tasting package includes an eight ounce souvenir cup and unlimited tastings during the festival. Nothing says summer like barbecue, and the Eldorado has the perfect complement to the festival’s variety of microbrews: grilled chicken, ribs, sausage and more, fresh from the outdoor grill. Food booths will line Virginia Street serving a variety of tasty options for purchase. There’s no better way to celebrate summer than with the 19th Annual Great Eldorado BBQ, Brews, and Blues Festival, set for Friday, June 20 from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 21 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Consolidated Virginia Mine in Virginia City, site of the Big Bonanza of the 1870s.

In 1867, the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company began operations in Virginia City, but did not immediately achieve success. In 1871, James Flood—in partnership with John Mackay, James Fair, and William O’Brien—bought stock in Consolidated Virginia, forming the Bonanza Firm. Eventually, the men bought the land owned by Consolidated Virginia. They hit the “Big Bonanza” in 1873, extracting more than $100 million in silver ore over the next nine years. 10
