All the Things He Was Michael Jackson ONE celebrates the life & music of MJ

C

irque du Soleil shows are in virtually every major casino in Las Vegas and most tourists have seen at least one in their visit to our fair city. The newest spectacle to make its debut is the highly anticipated Michael Jackson ONE. Yes, Michael Jackson was a controversial celebrity, but there is no denying that he had a magical quality that shone onstage. Cirque brings his magic back to life. The premise of the show is a journey of the four misfits Clumsy, Shy, Smarty Pants, and Sneaky who are thrown into a vortex after sneaking into the show. The first song to start off their journey is crowd favorite “Beat It.” Interwoven in their journey are all of Michael’s iconic items which are used in different numbers, including his trademark glove, shoes, hat, and glasses. Our four heroes must also battle to be free from the evil grip of Mephisto, which is a malevolent machine made up of radio, microphones, and other electrical equipment. As they continue their journey, each of Michael’s songs are represented with the energy that Cirque acrobats bring. They walk vertically on the walls of the stage, fly through the air over the audience, and Mother Moon, an ethereal beautiful glittering creature flies over the stage and sings a haunting duet of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” with the character Star. Michael’s career spanned over 45 years, and Cirque includes songs like “Dirty Diana” in which Mephisto’s siren and The Muse

16

(a conduit for Michael’s music) go head to head in a spectacular one-of-a-kind pole-dancing act. For the song “They Don’t Care About Us”, the choreography conveys Michael’s fight to get his message out—that when we are faced with war, poverty, strife—we must never stop hoping and dreaming of a better world and how we can help. As controversial as it is to resurrect legendary artists onstage where holograms are used, Michael Jackson ONE uses the technology with great care and feeling as Michael is projected on stage singing “Man In The Mirror.” The show runs 90 minutes and is a visual feast of imagery, costumes, and out-of-this-world dance moves. It’s a must see show with a total of over 30 of Michael’s songs. You will leave the show with Michael’s songs in your heart and his final message, “We’re putting love back in the world. To remind the world that love is important. To love each other. We are one.” Ticket prices are $69, $99, $130, $140, $155, plus LIMITED Gold Circle Seating. Prices do not include LET, tax or fees. Star Views: Las Vegas

By Carole McCabe Joy

Top Chef Curtis Stone wowed diners with his delicious fivecourse menu for The Venetian/Palazzo’s Carnevale. After each course was served, Curtis came out from the kitchen and answered questions and described each dish. What was served? Delicacies such as fried zucchini stuffed with Taleggio.

As the long hot days turn into cool nights, Las Vegas still continues to be one of the greatest celebrity meccas in the world! At any time, we have actors, reality stars, and top chefs drop by and party in Vegas! Funnyman David Spade is a frequent visitor to Las Vegas. Not only has he been in hit movies, he was one of the funniest characters on the long-running sitcom Rules Of Engagement. He achieved another iconic success with his comedy act celebrating 100 shows at The Sands Showroom!

Brenton Ho

Former 90210’s Ian Ziering just finished up a guest star appearance with world-famous hunks The Chippendales. Coming off the wildly successful “Sharknado,” Ian thrilled audiences in Vegas with his chiseled body and boyish charm.

Las Vegas’ former mayor Oscar Goodman was the latest target of a celebrity roast. Several notable and popular local comedians had the stage for six minutes to get their jabs in the mayor and their fellow roasters! However, Mayor Goodman asked, “I’m just wondering when this roast is supposed to start?”

18

Those lovely ladies sure know how to party Vegas style! Former Girl Next Door, Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett, and Real Housewife of The OC, Gretchen Rossi, hosted two days of fun at TAO and TAO Nightclub. Gretchen, looking gorgeous in a hot pink bikini, had a blast with the TAO Dayclub’s cryo gun. Kendra was a co-host and posed and signed autographs for every fan! Looking fit and fabulous she rocked a hot bikini also. Her words of advice to the bachelorettes: “Satisfy your man!” Keeping busy now that Jersey Shore is off the air, reality star/DJ Pauly D visited a local Wal-Mart store to introduce the throngs of fans waiting for a pic or autograph to his newest venture, REMIX Cocktails. He was also presented with a birthday cake, since he turned 33 on the same day! *** What stars will shimmer in the desert next? Check back next issue!

FANTASY’s New Headliner Jamie Sizzles Onstage at the Luxor has titillated and teased audiences FANTASY for over 13 years now on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

Beautiful women perform sexy playful dances, ranging from a private peek into sophisticated stunner Tracey’s boudoir as she undresses for bed, to red-headed temptress Sonja as she performs dazzling feats with aerial ribbons. However, it is the newest addition to the FANTASY line-up that has the town buzzing. A certain honey-blonde bombshell named Jamie Lynch is the new headliner. Jamie brings her amazing vocal range to the stage along with a playful sassy manner. When she performs songs such as “It’s a Man’s World” dressed in a tight black suit with a diamond -banded fedora, it is easy to see why she was chosen to headline. Another number that had the crowd spell bound was the FANTASY rendition of “Roxanne.” Wearing a black-and-red corset with red hearts and a silk top hat, Jamie glittered on the stage. The FANTASY dancers for this number wear different variations of costumes such as corsets, short skirts, and tight shorts. Oh and did I mention that FANTASY is a topless show? At one time or another all the dancers appear topless onstage with the exception of Jamie and comedian Sean E. Cooper. With the grace and beauty that these ladies possess, at no time does the show ever feel contrived or indelicate. Cooper provides a ton of laughs as he impersonates Michael Jackson and proceeds to choose one lucky lady in the audience to have a “Magic Mike” moment with him. This time it was Candice and her boyfriend Rob who were singled out by Jamie for some ribald fun on stage. The running joke of the night was Rob and Candice, so if you are ready for some onstage fun, sit in the front row! With the new headliner comes new numbers! Wearing a black, sexy, skin-tight dress with bondage straps in the back, Jamie sings the number “Black Velvet.” As she sings, two FANTASY dancers weave a black ribbon around all three of them. It’s a sexy number that had the two guys sitting next to me breathless! FANTASY is a show that brings fantasies to the stage along with statuesque beauties. A total of 15 numbers are showcased, and FANTASY is great for singles and couples alike. FANTASY performs nightly at 10:30 p.m. in the Atrium Showroom at Luxor. Tickets start at $39, plus taxes and handling fees. Guests must be 18 years of age or older. Tickets can be purchased at the Luxor box office, online at luxor.com, or by calling 800.557.7428 or 702.262.4400. By Carole McCabe Joy

Cantina Laredo Raises the Bar with its Delightful Offerings M

exican food can be just like every day fare or it can be new and exciting! When you visit Cantina Loredo at Tivoli Village, expect modern Mexican cuisine with a twist. When you walk into this airy, open restaurant and are greeted by a genuinely friendly hostess, it’s a good start. For seating, you can either choose one of the spacious booths or a four-top table. Now that the weather is cooling down in Vegas, two spacious patios are available for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Now onto the food! We started off our meal with the guacamole. The cart rolls up to your table, and you can choose your own ingredients such as fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and either chopped or grilled jalapenos. If you are daring, try the grilled jalapenos; they add a nice kick! This Top Shelf Guacamole will feed up to four and is priced right at $8.99. Next was an incomparable dish of Ahi Tuna Tacos, filled with the freshest, firmest Ahi tuna I have tasted in a while. Firm large chunks are encased in mini taco shells and topped with chipotle aioli. Jicama slaw, and a side of guacamole is placed beside each taco, a bargain at $8.99 for four. Heaven! Ceviche is served many ways and Cantina Laredo does it best. Once again, large chunks of fresh shrimp, scallops that have been marinated lightly in pineapple juice and then mixed with lime juice, tomatoes, and onions are served with crisp chips. This appetizer delivers a burst of freshness and flavor that tastes like freshly caught seafood. Once again at a great price for this delicacy $8.99.

26

The main courses are varied and have favorites such as fajitas, carnitas, and enchiladas. However, what tantalized my taste buds was the Chile Relleno and the Camaron Poblamo Asada. A Chile Relleno is a delicate dish, and too many times I have tasted those that have been overwhelmed with the thickness of the batter surrounding it. A light batter and a mixture of picalillo filling with ground beef, almonds and raisins with Oaxaca cheese covered with spicy ranchero sauce was a delightful surprise on this dish and is priced at $13.99 and with cheese only $12.99. Our server Ramon mentioned that this is the traditional way it is served in Mexico. n e va d a M A G A Z I N E . C O M

|

The Camaron Pablamo Asada dish consists of grilled steak around a poblano pepper with shrimp, mushrooms, onions, and monterey jack cheese covered with chimichurri sauce. This was another wonderful dish that captures the essence of traditional Mexican cooking with a twist and is $20.99. The drink menu is varied and the house specialty is the Casa Rita, which is a robust true Margarita bursting with the flavor of Giro Silver Tequila, orange liqueur and fresh squeezed lemon juice and is $8 or for Happy Hour in the bar area it is $4. Sangria has always been a favorite drink of mine and the sangria here is truly exceptional. It is made with Blood Orange Liqueur, burgundy, orange juice, and ginger beer for $7.50. Dessert was spectacular. Warm freshly baked apple pie surrounded with butter, brandy, and crème sauce topped with cinnamon ice cream is deliciously decadent and worth not counting calories for! Lunch and dinner hours and all the Happy Hour Specials can be found online at cantinalaredo.com/location/las-vegas/. Truly a remarkable restaurant with wonderful food and friendly service!

LAS VEGAS, 2013 – With dogs and puppies of all ages, sizes and breeds including more mixed breeds than most municipal shelters, Adopt A Rescue Pet “ARP”, since it’s non-profit charitable approval in 2001 has placed over 12,000 homeless animals into loving homes, via it’s weekly adoption events. So far this year the organization has provided a safe haven to more than 1,200 homeless dogs; adopting more than 900 of it’s animals into wonderful loving homes. * ARP currently cares for more than 300 dogs on a daily basis, housing some in temporary structures on the existing sanctuary land, others in foster homes, but a large majority at a local kennel. This campaign is to build permanent structures allowing the sanctuary to be open to the public for adopting, volunteering, and decreasing the euthanasia numbers of adoptable pets in area shelters.

Common Sense Will Keep You Alive Flash floods in Clark County are the result of high intensity, short duration thunderstorms, typically occurring in the summer months. The months of July through September are considered flash flood season throughout Southern Nevada. The Las Vegas Valley’s average annual rainfall is approximately 4 inches. Even a small storm with little precipitation can produce dangerous flooding when the rain falls on the hard Las Vegas desert soil. Roadway low points can quickly fill with floodwaters, trapping unsuspecting motorists. Dips, bridges and low areas are particularly prone to flooding and are not always visible at night. Avoid areas that are already flooded and high velocity flow areas. Do not attempt to cross flowing washes. Be aware that the roadbed may not be intact under floodwaters. Turn around and go another way. NEVER drive through flooded roadways. Children, in particular, need to be warned about the dangers of floodwaters and dry washes.
