NIAAA to Host Twitter Chat on Holiday Drinking The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) will be hosting a Twitter Chat, “Alcohol & the Holidays: What You Need to Know.” The chat will cover tips for celebrating the season safely if you choose to drink, vital stats about drunk driving, and evidence-based advice for those thinking about reducing their drinking in the New Year. The chat will also explore the after-effects of a night of overconsumption (apart from those professionally damaging dance

moves at the office holiday party), as well as the intriguing “holiday heart” phenomenon. Co-host: The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) will join as the official co-host of this chat. Scientific Expert: Dr. Aaron White, Ph.D., whose research expertise includes alcohol-related black-outs, binge drinking, and underage drinking prevention.

Combining Alcohol and Energy Drinks a Dangerous Combination CADCA and its member coalitions have long been concerned about the dangerous effects of combining energy drinks with alcohol, and now new research confirms just how dangerous this practice can be. The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that young

people who combine alcohol with caffeine-laden energy drinks can end up drinking more than they intended to. The study, which was reported by Health Behavior News Service, part of the Center for Advancing Health, found that this is a popular practice on college campuses, which has led to heavier alcohol use and more serious alcohol-re-

lated problems compared to drinking alcohol without energy drinks. “What studies like this can help with is getting conversations started,” said Schneider. “Doctors should ask young people if they do this, and then ask if they know the dangers. Often teens don’t understand the risks of combining energy drinks with alcohol and that’s scary.”
