Proposed Act Two building – subject to revision
Act Two – Fine Arts Building
The University of Nevada, Reno believes that the arts reflect cultural values and impart skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and observation that can be applied to every facet of a university education. In addition to arts majors, the University of Nevada, Reno’s School of the Arts welcomes roughly 4,000 students, from almost all disciplines across campus, who take arts courses each year. Much like other buildings that have recently been added, or are in the process of being added, to the campus, Act Two – Fine Arts Building will serve as a recruitment tool, while also providing opportunities to engage, and therefore to retain, students at our U.S. News & World Report national Tier 1 university. The successful completion of Act One has moved the School of the Arts improvement and expansion efforts into Act Two, the construction of a new fine arts building that will connect to Church Fine Arts through a sky-walk. The approximately 41,000 square-foot building will greatly enhance the quality of the University’s music and art programs by creating a new 287-seat recital hall; art museum; digital media spaces including a fabrication lab; an instrumental rehearsal room and storage area; a choral and opera rehearsal room; a recording studio; and multiple new music practice and rehearsal rooms. The new Fine Arts building will elevate the arts to a new level of prominence at the University of Nevada, Reno and enrich the arts in not only student life across campus but the community as a whole.
North Entry – subject to revision
Project Details Act Two – the Fine Arts building will be constructed east of the Church Fine Arts Building and north of the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center. This beautiful and central area will provide a peaceful setting for a venue filled with art and music. Joining the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center, the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, the E. L. Wiegand Fitness Center and the Joe Crowley Student Union, the Fine Arts Building will be yet another jewel in the student-centered mid-campus district. The new facility will feature approximately 41,000 square feet of inspirational venues including: • Recital Hall • Art Museum • Instrumental Rehearsal Room • Choral/Opera Rehearsal Room • Recording Studio • Fabrication Lab • Practice Rooms • Teaching Studios Act Two is built around a multi-level lobby that connects the plaza level, the street level, and bridge level into a hub of activity and display. The bridge level will feature the upper gallery as well as gallery storage and preparation. This level will look down on the other floors below. The street level will be the showcase of the building with the 287-seat recital hall as well as the main gallery. Teaching studios, the green room and the gallery office will also be housed on this level. The plaza level will feature the instrumental rehearsal room, the choral/opera rehearsal room, the fabrication lab, the recording studio, teaching studios and practice rooms.
Area Highlights
Recital Hall – subject to revision
Recital Hall One of the most significant spaces in the new building is the 287-seat recital hall. This intimate and acoustically superb performance, practice, and education space will feature a state-of-the-art sound system with recording capabilities. Designed for the acoustical needs of chamber and solo music concerts, the recital hall will serve performances by professional visiting musicians and recitals by University of Nevada, Reno students and faculty members. This more intimate recital hall will not only allow for an increase in the number of quality musical performances on campus, but will free up the now overbooked Nightingale Concert Hall schedule so that it is more readily available for performances requiring larger capacity.
Art Museum Serving as the flagship art exhibition spaces for the University, the museum will include not only exhibition space but also cutting-edge, open storage for the art department’s significant permanent art collection and growing library of rare monographs and catalogues. Essential improvements, recommended to us in a recent facilities and program assessment by the federally-funded National Institute for Conservation, will be incorporated into the new facility.
Inspirational venues such as this affect students, performers, and audiences in positive and powerful ways. The new hall’s world-class acoustics will provide an unparalleled performing and listening experience for musicians and music lovers in northern Nevada.
This addition will provide enough space to rotate exhibitions more frequently, respond to audience needs and be a venue where individuals learn from original research while connecting the visual arts to their lives.

Instrumental Rehearsal Room This new space will allow for growth of the marching band, wind ensemble, concert band, and symphony orchestra. It will include a large instrument storage room, improved acoustics, and acoustical separation from surrounding areas. Choral/Opera Rehearsal Room Currently conducted in classrooms, this important addition will provide the more than 200 students who perform in four choral/opera ensembles the ability to rehearse in a space that has excellent acoustics and versatile seating to allow for practice on either tiered or flat flooring.
In addition to arts majors, the School of the Arts welcomes roughly 4,000 students, from almost all disciplines across campus, who take arts and music courses each year. Many of those students perform in the instrumental and choral ensembles.

Together, these two important projects will enhance the University’s ability to attract talented students and faculty, providing support for them to create their best work.
