Product Reference Guide Verefina creates pure and natural personal care products that are free of harmful parabens, petrochemicals (mineral oil), and artificial colors and fragrances. We believe it isn’t good enough to simply avoid harmful ingredients – our quest is to search out and formulate with the purest wholesome and nourishing ingredients available. After all, much of what goes on your skin ends up in your body, making it just as important to nourish the outside as it is the inside. Part One of this product guide gives information on some of the most prevalent toxins found in many personal care products. Part Two provides information on each of the carefullyselected ingredients we use to make Verefina’s nourishing products. Part Three lists each Verefina product and provides additional information about each product’s benefits.

Part One: Toxic Ingredients You Will NOT Find in Verefina™ Products At Verefina™, we recognize the value of a TRULY safe and natural alternative to the sea of toxic commercial products available. We believe personal care products should be made from the very best of nature and without toxic ingredients. Verefina makes it easy to limit your exposure to these chemicals, and by doing so helps to prevent disease and adverse health consequences. Verefina products are free of parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates, artificial colors, and artificial fragrances. While this is by no means an exhaustive list of the over 2000 damaging chemicals prevalent in the health and beauty industry that we DO NOT formulate with, we hope this will give you a brief education on some of the most prevalent toxins.

What Are Some of Common Toxins?

Parabens

A paraben is a type of preservative that has been linked to breast cancer, hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and infertility. Parabens may be listed as: butylparaben, parabens, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, sodium methylparaben, sodium propylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, or benzylparaben.

Petrochemicals

Petrochemicals are produced as a by-product of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil and are toxic to the nervous system. Petrochemicals can suffocate and age the skin and disrupt the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Petrochemicalas may also be listed as: mineral oil,

deobase, liquid paraffin, liquid petrolatum, paraffin oil, paraffinum liquidum, paraffin wax, prolatum oil, petroleum, mineral spirits, petroleum spirits, or Uvasol.

Artificial/Synthetic Colors

Artificial (synthetic) colors are believed to be cancer-causing agents. They are labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6.

Artificial/Synthetic Fragrances

Artificial (synthetic) fragrances are considered to be among the top five known allergens and are suspected to both cause and trigger asthma attacks. They have also been linked to immune system damage, sensitization, brain damage, hormone disruption, and cancer.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are types of detergents and surfactants that pose health threats. Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and 90 percent of personal-care products that foam. These may damage skin’s immune system by causing layers to separate, inflame and age. They are thought to contribute to yeast infections and may also cause hair thinning. It is believed that they build up in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain and also contribute to cataracts and improper eye development in children under 6. These substances are thought to allow 40% MORE toxins to enter the body through the skin.

Triclosan

Triclosan is a synthetic “antibacterial” ingredient registered by the EPA as a pesticide, posing risks to human health and environment. It is suspected of causing cancer in humans and Verefina Product Guide 6

capable of forcing emergence of “super bugs” it cannot kill. Triclosan is found in antibacterial soaps and some toothpastes.

Phthalates

Phthalates are a group of industrial chemicals used in many personal care products that contain synthetic fragrance. These products include deodorant, perfumes, colognes, body sprays, hand lotion, insect repellent, shampoo, soaps, detergents, nail polish, hair spray, and shampoo. Phthalates are known as “endocrine disruptors” because they mimic the body’s hormones and have been shown to cause reproductive and neurological damage. Label readers will rarely find the word “phthalates” on a label (except for the occasional “phthalate-free”), but be wary of the term “fragrance,” which is used to denote a combination of compounds which may include phthalates.

What are Essential Oils?

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are derived from different parts of the plant including the seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots flowers, and fruit. Essential oils carry a distinctive scent or essence of the plant from which they are derived and have been used for centuries for their powerful ability to help us achieve personal wellness. Each different oil is known for its therapeutic properties and most oils can enhance many areas of wellness.

Benefits and Properties of Verefina Essential Oils The skin absorbs about 60% of what we apply to it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; right into the bloodstream. With essential oils, this percentage is even greater. The molecules of essential oils are so tiny that they Verefina Product Guide 8

absorb more rapidly than substances with a larger molecular size. When applied to the body by massaging into the soles of the feet, essential oils travel through the body and affect every cell within just 20 minutes. Essential oils have the ability to penetrate the cell wall and transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell. This increases the amount of oxygen within the cell, which in turn gives more support to the immune system and other important systems of the body. Essential oils are antioxidants and as such, provide a powerful defense against free radicals. Essential oils can be delivered topically, aromatically, and internally. (See each essential oil for specific directions.) Below is a description of each essential oil we sell either singly or as an ingredient in one of our skin care and wellness formulations.

Benzoin Essential Oil (Styrax benzoin)

Benzoin is reputed to have antiseptic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, deodorant, and diuretic properties. Benzoin is thought to be helpful with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It improves skinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elasticity, helps cracked skin, while aiding the healing of sores and wounds and at the same time reduces redness, irritation and itching. Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil (Cinnamomun cassia blume)

The cinnamon tree is an evergreen native to China and Vietnam that has since been cultivated in many other regions. It has small, white flowers, oval shaped purple berries, and shiny, leathery green leaves. Cinnamon bark essential oil is highly respected for its antiseptic properties and pleasant scent. It is steam distilled from the cinnamon bark. This oil may be helpful for colds, flu, coughs, infections, and exhaustion. Clove Bud Essential Oil (Syzygium aromaticum)

Cloves and nutmeg were among the most precious of items of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Clove bud essential oil is yellow in color with a sweet-spice fragrance. It has historically been used for digestive problems, exhaustion, infection, burns and cuts, arthritis, asthma, colds, coughs, and sore throats. It is also used as an insect repellant, especially for mosquitoes. Clove bud essential oil is found in the following Verefina products: Clove Bud Essential Oil Single, Immunity Essential Oil Blend.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus essential oil is used on skin ailments such as blisters, burns, wounds, insect bites, lice, and skin infections. It is also used topically to combat the effects of colds and the flu. Historical records indicate that this essential oil was also used to treat sore muscles and joints. In addition to skin ailments, eucalyptus has been used to improve acne, hay fever, inflammation in nasal passages, asthma, migraines, respiration, diabetes, allergies, bronchitis, flu, rheumatism, and vaginitis. Eucalyptus essential oil is found in the following Verefina products: Eucalyptus Essential Oil Single, Immunity Essential Oil Blend.

Grapefruit (Pink) Essential Oil (Citrus racemosa)

Grapefruit essential oil is believed to be a spiritual uplifter and reputed to ease nervous exhaustion. It is known to ease muscle fatigue and stiffness. As a purifier of congested, oily and acne prone skin, we use it as a natural toner in some of our lotions. Grapefruit is also used to help with depression, headaches, stress, and nervous exhaustion. Known as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;happyâ&#x20AC;? oil, it is said to improve concentration and self-confidence. Grapefruit oil is one of the most popular citrus oils and is used extensively in the best spas in the world for cellulite treatments. When used in many types of massage and other modalities, grapefruit oil helps to break down excess cellulite and its diuretic properties help to flush the Verefina Product Guide 11

kidneys and cleanse the blood. Grapefruit Pink Essential Oil is one of the most popular oils to diffuse into the air for both therapeutic and aromatic reasons. Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula dentate)

For centuries, English farmers would place lavender flowers in their hats to prevent headache and sunstroke. The essential oils extracted from lavender flowers contain more than 150 compounds. Lavender essential oil is easily and quickly absorbed into the skin. It is known for its calming, soothing effects. It can also increase the effectiveness of other relaxants and help promote restful sleep.

Herbalists regard lavender as the most useful and versatile essential oil for therapeutic purposes. Lavender essential oil has very potent antiseptic properties and when massaged into skin, it can help treat a number of skin problems such burns, dry skin, eczema and itchy skin. It is most commonly associated with burns and healing of the skin.

Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus limonum)

Lemon essential oil is obtained by the cold expression of the outer part of the fresh lemon peel. It can take up to 3,000 lemons to produce 35 ounces of lemon essential oil. Historically, lemon essential oil has been recognized as a cleanser for skin and hair. It is known as a purifier that kick-starts the exfoliation process. Lemon essential oil has both antioxidant properties and refreshing and cooling properties. Research has also shown lemon essential oil to dispel mental fatigue and enhance the ability to concentrate. Lemon has been used in the treatment of colds and flu as well as used to improve hypertension, varicose veins, warts, circulation difficulties, and digestive problems. Lemongrass Essential Oil (Cymbopogon flexuosus)

Lemongrass is a fast growing, tall aromatic perennial grass. It is native to Asia but is now cultivated in the West Indies, Africa, and Tropical Asia. Lemongrass is known for its invigorating and antiseptic properties. Lemongrass essential oil is reputed to be an antidepressant and to help fortify the nervous system. It can be used for soothing muscular nerves and pain. It also has a reputation for keeping insects away. Lemongrass Essential Oil is found in the following Verefina products: Lemon Coconut Creamy Facial Cleanser and Citrus Burst Moisturizing Deodorant Cream.

Lime Essential Oil (Citrus aurantifolia)

Lime essential oil shares many of the same properties as lemon essential oil. It is used to improve acne, anemia, arthritis, asthma, brittle nails, bronchitis, colds, fever, flu, infection, insect bites, mouth ulcers, oily skin, poor circulation, rheumatism, stomach cramps, varicose veins, and warts. Limeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aroma is more tart than lemon but very refreshing. Lime Essential Oil is found in the following Verefina products: Lime Essential Oil Single.

Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis)

Orange Sweet essential oil is obtained from the peel of the orange fruit. It is used to enhance disposition and to boost immunity. Orange Sweet has been used to help with asthma, cholesterol, colds, cough, depression, hypertension, indigestion, infections, insomnia, menopause, muscle aches and pains, slow circulation, stress, wounds and wrinkles. To use Sweet Orange for its uplifting properties, add to a hand or foot bath or diffuse into the air, Orange Sweet essential oil is found in the following Verefina products: Orange Sweet Essential Oil Single, Citrus Burst Moisturizing Deodorant Cream.

Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint essential oil has a fresh, minty aroma and is obtained from the steam distillation of the fresh flowering herb. It is a versatile oil used to combat stomach ailments, migraine headaches, bronchitis, sinusitis, halitosis, hot flashes, indigestion, nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, irregular periods, nervous conditions, colds and flu. Peppermint has also been used to treat dermatitis, acne, muscle pain, motion sickness, depression, to improve concentration and memory.

When used in skin care products, peppermint essential oil has a cooling effect by constricting capillaries and helping with bruises and sore joints. It also brings a natural pleasing scent to many of our products. Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary has been extensively used since ancient times for a variety of purposes. The Romans gave special importance to the rosemary plant and used it in religious ceremonies. Its use extended to wedding ceremonies, food, cosmetics, and herbal care. The rosemary plant and its extract were also used by the ancient Egyptians as incense. Rosemary extract is used to help tone skin and reduce dryness. Rosemary essential oil stimulates cell renewal and improves dry or mature skin, easing lines and wrinkles. It is thought to improve circulation and reduce the appearance of broken capillaries and varicose veins. Rosemary essential oil has been used to assist with mental fatigue because it is thought to enhance mental clarity and aid alertness and concentration. Spearmint Essential Oil (Mentha spicata)

Spearmint is an uplifting oil, known for alleviating fatigue. It is known for its effect on the digestive system and for relieving aches and pains. Spearmint has been used to help with acne, asthma, bronchitis, colds, colic, congested skin, dermatitis, fatique, fevers, flatulence, flu, headache, nausea, sinusitis, and stress. Spearmint essential oil is found in the following Verefina products: Spearmint Essential Oil Single, Spearmint Olive Oil Lotion, Spearmint Aloe & Calendula Lotion, and Grapefruit/Spearmint Moisturizing Deodorant Cream.

Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea Tree essential oil (also known as Melaleuca) is best known for its antimicrobial activities. Tea Tree Oil contains Terpinen-4-ol which is reputed to be responsible for fighting all three categories of infectious organisms (bacteria, fungi, and viruses). Tea tree essential oil has been used to fight acne, dandruff, athleteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foot, lice, eczema and psoriasis. In the treatment of moderate common acne, topical application of 5% tea tree oil has shown an effect comparable to 5% benzoyl peroxide. Tea Tree essential oil has also been used to help with burns, cold sores, gum disease, rashes, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis, warts, insect bites, flu, and wounds. What are Carrier Oils? Also referred to as vegetable oils and base oils, carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. They are named as such because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not have a concentrated aroma nor do they evaporate like essential oils. They are also used in the manufacturing of soaps and cosmetics, as well as for massage. There is a range of carrier oils, each with different beneficial properties.

Benefits and Properties of Verefina Carrier Oils Apricot Oil (Prunus armeniaca L.)

Apricot oil is a light but rich oil that is high in oleic and linoleic acids. It is good for all skin types and is especially good for mature skin, sensitive skin and skin that is inflamed or dry. Apricot oil is high in vitamin A and E and is known for its skin protective and nourishing properties. It is readily accepted by skin, giving it excellent softening and moisturizing properties. It is unique in its ability to penetrate skin without leaving an oily feel. Avocado Oil (Persea Americana)

Avocado oil is rich in vitamin A, B1, B2, Pantothenic acid, vitamin D, E, protein, lecithin and fatty acids. It is a good nutrient for dry skin and eczema. Avocado oil is said to have healing and regenerating qualities. Avocado oil is found in the following Verefina products: Lip Balm.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europaea)

Extra virgin olive oil is a versatile oil, being a favorite on both dry and irritated skin. It has a pleasing aroma. People living millennia ago in ancient Greece used extra virgin olive oil as one of their beauty secrets. In addition to being a natural, hypoallergenic way to moisturize skin, extra virgin olive oil has the added advantage of providing strong antioxidants, like vitamins A and E that help repair and renew skin that has been damaged from overexposure to sun, pollution, and other environmental hazards. These antioxidants have the natural ability to stimulate cells and return skin to a firmer, smoother, and healthier state. Whether applied to face or body, olive oil will penetrate deep into the skin and provide a long-lasting shield of moisture to keep skin smooth and supple. Fractionated Coconut Oil (Caprylic/capric triglyceride)

Fractionated coconut oil gets its name because it is a fraction, or a portion of coconut oil. It is made as the saturated fats from coconut oil are separated from the smaller fatty acids and long-chain triglyerides. This method of separation allows fractionated coconut oil to have some amazing advantages. With no double bonds, there is no oxidation, meaning that it doesn’t go rancid. Some other benefits of fractionated coconut oil include: •

Light, non-greasy and non-staining (easily washes out of clothing and sheets)

Excellent on skin – a natural and safe moisturizer

Leaves skin smooth with no greasy feeling

•

Does not clog pores

Fractionated coconut oil is a very good choice for use with essential oils, as it helps carry therapeutic oils under the skin. Fractionated coconut oil is especially useful when a light oil is desired. Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera)

Grapes have been heralded for their medicinal value for thousands of years. European folk healers made an ointment from the sap of grapevines to treat skin and eye diseases. Grapes (or the chemicals within them) especially oligomeric proanthocyanindin complexes (OPCs) Verefina Product Guide 20

have been touted as powerful antioxidants. Some people believe they help treat a number of conditions, including aging skin. Grapeseed Oil is a light oil with a satin-like finish. Its astringent qualities make it especially good for oily, acne prone skin. Grapeseed oil is found in the following Verefina products: Sea Buckthorn Facial Cream.

Jojoba Golden Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)

Jojoba golden oil has excellent skin care properties. When added to other carrier oils, it extends the shelf life of the product. Jojoba golden oil offers the traits of both an oil and a wax, making it an ideal ingredient in creams, lotions, and massage oil formulations. It is highly penetrating and closely resembles the natural sebum within our skin. It has natural antioxidant properties. Jojoba golden oil is found in the following Verefina products: Sugar Scrubs, Foaming Hand Soaps, Foaming Baby Soaps, Foaming Kids Soap, and Lip Balm.

Palm Kernel Oil (elaeis guineensis)

Palm kernel oil is expressed from the fruit kernels of the palm tree elaeis guinneenisis. It is an excellent ingredient in soaps because it increases lather and promotes moisture.

Rosehip Seed Oil (Rosa mosqueta)

Sea Buckthorn Oil is a natural source of vitamin A, vitamin E and several other tocopherols. It is reputed to be one of the best sources of natural antioxidants due to the high content of vitamin C. Sea buckthorn oil effectively combats dryness, the appearance of wrinkles, and other symptoms of dry, aged skin. It is also used to promote healing of burns, eczema and small cuts or wounds.

Rosehip Seed Oil is high in essential unsaturated fatty acids, namely oleic, linoleic, and linolenic. Rosehip seed oil is also high in vitamin A and retinoic acid, a natural constituent similar to Retin-A, but without the negative side effects. Retinoic acid markedly improves the complexion by visibly reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles, and improving pigmentation and fine texture of the skin. Lightly massaged into the skin, this oil acts on the cell membranes, supports their immune reaction, and initiates their regeneration. Studies have shown rosehip seed oil to have a positive effect on scars and stretch marks.
