THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

RESEARCH

6

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

This project is based on studying on our own creative hero, in the criteria of SPACE DESIGNERS. The first person that came to my mind is Sejima Kazuyo, who is famous in using feminine and soft elements to create architecture. After I have a target to study, I started to do research from the internet and library. Planning that I can integrate her work with my own understanding. I first define how the research will go on, from the large scale to small scale, from the outside to the inside.

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

APPEARANCE TEXTURE

I get inspiration from the appearance of her buildings and sketches from images. Which is mainly in colors that are pale, or transparent with layers.

9

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

INSIDE/SKETCHES

I also research Sejima’s own sketches and photos of the inside of the architecture. To further understand her personal and space features.

10

By integrating most of the research. I did brief information referencing on Sejima’s style, life and work timeline.

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

I want to use cube, circle and irregular shape as the main theme, or combining both of them together. Also emphasize her name as the focal point, placing in the middle or side by side. For the graphics, I try few options, such as put in the middle, upper part and full of the space.

15

VISUAL BRIAN DUMPING

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Horrizontal or Vertical? VERTICAL, to stand out the vertical spacing of Sejima's full name in Chinese character.

Black & White or Colors? BLACK & WHITE, since Sejima's architecture use grey and white tone colors.

16

妹島和世 妹島和世 妹島和世 妹島和世 San Serif or Serif? SERIF, becuase it's more representable for Japanese architects and the serif can outstand the name.

Alignment of graphics or text, whether is irregular placing or perfectly align. I will try different options later in experiments.

17

LARGER SCALE SKETCH

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Draw in larger scale to have more details and planning on text and informations. I choose both cube and curve elements in order to imply her style. 18

GRAPHICS

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

I choose this draft to further develop. Which the graphics are Sejima's significant pattern of architecture, flowers. And emphasizing her style by penetrating of her name between graphic and text.

I first simplify the appearance of her architecture using pen outline in AI, in order to make it more significant. From this, I learn how to use pen to trace the line more effectively, especially for the curve. 21

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

I draw mostly the fade or the bird view of the building, as most of her work are made out of basic shapes.

22

FOCAL POINT

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

A poster need focal point to attract attention. I choose one of her building's illustration to indicate the main idea. The square ones are too formal and less vivid than the curve ones, so I finally choose the flower pattern to be the main character.

23

READING ORDER

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Circular order Can make people read the whole poster. Horrizontal order Maybe more easy to read in A0 size, but may only focus at the bottom part.

24

GRAPHIC DETAILS

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

VISUAL HIERARCHY I Use 2 layers to make the graphic more outstanding, with 2 different transparency and overlapping. Also illustrate Sejima's penetrating element.

25

TEXT/FONT

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Font Kozuka Gothic Pr6N There is thickness of line to choose, in the name of EL L R M B H. I use B at the end since it is medium and just fits.

English version of her name is also needed, I try to place both together. The relation between text and graphics: By adding up penetrating layer on the text, this could intensify the poetic feeling of Sejima's work.s

I also try to use circles, part of her flower house, to combine with the text covered by a transparent layer.

INFORMATION

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

I use about three stage to introduce Sejima, making it clearer and step by step.

BACKGROUND

Circular layout

EARLY LIFE

STYLE

Horrizontal layout

Because of better reading and I want to illustrate the changes of Sejima's style and features from time to time, I added informations like number of year nearby the graphics.

27

ALIGNMENT

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Making alignment of text boxes on horrizontal layout is easy, by dividing into 3 sections.

For the circular layout is more difficult, I have to define 4 directions and avoid the lack of balance and interations with the centre graphic.

28

THE THE MAKING MAKING OF MY OF CREATIVE MY CREATIVE HERO HERO

Horrizontal layout After doing the final first draft, I think this layout is too plain and too much focus at the bottom part. But this layout is better and tidy for reading, where the information gathered in the same place. 29

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

CIrcularl layout I decided to use this layout as first final for presentation, as the order can lead readers to read from bottom to the top to the bottom, from the earliest life and work to the latest. 30

FIRST CRITQUE

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Reflection After the first A0 size printing and pin up, it's quite different from what I preview on screen. The color of the text seems too light but I like it in this way because the text do not catch much attention than the graphics and focal point. Some placing of the five graphics around are not balance enough. Keith adviced me to bring out more poetic feelings in my design. I was thinking to make it feels lighter, like how Sejima's work did, involvment to the surroudings. But this is a good experience for me to do a real size draft before the final. Make me noticing others' opnions and relocating the problems by myself. 31

REFINE

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Is a challenge for me to think of how to make a step further . I tried to add more squares and patterns to make the layout more fruitful. And tried to emphasize whether the centre graphics or the 5 boxes surrounded. But I think is too unnecessary afterwards because this become a reverse of Sejima's clean and minimal style. I went back to the initial design eventually.

33

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

I went back to the first final draft to have more improvement. I made the color looks lighter in hue and more layering, indicating the thin and overlapping structure of Sejima's architecture.

I made the 5 graphics in a smaller scale, which can help catch attention to the middle at first glance. The placement are also modified to fit more exact to the 5 arc of the flower.

FINAL CRITQUE

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

Some classmates commented that the poster didn't make significant difference, while I think little changes differ. I use the same black & white print as the last time, but it would be actually better to use color printing even the poster is in b&w. This is a new knowledge for me and I must aware of it next time.

THE MAKING OF MY CREATIVE HERO

“

During this project, luckily I didn't went through lots of difficulties to start the design, but this assignment helps me learn how to interpret a designer by my own understanding and presentation. Is challenging that Sejima is one of the Japanese architects have minimal style, is not easy to take the balance between minimal and vague content. By studying her work from multiple aspects, this help me to further comprehend her and develop my idea on poster design, Many skills are also developed during these few weeks. Is my first time to print such a large scale, is not easy to imagine the real one when editing on screen. Modification makes perfect, I think is a must to find out things that I can improve in a continuous cycle. I believe that the things I have learnt from this course must help me on presentation in the future.
