VERTICAL STUDIO

4

Our group did not have a certain target on the first time shooting, but we have few categories like Industry, Commercial, Tranportation etc. To capture the spatial of these different areas.

5

6

After few shootings, we have topics to focus on. About how small shops in the market used up the space by hanging the goods. Also how things are packed and juxtaposing between various shops. This help me to understand the community which Mong Kok has both the modern and old aspects. The spatial elements of local shops are far differ from those in malls, which everything is packed and not “tidy.

CUBE

Perfect Cube 150mmx150mmx150mm

9

As the cube have to be perfectly in 150mm, the final cutting of each cardboard actually have to be 145mm in order to fit the gap and joints.

10

Random Rubbish Bin in Central

During our field trip, we have drawings about sculpture and the rubbish bin (also a sculpture). I learn about observation of details and shadows of these and bring back the skills of sketch learnt from old school days.

PENETRATION LAYERING

12

Draft of layering, implication of how “layers” put together.

13

DRAFT

Draft of penetration, implication of how things or layers become transparent.

14

Thumbnail draft on the two cubes that I will be doing. I try to make the perfect cube void step by step.

15

Few models that I made before using the thick white cardboard. At first I tried to follow what I drew on the draft before, but later I turned to cut them randomly and saw how the changes can be and made it more complicated during the process.

16

Cube of Layering

17 17

18

I tried to make all six faces to be balanced but also in a different way. As the motion LAYERING, I layered few cardboards especially on the outside. While for the inside, I tend to use individual ones but it showed layers when looking it at certain angle. The cube is complicated and complexed as some of the stripes linked from one side to another side. This is the first time that I used the camera to shoot certain photos, I learnt how the shadow and light is going, what lighting and background I would be using, I think is quite useful and essential for design students to learn more about photography.

19

Drawing of the CUBE in a 45 Degree angle.

20

Drawings of different sections This is quite a good practice for me to know more about how the distance of things affects the line weight in drawings.

22

After the further making of cube, there was also an further development of a bigger surface which will combined with the cube I made.

23

I tried to follow the style with the previous cube, which has layers with individual and irregular cardboard. This divided into upper, middle and lower part. I did the middle part first by cutting irregular holes on a plain cardboard, then filled it up.

24

During the critique, we have to talk about other classmate’s work. My classmate described my work as complexed. I think I have more improvements on the “cover”, which is now too void as there are only cardboards are standing up, without any “rooftop”.

PLASTER & PLINTH

28

By using one of the joint between the cube and the extended platform, also have to be simplified. I drafted a few on how I was going to use foam to make a plaster mould. I decided to make the structure of the foam simple but the outcome of plaster can still be a complex one. Because is hard to pour in liquid lime and will be broken easily.

29

Challenge and Failure The first time of plaster making is failed when I found out it didn’t dry for few days and broken down some parts when I took the pink foam out. I realized that the proportion of the lime and water is wrong and not solid enough.

30

31

32

The plaster become more solid for the second time after knowing how to stir and make the proportion properly. Its still not perfect with little air bubbles and scares during the taken out of foam. But this is a good experience to actually making myself a SCULPTURE. This help me more understanding of how spatial works and real structure in solid.

33

Draft of Wooden Plinth

34

The plinth has to be supportive and with elements from the previous cube, so I tried to make a layer in the middle.

35

36

During the making of the plinth I finished the making of the middle box then the outer layer, which is much possible to make the joints together easily. Actually the middle wood board that placed horizontally didn’t cut really well, I hope I can have a better skill on cutting the wood next time.

40

REFLECTION About the critique, I received comments about good craftsmanship and the side of the plinth is less complexed as the front. I noticed that too and I agree that the layering on the upper part is not enough to implicate the complexity. But I learn a lot of skills during this making of wood, like how to buy the ply wood, defining different kinds of wood, how the joints are made and especially the craftsmanship. Is fun to make the imaginative draft into real stuff. And the temporary showing of our work in the campus is quite new to me too, when people walk passed and curious of what were these wood and plaster things. Is a great experience.

LANDSCAPE

42

St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery Happy Valley This is a field trip about cleaning up the tombstone and learn about the special cemetery that has a real long history in Hong Kong. Most of these tombstone has been placed for over decades or even in 1800s. Is always a taboo for traditional Chinese to talk about death so this is definitely another special experience for me. The cemetery are actually a hilly landscape and some of the tombstone placed irregularly. And after this we have to do a graveyard for a ghost in landscape form.

43

Joints of 4 wood blocks 2 in 80cm 2 in 60cm

44

Making landscape by using irregular triangles I did not make a real detailed plan on how I was going to build the landscape, because is hard to actually do something directly the same from the draft. Different shapes of triangles lead to various height and extension. The changes can be manifold.

COLLAGE

50

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Alexander McQueen is an English fashion designer and died in 2010. The reason I chose McQueen is that he is a genius and unlimited talent on his fashion design, this can also be shown in the interior layout in his fashion show(especially for the SS 2001 collection). And the use of materials and texture of his work are also fabulous too.

51

52

Since McQueen use butterflies in many of his work, I used them as patterns and abstract in size surrounded. And I made a few layers on the plaster and the plinth, to make it reflect more shadows and more popped up. After critique, I decided to add more human figures into the collage and more architectural elements such as the school McQueen had studied and models on his runway. Also more layer have to be added and popped.

53

54

Is challenging to plan how to use the space properly in this collage. I added some architecture such as Central Saint Martins, McQueen headquarters and flagship store in London. With perspective extended from the plinth. More popped up layer at the top and bottom to add more elements about him and his work. I removed his big headshot as its too space required and I changed it to smaller scale. The collage then have a clearer focal point in the middle. By using the lighting at one side, the shadows of the popped up layer become obvious.

REFLECTION

56

This semester passed real quick and this is a good start of my university. Of course I have learnt a lot of things such as how to have a design thinking, the concept and the practical skill. It is also a great experience to know new classmates and the way to work in studio is much more fun and open minded than working myself at home. Is mind blowing to talk about ideas with each other and give other some advice. The course is step by step, from the basic to advance, just like how the most simplicity of a cube to develop into a complicated form, than the final work that wrapped up the things up. Is different from the study routine that I used to have, which projects last just for few lessons. This method is much more helpful on concept developing and own thinking. I learn various things in this studio, not only practical stuff but also how to get along with people. This semester taught me the basic and essential things and help me further in the next three years. Of course I have lots of improvements can be done and I think I still need more passion to dive into my study, but the end has no end, I believe I can do better and better in the next semester.
