Newsletter Friday, 7th June 2013 Dear Parent/Carer A year ago, Ofsted visited us and judged us as a good school. It is important to reflect on the progress of our journey and to evaluate where we are with the targets that were set: Target 1: Secure outstanding achievement for all, through more consistently outstanding teaching, by increasing opportunities in lessons for students to think critically and independently, and to take a lead role in developing their own and one another’s learning. The evidence that we have through our rigorous performance management, mini Ofsted organized with the LA shows that 87% of the lessons are good or better. We are continuing our work on Independent Learning and Challenging the thinking of our students. This academic year our INSET days have focused on developing outstanding learning experiences to engage and develop our students. Staff meet every Tuesday after school to collaborative plan together in departments to ensure high quality, differentiated learning experiences for all to develop our learners ability to work independently and make 4 levels of progress. The development of the use of iPads in the classroom is also enhancing the learning experiences for our students. We have put plans in place to work with the staff from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newcastle. The school was inspected by Ofsted in 2012 and was judged to be outstanding in all 4 categories. Target 2: Ensure that the pace of improvement in science is sustained so that progress in science lessons is consistently at least good and outcomes reflect this by exceeding national averages. As you may know, Raj Patel (Assistant Headteacher) line manages Science and has worked closely with Rebecca Brice (Head of Department). Rebecca Brice has been incredibly inspiring with her staff to ensure that they deliver good or outstanding lessons. As students have taken their modular Core exams in Science, we already know that we are on 71% A*-C in Core Science. We are aiming to achieve 73% 2A*-C which is significantly above national average. 29 students will achieve 3A*-C by completing separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs. This will include more A/A* than ever before at Neville Lovett School. Recent student surveys have shown that 96% of students feel that teaching is at least good, and 97% feel challenged in science. Staff have worked hard to raise student aspirations, ensure rapid progress during revision lessons, and run targeted extra support sessions every evening for 2 months in the run up to exams. Target 3: Improve attendance so that it is at least above average for all groups of students by September 2013. The work of our Attendance Officer, Samantha Jeffries, the MIS team, the Progress Leaders and the Tutors has been relentless and rigorous and as a result has produced outstanding results. Above average as per Ofsted’s grading is 93.95% and above. Overall our attendance is above this at 94.26%.
Newsletter Friday, 7th June 2013 Target 4: Review and improve systems for communicating and consulting with parents and carers so that they are better informed about changes and developments in school and the rationale behind them. We have expanded our range of communication methods, and have tried to be a little more systematic in what we do. Our innovation include:
Weekly newsletter covering all year groups
Departments Twitter
A much-improved and developing school website
Parents’ consultation on becoming an Academy
On top of these, we retain the usual methods including:
Parents’ evening
Option evenings
Information evenings for transition
Letters home
Text home
Telephone surveys (to a random sample of parents)
Coffee morning/afternoon/evening
Ilona Holt, our receptionist has been ensuring that your queries and requests reach the right person, and that emails and phone calls are returned as promptly as might be expected. If there is anything else that we could do, then please do let me know. Thank you very much. Nadine Powrie Headteacher
Newsletter Friday, 7th June 2013 New Staff Members Caitlin Earey Teacher of Mathematics
My name is Miss Caitlin Earey and I started at the Neville Lovett Community School as the newest member of the Mathematics Department on 3rd June 2013. I will be beginning my NQT year this September, having just completed my degree in Mathematics Teaching at the University of Chichester. I am very happy to have been appointed at this school. The department are lovely to work with and have been very helpful, with the rest of the staff being warm and friendly whilst I’m trying to find my way around. The pupils have also been very welcoming and excited to have a new teacher. Mathematics has always been my favourite subject, and I am keen to be sharing my knowledge with others in a variety of creative and engaging ways. I am looking forward to my time here at Neville Lovett and being a part of its journey, as well as the school being a part of mine. Lee Setford IT Network Manager
My name is Lee Setford & I’m the new IT Network Manager. Previously, I worked at Brookfield Community School for 4 years in a very similar capacity. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to renew & enrich Neville Lovett’s use of ICT & ensure that the school is on a good path for progression towards becoming an outstanding school by providing the staff & students with the tools & resources that they need to succeed now & into the future. Investing in new servers & storage provides the canvas from which we can offer much improved & new exciting IT services for all. Investing in wireless technologies provides both students & staff with the freedom of bringing technology aided learning to them rather than the old model or being tethered to a desk or desktop. Using mobile devices as tools for learning also allows for a more independent style of learning & thus, presents opportunities for learning in a more engaging fashion. Combining all these together, I believe sets Neville Lovett’s ICT on a good path looking ahead to the future of supporting technology in the classroom. Dates for your Diary Date
