Everyone's a winner One of our key roles at NAE is to nurture and share the makings of talented contemporary artists. This season we launch our first official prize-giving NAE Open exhibition, five years on from Culture Cloud, our experiment to test digital engagement and open platforms. This year’s judging panel has worked hard with the NAE team to make the long list of exhibiting artists, so a big thanks to Beverley Sterling, Jagdish Patel, Louise Fedotov-Clements, Matthew Chesney, Christine Eyene, Salma Tuqan and Sarah Perks. The local to national response has been strong with a variety of visual artforms including live art and film, with close to 700 art works from nearly 300 artists applying. CaféBar last orders
The Central Gallery features images of the Romanian community of Hyson Green, and on the forecourt are a series of profound and haunting photographs by Nirvair Singh Rai featuring paintings by Janhavi Sharma marking 100 years of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. Nottingham Arts Mela returns over a five day extravaganza culminating at the botanical oasis, Arboretum Park, exploring Illusions in Transit as the theme this year. Our international programme, Here There & Everywhere, invites Ibrahim Ahmed and Ashok Vish to be our resident artists to share their journeys and art works with the UK art ecology. And finally we realise Architecture of Shame, an exhibition and re-imagination of space in Matera, European Capital of Culture in South Italy. Bravo!

Enjoy a huge variety of art at NAE this summer, with works in painting, drawing, video, live art, sculpture, installation and mixed media by over 50 artists. The NAE Open was created through an open application process which received nearly 700 submissions. A panel of judges viewed each to select what they felt to be the most innovative and accomplished works, creating a snapshot of contemporary fine art practice today. Given NAE’s key priorities in supporting both culturally diverse and local talent, the exhibition was open to all artists living in Nottinghamshire and also to artists of culturally diverse heritage and those exploring diversity within their practice living anywhere in the UK.

A key aim of the NAE Open is to create a platform which supports the development of artists and raises their profile. Beyond the public exhibition itself, a number of prizes will be awarded in a special ceremony on Friday 23 August. These include the £1,500 Public Choice Prize, which every visitor to the exhibition can contribute to. Be sure to cast your vote when you visit the galleries – voting closes Thursday 22 August 2019. The NAE Open also creates the opportunity to buy original art with a number of works available for sale. 5

Positive Images CENTRAL GALLERY 13 July – 8 September 2019
ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION
Together Today and New Art Exchange are proud to be presenting Positive Images, a photographic exhibition that displays a snapshot into the lives of Nottingham’s Romanian community. Developed over a six month period by Alina Moldovean, Stelian Afrasinei, Minerva Hartley and five volunteers, the aim of the project is to provide insight into the life of our local community by sharing their stories and experiences of living in the UK. The resulting exhibition presented here at NAE is made up of a collection of portraits and interviews collected by the group. The project is developed in partnership with Inspire Foundation and Nottingham City Council.
Please note that there is limited access to the Central Gallery due to its location on the stairs. A printed version of the show is available from reception.

Nirvair Singh Rai & Janhavi Sharma: Memory of Land NAE FORECOURT 1 August – 8 September 2019
Photographer and filmmaker Nirvair Singh Rai and visual artist Janhavi Sharma have embarked on a research project across the Punjab region of India and the holy city of Amritsar to create a new body of work. The installation, combining photography and digitally manipulated painting, seeks to remember the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre of 1919 which saw British Indian Army troops fire upon unarmed Indian civilians who were assembled for a peaceful protest and to honour the Sikh festival of Baisakhi.
Through visiting the site, and interviewing local communities, Rai and Sharma seek to understand the psychology of surviving grief through the memory of land; land being the only witness left 100 years on from this deplorable act. Part of Here There & Everywhere and Nottingham Arts Mela 2019.

Ghungaroo Vadan is an experimental performance using ghungaroos and OSC messages sent from mobile phone to MAX/MSP. It explores the overlapping spaces between spirituality and technology through combining Indian classical dance elements and technological embodiment.
Uro is about the idea of dying and rebirth, depression and awaking. In this durational performance, the artist interacts with clay and water on her body. The weight of the clay becomes a force that she works with and against over the hours of the performance. Sitting on the skin as a weighty, damp material, it becomes a solid foundation and morphs the body.

Together Today present an exhibition of photographs capturing a snapshot of the lives of Nottingham’s Romanian community. This volunteer led project invites you to a celebration day, hosted in collaboration with the Syrian community. The event will include craft activities for all ages and talks led by representatives of the Romanian Embassy. The exhibition hopes to challenge mainstream preconceptions about Romanian culture and way of life.

Nottingham-based Amity are a community organisation dedicated to encouraging everyone to engage with the arts. They present the magnificent Flamenco dance talent of Rebeca Ortega, internationally recognised for her knowledge of Flamenco music and Cante. As part of Nottingham Pride week, All Black Connect present Wanuri Kahius’ Rafiki (2018). The film tells the story of friendship and a tender love that grows between two young women, Kena and Ziki, amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya. The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by All Black Connect in collaboration with Nottingham Contemporary’s 1525 collective.

NAE Open selected artist Umama Hamido performs this cinematic live art piece combining film, text, soundscore and rap. Presenting fictional memoirs based on hallucinations and dreams, out-of-body experiences and superpowers, the scenes slip between Akka in Palestine, a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, Hamido’s birthplace in Beirut and the artist’s current home city, London. The work was developed with her friend Tareq Al-Jazzar.

Henna artist Shaz Mehndi presents this unique opportunity for beginners to experience working with natural henna and learn how this staple of body decoration, used all over the world, is created and mastered. Working with henna on paper to follow simple designs and even designing your own, experienced artist and entrepreneur Shaz will guide you through a step by step process. Weaving together a joyous fusion of Egyptian, Nubian and British musical traditions, Kaddal Merrill is the collaboration of classically trained Egyptian flautist Fayrouz Kaddal and innovative British folk fiddler Daniel Merrill. The percussion of traditional Middle Eastern drums provides intricate and heady beats through which the flute and violin dive, dance and spin. Is it folk? Is it world music? Both and neither. CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
REAL CREATIVE FUTURES Real Creative Futures is our creative and digital business support programme. It is part of the EU and ACE funded Big House consortium. We’re working with creative entrepreneurs and businesses across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Since 2017, Real Creative Futures has provided 163 business and creativefocussed workshops and events, provided 241 hours of business coaching and supported the growth of 167 new businesses and entrepreneurs. rcf@nae.org.uk
EXPERIMENTOR ExperiMentor is a safe and supportive initiative designed to encourage the development of visual artists and other creatives. The programme, built in response to, and around the needs of individual artists, intends to provide the space, time and resources for research and development, allowing for artistic experimentation and leading to the production of new work. An international artistic collaboration showcasing the finest culturally diverse contemporary art practices connecting cities across the world... dialogues between the global south and north… and at the centre the black cube, NAE, in Hyson Green Nottingham. A key feature of HTE is the Ambition for Excellence programme, Absence, inspired by Mimesis: African Soldier by John Akomfrah. See page 23 for details.
Ibrahim Ahmed works with mixed media, sculpture, and installation. He engages subjects related to colonisation, structures of power, cultural interactions, and fluid identity, generating discussion around ideas of the self and notions of authenticity within the parameters of the nation-state. Ashok Vish’s interests lie in exploring the relations between human emotions and public and personal interests across various media, which affords him the opportunity to investigate the relationship between the imagery of fictional worlds and the conditions of reality. He works with film, video and photography.
Matera European Capital of Culture 2019: In this ancient city a spectacle of beautiful architecture and canyon landscapes in South Italy. Architecture of Shame and Matera Citta Aperta will take place in July and September 2019 respectively.

The Craft & Culture Fair returns, and we’re looking to showcase the work of makers, crafters and designers from all around us in the local community. We are currently accepting applications to book stalls and would love to hear from you. It is FREE to apply and FREE to sell your work.
Are you a creative with work to sell? Do you make beautiful knitted gloves and scarves, or are you the best shea butter whipper in the city? Can you work wonders with Dutch wax cotton or create beautiful batik patterns?

NAE Touring
Looking Ahead
The hugely popular NAE exhibition, Sounds Like Her, curated by Christine Eyene and featuring the artists Ain Bailey, Sonia Boyce MBE RA, Linda O'Keeffe, Madeleine Mbida, Magda StawarskaBeavan and Christine Sun Kim, will be on show at York Art Gallery, 12 July – 15 September 2019.
MIMESIS: AFRICAN SOLDIER 28 September – 31 December 2019
This new multi-screen installation by artist John Akomfrah remembers the millions of African and colonial soldiers, labourers and carriers who served in the First World War. Projected onto three screens, the artwork combines newly created film shot by Akomfrah in locations around the world, a powerful sound score and historic footage that speaks to the African experience of the First World War. Commissioned by NAE, 14–18NOW and Smoking Dogs Films.
