Histories untold… If ART was an acronym it could stand for Art Realising Transcendence, which means that art can never really be defined. And so we have an extraordinary season that makes us all think and think again about the moment we are in, based on histories hidden and realised in the everyday DNA of our contemporary future. We present our major co-commission with 14–18 NOW and Smoking Dogs Films, Mimesis: African Soldier by John Akomfrah, an epic three screen film exploring archives and histories with theatrical inserts of colonial soldiers from the First World War. Akomfrah returns to Nottingham and NAE with this poetic remembrance — stories and narratives often subsumed by mainstream narratives, forgotten in the ‘white man’s’ World War of 1914–1918.

Mimesis: African Soldier MAIN GALLERY 27 September — 31 December 2019 EXHIBITION LAUNCH Thursday 26 September, 7pm—9pm
Mimesis: African Soldier is a multi-screen installation by artist John Akomfrah that remembers the millions of African and colonial soldiers, labourers and carriers who served in the First World War. Projected onto three screens, the artwork combines newly created film, shot by Akomfrah in locations around the world, a powerful sound score and historic footage that speak to the African experience of the First World War.
John Akomfrah is best known for his multi-screen installations, such as Purple (2017), Precarity (2017) and Vertigo Sea (2015). Since founding the influential Black Audio Film Collective in 1982, his work has taken on a multi-layered visual style that fuses archival material and newly shot footage. Continuing this practice, Mimesis: African Soldier sees Akomfrah use historic film to tell some of the lesser known stories of the First World War.
The First World War was waged between empires that were global in their ambitions and reach. Between 1914 and 1918, millions of African and colonial soldiers served in long campaigns that spanned the whole of the African and European continents, contributing to victories throughout the First World War. These soldiers from British and French African territories were brought to Europe’s western front, where hundreds of thousands lost their lives alongside unknown, unheralded and undocumented African labourers and carriers. Mimesis: African Soldier seeks to commemorate these Africans and colonial soldiers who fought, served and died during the First World War.

When The Snow Melts: The World Wars, Empire And Muslim Soldiers
Nearly four million Indians were ‘volunteers’ in the British Army during the two World Wars. The Great Wars were truly global events, yet the process of public remembrance is often performed through the prism of national identity. Working in collaboration with local Muslim families with connections to the Second World War, artists Jagdish Patel and Farida Makki have used personal memory and archival material to pose questions about the process of war memorialisation, empire and its interconnections to our present-day identities.

This installation by photographer and filmmaker Nirvair Singh Rai and visual artist Janhavi Sharma combines photography and digitally manipulated painting. The installation seeks to remember the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre of 1919 which saw British Indian Army troops fire upon unarmed Indian civilians who assembled for a peaceful protest and to honour the Sikh festival of Baisakhi.

Commissioned by NAE, Does Anybody Leave Heaven?, is an assemblage tapestry made with textile items found in Egyptian street markets, clothing, bags and other items, which are printed with the flag of the United States of America.Installed at Primary with photographs, audio and a new video work by Karim El Hayawan, the work is a commentary on the constructed mythology and fetishism surrounding the US as a place of desire and opportunity, particularly by underprivileged young males who have normalised wearing the American flag in the streets of Cairo. Sistas Against Cancer, Self Help UK and Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis Service present a photographic exhibition representing the experiences of women affected by cancer within the Black Asian Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) community. Over a four month period, local photographer Michael Ellis has captured candid glimpses into the experiences of the Sistas' individual cancer journeys. NAE is showcasing these images and the stories behind them to raise awareness within the BAMER community about cancer and the support available.
NAE is pleased to support the second edition of Off Centre Photo Festival, an independent project that promotes and encourages creative photographic practice across the East Midlands. Celebrating the diversity of the local photography community, this multisite festival will feature artists at all career stages, from established editorial photographers to local young people. NAE will feature selected works from the festival in our Central Gallery space and host its official launch (see page 13).

John Akomfrah is a widely respected artist and filmmaker, whose works are characterised by their investigations into memory and postcolonialism, and exploration of the experiences of migrant diasporas globally. Speaking with Skinder Hundal (CEO of NAE) and Jenny Waldman (Director of 14–18 NOW ), Akomfrah will be discussing Mimesis: African Soldier. Reflecting on the long-ignored history of African soldiers and soldiers of colour from across the globe during the First World War, the piece fuses unique archival material with newly created footage.

NAE's CaféBar is the perfect venue for an evening of creative and relaxed vibes. All Black Connect presents a relaxed painting session designed and lead by local artist Kim Thompson. Materials are provided and there will be cocktail specials on offer with a back drop of classic and contemporary RnB presented by Coralie. The night’s festivities are the perfect precursor for the much celebrated classic RnB night Honeydips at Hockley’s Bar 11.
Facilitator Mellonie Page leads a contemporary dance workshop with performing arts. Through dance, devising, debate and performance set to Solonge Knowles’ song, Don’t Touch My Hair, this workshop explores the topic of ‘hair petting’, the touching of black or mixed raced people’s hair without their permission. The session looks closely at objectifying individuals as other, as though our natural hair is in some way odd or offensive.
Join Kehinde Andrews, Arit Etukudo and Omara Dyer-Johnson to explore how Resistance is understood within different contexts, be that art, film or literature; fiction or real life. The speakers will consider how speculative fiction, especially Afrofuturism, as a genre has the ability to explore social and ethical issues whilst reimaging black identity projected within the surreal.
Delving into a century of a film genre that utilised, caricatured, exploited, side-lined, and finally embraced them, Horror Noire traces the untold history of black Americans in Hollywood through their connection to the horror genre. Adapting Robin Means Coleman’s seminal book, Horror Noire, we will present the living and the dead, using new and archival interviews from scholars and creators; the voices who survived the genre’s past trends, to those shaping its future.
Nottingham’s Independent Photo Festival, Off Centre, is back. After a highly successful first edition in 2018, this event will officially launch the second edition of this city-wide festival and celebrate the local photographers who have been chosen to take part. Preview NAE’s presentation of the festival in our Central Gallery, meet the artists and enjoy a drinks reception with presentations by the event organisers.

Nearly ten million soldiers were recruited to the British Army from Asia and Africa during the World Wars, and many millions were involved as civilians. Chaired by artist, Jagdish Patel, with researcher Tomar Beh, this talk goes beyond military history, to explore the experience of war on a social and cultural level, looking at the impact of war on Muslim families in Nottingham today. Film maker, Catherine Leen will show her documentary Betrayal, and local Muslim families will talk through their Second World War histories.

Both yoga and the visual art ask us to slow down, pause and be in the present moment. During this unique wellbeing experience, you will have time to mindfully explore the current exhibition, followed by a yoga session with Parmjit Sagoo. By slowing down you will absorb and explore the works on view. Afterwards, the yoga session will take you through gentle and slow flow yoga, leaving you feeling relaxed and renewed within both mind and body. No prior experience of yoga or art necessary.

Artist Jagdish Patel leads a tour of When the Snow Melts, exploring issues around war and food supply. A film by Michel Ocelot based on a traditional West African folk tale. The film tells a story of the 10cm tall Kirikou, a small boy who undertakes a journey in order to discover the secret of the evil sorceress, who had cursed his village. There are a range of options for group visits to NAE. Associate Artists are available to lead creative workshops for all key stages at a competitive price. These workshops can be tailored to your school group's specific art skill progression or curriculum focus. PUNJABI CAFÉ
Mellonie Page is a versatile mezzo soprano singer/ songwriter. Her roots are in RnB Gospel and 80’s Soul music, although other influences include Roots Rock Reggae, Lovers Rock, Musical Theatre, Pop, Rap and Jazz. So she can be a bit dramatic, even when singing some vintage Bob Marley. She has many years of experience as a lead and backing vocalist, in studio and live settings. Mellonie is currently writing new music with husband and Co-Producer Winnie Williams from the 90’s dance band KWS. They both perform regularly in Nottingham and the surrounding areas.

Join us for a family friendly afternoon, celebrating Punjabi culture! Inspired by the Punjab region across India and Pakistan, this exciting café event will feature a DJ playing ‘old school’ Punjabi tunes, a special café menu of Punjabi food classics, live music and poetry from this vibrant part of the world. This afternoon will also provide visitors with the opportunity to view all our current exhibitions.
In the classic tradition of the left bank in Paris and Marc Sautet’s rejuvenation of the idea of philosophical discussion, the Big House RCF are hosting an evening café session as part of the Off Centre festival. The concept is to bring photographers together in a public friendly forum where they can discuss ideas.

Looking Ahead
The hugely popular NAE exhibition Africa State of Mind, curated by Ekow Eshun, will be showing at the Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco, USA from 4 September — 15 November 2019. The exhibition will also be touring to the Royal West of Academy England, Bristol from 14 December — 1 March 2020. Part of Here, There & Everywhere.
In early 2020 we present Shezad Dawood’s exhibition Encroachments. This newly commissioned work and award winning collection, takes a pragmatic and oblique look at the relations between Pakistan and the US since the partition in 1947 through a new virtual reality environment, contained within an immersive installation of neon, wallpaper, sculpture and print.
The very successful Big House programme is coming to an end this September but don’t fret as funding will be in place shortly for the Big House extension, with more workshops, events and business coaching from January
We will also have funding for more business coaching and mentoring through an improved and streamlined coaching model.
It's been a great few years for Real Creative Futures, which has included: • 300 hours of business coaching sessions • 245 hours of mentoring sessions • 108 workshops • 6 showcase events • 24 networking events

ExperiMentor is NAE’s artist’s development programme that provides bespoke support for artists of all disciplines. The programme, which is built in response to, and around the needs of our 16 current artists, intends to provide the space, time and resources for research and development, allowing for artistic experimentation, leading to the production of new work and project initiatives.
Fresh from the show’s summer presentation at York Art Gallery, Sounds Like Her, curated by Christine Eyene, will open at Gallery Oldham, 14 December — 7 March 2020.
