“to the bread” by Georgi Dimitrov 2

a story never ends 2 GOATMILK: A FLASHBACK 2013-2003* 24-26 May 2013 In 2013 the Goatmilk Festival of Memories in Bela Rechka celebrates it’s 10th birthday. Every year the festival explores a specific topic – through reflections and actions – with local examples from Bela Rechka and the Northwestern region – the stolen and destroyed common places for the people in the village, the abandonment, the personal regional memories about important events in our past, the man as a storyteller and other spontaneous ideas. In 2013 we invite you all - friends and guests – to share your memories and stories from the festivals, to take part in the actions of this year and to come up with concrete ideas in the following 4 main topics : SPACE in Bela Rechka EXPERIENCES in Bela Rechka THE QUESTIONS OF BELA RECHKA: MEMORY AND POWER RE-CYCLING BELA RECHKA YOU ARE WELCOME TO PROPOSE YOUR IDEA AND WRITE TO US ON NOVAKULTURA@GMAIL.COM. Ideas are accepted till 28 February 2013. We expect from all our friends and guests to think about covering their own expenses in preparation of their ideas. Our aim is to see how good ideas work together and how self-financing and volunteering can produce a change. *the text is not complete. full description at http://novakultura.org/goat-milk/en/

On 1st of March, I sent the proposal for my contribution to the festival, together with the story from my first visit to Bela Rechka. Shortly the proposal was:

Bread with story 2 day workshop - open A workshop for bread, for the people to be together around the bread, to share knowledge, experience. For the young, old, for the guests and the locals. The bread as a join spot for relatives, friends, strangers. We will bake the two days. ***the first day is to show how to prepare sour dough, a way to prepare the bread and then baking. ***the second day we invite the participants from the previous day to think of their own bread, which should tell their personal story, so they could see the bread making process as an expression of their feelings.

The proposal was warmly wellcomed.

the bread 2 My brother learned baking from my grandmother, so that’s how I started making bread at home. I noticed how much it is appreciated by various people, and how it connects and brings people closer, creating a home like feeling. Later I started preparing bread with sour dough, which created tastier bread with no additives. Making your own bread also has a health and economic impact, and in the end it is the first step towards a food sovereignty. Preparing what you eat makes you aware of the origins of the ingredients, and the ways of preparing and why the factory bread, transportation and packing are no good.

being there 2 One day befote the festival, surrounded with new faces, new smells, pure nature and history in every corner. Every step brings freshness. The place is set. It is the house of baba Deshka, which I share with 5 other people. In the small yard there is a tiny but powerful stream. After collecting wood for the fire oven, I begin to make bread, outside is nothing but nature sounds, blue sky and sun on my back. Being there, you realise the context, your environment and your equipment.

saturday morning 2

I had no idea how many people will show up, or when. But the good thing about being at Bela Rechka is that everything happens on time*. In the end I was standing in front of 20-30 people, making bread, and after a while, some of these people were preparing bread all together in the small yard. I will present the photo essay by Andrey Nikolov.

*the arrival of the TV crew happened after the end of the workshop, but we were still preparing bread for the second round. We did it, because an old lady was passing by and suggested to put cheese inside the bread. Thrully good idea. video (after 45th min, Bulgarian) - http://bnt.bg/bg/productions/57/edition/32234/ recepta_za_kultura_1_uni_2013

Thanks to the many helpers, we were able to make two rounds of bread in the fire oven, which actually was never used for baking bread.

sunday noon 2 Sitting on the grass, drinking herbal tea, we started revealing more about ourselves and how this place and people influence us, and in the end, how we could transfer this through the process of bread making. Maybe some typical ingridients from the village, maybe our hand print could be an expression. I became a transmitter of a faraway participant, who I met in my first visit to Bela Rechka. She sent me a poem representing her story.

Bela Rechka 2011 ~ Goat Milk Impressions ~ Elisabeth Klein The Morning is filled with fog and sheepy sounds Nature welcomes us broadly. People meet on the grassy square close to the old bakinghouse Here you meet faces: Homeful faces and excitingly new faces By times they melt together into a happy crowd. Australia, Norway, Greece, Germany, Bulgaria, Bulgaria, Movement and Music, Engagement and Freedom, helping hands everywhere Songs melt through the air and conquer our hearts. And suddenly: feeling homelessly home, while the brassband is playing, Somebody you love, running through the rain to join the dance. Three days after - a hard-working bunch of artists Creating foolish meaningfulness, together We invite everybody. Again three days after - stillness. The only girl picks me up for a walk into the flourishing wild.
