EDITORIAL COMMENT
Little triggers
YOU WOULD have thought a mature market such as MI would have been through its period of consolidation. Every market goes through that cycle of JURZWK DQG WKHQ DFTXLVLWLRQ ZKHUH ˉUPV are established and are then eventually taken over until you end up with only a handful of corporates controlling a portfolio of well-loved brands. We’ve had all that. Many years ago. Which is why it is now rare for brands to change ownership and even rarer for a new brand to challenge the status quo. The economic situation may have changed that, with Fender either axing or RIˊRDGLQJ EUDQGV ZLWK UHJXODULW\ OHDGLQJ to new distribution agreements or owners and, elsewhere, audio and MI specialist TC Group also up for sale. There’s a bit of a shake up going on at the moment. It’s by no means an earthquake but it’s certainly a tremor that shows the market isn’t FRPSOHWHO\ VROLGLˉHG Takamine looks like it will be the latest line that Fender has decided it can do without and will be looking for a new home. Meanwhile, clever Danish audio innovator TC Group is looking to move up to a new level with a new owner or new funding, clearly feeling its current situation limits its ambitions. Which is great news for the market. MI is desperate for new ideas and companies that can invent and not merely repackage. A resurgent Takamine, a buoyant Guild and a more ambitious TC Group has to be good news for the market.

BY RONNIE DUNGAN What’s the rationale behind the sale? This is about generating capital to achieve further growth, I assume? “We’ve seen annual growth of ten per cent on average in the past years, and forecast the same growth under the current ownership. However, we have an opportunity to grow VLJQLˋFDQWO\ IDVWHU ZLWK VWURQJHU ˋQDQFLDO backing. That, combined with the wish for some shareholders to exit, is the main reason for putting the company up for sale. Is a sale to a venture capitalist your favoured option, or are you expecting a competitor to make an offer for TC? “We have no favoured option, and have interest from both types of companies. Assuming the deal happens, how would that change what TC can achieve? “This will depend on who buys the company, but there is no doubt that a sale will result in a strengthening of the company and higher growth building on our strength of making highly innovative products. What areas do you think TC needs to strengthen? “Interestingly, we have opportunities to strengthen all of our market areas. Are there any sectors you think TC should be operating in that it currently isn’t? “There are several options for taking on new areas, but for the time being we have plenty of growth and expansion opportunities and plenty more to offer in our four markets: Install and Tour, Broadcast and Production, Residential, and MI.
As successful as it currently is, has TC XQGHUDFKLHYHG EHFDXVH RI Ë‹QDQFLDO restrictions? “Historically, only to a limited extent. But moving forward, we’d not be able to realise the true potential of the company under the current ownership, where additional funding and additional synergies are limited.â€? Are market conditions right for a deal of this size? “Yes. Audio market conditions are good at the moment for innovative companies, and the audio M&A scene is currently very active due both to capital availability generally, as well as a changing competitive landscape in the Audio Industry, resulting in a strategic need for many companies to strengthen their position through acquisitions.â€? What are you expecting the company to be valued at? Ȥ:H KDYH QRW VHW D Ë‹[HG DPRXQW ČĽ And what’s your current take on the shape of the MI market in the UK and Europe? “The effect of a sale will of course depend on the acquirer. But, generally, we are very FRQË‹GHQW DERXW RXU RSSRUWXQLWLHV LQ WKH musical instrument market, which has grown rapidly for us over the course of the past Ë‹YH \HDUV :H KDYH YHU\ VROLG SODQV DORQJ with a product ideas catalogue, which is enormously long. “The main effect of a sale of TC Group for our MI division probably is going to be that we can execute those plans and ideas faster than we otherwise are able to.â€?

WITH AN EVER-GROWING international reach, the Music China exhibition has gone from strength to strength over the past decade or so. For many, the show offers a unique opportunity to engage with a network of suppliers, manufacturers and retailers, with whom they might not always be able to connect with via the western mainstays that are NAMM and Messe Frankfurt. Such is the appeal of the show these days that a new ninth hall was announced earlier this year in order to accommodate escalating exhibitor and visitor numbers, which, unsurprisingly, have topped 2013’s record-breaking outing. Mark Gooday, founder of Ashdown Engineering, said: “The show has been good - guitar amps are selling better, bass amps are selling better. ith the VoiceSolo FX150, TC-Helicon has created a multi-purpose system engineered to solve two of the most common problems for musicians: hearing themselves properly on stage and having a monitor that meets personal performance needs by giving direct control. Featuring a custom designed 6.5” two-way coaxial driver from sister company Tannoy, VoiceSolo FX150 is built to deliver enhanced volume, musical clarity and premium full range punch, without losing any of its dynamics. Not only does VoiceSolo FX150 provide the Full Range Flat Response (FRFR) system for guitar, it also delivers deep bass, while users can assign independent reverb and EQ. A one-button Edit control of all levels and parameters is incorporated, making dialing-in a personal mix simple. The Easy Grip mic-stand mounting system allows users to set up in seconds, with no additional attachments required. Coupled with extensive I/O options and a true stage monitor passthru, VoiceSolo FX150 provides a system suitable to a host of applications, from professional stage monitoring, to home practice whilst doubling as a full range music system too.

1RW IRU WKH ˉ UVW WLPH $PD]RQ FRPHV XQGHU ˉ UH TO MOST TRADITIONAL retail businesses Amazon is a ruthless competitor. If you look beyond that, at it’s effect on the wider economy, Amazon begins to look more like the devil incarnate. Amazon represents predatory capitalism at its absolute worst. The company sucks the life out of every economy in which it operates and gives nothing, absolutely nothing, back. The consumer blindly supports this corporate locust, why? Well Amazon is very, very good at what it does. It’s top of the Google search page, it’s cheaper than anyone else and your stuff turns up on time, every time. They even sort out problems with very little fuss. When the consumer turns off the BBC news after learning
about A&E department closures, schools that can’t afford teachers or councils WKDW FDQȢW DIIRUG WR Ë‹ [ SRW holes, he or she will sit at
distributors within our sector? These are business people; surely they see the bigger picture? It would seem not. We are fast
the computer and press the ‘buy it now’ button being blissfully unaware that all these things are connected. So what about
running out of distributors who have the spine to say no to this scourge on our economy. Perhaps Amazon really doesn’t
get favourable discounts but since it works on a net SURˋ W PDUJLQ RI OHVV WKDQ 0.5% it hardly matters. Do these suppliers honestly think that they’ve entered into a mutually respectful business partnership? The VHFRQG $PD]RQ ˋ QGV D way to cut the distributor out of the value chain; the beautiful relationship will be over. So what happens when a supplier says no? Amazon is a bully, and a number of distributors with enough guts to resist have found their products for sale on the site, with accurate pictures and products codes, priced at less than trade - even though they’ve never supplied Amazon. When a consumer buys this product they invariably get a counterfeit item, which looks like the real thing, but
it isn’t. This damages brand equity that might have taken decades to build. Of course, Amazon is publicly opposed to counterfeit product being sold on its site, but its relationship with ‘third party sellers’ makes interesting reading. Incidentally, you may want to Google ‘Lush Products and Amazon’ to see where saying ‘no’ to Amazon can ultimately lead. So any distributor who’s feeling wooed by Amazon’s whispered sweet nothings, beware; you are making a pact with the devil. Do you welcome the resurrection of older, iconic brand names?

Nostalgia and heritage can be useful assets in marketing a product and they can be useful tools for retailers to work with. I can therefore see why resurrecting a brand may appear to be a good business decision for PDQXIDFWXUHUV WU\LQJ WR ˋ QG D point of difference and gain a competitive advantage. However, in an already saturated market, the newold brand can struggle to gain WUDFWLRQ ZLWKRXW VLJQLˋ FDQW marketing investment and at this point it is really worth considering ‘is it worth it?’ That investment could instead be focused on making good product. Adrian Bamford Neath Music The resurrection of historic brands seems to be a double-edged sword; it can ZRUN UHDOO\ ZHOO RU IDOO ˌ DW RQ LWV face, depending on the ethos of the manufacturer. If you have a good, solid product range with some heart and soul behind it, the use of a historic

If this type of project is executed with some thought and market research it can work. I think that Barry Gibson did a great job with Burns - well thought out and good quality guitars that turned out to have a very strong appeal to many musicians, especially with older players. I’m amazed at how popular some of the limited editions are when we get them in secondhand, especially the Hank Marvin models. Another old-new brand that has impressed me are the Kay re-issues. Taking the very best elements of the early collectable ‘real’ Kays and building them to a high standard that has appealed to the modern player looking for something a bit different to use on stage that sounds good. There is real passion behind projects like this and you get the sense that they want to get it right and care about the end product. Some brands become defunct for a reason - no one wanted them then
This question has arrived with such great timing. Recently, there was a shining example of a dead horse that should have been left in its slumber being dragged by its rotten hoofs into the daylight. The one and only question in my mind was ‘why’? There has been some serious barrel scraping in our industry of late when it comes to reviving old brands and, although I can see good reason for bringing back amazingly successful blasts from the past, surely when they were pretty crap LQ WKH ˋ UVW SODFH WKHUH UHDOO\ LV QR point in doing so? Maybe the people involved in this particular form of grave robbing are hoping that no one will remember the original bad taste, which was left behind by some of these truly awful brands so that they can be born anew? The truth of the matter is I know that it is becoming virtually impossible for people to come up with an original name that has not been registered already by someone else somewhere. However, if there is a new product coming to market that is genuinely worthy of consideration, shouldn’t the perpetrators have at the very least made a little bit more of an effort when it comes to giving their product a name?
Mark Hedge Cookes Band Instruments No. There isn’t a great deal of evidence to show that to resurrect a defunct brand is a sound business decision. This goes for many industries. The Music Centre Bedford Music Centre’s owner, Bruce Murray, spills the beans on running a successful business and playing in a school band with Freddie Mercury! Tim Slater SDLG KLP D YLVLW WR ˉQG RXW PRUH BEDFORD MAY NOT be particularly celebrated as a thriving centre of musical excellence but renowned songwriter/guitarist John Verity (of Argent fame) and stadium rockers The Quireboys both feature prominently in the town’s lively and vibrant live music scene. Plenty of good local music venues including the popular Sunday afternoon rock gigs at Esquire’s club also guarantee that there are enough events to keep even the most rabid musical appetites sated. The Music Centre is Bedford’s main port of call for local musicians. Owner, Bruce Murray, and his longstanding store manager, Ross Anderson, state that their clientele extend from DV IDU DˋHOG DV QHLJKERXULQJ Buckinghamshire, Northants, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. The demise of heavyweight local competitors like Machinehead Music in nearby Hitchin has surely boosted Music Centre’s catchment area, but Bedford’s relatively central location and its relative proximity to North London
and the Midlands also strengthens its position as one of the area’s go to music stores. Like many of the more successful independents, Music Centre also offers music lessons and an in-house repairs service - “We can even repair washing machines!” Murray guffaws - alongside a rehearsal facility. The store has been in its current Tavistock Street location since 1995 and Murray insists that his policy of continually expanding his product lines alongside the store’s wide range of services is a major factor to his store’s widescale popularity. “The last shop was too small. You couldn’t display anything and we weren’t getting the footfall; it was dying a death. Our repair shop also helps because we can repair things here without having to send them away. We also have

There is nothing you can do about WKH ZHE \RX FDQȢW ˋJKW LW VR you just have to manage it.” Asked about the changing face of the UK distribution network and how it affects his business, Anderson is fairly open-minded. “As an independent I think that it’s easy to be scared of carrying high-end stock or different colours of a certain product, but you will lose sales if you don’t carry the right stock. Even though you might have to have your arm twisted to carry more stock, I feel that you will gain sales from it. In fact you need to carry a bit of high-end stock because, as we’ve seen with the starter market, people are more likely to go to Amazon or wherever for that entry-level stuff, but when someone is spending more and they’re not quite so sure of what to buy then they will be more likely to go to a specialist shop.”

What this man doesn’t know about MI retail...is probably the result of him not paying attention at the time...
0$<%( ,7Ƞ6 0< own fault for letting them come round, but I have a feeling that I may have accidentally sold the shop. I said in my column last month that I was looking to sell up but I didn’t really think it would happen so quickly. Or that anyone would actually be insane enough to buy it. Knowing what I know now I suppose I should have seen it coming. But that’s the marvellous thing about hindsight. It makes wise men of fools. You just can’t make it up. Actually, I say I might have accidentally sold the shop but Jason is the one that we should really put the blame on. He thought that the guy that that had come round to have a quick shufty at the shop was a tourist that had come looking for guitars. Pretty soon they get talking and he starts on about how the shop is really not doing so well and how I’m looking to get rid of it. Well, that’s not quite the truth, but it certainly piqued the guy’s interest. I suppose I’m open to offers but telling the guy that we were living on bread and water hasn’t shown us in the strongest light or put us in the best bargaining position. All I know is that I’ve now had a solid offer and that he doesn’t seem at all bothered by the collection of dust and dead insects that also make up some of our older stock items. It’s unfortunate that he’s an American because you can pretty much sell them anything. Now, I’m left pondering the deal that’s on the table and whether or not I really want to jack it in to take up my pipe and slippers. , JXHVV \RXȠOO ˉ QG RXW QH[W PRQWK %XW , GRQȠW NQRZ so much, if musicians no longer want a cuppa and a chat while sitting on an amp that’s stuck to the carpet, maybe I’m now in the wrong business.
