Big Year Coming This issue spans 2013 and 2014. The year-end is a good time to look back, and look ahead. What’s the status of some of the trends we’ve covered this past year? Certainly OTT/delivery to multiple receivers continued to dominate the scene in 2013, and will only continue to grab headlines next year. 3D continued to recede in 2013, while UltraHD garnered tentative interest.

In our next issue we’ll be running some short and long form commentary on what TV technology people should prepare for as we move forward. If you have an opinion----even just a few sentences----on what 2014 may have in store for us, shoot me a mail. We’d love to hear your opinion on using the cloud in broadcast applications, OTT, UltraHD, channel-in-a-box, implementing social media, or whatever trend you see coming. We’ll run a few of these in our Feb/March issue. Also, what might you like to see addressed in our pages next year?

One big focus for TV Technology Europe and sister publication TV Technology Asia/Pacific will be sport.

2014 is another of those ‘years of sport,’ with Olympics and a World Cup and more at the fore. I will actually be attending the Sochi Games in February, reporting back on the technologies the host broadcaster and rightsholders are using to make the home viewing experience often better than seeing an event live. Please let me know if I can stop by your rooms in the IBC if you will be there and can spare a few minutes to let me tell your story.

TV Technology is not alone in its sport focus for next year. The organization that puts on the very good Broadcast Asia show in Singapore every June just put out a release saying that the 2014 version of the event will have a strong emphasis on sport. Good idea.

Monitoring Investment Pays Off /// By Jeppe Schäfer E A/S (formerly known as Syd Energi A/S) is Denmark’s third largest energy and utility company, cooperatively owned bits customers and with an impressive commitment to environmentally responsible operations. But it’s also a provider of entertainment and telephony via a major partnership role in Denmark’s WAOO! project. WAOO! is a collaboration between thirteen independent fibre optic networks designed to facilitate high quality IPTV and VOD services to subscribers. It negotiates distribution rights,

In addition to its IPTV and VOD services, SE operates cable services from nine headends, delivering 66 DVB-C channels, 43 analogue channels, and 36 FM channels. Cable monitoring capability is provided by SE’s monitoring installations at 28 sites, where a combination of VB120, VB220, and VB262 units are used. Combined with portable VB12-RF units for in-field diagnosis, these units provide rapid and exact isolation of problems that may arise due to faulty wiring, or unshielded connectors in older installations at customer premises.

To achieve this, SE uses a combination of Bridge Technologies VB120, VB220, and VB330 probes throughout the chain to provide instant diagnosis and analysis of any errors in the stream.

The installed base of WAOO! users has grown rapidly. In order to gain better operating economies that can be passed on to the subscriber, SE recently purchased Stofa, the country’s second-largest TV distribution network, adding a 400 percent increase in customer numbers.

Stofa also uses Bridge Technologies monitoring equipment but reaches its subscribers mainly via cable, while SE’s customers are mainly served through IPover-fibre. This means there’s a complementary base of expertise between the two companies: because we both use Bridge systems, there’s good potential for sharing knowledge and new ways to use the technology.

While SE is mainly focused on IP/fibre, we are nevertheless rolling out cable infrastructure at a rapid rate. It’s a steep learning curve with technology we are not so familiar with, unlike the fibre and IP world where we are much more comfortable.

Cable technology is stable and mature, but when you are rolling out massive amounts of hardware, hardware faults do occur in the headend.

The Bridge systems allow us to pinpoint faults quickly. This is vital for our growth: if you have a hardware fault in the network and it takes you five days to find it, the customer will suffer for that period.

Tolerances are important, and a small variation can cause an error. You might have an output of a certain db level into the fibre and when it falls 0.5 of a db the customer may experience ghosting, pixelation, or a snowy picture. If we can’t measure these tolerances ourselves and get timely warnings, then the only way of detecting errors is to wait for customers to call and complain – and we don’t want that.

This means we put less stress on the customer service, we have fewer dissatisfied customers and fewer truck rolls. The benefit in the long term is very positive growth for our |business. ///

Investing in monitoring infrastructure is a finely calculated thing. You must weigh costs and benefits. When we create a comprehensive monitoring system it enables us to detect faults very quickly.

First of all, since January I began to work and film (B-cam) for a great and inspiring female film director, Phie Ambo, on her next documentary about an influential Danish Biodynamic farmer, who aims to restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony in every area of his work and life.

Additionally, from time to time I get to work on commercials /shorts as a camera assistant. I also often edit online videos for/ and hang out in the office of the funniest comedians in Denmark: Wulffmorgenthaler. In my spare time, I'm constantly looking for new projects and shooting a variety of videos.

WHICH DO YOU PREFER? At the moment, documentaries, which involve just a few people, since on those I am mostly working as a cinematographer.

There is nothing more precious than experiencing someone's life, and trying to see the world through their eyes for the time of filming the movie.

Nevertheless, I also love the film set lifestyle, and working on international feature productions.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SHOOTING JOB? In the very beginning, I started to make movies about something that I was passionate about. In my case: extreme

sports! When I was 17, I got a film job on a Swiss glacier. I was filming short extreme sports videos, for a ski and snowboard camp for teens.

MOST RECENT, INTERESTING ASSIGNMENTS? Most of them are special and interesting, e.g. cooperating with 16 filmmakers to create one music video for a Norwegian band, filming carnivals and events in my city, or filming a chapter for a Danish Documentary called “Farmer and The Universe.” I am trying to capture the ideology of the whole universe in the micro elements, fauna and flora, people, on an ecological farm in

Filming the macro world puts you in another state of mind. (I have huge respect for camera operators working for National Geographic Channels). The task requires absolute control over

your thoughts, words, and deeds and hours of waiting, but is a very meditative and openminding challenge for a cinematographer, especially when it comes to pulling focus on macro lenses!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLY FILM WORK, AT THE AGE OF 13!

A very long, long time ago -- OK, actually a decade ago -- I discovered the world of cameras and cartoons. I was moving to a new city almost every year as a child/teen, but I was lucky enough to always get a simple digital photo camera and very basic editing programs around me, so I started to create stopmotion videos. I was writing short stories or creating parodies of popular fairy-tails, but you know, these vids were really amateurish! I was just playing around with a camera in my room.

My very first actors were Lego bricks and toys, which I was sculpturing in modelling clay!

Nevertheless, my interests and fascination in film and cameras started to grow and, when I was about 15, I firmly decided that I would dedicate my life to film production and story-telling.

CURRENT EQUIPMENT YOU USE? Sony NEX FS700, Canon C300, Canon DSLRs, and when I work as

an AC, I am mostly surrounded by Arri Alexa or RED Epic.

OTHER GEAR YOU HAVE ACCESS TO? Sony PMW-F3, Sony FS100, and various Canon DSLRs. HOW DO YOU FIND DSLRS? WHAT ARE THEIR GOOD POINTS? BAD POINTS? We all know the disadvantages of DSLRs, and we shouldn't compare them to professional film cameras, but I have to add that I am a huge fan of Canon DSLRs. They have saved me money and ‘my life’ many times.

DSLR is a great tool to develop your camera-skills, and learn working with focal length and light. Moreover, they are very useful while shooting sport videos, events, reportages especially in extreme conditions or small spaces, or while you are on the road.

Moreover, I would never replace a DSLR with these handy semi-professional tv-camrecorders with noninterchangeable lenses. I love working with focus/sharpness

For instance, I was once working on an extreme snowboard movie in Norway and it was a fun task, but I was almost ‘slaughtered’ by a snowboarder, riding with meteoric speed in my direction.

Only my nose was cut into two pieces by a sharp board. Ah! Happily it functions well again and the scar is almost not visible anymore! What wouldn’t cinematographers do to get the best shots!

HOW MUCH 16:9 DO YOU SHOOT? At the moment, I shoot most of my footage in 16:9.

and getting the effect of perspective/many layers, which I can create with low light Canon lenses!

Now that a lot of gear, like cameras, lighting and grip equipment, is getting smaller is traveling getting easier?

Actually, I still have not found my "dream camera", which would include all the tech specifications that I need, packed in a small handy box. But true, I think traveling with video gear is getting much easier and smoother. Year by year, we see new and more handy tools/bags/covers.

I consider myself a physically strong person (for a woman), but sometimes when I'm traveling on my own to film some reportages, I wish I had four hands!

I definitely would love to play more with RED Epic Cameras.

WHAT PIECE OF GEAR DO YOU WISH SOMEONE MIGHT MAKE? I am still looking for a handy and light professional film/video

WHAT COUNTRY WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SHOOT IN? I have to say that if I keep working with passionate, spirited and dedicated people on inspirational film projects, then the location doesn’t actually matter. Anyways, some New York or London atmosphere, as well as a little bit of Singapore sun, wouldn’t do me too bad on a set!

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Getting to know and meeting amazing people, artists, directors, filmmakers and doing what I really love to do!

Moreover, seeing someone touched and inspired by your movie, is a priceless feeling!

WORST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? As we know, every coin has two sides. It is easy to complain, anyways - if there were something truly bad or disgusting, I would change my occupation!

DULLEST ASSIGNMENTS AND WHY? Spending hours on converting video footage.

On the other hand, I have to mention that working on projects which I do not “feel”, nor understand, or that promote violence on the screen, are just stupid, dull, destructive -- a waste of time and I’m avoiding these!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR HAIRIEST/SCARIEST ASSIGNMENT? Scariest? I would rather call those ‘hard’ experiences; challenging/testing my brain cells and adrenal glands. I still

WHAT’S YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC? It varies a lot, from Indie Rock, alternative music to James Brown and Otis Redding; from old good rock AC/DC, Iggy Pop to Rn’B; and there is nothing more precious than listening to soundtracks from my favourite movies. They always get me into the ‘filming mood’!
